Baseball is back in Lowell! It was just announced the Lowell Spinners will resume play in 2026 at LeLacheur Park in Lowell. To celebrate that occasion, I talk about that, in addition to my top 10 (or so) moments from my time calling the Spinners on the radio.
Music industry veteran Eddie Gilreath pulls up to the Corner Booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar to trace an extraordinary journey from Philadelphia's sound to global stages. With hosts Patrick Evans and Randy Florence, he recalls faking his first bass gig at 14, serving in Panama during tense Cold War days, then rising through Motown and Warner Bros. to help break artists like the Spinners and George Benson. Eddie shares inside stories about working with icons including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, Curtis Mayfield, and more—plus why some of the most memorable moments happened offstage. He talks about smashing industry barriers as a pioneering Black executive, his “Black Music Is Green” initiative, and how streaming has rewritten the rules for new artists. It's a masterclass in music, marketing, and humanity from a man who quietly shaped the soundtrack of our lives. From basement rehearsals to boardrooms, Eddie's story is funny, candid, and deeply inspiring.Takeaways:How a missing bass player at a Philly cabaret accidentally launched Eddie's music career at 14.Serving in Panama during a volatile Cold War era and keeping music alive even in a combat zone.Moving from musician to executive, rising through Motown and Warner Bros. during the heyday of soul and pop.The strategy behind breaking acts like the Spinners and George Benson, including the massive success of Breezin'.Becoming the first African American national sales director and vice president at Warner, and refusing to be pigeonholed into “just” Black music.Intimate, often funny stories about working with legends: Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Cher, George Clinton, and more.Creating the “Black Music Is Green” initiative and using hard data and retail relationships to open doors for more Black professionals in the business.Reflections on Broadway cast albums, the streaming-era music economy, and why Eddie hopes his legacy is simply that he “did the right things.”#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #EddieGilreath #MotownRecords #WarnerBrothersRecords #MusicIndustryLegends #GeorgeBenson #RayCharles #CurtisMayfield #MichaelJackson #RecordBusinessHistory #BlackMusicIsGreen #PhiladelphiaSound #PanamaVeteran

Sid Vicious - propelled him into the heart of the fledgling UK punk scene.By the end of that year, Mark had started one of the first British punk fanzines, SKUM, and not only been befriended by Bernie Rhodes, The Clash, and members of the Sex Pistols, but by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, who having seen Mark's cartoon of the Sex Pistols v. Bill Grundy TV fiasco, commissioned a ‘Story So Far' from him that became the insert to the Never Mind The Bollocks album. Mark was among the only proper fans, and surely the youngest to attend the Pistols' Silver Jubilee boat trip/concert on June 7, 1977, at which he was arrested and spend the night in jail. By then he was all of 15. He remembers it to this day as the best gig of his life.Mark ceased publishing SKUM in December 1977, a year after he had started, and indulged his Beat Poetry obsession instead, starting a fanzine called All The Poets, printed in early 1979 by Joly MacFie (featured on Episode 3 of this podcast) at Better Badges, as a ‘guinea pig' for his new printing press. Around the same time, he allowed my zine Jamming! to cut-and-paste his (first ever) Sid Vicious interview from SKUM 1 for my Jamming! 7, also printed at Better Badges. At the end of September 2025, Mark and I had a real time conversation for the first time in over 46 years, which I recorded in entirety for this, the final UK episode of the Fanzine Podcast. It is, quite possibly, and not as much for the renewed personal connection as for Mark's incredible origin stories, my favourite episode of them all.Other fanzines mentioned in this podcast: Sniffin' Glue, White Stuff, Bondage, Ripped & Torn, and London's Burning.Find Mark on Instagram. Listen to an interview with Oltanie, a Haitian-American vocalist based in Indianapolis. Her music featured a dynamic fusion of Caribbean and Afro-pop sounds. Also hear a conversation with the Indianapolis keyboardist and bandleader Rodney Stepp, best known for his work with The Spinners. During the late 1970s, Stepp left The Spinners to form Rapture, a legendary Indianapolis funk band. A new compilation of Rapture's music was released earlier this year by Now Again Records.
Listen to the final episode in our two-part series exploring the music of Rapture, a legendary Indianapolis funk band led by keyboardist Rodney Stepp. During the late 1970s, Rapture was a dominating force in the Indianapolis club scene. A new compilation of Rapture's music was recently issued by Now Again Records in California. The album features previously unreleased music Rapture recorded in 1977. Hear interviews with Rapture's Rodney Stepp, Lonnie Williams and Greg Russell. The Indianapolis soul music legend Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds will also share his memories of Rapture. Edmonds' band Manchild was one of Rapture's biggest rivals. Rodney Stepp was born in Indianapolis in 1952. He was raised in the historic Flanner House Homes neighborhood, directly adjacent to Indiana Avenue. Stepp rose to prominence in the Naptown music scene as a teenager, during the 1960s. His high school band the Diplomats performed with major R&B stars and scored a local hit with the song “Hum-Bug”, issued by Lamp Records in 1969. Stepp's follow-up recording “Young Girl” was issued in 1970 under the name Jazzie Cazzie and the Eight Sounds. During the early 1970s, Stepp toured the world as a keyboardist and assistant music director for The Spinners. Stepp eventually grew tired of working as a sideman with The Spinners. Yearning to explore his own musical concepts, he returned to Indianapolis in the late 1970s to form Rapture.
We're sharing an episode from ChinaTalk that dives into one of the biggest recent reversals in U.S. tech policy. The U.S. banned Nvidia's H20 AI chips to China in April. Now, just months later, they're being sold—with a 15% export fee. What happened? Why the reversal? And what does it mean for the future of AI competition between the U.S. and China?Chris Miller—author of Chip War—and Lennart Heim from RAND join ChinaTalk host Jordan Schneider to unpack the policy flip-flop, why China is publicly downplaying interest in the H20, and why high-bandwidth memory and semiconductor manufacturing tools may be even more important than the Nvidia chips themselves.Resources:Listen to more from ChinaTalk: https://link.chtbl.com/chinatalkCheck out the Horizon Fellowship to work in DC on emerging tech policy issues like AI chip export controls: https://horizonpublicservice.org/applications-open-for-2026-horizon-fellowship-cohort/Outro Music: It's a Shame, The Spinners, 1970

Hello and welcome to episode 109 of the Still Spinning Podcast. We did a special pop-up live event on Facebook for this one since we missed our “normal” live night on Monday. Make sure you visit your usual podcast subscription service to add us to your list. Visit our website for more details on becoming a sponsor and buying merch. All of this at stillspinningpodcast.com. Nicole went to the State Fair last week and was able to give a recap of some of the foods she tried and liked, some she did not and the disgusting thing her husband ate (she will add a video to the FB page). Think these Fair Foods sound good? What is YOUR favorite food at the fair? Send us an email! The weather was BONKERs in Wisconsin and Dan has some real life experience dealing with it. He talks about it and then gives some solid advice about police barricades and what you should, and should not, do if you encounter one. And finally, there is a zoo that is asking for “pet food” donations… as in “give us your pets to feed to the big animals here at the zoo.” It may not be as bad as you think, tune in to hear all about it. Next week we will not have the Monday live event (again) as Dan is traveling to Canada to finally use his passport to get Starbucks! But we will have an episode drop next Wednesday as well as bonus content for the Spinners.

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 25: Singer-songwriter, producer, guitarist and drummer LeRoy Bell. With his famous uncle and Philly Sound hitmaker Thom Bell as a mentor, during the 1970s he wrote or co-wrote songs for Elton John, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Temptations, Freda Payne, the Three Degrees, Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis and others. For John, he co-wrote the hit, “Mama Can't Buy You Love.” He was also one-half of the duo Bell and James, which released three albums and notched the funky dance hit, “Livin' It Up (Friday Night).” Along the way he shared the stage with superstars like B.B. King and Joe Cocker, released solo albums and led a group called LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends, and in 2011 was a standout on TV's The X Factor talent show. RECORDED MARCH 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Visit your usual podcast subscription service to add us to your list. Visit our website for more details on becoming a sponsor and buying merch. All of this at stillspinningpodcast.com. It was a tough week for Gen X kids, those of us who grew up in the 80's. We lost some BIG names in the past week and Dan and Nicole discuss the losses, the lives and how it feels as though celebrity deaths are getting closer and closer to us. RIP Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Hulk Hogan and Ozzy Osbourne. A recent American Airlines flight had to evacuate the passengers via the slide and of course there is video. Side note, is there ANYTHING happening in the world that is not being captured on video?? Ah the “joys” of 2025. Anyhoodle, Dan has some thoughts on the evacuation and some issues that no one is really talking about. This leads to a whole discussion on if Dan and Nicole would help in this kind of situation (spoiler, the answer is yes) AND how Dan would run things. There is a town in France who wants tourists to PUT ON THEIR CLOTHES. Topless-ness is an issue for both men and women in this town and they are sick of it. Cover it up folks! Nicole was recently in Moline and saw a person with no shoes walking all over. It is a whole vibe and discussion on the podcast this week. The live recording is OFF for next week (August 4th) as Nicole will be at the Wisconsin State Fair (aka her happy place) but there will be a regular episode release on Wednesday as well as some bonus content for the Spinners this Friday AND next! Have a great week everyone and thanks for joining us!

Hazel Tindall can't remember a time before she knew how to knit. Hazel learned to knit when knitting for sale was the only way that women earned money, when a job outside the home in town was too far to travel. Although her mother found knitting a chore, Hazel liked it, not only knitting sweater yokes for sale but exploring yarns and designs from outside her local sphere. When knitting was work, knitters put down their needles on Sundays, but in time knitting became a pleasure rather than a job for Hazel. She started knitting every day of the week. Eventually she began selling for sale not just sweaters but also designs for sweaters, vests, gloves, hats, and other colorwork designs. Loving color, she avoids sludgy color combinations in favor of bright hues. One member of the Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers & Dyers read about a World's Fastest Knitter competition, and the group believed that they could do better than the current standard. Hazel was found to be the fastest knitter in the group, so off she went to the contest, winning the title. Later, she traveled to Minnesota to defend the title; to her knowledge, she hasn't been beaten! Our Lang Fairy Tale for this episode is The Water-Lily and the Gold Spinners, which is a story about a prince who transforms himself into a crab, three cursed princesses, and a wicked witch whose love of cake proves her undoing...Also featuring that apparently famous hero 'The Wizard of Finland.' Whoever he is! If you are unfamiliar with the Lang Fairy Tales, these seminal collections were assembled between 1889 and 1913 by a married couple, folklorists and translators Nora and Andrew Lang, with most of the work done to compile them completed by Nora, also known as Leonora Blanche Alleyne.Assembled and published in 12 colour-coded "Fairy Books," the corpus the Langs put together included 798 fairy tales from across cultures, many of which had never before been translated into English. They were amongst the most influential books of their time, changing the course of children's literature - although they're hardly just for children, and often deal with quite challenging concepts.Today, purchasing a complete set of the Lang Fairy Books in good condition costs over £4,000 ($5,000+).Thankfully, the collections are all out of copyright, meaning that we can now tell these stories, in podcast form, many for the first time, and share them with a global audience, for free. Our plan is to release the stories between main series of Three Ravens, performing them straight (though with plenty of silly voices) letting the tales speak for themselves in all their madcap, sharp-edged, often quite bizarre glory. The only edits we have made are to amend some culturally-insensitive epithets, which typically pertain to ethnicity, with any such edits made by Eleanor Conlon.Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Hosted on Acast. What does a doomsday drama about nuclear annihilation have in common with a breezy adventure set on the Greek isles? Just the year they hit the big screen. We explore why Fail Safe feels eerily prophetic in the age of AI, and whether or not Eli Wallach should have been doing brownface so much (he shouldn't have). It's Sidney Lumet's tense Cold War thriller Fail Safe, starring Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, and Disney's sun-drenched mystery The Moon-Spinners, directed by James Neilson and featuring Hayley Mills and Eli Wallach. We apologize for not being around the past week, there were some “real life” things that needed to be dealt with. But we are BACK! And show 100 is next week! Spinners, we have some bonus content coming your way later this week so stay tuned. Kicking things off today - when does wearable tech (like smart watches and heart rate monitors) become a cause for stress and anxiety? Both Dan and Nicole share some personal stories about their tech and how it impacts them and of course there is always something in the news that speaks to how oversaturated with tech we all are. Dan hates snakes! He talks about a story out of Missouri about a snake popping out of a hood and there is one thing in particular about the story that really has him steamed. Think you know what it is? Or can you guess? Nicole did not correctly identify it but maybe you can. There is a bear cub being “raised” but people in a bear suit. It is adorable and terrifying and so many things could go wrong. Hear more about it! And finally, a female news anchor went into LABOR during a morning newscast and finished her shift. Should she get a medal or a reprimand? We have some thoughts. Thanks so much for joining us, we will see you again next week!

Maybe it is us but it seems there is a new term being used in the world almost every single week. This is true this week with the term “unbossing” which means something different to businesses than it does to workers. Basically workers no longer want to work in management roles, for a variety of reasons. Dan and Nicole both share personal stories that fall into this world. Have you ever visited a restaurant or store that is located near a high school, particularly when that high school has a lunch break or when it ends for the day? There is a McDonald's in Virginia that has a new 21 and over policy because of the behavior of the kids from a nearby school. Nicole and Dan discuss and talk about how scary kids can be. And finally, road rage has taken a turn (pun intended) and you will never believe what happened when a woman got mad and lost her shit. You can watch the (somewhat graphic) video here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DJFKE4eOjlk/ Nicole sent this to Dan but did not tell him what it was about. We encourage you to just watch it before reading anything about it. Thank you so much for checking us out! Spinners, we may have to write you an IOU on bonus content this week, we have some scheduling issues we are trying to work out. But we promise, we will load you up on bonus content as soon as we are able!
This week on the podcast, I'm recommending four sports movies from the 1970s. These aren't the usual titles you hear brought up. Some are a bit strange, some are just overlooked. All of them are worth checking out.Slap Shot (1977)Directed by George Roy Hill, who also did The Sting and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Paul Newman plays the player-coach of a struggling minor league hockey team. The film is known for its rough humor and violence on the ice. It was written by Nancy Dowd, based on her brother's experience in the minors. The Hanson Brothers, who steal most of their scenes, were played by real hockey players. The film didn't do well at first but built a strong following over the years. The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh (1979)This one is about astrology and basketball. A Pittsburgh team becomes good after aligning its players' zodiac signs. It stars Julius Erving, who was still playing in the NBA at the time. The movie was shot in actual basketball arenas and features real NBA footage. The soundtrack was put together by Thom Bell, known for his work with The Spinners and The Stylistics. It's not a typical sports movie, and it's not serious, but that's part of the appeal. One on One (1977) Robbie Benson stars as a small-town high school basketball player who gets a scholarship to a big college. Benson co-wrote the script. The film was directed by Lamont Johnson, who worked mostly in television but had a few feature films. The music is by Seals and Crofts. It's more grounded than the other films in this group. The basketball scenes are decent, and the story focuses on the pressure college athletes face. The World's Greatest Athlete (1973) A Disney comedy with John Amos and Tim Conway. They go to Africa to find a new track star and bring back a Tarzan-type athlete played by Jan-Michael Vincent. Vincent did some of his own stunts, including a few track scenes. The film mixes broad humor with some light sports moments. It's not realistic, and it wasn't supposed to be. Worth a look if you want something lighter. All four of these were made during a time when studios were trying different things with sports movies. None of them are exactly like the others. If you're looking for something off the usual path, any of these would work. This is probably the first in a series of episodes I will eventually do about sports movies from this decade, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast!
