Alongside fellow runners Drew Flowers and Mike Coutu, the trio takes us deep into the Georgia mountains and even deeper into the pain cave, reliving the highs, lows, and everything in between. With 105 punishing miles and over 33,000 feet of climbing, this race tested not only their legs but their sanity. Stephanie finished in an impressive 41 hours and 25 minutes, and Drew and Mike crossed the line together at 44:18—and yes, she lets them know who finished first. From forgotten trekking poles to mid-race trail therapy sessions, the stories fly fast in this post-race debrief. Stephanie talks about running on stair machines and spite, Drew recounts pulling a hamstring in a kids' street race, and Mike details what it's like to deal with Crohn's while trying not to DNF. We get the scoop on hallucinations, aid station carnage, trail naps, revenge runs, mystery runners named “Hugh Jace,” and a certain bear that ate a car door. In this deeply heartfelt and eye-opening episode of HappyCast, hosts Stephanie, Dylan and Andrew are joined by trail race director and community powerhouse Libby Jones, the force behind The Active Joe and the beloved Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run. From her accidental start in race directing to founding one of North Texas's most inclusive and community-focused race organizations, Libby shares how a love for running, a knack for logistics, and a fierce sense of purpose shaped her journey. She recounts the wild origin story of Dino Valley (spoiler: snakes, floods, and disputed land all make appearances), and reflects on how much heart and hustle it takes to bring a race to life.Libby dives into the values that guide her work—radical inclusion, adaptive support, and putting community over profit. From Spanish-language runner manuals and pacer support for older athletes to creating safe spaces for LGBTQ and nonbinary runners, her approach is as intentional as it is inspiring. The episode doesn't shy away from the hard stuff either: the group discusses uncomfortable truths about safety in the trail running world, the importance of speaking up, and how gossiping, in the right context, can indeed save lives.Whether you're here for the behind-the-scenes race director stories, the raw talk on aging, equity, and community in trail running, or just want to hear about bacon-wrapped Oreos at aid stations, this one is packed with laughs, lessons, and heart. From Western States to bean salsa to “gossip with purpose,” this episode is a love letter to the dirt, the runners, and the volunteers who make it all happen.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. In this unforgettable episode of the HappyCast, hosts Andrew, Dylan, and Stephanie welcome Canadian ultrarunner and mental health advocate Evan Birch, along with his trail-blazing running partner: his seven-year-old Vizsla, Nova. Together, Evan and Nova recently attempted the Orcas Island 100, marking what may be one of the first sanctioned 100-mile ultramarathon efforts by a human-canine team. Their story—captured in the upcoming documentary Supernova: The 100-Mile Dog—goes far beyond finish lines.Evan takes us through the years of preparation that led to this moment, from choosing Nova as a pup specifically for the trails, to learning how to communicate without words, to tailoring training and gear for the unique demands of ultrarunning with a dog. The conversation dives into the bond they've built over hundreds of miles and the sheer trust it takes to tackle such a challenge together.Beyond the race, this episode is a powerful reflection on mental health, identity, and resilience. Evan opens up about his background in emergency services, his own struggles, and how trail running—and Nova—became a path toward healing. Raw, thoughtful, and deeply inspiring, this episode is a reminder that sometimes, the journey isn't just about covering ground—it's about who we become along the way.ultrabirch.comBe sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. We're back! After a few weeks off, the crew returns, and they take on the Monster in the process. This is the first part of three episodes dedicated to the Arizona Monster 300. The first two parts are a very detailed course overview and recap with Andrew, and the third will be an interview with another runner who ran the race MUCH quicker. So we hope we have the back and front of the pack covered with this one! For part one, co-host Andrew talks all things Arizona Monster 300 - the newest and biggest trail race around. This was the inaugural year of the event, so the stoke level for all involved was high. This is a 300 mile trail race that traverses the Sonoran desert in Arizona, heading south from Superior, through Tucson, and down near the border in Patagonia. The course mainly takes place on the rugged and completely exposed Arizona Trail, and goes over the incredibly steep and rugged Catalina mountains, including Mt. Lemmon, before dancing in the shadows of Mt. Wrightson near the finish. In this episode, Andrew provides a very detailed course overview, as well as his own personal experience. This episode covers the first half of the race, from the start in Superior all the way to the incredibly difficult Mt. Lemmon - a section that Andrew says was the most difficult he has done yet in a 200+ mile race. Andrew goes over the logistics, the course difficulty, and yes, some of the issues and concerns that others have been asking about. We hope this episode offers some insight for those interested in doing the race in the future. It is an incredible event and an opportunity that many shouldn't pass up if they're looking for their distance PR. So strap in and enjoy our trek through the desert for the next few episodes as we talk all things Arizona Monster 300!Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. With Andrew deep into the Arizona Monster 300, we're throwing it back to the second half of his first Arizona epic. This is where the race gets real: after pushing through Jerome, Andrew faces crumbling shins, emotional lows, water crossings gone wrong, and the infamous climb up Mount Elden. In this episode, we follow him from Cottonwood to Sedona to Flagstaff, as the trail throws every twist it can: gravel roads, technical descents, delusional audio loops in his head (hello Destiny's Child?), and a contact lens disaster in the middle of the desert. We also meet key players like Rachel, Kenneth, Kirsten, and Regina—each helping (or witnessing) Andrew's slow unraveling as he pushes to the finish.Stephanie kicks things off and Dylan wraps it up, bringing their usual dose of humor and heart. Stay tuned for stories about teacups on mountaintops, awkward trail naps, and the kind of breakdowns only a 250-mile race can trigger. With 85% of the race taking place on the Pinhoti trail, and a shade under 28,000ft of climbing, this is an epic, scenic and “runnable” 200 miler. We talk to Trevor about his experience on the course, his strategies, and shockingly, how it was to run the ENTIRE race with no crew OR drop bags. Yes, he carried EVERYTHING he had on his back, which apparently was only “7-8lbs”.As someone who enjoys running alone, we also hear about Trevor's experience running with three other men who eventually were dubbed “the four amigos”. On this week's episode of the HappyCast, we are joined by returning guest AND recently crowned Bigfoot 200 winner, Jessica Schiller! This was Jessica's first 200 mile race, and she was up against some stiff competition.  This year, Bigfoot 200 had a major reroute last minute after a file broke out near the middle of the course. So instead of the traditional point-to-point 200+ mile course that traverses around the Cascades, folks were challenged with a double out-and-back course that had them do one of the hardest sections of the entire race not once, but four times! We talk to Jessica about the challenges that this reroute provided, and how she was able to mentally stay focused and run her own race. Jessica also preaches the importance of just doing what she set out to do, and not focusing on anything else. She considers herself just a regular, “normal” runner that had a goal in mind and set out to achieve it. A consequence of that goal may have been winning the race, but her main focus was on just being able to run her own race the entire time. From battling the elements, the mental challenges, and having a surprise pacer (Mika Thewes) pace her to a 1st place finish, we hear it all. And since she's a friend of the show, some attempted derailments may or may not have occurred.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. This was the third year of this event, and until now, no one was able to finish. This year, the event covered 280 miles and around 80,000ft of vertical gain. In the past, it has approached closer to 350 miles, with adjustments made due to inclement weather and other obstacles. This is a borderline self-supported event, with self navigation being required. This year, volunteers helped with setting up some aid stations and providing support throughout the race. This is a very difficult, yet gorgeous and rewarding undertaking, and is limited to around 15 runners that are hand-picked by Helgi.Connor details his success and struggles, and the camaraderie that took place in order to get him across the finish line. From a bear encounter, to a frightening thunder, lightening, and hail storm that almost derailed his race, Connor covers every facet of this race. Hear what it took for the Mighty McClelland to finish this epic journey! And remember, in his own words, “WE finished this race”, as the community around the event pulled together to do whatever it took to get him home.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. In the first segment, Dylan and Stephanie do a check-in with returning guest favorite, Regina Massingill, as she describes the comedy of errors that ensued during her Muleshoe 60k night race over the weekend. Her new favorite thing just might be racing in the middle of the night without any hydration and only a flashlight guiding her. Her experience helps shed light on how some of us are able to overcome adversity and still have some fun with it, and that even experienced runners are still prone to epic mistakes. For the second segment, Andrew hops on as the crew all talk about their upcoming goals and some training updates. And, of course, the importance of running with professional grade “poop bags”, since that's apparently a requirement at Badwater 135, a race that Stephanie talks about preparing to crew for. Dylan provides some updates for his return to racing, with Sufferfest just a few weeks away, and Andrew gets candid and honest about his struggles and concerns about recovery and some doubts about his health with Bigfoot 200 just a few weeks away. It's a hodgepodge this week as the HappyCast provides a little bit of everything, from overcoming struggles, to embracing new ones, and all that lies in between. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review.
