Back in the 70s I was a huge prog rock fan and an offshoot of that fandom was discovering jazz fusion. I think Jean-Luc Ponty was the first proper fusion record I ever owned. I believe I was a fusion fan before getting into jazz in general. I've been planning on creating a fusion mix for months but just haven't gotten around to it. Then last month I was sipping coffee on a cold morning, listening to a fusion playlist, when a couple of laid back tunes came up. I immediately started a new playlist for quiet fusion tracks. And this mix is the result. It's got some of my all time favorite jazz fusion artists - Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock & Miles Davis. But surprisingly, not my fav fusion artist - Bill Bruford. He just didn't have anything quiet enough that worked with the mix. But at least his guitarist, Alan Holdsworth made the cut. I hope you enjoy listening to this little diversion as much as I did creating it. Cheers!
Text us about this show.John Calarco is simply an outstanding musician. Never mind that he could be considered a drummer's drummer, he is at heart a musician. For proof, listen to recordings he's played on by Daryl Stuermer (Phil Collins, Genesis, Jean Luc Ponty), Willy Porter, Greg Koch, the Kirk Tratnall Trio, and more. Not enough? He already has one solo album, Shine, to his credit and is about to drop his next one called Drone. These two albums are completely his original work and they will floor you. Add to that experiences playing with Andy Summers (The Police), Kate Pierson (The B-52s), Nils Lofgren (Bruce Springsteen), and a host of other notable artists and you realize there's something very special about "Johnny Cee." Send us a textIn today's episode, we look at how social media gives us a grab-bag of people's memories of stars and some who weren't quite so successful, or scarcely successful at all. Nonetheless, they are remembered by some and lionised on social media. The other side of "on-line" is the channels that present video imagery of any and everything, such as YouTube, TikTok and so on. Jeff presents a bunch of interesting links for you to investigate. In “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, we lament the passing of such greats as David Sanbourn, John Mayall, as well as a couple of guys who have played beneath the radar for most of their career but still worked with giants like Frank Zappa, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ray Charles, Steve Hackett, and many others. Our “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is John Mayall's “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton” from 1966. The album featured John Mayall, Eric Clapton, John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) and Hughie Flint (Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band) and marks the start of Clapton's legend as a British guitar god. Chris DiGirolamo could be called “The Accidental Publicist.” A lifelong drummer from age 5, Chris was hooked. His mother took him to Jazz from a young age, but he truly fell in love with the genre at 14, when a friend's uncle introduced him to Jean Luc Ponty's “Rhythms of Hope.” Chris attended Berklee College of Music and New York Institute of Technology. From there, he went on to work as assistant engineer at the legendary Systems Two Recording Studio, followed by a turn in Sausalito, California at Record Plant Studios (“The Plant”). Moving back to the East Coast and looking for something new, Chris became a freelance writer for several small music publications. But post 9/11, work in that field was nearly nonexistent. However, one unexpected phone call from a guy who said “Are you Chris? You were recommended to me as a publicist,” changed his life. And that's where the story of Two For The Show Media begins.

In this wide-ranging conversation, Jean Luc talks about his transition from a young classical violinist fresh out of the Conservatoire to one of the leading jazz instrumentalists in Europe, to his impact on American rock and jazz fusion. We talk about who influenced his playing, what gear he uses, and about being in Frank Zappa's band.
