On this episode of Alabama Politics This Week, Josh Moon and David Person delve into the state of Alabama and national politics, critiquing Governor Ivey's recent address and expressing concern over the influence of unelected billionaires like Elon Musk on government affairs. They discuss the controversy surrounding Beyoncé's country album and the historical context of Black artists in the genre. The hosts also analyze the current administration's foreign policy, particularly regarding the Middle East, and its potential to destabilize international relations. Then, Decatur City Council President Jacob Ladner joins the show to discuss the Stephen Perkins shooting and the subsequent review of the Decatur Police Department. Ladner emphasizes the need for new leadership within the police force, citing communication issues and a lack of visible leadership from the current chief. He also addresses concerns about racial bias, while acknowledging potential socioeconomic disparities in policing, and discusses the mayor's handling of the situation and the upcoming mayoral election. Finally, Josh and David discuss the stalled Alabama medical marijuana program, focusing on legal challenges and legislative attempts to bypass established procedures. They contrast this with the state's approach to gambling, highlighting the benefits of regulation. The conversation ends with a condemnation of racist views expressed by a recent Department of Defense hire, leading to a broader discussion about racial bias, particularly in sports and the NFL's treatment of Black quarterbacks. In this replay, we revisit our chat with Stephen Perkins, the drummer of Janes Addiction, Porno for Pyros, The Halloween Jack, and a few other bands. We talked with Stephen about growing up and learning about drums. We talked about the growth of Janes Addiction, how that spread out into other projects over the years, how these expansions in projects impacted his music, and his drum playing. We talked about his musical influences like David Bowie, The New York Dolls, and punk rock in general. In fact, one of the new releases for The Halloween Jack is a unique rocked-up cover of the New York Dolls song called "Trash." Stephen and the rest of the band wanted to put this song out as a tribute/ token of love to the glam/punk band Sylvain Sylvain, who died after losing his battle with cancer. Stephen also told us about his most recent project at that time, "Perkins Palace", a new record label for up-and-coming talent that needs an opportunity much like Jane's Addiction did when they got signed. https://youtube.com/live/hSlD44tDI2Q JANE'S ADDICTION has canceled the remainder of their U.S. tour following an onstage altercation between singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro at their September 13 concert in Boston. The incident occurred when Farrell bumped into Navarro and appeared to shout at him. Navarro responded by placing a hand between them, after which Farrell seemed to throw a punch. A crew member intervened to break up the situation. On September 16, the band members—Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins—released a statement citing Farrell's mental health as the reason for canceling the tour: "Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have no choice but to discontinue the current U.S. tour." The band expressed regret but emphasized concern for everyone's safety and the inability to ensure a quality performance. Refunds will be available at points of purchase or third-party platforms. Farrell's wife, Etty Lau Farrell, detailed the tension leading up to the Boston incident on Instagram, explaining that Perry had been frustrated by the band's volume, which he felt drowned out his voice. Struggling with tinnitus and throat issues, Farrell became upset when the band began playing “Ocean Size” before he was ready, causing him to scream to be heard. Etty also alleged that Avery put Perry in a headlock and punched him before the altercation was broken up. Despite Farrell being seen drinking wine during performances, Etty clarified that alcohol was not a significant factor, noting the wine was mostly for show. This tour marked Navarro's return after missing previous tours due to long COVID, with Troy Van Leeuwen and Josh Klinghoffer filling in during his absence.

Kris Myers was born on April 5, 1977. Receiving a drum kit at the age of 8, he took an early interest in jazz, rock and punk music. During high school Myers co-started his first musical outfit, a ska/punk band called the Skalawags. The group received a decent amount of success but denied an offer to tour Japan to instead pursue college degrees. Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. Under director Doug Beach, the Elmhurst College Jazz Band played gigs in the U.S. and Internationally at events such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Jakarta Jazz Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. In 2001 Myers enrolled in DePaul University where he earned his master's degree in jazz drumming and was a member of the Rob Parton Orchestra.  In addition to his involvement in school bands, Myers was playing in festivals with a variety of jazz artists such as Nicholas Payton, Diane Schuur, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio as well as local musicians Mark Colby and John McLean.  Myers also was a member of Chicago jazz fusion band Kick the Cat.  Myers began playing drums for progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee in 2003 following the departure of original drummer Mike Mirro. With Myers at the helm, Umphrey's has released ten albums and maintains a rigorous touring schedule of over 100 live shows per year.  Umphrey's has performed at legendary festivals and venues such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Fuji Rock Festival, South by Southwest, Red Rocks, The Ryman Theatre, The Beacon Theatre and more. With Umphrey's, Myers has shared the stage with countless notable musicians such as Buddy Guy, Huey Lewis, Ivan Neville, Les Claypool, Stephen Perkins, Mike Keneally, Joshua Redman, Bela Fleck, Taj Mahal, Victor Wooten, Adrian Belew, Stanley Jordan, Gene Ween, Derek Trucks and Jason Bonham. In 2011 Myers was honored with the title of Best Jam Band Drummer by DRUM Magazine, beating jamband stalwarts such as Butch Trucks (The Allman Brothers) and Jon Fishman (Phish). In 2018, Myers was featured on the cover of Modern Drummer's July issue. Myers placed second in the Experimental Rock category of the publication's “Readers Poll Awards” behind St. Vincent drummer Matt Johnson. When he's not behind the drum kit, Myers enjoys playing golf, attending concerts, hiking and collecting art.    Some Things That Came Up:  -2:30 Kris's multi genre style  -3:00 Rabid fans  -4:45 The Umphrey's McGee audition turned into a 21 year gig and counting -6:30 Kris's previous band was Kick The Cat  -11:00 Maintaining a list of all the venues the band has played  -11:30 Red Rocks is fave venue as well as The Fox Theater in Oakland and The Ryman in Nashville -14:00 Vic Salazar !!! Guests Celsa Allende Stallworth and Makhayla DesRosiers from the Southern Poverty Law Center zoom in to discuss their community organizing work. They advocated for Medicaid expansion in Alabama, highlighting the healthcare challenges faced by rural and low-income residents. 1993 - April: Porno for Pyros “Porno for Pyros”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2024 39:17

If you thought these songs were from Jane's Addiction, it is an understandable mistake.  Porno for Pyros was formed in 1992 after the first break-up of Jane's Addiction by members by lead vocalist Perry Farrell and percussionist Stephen Perkins.  They added Peter DiStefano on guitar and Martyn LeNoble on bass for their eponymously named debut album.  The inspiration for the band's name came from a fireworks advertisement that Perry Farrell saw in a pornographic magazine.  Inspiration was also connected to the 1992 LA riots which occurred in the band's hometown. The album Porno for Pyros benefitted from the success of Jane's Addiction and the buzz surrounding the new group.  Porno for Pyros began a nationwide tour to support the band prior to the release of the first album.  By the time the album was released in 1993 there was a pent-up demand for it, causing it to surge to number 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart.  With a blend of punk, psychedelic rock and alternative, the album gained both commercial and critical success. The band was impactful on the alternative rock scene, but was short-lived.  They would release a follow-up album in 1996 before disbanding in 1998.  They would have reunions in 2009 and 2020, and the original line-up has recorded new material as of 2023 to be released as an EP in 2024.Wayne takes us through this alternative rock album. Cursed FemaleThis track was released as the first single as a medley with the song “Cursed Male.”  The lyrics reflect the abuse women face in life.  It reached number 3 on the Modern Rock charts.  “Cursed to be born beautiful, poor, and female, there's none that suffer more.”Cursed MaleForming a medley with “Cursed Female” for the first single, this song turns to the difficulties males face in life.  “All the guys that really have the money are too old to have a good time with it...Too old to turn the women on, too old to have a fast car and drive it.”PetsThis is the hit from the album.  It deals with dissatisfaction with the human race on the brink of destruction.  The song describes how aliens might take over the world and treat human beings as great pets.  It reached number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.Packin' .25This track has the LA riots as its inspiration.  It reflects the idea of people carrying a handgun in order to achieve respect.  Interestingly, a 25-caliber pistol is not a very powerful weapon.  “I dreamt all yesterday how I might make a man feel with a gun up to his face!  Show respect to me.  I don't care what you're thinking, I'll wipe that thought away! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers (from the motion picture “Benny and Joon”)Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this film about two eccentric people falling in love. STAFF PICKS:Daughter by Pearl JamLynch gets the staff picks rolling with the second single from Pearl Jam's "Vs." album.  It talks about a girl with severe dyslexia whose mother doesn't understand the condition.  The lack of understanding prompts the mother to abuse the daughter, thinking she is being deliberately lazy and disruptive. Woman by Brother CaneRob features a deeper cut from Alabama band Brother Cane off their debut album.  This grunge-tinted song has a slow, haunting, mournful feel that builds into a faster paced, minor epic by the middle of the song before returning to the slow theme at the end.  The singer discusses an unstable relationship.  “I used to know better, now I don't know what's worse - having it all maybe, or having nothing for sure.”Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) by Digable Planets Bruce brings us the first single from the debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space).” The lyrics are a celebration of hip-hop, the Brooklyn underground scene, jazz, style, and the confidence of the group.  Digable Planets sampled “Stretching” by Art Blakley & the Jazz Messengers for the chorus.Lollipop Serenade by Insane JaneWayne's staff pick is from a local Atlanta band with a female lead.  Insane Jane put out two albums, the first called “Each Finger” and the second called “Green Little Pill.” The lead singer was known as “Yellow.”  This may be a song that those outside of Atlanta may not have heard before. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Beer :30 by The Reverend Horton HeatWell, it is largely instrumental, if you don't count the occasional “beer” and “get naked” statements thrown in. Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. This week's guest is Kris Myers - a Nashville-based drummer whose main project is the progressive-rock band Umphrey's McGee, but he's also played with a variety of jazz artists including Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio and many more. With Umphrey's, Kris has shared the stage with Les Claypool, Huey Lewis, Stephen Perkins, Victor Wooten, Bill Evans, Jason Bonham and many more…as always. He truly is an INSANE drummer and I will say he's probably the best guest at breaking down his choices. Even though we've heard a few of his picks before, I learned a lot from his explanations.  AND a Big Fat thanks to Neal Daniels for the recommendation :) Go check out Neal's episode from a few weeks back. OKKKKKK…here are Kris Myers' 5 records that shaped him into the drummer he is today :))) Call / Text Me your picks @ (424) 253-6676 Just state: ⁃            Your name ⁃            Where you're calling from  ⁃            A little backstory of yourself as a drummer (whatever you feel comfortable  with…but do some self promotion, we all want to support you!) Hello everyone! Welcome to the Drum Channel podcast with Billy Amendola.  Today's episode features filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann (the son of The Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann - who, along with Mickey Hart, is half of the Dead's driving rhythm section).  Justin, who grew up on the road, directed the new music documentary Let There Be Drums! released today October 28th, 2022. The film is an examination into the crucial role drumming plays in bands and how music passes down from generation to generation.  Listen in on how Justin put it all together and how after the pandemic, and a bit of luck from the universe, everything fell into place naturally.  Let There Be Drums! features (besides his dad Bill and Mickey Hart), Taylor Hawkins, Ringo Starr, Stewart Copeland, Stephen Perkins, Jason Bonham, Mandy Moon, Chad Smith, and Matt Sorum to name a few. The film consists of incredible performances and recordings, along with rare and/or never-before-seen footage.  Enjoy the show and look for “Let There Be Drums” on your favorite streaming platforms.  Watch the trailer here: https://youtu.be/a-pT2uq02jw
