In this deeply honest episode, I talk with Syed Abbas—global meditation teacher, disability advocate, and father—about how a life-altering diagnosis of muscular dystrophy pushed him into the world of breathwork, mindfulness, and inner transformation. We talk about: His journey from depression and chronic medication use to mental clarity and peace What it's like to live with a progressive disability—and find pride and power in it The science and simplicity of breathwork Why caregivers, especially parents of children with disabilities, are stuck in constant fight-or-flight—and what they can actually do about it How just a few deep breaths can shift your nervous system, your energy, and your life
Are your eating habits driven by stress and restriction—or guided by safety, self-love, and true nourishment? In this episode, Sherry talks about how our nervous system affects the way we eat and take care of ourselves. She explains the shift from Protection Mode (where we feel stressed or unsafe) to Safety Mode (where we feel calm and in control), and why that shift is so important for healthy habits.Instead of using food and exercise as a form of punishment, Sherry encourages us to choose a mindset of kindness and self-love. This helps us build a better, more natural relationship with food and fitness. She also shares how diet culture and past experiences can confuse our eating patterns, and why changing the way we think—from “I can't eat that” to “I don't need that”—can lead to long-term health and freedom around food.Topic Covered:Journey to Intuitive Eating and FitnessThe Impact of Diet Trends on Mental Health and Eating HabitsUnderstanding the Autonomic Nervous System's Role in EmotionsUnderstanding Weight Fluctuations and the Impact of Diet CultureEmbracing Intuitive Eating and Self-Compassion for HealthAddressing Emotional Eating Before Starting Intuitive EatingHealing Your Relationship With Food Through Intuitive EatingRedefining Fitness Goals for Aging and Personal EmpowermentShifting From Can't to Don't for Identity TransformationEmbracing Fitness and Consistency Over Intensity for SuccessIf you've ever felt like food has power over you, I hope this conversation brings you comfort and inspiration. You're not alone, and healing is possible. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right—eating well, exercising, pushing yourself—but your body just won't let go of fat, there's a reason.Your nervous system is either in Protection Mode (fight-or-flight) or Safety Mode (rest-and-digest)—and fat release only happens in Safety Mode. But if your body feels unsafe? It clings to fat, slows metabolism, and even triggers binge eating and self-sabotage.Think about it. You go through stress, and suddenly you're reaching for food you swore you wouldn't touch. You're not weak—it's biology. When your body is in survival mode, it's wired to conserve energy and seek quick fuel. That's why unwanted eating behaviors feel so out of control sometimes. But here's the kicker: fat loss isn't just about burning calories—it's about making your body feel safe enough to let go.So the real question is—are you pushing your body into Protection Mode without even realizing it? Because if you are, no amount of dieting or exercise is going to override survival mode. It's time to stop fighting your body and start working with it.So if you're ready to Break Free from Emotional and Binge Eating, download my FREE eBook: Calm the Craving: 7 Steps to Break the Emotional and Binge Eating Battle. In this guide, you'll learn how to regulate your nervous system to eliminate cravings, make peace with food, and allow the weight to naturally release itself.Download your free copy here: www.sherryshaban.com/calmYou deserve to experience food freedom, I can't wait to see you inside!Listen to more episodes at www.makepeacewithfood.com/podcast or subscribe to me on Spotify, iTunes, and YouTube so you never miss an episode!Join my Facebook Community here: www.myfoodfreedomlifestyle.comWork with me: www.sherryshaban.com/transformWant to go deeper? This week, Dr. Prather talks about the importance of the Autonomic Nervous System to our health and how to achieve a proper balance between the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Nervous Systems. In this episode, you'll learn:—How Dr. Prather only finds about 10-15% of patients have a properly-balanced Autonomic Nervous System. And how "basically 100% of patients" were imbalanced during COVID, a trend which has continued. —Why the proper balance is 80% of our time should be in the Parasympathetic (Rest and Digest) mode and 20% of the time in the Sympathetic (Fight or Flight) mode. —The "freeze" mechanism that Dr. Prather has seen in patients where they get so stressed that they can't even function. —Why Dr. Prather says an imbalance in the Autonomic Nervous System can kick off "all" health issues, symptoms, and diseases. And the Autonomic Nervous System test at Holistic Integration that measures the function of the Vagus Nerve and the balance of the spinal cord between the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic systems. —The test Dr. Prather does on the Levator Scapulae to determine a patient's stress levels. —The deep-breathing and eye exercises which help regulate the Vagus Nerve. And the benefits of humming, gargling, cold showers, and exercise for your Vagus Nerve. —The Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic Adjustment that is a specialty at Holistic Integration which Dr. Prather says is "the most important thing you can do for your health" and is the most important treatment to balance out the Autonomic Nervous System.—How Acupuncture can "immediately" decrease the Cortisol stress hormone and increase the "feel good" Oxytocin hormone.—The symptoms of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). And why Dr. Prather says the Atlas "is the biggest thing we can do to improve that" and that "you are never going to be able to fix POTS without the Atlas being set into its proper position".—Plus, we're joined by Angie Nuttle of the VIP Center for Businesswomen to talk about their upcoming "VIP Week" where our own Lisa Prather will be speaking. FREE! CRNA School Interview Prep Guide: https://www.cspaedu.com/uc9a5ih4 Have you ever wondered why your patient becomes tachycardic during intubation—or hypotensive when the surgeon hasn't even made an incision yet? These aren't just random fluctuations. They're signals from the autonomic nervous system—and as a future CRNA, being able to interpret them can mean the difference between chasing vital signs and anticipating them. If you're serious about anesthesia, understanding the autonomic nervous system (ANS) isn't optional—it's essential. The ANS influences everything from anesthetic depth to hemodynamic management, and mastering its functions gives you a clinical edge both in school and in the OR. Here's what you'll learn: The difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems Why understanding ANS function is crucial for interpreting anesthetic depth and hemodynamic trends How neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, and acetylcholine influence receptor activity The physiology of alpha, beta, and muscarinic receptors and how they guide pharmacologic decisions Real-world clinical examples that connect ANS theory to intraoperative decision-making Why the adrenal medulla plays a key role in the body's fight-or-flight response How this knowledge directly applies to your future practice and board exams In this special episode, Dr. Sass Elisha—a nationally recognized anesthesia educator and co-founder of The Nurse Anesthesia—walks you through the complex world of the ANS in a way that's practical, clear, and rooted in real-life anesthesia scenarios. By the end of this episode, you'll not only understand the “yin and yang” of autonomic balance—you'll be able to predict and respond to patient responses like a seasoned provider. This is foundational knowledge that will serve you from the classroom to the OR. As Dr. Elisha would say, "It's go time!" Want Guaranteed CRNA School Admission? Does your health plan stress you out more than it helps you? If navigating wellness feels overwhelming, you're not alone. Luckily, wellness doesn't have to be complicated. In this episode, Jenn shows us how. On this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck is here to help you uncomplicate your health journey. From focusing on what works for your body to tuning out the endless noise of health content online, Jenn breaks down the essentials—clean eating, movement, sleep, stress management, including the power of social connection, and the role of supplements. Learn why consistency matters more than perfection, how to listen to your body's signals, and why sleep might be the ultimate biohack. It's time to simplify, take control, and make wellness work for you—without the stress! The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (02:44) Don't allow your health plan to stress you; focus on what works for your body and your life(06:19) Limit how many content creators you follow and the truth about protein and fiber(10:31) Clean, lean protein, veggies and fruit, and eating at certain times of the day(15:27) Fasting, the difference between unprocessed and processed foods, and movement(23:40) Listen to your body, stress, sleep and supplements(31:15) Social connection and community are key for longevity(33:08) Sleep is the ultimate biohack for a healthy body(37:02) The quality of a supplement mattersKEY TAKEAWAYS:If your health plan feels overwhelming, it might do more harm than good. Simplify your wellness by focusing on what works for you and limiting the experts you follow to avoid confusion and decision fatigue. Our bodies are wired to respond to stress as a survival mechanism, but modern-day stressors—like emails and phone notifications—trigger the same physiological response as life-threatening situations. This prolonged fight-or-flight state shuts down essential functions like digestion, immune response, and detoxification, contributing to long-term health issues.Simple actions like deep breathing before meals, movement, quality nutrition, fresh air, and social connection can help regulate stress and improve overall well-being. Prioritizing sleep and establishing consistent routines further support mental and physical health.Supplements can be a powerful tool to add on, but they cannot take the place of other healthy lifestyle choices.QUOTES: (07:48) “No expert knows your body better than you do. Do you suffer from age-related aches and pains that traditional stretching or medications won't relieve? Are you doing all the sports recovery things and still feel pain? It's possible that the cause isn't actually aging, but because your body is in a state of fight-or-flight. Tune into this episode and discover how simple posture adjustments and diaphragmatic breathing can transform your physical performance and well-being.In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck welcomes Dr. Amy Novotny, founder of the PABR® Institute. Together they explore a naturalistic approach to pain relief, stress reduction, and overall wellness. Dr. Novotny shares her groundbreaking work on how altering your breathing mechanics and ribcage positioning can shift the body from a fight-or-flight state to a state of rest and relaxation, helping to reduce muscle tension and improve physical performance. By addressing the autonomic nervous system this approach can relieve digestive issues, and decrease the impact of chronic stress, and this episode offers insightful strategies for relieving pain, improving sleep, and even overcoming trauma-related physiological responses—all without the need for traditional stretching or medications. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (05:27) Amy shares her professional journey(09:47) The three main components of the autonomic nervous system. Amy explains the results of a patient changing their breathing mechanics(15:15) Amy explains muscle contraction and why it's worse with age and gives an example of how to relax the breastbone(26:47) What should you notice about back muscle tension (29:11) Belly breathing versus diaphragmatic breathing and how chewing and swallowing impacts your TMJ jointKEY TAKEAWAYS: Dr. Amy Novotny discovered that altering her ribcage position and breathing mechanics allowed her to shift from a fight-or-flight state (sympathetic) to a state of rest-and-relaxation (parasympathetic), significantly reducing muscle tension and enhancing her physical performance without traditional stretching or rehabilitation techniques.Dr. Novotny's work highlights how chronic stress and muscle tension, especially in the abdominal region, can contribute to digestive issues. People can naturally relieve physical tension, improve digestion, and even overcome trauma-related physiological responses by addressing posture and breathing mechanics.Unlike voluntary muscle contractions (e.g., lifting an object), emotional stress triggers involuntary muscle contractions that can persist unnoticed. Over time, this accumulated tension can lead to chronic pain, which is often mistaken for age-related discomfort.QUOTES: (06:11) “I realized if I changed my breathing mechanics, very different than breath work, but if I changed my mechanics of how I held my rib cage and how that affected my diaphragm, I could run eight miles in 55 minutes, get off the treadmill and not have to stretch.” Dr. Amy Novotny(20:45) “You must physically train your body to get in the correct position again.” Dr. Amy Novotny(28:51) “There are specific techniques that can help us hone that interoception.” Jenn Trepeck(33:52) “Diarrhea, constipation, all those types of things as we know, are also connected to trauma." Jenn Trepeck.(34:45) “I'm a big fan of playing with it. See what happens. 20% of the population is on the hypermobile spectrum and can struggle with chronic pain because of it. At the more extreme end of the spectrum is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a genetic disorder that affects not not muscles and joints but the whole body in ongoing feedback loops. Perhaps most significantly, 80% of people with EDS have generalized anxiety. Most doctors or practitioners seeing people with vague symptoms from chronic pain, allergies, SIBO, IBS, brain fog, POTS, autoimmunity, anxiety, and more are often unaware that EDS can be the cause. Even less know about holistic ways to intervene in the cycle of dysregulation. So I spoke with a specialist in EDS, Dr. Derik Andersen to get some answers. In this episode we discuss:what is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?the mast cell activation and EDS cyclewhat are the symptoms and how can someone test themselves?why are anxiety and nervous system issues associated with it?research on the Autonomic Nervous System and HRVneurodivergence and EDSholistic treatment approachesfocused shockwave therapynutritional interventionsbreathwork for the nervous sustemwhat practitioners should knowBioDerik S. Anderson, DC, CPT, CSN is the Clinic Director of the Muscle and Joint Clinic in Northern California. He helps his patients be healthier by utilizing his education and personal and professional backgrounds. Dr. Anderson grew up wanting to help people and initially planned to go to business school to work in energy conservation. But, after a good friend's life was positively changed by chiropractic care, he had a change of heart. His friend spent two years with horrific intestinal problems and saw over a dozen providers, but no one could help her – until she saw a chiropractor. The hosts discuss the implications of training volume and intensity, emphasizing the importance of structured training and the need for realistic expectations. They also explore strategies for maximizing training effectiveness within limited time constraints, including the significance of periodization and the management of intensity during base training. In this conversation, the speakers delve into the intricacies of training, focusing on the autonomic nervous system's response to stress, the importance of structured training, and the balance between intensity and recovery. They discuss common misconceptions about training, such as the idea of a 'magic workout,' and emphasize the need for simplicity in training plans. The conversation also touches on the challenges of maintaining motivation and finding balance in training amidst life's demands. Takeaways Training volume is crucial for performance improvement. Time-crunched athletes need practical advice tailored to their situation. Six hours per week is often considered the minimum for effective training. Intensity management is key for endurance training. Cumulative fatigue can impact long-term performance. Periodization helps in adapting training stimuli over time. Training less than six hours can lead to maintenance mode. Realistic expectations are important for time-crunched athletes. Mixing intensity in base training can stress the nervous system. Specificity in training plans is essential for achieving goals. The autonomic nervous system reacts to training stress like an on-off switch. Structured training and increased volume can lead to better performance. It's important to avoid pushing to the edge of fatigue all year long. There is no magic workout that guarantees quick results. Simplicity in training plans can enhance consistency and effectiveness. Finding balance in training and life is crucial for long-term success. Any structured training is better than none, even if it's short-term. Training should be enjoyable to maintain motivation. Motivation can wane if training becomes a chore. Breaking workouts into smaller, manageable parts can help maintain motivation. Montel's story is not just about the physical and emotional struggles but also about the resilience and determination required to navigate life with MS. He also passionately advocates for cannabis as a treatment for neuropathic pain, making a compelling case that might just leave you reefer-ing to it in a new light. What's the takeaway from this brainy banter?
