We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Lucinda Williams. ABOUT LUCINDA WILLIAMSOne of the most revered songwriters on the face of the earth, Lucinda Williams was once crowned “America's Best Songwriter” by People magazine. She first gained widespread attention after Mary Chapin Carpenter made her song “Passionate Kisses” a Top 5 hit, which earned Lucinda a Grammy award for Country Song of the Year. She went on to release a string of critically-acclaimed albums that garnered her a total of 15 Grammy nominations spanning the genres of rock, pop, country, folk, and Americana. One of the primary architects of the Americana genre, Lucinda has received more Americana Music Association award nominations than nearly any other artist, and she was the first female recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll, while Rolling Stone named her among its 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. In addition to her own success as an artist with songs such as “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad,” “Right in Time,” “Essence,” “Righteously,” “Are You Alright,” “Come On,” and “Real Love,” the daughter of famed poet Miller Williams has also had her songs recorded by Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless, Bettye LaVette, and many others.

What are some of the photos, logos, and icons that come to YOUR mind? The first-ever collection of Addicted To Noise founder and former Rolling Stone senior writer Michael Goldberg's photographs, Jukebox: Photographs 1967-2023 (Hozac Books), features an impressive array of underground figures and outcast luminaries captured in their natural habitat, most seen here for the first time anywhere. Bridging the gaps between the late ‘60s psychedelic era, primitive first-wave ‘70s punk and soul & reggae, as well as never-before seen images of country & folk iconoclasts and rule-breakers across the spectrum of all that is captivating, and even including some modern artists still making waves, Jukebox is a riveting photography collection that truly feels as good as it looks. The photos in JUKEBOX are drawn from the thousands he's taken over the years. Included are photos of the Sex Pistols, Crime, the Ramones, the Avengers, Devo, the Nuns, the Clash, Tom Verlaine, Lou Reed, John Cale and the Dils as well as Tom Waits, Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile, Janis Joplin, Ben Gibbard, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Muddy Waters, Toots and the Maytals, Patti Smith, Bettye LaVette, the Who, Neil Young, Jonathan Richman, Townes Van Zandt, the Flamin' Groovies, and many many more. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2024 30:47

By the end of 1970 Three Dog Night was in the middle of their most prolific and successful period of their career.  The group would land 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975 with three of these taking the top slot.  The group was formed by three vocalists in 1967 - Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton.  The other members of the band for this album are Mike Allsup on guitar, Joe Schermie on bass, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, and Floyd Sneed on drums.  All of the instrumentalists in the band also provide backing vocals on at least one of the songs from the album.Naturally is the fifth album from the band and the second released in 1970.  Three singles from the album entered the Billboard top 20, with "Joy to the World" topping the charts.  As with contemporaries like the Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, you get an abundance of vocal harmonies with Three Dog Night.  Given the origins with three vocalists, perhaps this is not surprising.Three Dog Night takes its name from the Australian Outback, and how the Aborigines would keep warm at night by sleeping with a dingo - dogs native to the continent.  A very cold evening would be known as a three-dog night.  While the group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000, they have not yet been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Much of their work was composed by others, and this has been used as an excuse for their lack of recognition.Three Dog Night continues to produce music today, though Danny Hutton is the only original member still with the group.  Wayne takes us through this album for today's podcast. One Man BandThe first single released from the album went to number 19 on the Billboard charts.  The lyrics describe a man who wants to be the only one for his lover - her one man band.  There are great close harmonies and work on the Hammond organ in this one.Joy to the WorldThe big hit from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard charts and remained there for six weeks.  It was not expected to be a hit, but was instead expected to just be a "filler" song for the album with nonsensical but catchy lyrics.  Singer-songwriter, guitarist, and actor Hoyt Axton wrote the song.  Chuck Negron is the lead singer on this hit.LiarRuss Ballard of Argent wrote this song, and released it as Argent's first single off their self-titled album.  While that version did not chart, the Three Dog Night rendition went to number 7 on the Billboard charts, benefitting from its release after their number 1 hit with "Joy to the World."  The haunting lyrics describe a relationship in trouble.I Can Hear You CallingThis song leads off the album and appears as the B-side to "Joy to the World," but was never released as a single itself.  The funky grooves feature heavy use of the Hammond organ and a big drum beat.  The lyrics reflect a person who keeps getting called on the phone by a lover he has left behind.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “H.R. Pufnstuf”This odd children's show from Sid and Marty Krofft left the airwaves in October 1970.  STAFF PICKS:Fire and Rain by James TaylorRob starts off the staff picks with this soft rock hit.  Taylor wrote the song after the suicide of a friend.  It was the second single from Taylor's second album, "Sweet Baby James."   It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.It Don't Matter to Me by BreadBruce brings us another soft hit.  Bread was a soft rock group formed and fronted by David Gates, along with Jimmy Griffin and Rob Royer.  Gates, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, ran in the same circles as Leon Russell in Tulsa bar bands before moving to California.  The song reflects an openness in the singer's relationship, wanting only the best for his love.Knock Three Times by Dawn Lynch features a group which would later be known as Tony Orlando and Dawn.  Orlando was working as an executive at April-Blackwood Music, and released the song without listing his name to protect his position from accusations of a conflict of interest.  The song went to number 1.  The lyrics reflect a secret romance between a man and his neighbor from the floor below.Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go by Bettye LaVetteWayne's staff pick is a bit of a James Brown song with a female voice.  Bettye LaVette came out of Detroit but was signed by Atlantic Records rather than their competitors in Detroit, Motown Records.  LaVette is a long time singer of blues, soul, and R&B starting in the early 60's and continuing today.  This song is about letting loose and having a good time living in the moment. COMEDY TRACK:Bridget the Midget by Ray StevensWe wrap up the podcast with the comedy stylings of Ray Stevens singing about Bridget the Midget, the Queen of the Blues. In this episode we welcome Lloyd Bradley into our Hammersmith lair and ask him about his career as a journalist and as the acclaimed author of Bass Culture and Sounds Like London — the latter book celebrating its 10th birthday at the time of recording. We learn what London sounded like to Lloyd as a boy growing up in '60s Hornsey, and how his love for music led to writing for Blues & Soul and then NME and Q. He talks us through some of the key themes of Sounds Like London — his history of "100 years of Black music in the capital" — and particularly the homegrown reggae sub-genre known as "lover's rock" and the rise of grime as a hybrid of UK garage, hip hop, jungle and dancehall. Discussion of lover's rock leads us to clips from a 1998 audio interview with Steve Barrow, founder of dub/roots-reggae reissue label Blood and Fire — and then to how Lloyd came to write 2000's mighty Bass Culture: When Reggae was King. After a short discussion of soul legend Bettye LaVette — and her journey from early '60s Atlantic Records to the Anti- label in the mid-noughties — we pay tribute to the late Tina Turner and her epic story of survival and self-reinvention Mark quotes from highlights of his additions to the RBP library, including Richard Harrington's Washington Post review of the last gig Lowell George ever played and Tony Scherman's exhaustive Musician interview with session drummer Earl Palmer. Finally, Jasper talks us out with his remarks on pieces about Labrinth and London's hyper-eclectic jazz scene. Many thanks to special guest Lloyd Bradley. For more on Bass Culture and Sounds Like London, visit his website at lloydbradley.net. Pieces discussed: George Clinton, Beggar & Co, The Growth of Grime, Blood & Fire's Steve Barrow audio, Bettye Lavette, Bettye Lavette vs. Susan Boyle, Thankful N' Thoughtful, Ike & Tina, Tina Turner, Soulful Queen of Rock'n'roll, Tina Turner roars into Rock Hall, Lowell George, Earl Palmer, Labrinth live and London jazz.

Trauma Stories We Don't Share with Grammy Nominated Mary Gauthier Welcome to Episode #15 with special guest Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Mary Gauthier. Today we are talking about stories that we don't feel like we can share. You know the ones, the stories that we call bad, dark, or embarrassing and maybe even just too sad to share. A lot of times there is trauma associated with what happened in this story which becomes wrapped around a shadow of shame that it happened to us in the first place. One thing I know for sure, is that we are close to a breakthrough when a client says this about their story. Why? Often the story we have the most shame around, is the very story that can set us free. Tune in to find out more as Mary share's her own stories behind the songs, and how songs offer a lifeboat to get to the other side of our traumatic stories. You won't want to miss this one! Maybe music really can save your soul! Mary Gauthier's Bio: Photo Credit: Alexa Kinigopoulos “With songwriting as powerful as her, there's no need to go looking for qualifiers.  She's a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there's never a surplus of those.” Randy Lew, Los Angeles Times. Her eleventh the first record in over 8 years consisting of all her own songs, Dark Enough to See the Stars, follows the profound antidote to trauma, Rifles & Rosary Beads, her 2018 collaborative work with wounded Iraq war veterans. It garnered a Grammy nomination for best Folk Album, as well as a nomination for Album of the Year by the Americana Music Association. Publication of her first book, the illuminating Saved by a Song: the Art and Healing Power of Songwriting, in 2021, brought her more praise.  Brandi Carlile has said, “Mary's songwriting speaks to the tender aspects of our humanness. We need her voice in times like these more than we ever have.”  The Associated Press called Gauthier “one of the best songwriters of her generation.” Mary's songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffet, Dolly Pardon, boy George, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Bettye Lavette, Mike Farris, Kathy Mattea, Bobby Bare, Amy Helm and Candi Staton and have appeared extensively in Film and Television, most recently on HBO TV's Yellowstone. Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

In the 61st year of her singing career, five-time Grammy nominee Bettye LaVette warns us that our chat will be “straight, no chaser”. And she lives up to that promise. Bettye describes her surprise backstage meeting with Bob Dylan: “He kissed me on the mouth. It was no big deal. I've kissed Otis Redding and David Ruffin”. Working with Keith Richards on her Things Have Changed album of Dylan songs was more fun: “We were instant friends” (other friends/fans include Jon Bon Jovi, Pete Townshend and Margo Price). She recalls the Kennedy Center Honors where she stopped the show in front of Streisand, Aretha and Beyoncé, the Jazz Café gig where she threw out an arguing couple (“You can't come starting no fight in the middle of my show!”) and why she loves working with her own band (“I'd rather be bit in the ass by a snaggletoothed mule than go to rehearsal”). The problem with Dylan's Emotionally Yours versus her version? (“He was trying to say I love you. But he couldn't. It was too simple”). Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only Miss Bettye LaVette…Bettye LaVette made her first record in 1962 at the age of sixteen. Her eclectic musical style combines elements of soul, blues, rock and roll, funk, gospel and country music. Despite recording singles and albums, touring in a Broadway musical and being a mainstay of the Northern Soul phenomenon in the UK, she didn't begin to break through until 2003, with the release of her album A Woman Like Me (at the age of 57). Her albums The Scene of the Crime, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, Worthy, the Bob Dylan project Things Have Changed (which Greil Marcus named Best Album of 2018) and Blackbirds were subsequently nominated for Grammy Awards. She has been a guest on countless television programmes including Letterman and Later... with Jools Holland. In 2020, Bettye was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Soul and rhythm and blues singer Jackie Wilson was a legendary artist and performer. Elvis Presley labelled himself ‘the white Jackie Wilson' and Michael Jackson dedicated his 1984 Grammy for Thriller to Jackie in a heartfelt speech. DJ and presenter Scarlett O'Malley has also had a life-long obsession with Jackie Wilson. So when she discovered there was a Jackie Wilson tribute artist called Bobby Brooks she wanted to know more. How do you come to impersonate a legend like Jackie? She meets Bobby in New York and uncovers an extraordinary tale. Bobby has been impersonating Jackie Wilson since the 1990s. He grew up in foster care, a poorly, sick child. He never knew his mum or dad and his name was given to him by the state. As a young adult he joined the Navy and found himself in Hawaii. It was in a Karaoke bar one night, singing, that Bobby was first spotted by music producer Peter Hernandez. He was persuaded to sing with Peter's doo-wop group the Love Notes. Over the next few years people would often comment that he looked just like Jackie Wilson. On the advice of another music producer, Bobby began to sing and perform the odd Jackie number and eventually he was persuaded to try a full impersonation. His career took off. People adored him being Jackie Wilson. It was during a Legends in Concert tour in Atlantic City that Bobby met Motown's The Four Tops, and discovered something extraordinary that would change his life forever. With interviews from soul singers Bettye Lavette and Michael Lizzmore aka Blasé, vocal coach and singer Johnny Valentine, and Blues and Soul founder John Abbey. From Bob Dylan to Dolly Parton, from Pink Floyd to Sinéad O'Connor, Bettye LaVette has covered them all—and each time, she's made the songs she performs uniquely her own. When Margo Price first heard LaVette's rendition of John Prine's Souvenirs, it blew her away. In this episode, Margo sits down with LaVette to discuss her childhood growing up in Detroit, making her first record at 16, and all the devastatingly sad music that LaVette was drawn to listening to as a young adolescent. Plus, LaVette remembers what it was like to perform at the 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama.  Show Notes: You can get a “She Will F*ck You Up” t shirt of your very own at LaVette's website. Before she got her start, LaVette used to hang out at the Graystone Ballroom where she met Sherma Lavett—a local groupie who inspired LaVette (born Betty Jo Haskins) to adopt her stage name, Bettye LaVette. At 16, LaVette made her first record, My Man – He's a Lovin' Man.Watch LaVette perform at the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009.Margo's new album, Strays, will be out January 2023. ODESZA - "The Last Goodbye (feat. Bettye LaVette)," a 2022 single on Foreign Family Collective/Ninja Tune. In Early February, ODESZA returned from a four-year hiatus to drop the cinematic soulful single, “The Last Goodbye.” Featuring reworked vocals from Bettye LaVette's 1965 soul/R&B track “Let Me Down Easy,” the track is a six-minute spine-tingling epic blending the Grammy-nominated duo's electronic grooves with LaVette's heartwrenching vocals to stirring effect. “This song was born out of the concept of trying to bring these lasting, defining musical pieces like the 1965 release of “Let Me Down Easy” by Bettye LaVette into a modern and contemporary electronic setting,” explained Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills of the song. “The idea of bringing two worlds together, that at first seem distant, has always been something we've been drawn to. It was an absolute honor to be able to work with Bettye's voice over the course of writing the track. She's able to convey emotion with her vocal work unlike any other. To date, this has been one of the more fulfilling songs we've had the chance to work on as artists.” The song comes from ODESZA's forthcoming fourth studio album of the same title, which according to a press release, is said to be their most ambitious and personal album to date and includes contributions from a number of notable artists including Låpsley, Ólafur Arnolds, Julianna Barwick, Izzy Bizu, and Charlie Houston. The video for “The Last Goodbye” artfully highlights the power of the instrumentation (including KEXP's Eva Walker on bass!) and features archival footage of LaVette performing “Let Me Down Easy.” Watch it at the link below.
