Bobby speaks with New York-based saxophonist, composer, arranger, and dynamic bandleader Ed Palermo. The Ed Palermo Big Band is a sensational New York institution that specializes in performing the music of Frank Zappa alongside prog rock and swing classics, as well as Ed's original compositions, all strung together in an outlandish and unpredictable stage show. Ed discusses his transition from saxophonist to composer/bandleader, his approach to improvisation, and whether humor belongs in music.
Frank Zappa may have said "jazz is not dead, it just smells funny" but looking at his life and music one does not get the impression that he really believed that jazz was decomposing or dying a slow death. This week we revel in the beauty of the jazzier side of Zappa's vast repertoire checking out not only some of his recordings but also how the jazz world has embraced his genius. The playlist includes music by Frank Zappa, Colin Towns, The NDR Bigband, Ed Palermo, Mike Mainieri, Joe Lovano, Stefano Bollani, Daniele Sepe, Woody Herman, Le Bocal, Riccardo Fassi, David Kikoski, Zach Brock, Javon Jackson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Zappatistas, Flat Earth Society, Anais Drago, Asphalt Orchestra, Detailed playlist available at: https://spinitron.com/radio/index.php?station=rfb&playlist=8916#here
My guest today is Jeffrey Lee Campbell. Jeff is a guitarist, composer, producer and most recently, a published author! Jeffrey’s honest, engaging book, “Do Stand So Close”, recounts his year as Sting’s guitarist on the “Nothing Like the Sun” world tour. To quote the publisher’s summary: “Do Stand So Close” follows Jeffrey’s amazing odyssey-from relocating to NYC and miraculously landing the high-profile gig, to life on the road with one of the planet’s biggest rock stars, to his humbling crash-and-burn after the tour.” Or as Jeff would summarize his book: “Young knucklehead learns his way through life, making lots of mistakes, while given the opportunity of a lifetime.” Jeffrey reminds me that he first met my husband, Paul on a Nite Sprite gig and then on an Ed Palermo gig, before they shared the Broadway musical pits of Saturday Night Fever, Seussical and then the 14 year run of Mamma Mia! Jeff now plays guitar for Broadway’s School of Rock, grateful for his 19 year and counting run on Broadway. He talks about mystery and meaning in people and places that later reveal as significant milestones in his life. Jeff reflects on his journey of soul searching, and sobriety that coincided with connecting to his his soul mate, the love of his life, Patty Murray. Jeff admits that artists are sensitive people so tooting their own horn, is often incompatible to their personality. So I enthusiastically toot the horn for him: do yourself a favor and read “Do Stand So Close”; its not just a great read for musicians, Jeff authentically writes a universal story of dreams, fame, humility, fears, and healing that everyone can relate to!
Listener suggestions guide the boys this time, with jazz inflected rock and camp infected jazz filling the playlist. Bettye LaVette - INTERPRETATIONS: THE BRITISH ROCK SONGBOOK; Frank Zappa - MAKE A JAZZ NOISE HERE; Joni Mitchell – MINGUS; Ed Palermo Big Band - THE GREAT UNAMERICAN SONGBOOK
Ed Palermo's Big Band performed a show featuring Todd Rundgren music this year at the Iridium in NYC. It's not the first time the band has performed Todd's music, they have also performed a mashup of Todd and Zappa billed as Zodd Zundgren several times at the Iridium. Ed is not a “business as usual” musician. After all, when most people think of “big bands” they think of Duke and Dorsey. But go to see Ed Palermo’s Big Band and you might hear Zappa, Rundgren, Hendrix, the blues of Paul Butterfield & Mike Bloomfield or one of Ed’s own compositions, loaded with lush turns and unexpected twists. Before forming his own band, Ed toured and recorded with many different artists including Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, Debbie Gibson, The Spinners and countless others. He has written and arranged for the Tonight Show, Maurice Hines and Eddy Fischer. He also arranged the music for a recent James Brown concert at the Hollywood Bowl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAYvoMNrOac
