Hello and welcome to episode 98 of the Still Spinning Podcast. We appreciate you checking us out! You can watch the live taping every Monday at 7 PM on Facebook, YouTube or Instagram OR wait until the official podcast release on Wednesday morning. Visit our website for more details on becoming a sponsor, buying merch and check out old episodes. All of this at stillspinningpodcast.com. Maybe it is us but it seems there is a new term being used in the world almost every single week. This is true this week with the term “unbossing” which means something different to businesses than it does to workers. Basically workers no longer want to work in management roles, for a variety of reasons. Dan and Nicole both share personal stories that fall into this world. Have you ever visited a restaurant or store that is located near a high school, particularly when that high school has a lunch break or when it ends for the day? There is a McDonald's in Virginia that has a new 21 and over policy because of the behavior of the kids from a nearby school. Nicole and Dan discuss and talk about how scary kids can be. And finally, road rage has taken a turn (pun intended) and you will never believe what happened when a woman got mad and lost her shit. You can watch the (somewhat graphic) video here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DJFKE4eOjlk/ Nicole sent this to Dan but did not tell him what it was about. We encourage you to just watch it before reading anything about it. Thank you so much for checking us out! Spinners, we may have to write you an IOU on bonus content this week, we have some scheduling issues we are trying to work out. But we promise, we will load you up on bonus content as soon as we are able!

An artist is someone with creativity, inspiration, and a singular vision. Are those traits limited to “fine” mediums? Who decides who gets to be an artist? In this episode of Borderscapes, ‘Between Fiber and Art,' host Maria McCoy explores why weavers have been blocked out of the fine art world. Drawing a line between art and craft causes problems. For one, it slights women. Fiber practices, including weaving, knitting, and sewing, are not only categorized as craft, but as “women's work.” Dismissing them discounts passionate women makers, a few of whom you'll meet as a guest of the East Sussex Guild of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers. Beyond that, a border between art and craft is just too limiting. Philip Sanderson, studio leader at West Dean Tapestry Studio, explains how tapestry weaving doesn't fit squarely in either category. So, can this border be dismantled? Listen in to find out!

The Spinners' story is one of perseverance, evolution, and timeless music that continues to resonate with fans of Motown, Philly Soul, funk, and classic R&B. Their smooth harmonies, intricate vocal arrangements, and signature choreography have made them one of the most enduring groups in soul music history. From their early days in Detroit with Motown to their meteoric rise with Atlantic Records, The Spinners are true legends of the genre.Formed in the '50s in Michigan, The Spinners came together as a vocal group determined to make their mark in the burgeoning R&B scene. They found themselves signed to Motown Records in the '60s, a label that was home to acts like The Temptations, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. But The Spinners never quite achieved the same success as their labelmates during their time there. They struggled to break through in a roster filled with some of the biggest names in soul music.Their fate changed in the early '70s when they made a decision that would define their career. Leaving Motown, the band joined Atlantic, under the guidance of producer Thom Bell. With Bell at the helm, The Spinners recorded a string of hits that defined an era. Songs like I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling in Love, One of a Kind (Love Affair), Mighty Love, and Then Came You—their duet with Dionne Warwick—all became massive hits. Their run of success continued throughout the '70s, with classic tracks like Games People Play and Rubberband Man. The group became known not only for their vocal prowess but also for their stage presence. Their synchronized dance moves and sharp suits made them one of the most exciting live acts of the era.As time passed, The Spinners underwent several lineup changes. They continued to tour and perform, keeping their music fresh for new generations of fans. Even as the music industry evolved, The Spinners remained a staple of classic soul, their songs continuing to be played on R&B stations and featured in movies, commercials, and TV shows.Amidst the transitions, one of the most significant moments in the group's more recent history was the inclusion of Jessie Peck. A longtime fan of The Spinners, Jessie grew up admiring them as a child, wishing one day to be a part of their act. Before joining the group, Jessie had already made a name for himself as a talented vocalist with a deep appreciation for classic R&B. His rich baritone and smooth delivery made him a natural fit for The Spinners' sound, and when the opportunity arose for him to join the legendary group, it was a dream come true.Jessie's arrival injected new energy into the group while maintaining the signature style that fans had come to love. He stepped into his role with the utmost respect for the foundation laid by those who came before him. His passion for the music, combined with his natural talent and stage presence, made him a seamless addition to the lineup. As a performer, Jessie embraced The Spinners' commitment to delivering not just great music but an unforgettable show. The Spinners have always been about more than just singing—they're entertainers in the truest sense, combining tight harmonies with choreographed moves that keep audiences engaged from the first note to the last.Even after decades in the industry, The Spinners continue to thrive, bringing their soulful sound to audiences around the world. Their influence can be heard in countless artists who followed in their footsteps, and their ability to bridge generations of music lovers is a testament to the timeless nature of their songs. Jessie Peck's presence in the group is a reflection of their commitment to excellence, ensuring that The Spinners remain not just a nostalgic act but a living, breathing force in the world of soul, R&B, and classic funk.Jessie Peck joins us this week to share some amazing stories about The Spinners.#classichits #r&b #musiclegends

Hello everyone and welcome to the Still Spinning Podcast, episode #90! We recorded on St. Patrick's Day so we kick things off by talking about Dan's very Irish meal and playing a little game of "How is this Name Pronounced." Nothing like a quiz to get things moving! There was a large tech startup event last week and Tech Crunch listed off their 10 start-ups to watch and holy moly, I am scared for the future. Also if you have never wanted the TV show Silicon Valley, Nicole highly recommends it and it will give you a really good understanding of start-ups and what all happens in that process. But back to the terrifying future we are leading into. Suffice it to say, there are a LOT of AI startups and one really scares Nicole. It has to do with Zoom and cloning. There is also one that sounds like a good idea and would benefit farmers. We also found out what kind of animals AND farm Dan would have, should he decide to change up his life and become a farmer. I bet you cannot guess what it is. Have you ever left anything in a hotel room? Have you ever FOUND anything in a hotel room? There is a story from a hotel in Michigan and you will not believe what the housekeeping staff finds under the bed. Dan almost tells us all a story about something HE found under a hotel room bed but decides it is not a story for the general population so he is holding on to it for the Bonus Spin, available to all of our Spinners (aka subscribers). We chat about what it would be like to find such a thing... All of this and so much more on episode 90! You can check out our website at stillspinningpodcast.com for more information on the show, to catch up on past episodes and even to become a Spinner before Friday's Bonus comes out. Have a great week everyone!

** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 14: Scholar Dr. Scot Brown, a historian of African-American history, popular culture, and music. A lecturer, commentator, author, writer and musician, producer, and songwriter, Prof. Brown has been working on a book examining Dayton, Ohio's great 1970s funk bands. He has appeared as a subject matter expert in programs covering Heatwave, The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Ohio Players, Midnight Star, DJ Quik, Lakeside, Patrice Rushen, Mtume, and James Brown and Bootsy Collins. This rap session is a treat for serious funk fans and curious music lovers alike, featuring two of the foremost authorities and advocates. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. From childhood memories of feeling disconnected in the realm of romance to the surprising healing she's found while performing on stage, this episode explores the vulnerability and courage that art offers when you least expect it. Join Stacy as she reflects on how art, whether through writing, storytelling, or performing, can be a lifeline that leads us back to ourselves.Full Spirals with Stacy Parish is a reader-supported publication. Welcome to episode 86 of the Still Spinning Podcast. We are delighted you could join us! If you have not see the video of the whale swallowing and then spitting out the kayaker, you simply must. It is really unreal. We chat about kayaking, the likelihood of this happening, if this guy should ever get into the water again and so much more on this topic. Valentine's Day was last week and Spinners got special, holiday content! You could have but you are not a Spinner, it might be time to think about some of your life choices. ANYWAY, there were shelters and zoos all over the US who had some VERY fun fundraisers they were doing. We chatted about the fundraisers, if Dan could have participated and somehow started talking about feminine hygiene products. You really never know where we will head! Surveillance pricing is a real thing and it sucks and should scare you. Dan breaks it down for us and we chat about how it all works and the implications. And finally if you have a lottery ticket, make sure you check to see if it is a winner!! A person in Arkansas nearly threw out a $100K winner. Check out our website, stillspinningpodcast.com to see how you can buy merch, become a Spinner and listen to old episodes. We will see you all next week!
Hello everyone, we are BACK! Nicole was gone last week so we missed an episode, but the Spinners did get some bonus content so if you ever needed a reason to become a Spinner, we think that is it! You can find out how by visiting stillspinningpodcast.com. Nicole was gone because she was on a CRUISE! That is right, a cruise! She fills everyone in on what her experience was like from boarding the ship to the all-inclusive drink package. Overall, she had a blast because of the people she was with and a special shout out to her Aunt Jean for sending over some cruise essentials, all which came in handy on the boat. Did you know you will still feel like you are moving for DAYS after you get off the boat? Nicole sure did not and so the tale of motion sickness carried on even after disembarking. The Super Bowl just happened, the Superb Owl for those who know, and Nicole and Dan HAVE to talk about the game and most importantly the commercials. Dan did not watch, and tells us all why, so it was up to Nicole to provide the best and weirdest trends in the commercials. All in all, not the best year for them but certainly not the worst. Lots of facial hair and AI ads, those seemed to be the most common threads. We hope you enjoyed today's podcast and we look forward to seeing you again next week! PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). Send us a textToday's episode is about the seasons of our lives. The phrase "seasons in life" is a metaphor that compares the different stages of a person's life to the changing seasons of the year. Each season has its own characteristics, and so do the different periods of life, which can include times of growth, change, and dormancy. Here are some examples of the seasons of life and their characteristics:Spring: A time of new beginnings and youthSummer: A time of passion, growth, and young adulthoodAutumn: A time of change, reflection, and maturityWinter: A time of waiting, struggles, and an ending Some say that the human life cycle has six main stages: fetus, baby, child, adolescent, adult, and elderly. However, people are continually changing throughout all of these stages. Some say that it's important to know what season of life you're in, and that no season lasts forever. I personally just put together that I'm in the Autumn of my life and I'm embracing this time by allowing myself to feel all of the feels around getting older, AND I am constantly inspired by the women I work with in my Sages Story Circles because most of them are a “season ahead of me” in the winter of their lives, and they constantly bring forward rich and heartwarming content that I feel so grateful to receive.Today I'm sharing two stories or rather two pieces with you. One is from a poetry group I'm currently workshopping with (Meredith Heller's Writing by Heart Poetry Workshops) and the other is from one of my Sages named Julie titled: Ode to an Aging Body. These ladies get me and they're always providing just what I need when I need it—and the things they share are often so profound that I feel the need to share them widely—because as I say at the end of every Full Spirals Episode–we really are all in this together. Please enjoy this episode honoring the seasons of our lives.Support the showHelp Support Full Spirals and give the Arts a Voice! Hello and welcome to episode 79 of the Still Spinning Podcast. We hate to start off by breaking your heart BUT there will be NO podcast next week as Dan and Nicole are both traveling. So sorry! We will try to get something out to our Spinners so now is a good time to sign up. We kick things off with a story that affects us all - the FBI came out and said we should STOP using our phones to text. WTH did we do before texting?? They do offer some "safer" options. Tune in to hear what they are. Sorry, this might be a bit educational for you all. Is it ok to walk around your house barefoot?? NO is the short answer. One of the hosts does walk around without shoes in the house and one does. Think you know which is which?? The new speed record was broken in Iowa and it is SCARY. We discuss the driving habits of both Dan and Nicole and they share some speeding stories of their own. And finally, Chris Rock storms out of a private party where he was performing. Why, you may ask? Well we discuss the likely reason and share some thoughts/insight into our own performing and how we handle things like this. All of this an oh so much more! Want to become a Spinner or listen to some old episodes? Check out our website stillspinningpodcast.com for all of that PLUS you could purchase some merch for all your holiday gift giving needs.

Stan Hugill was known in his lifetime as the ‘Last Working Shantyman' and became a guardian of the tradition of maritime music. Stan had a colourful and eventful life. He spent 23 years at sea including a stint as the official shantyman on board the steel four-masted barque Garthpool, the last British commercial sailing ship. In the Second World War he worked as the helmsman on the ss Automedon which was sunk by a German auxiliary cruiser and led to Stan being held as a prisoner of war for four years. In later life he taught sailing skills in Wales and aboard the sail-training vessel Pamir. In these years Stan began to write down the shanties he had learned, authoring several books, recording several albums and regularly performing in public. He became something of a star in the British folk scene anchoring a BBC show Dance and Skylark in the 1960s ‘featuring The Spinners with Bosun Stan Hugill who welcomes friends and visitors aboard his old Sailing Barque.' To find out more Dr Sam Willis spoke with Mollie Carlyle, a historian of maritime music with an encyclopaedic knowledge of her own and an expert on Stan's life. Hosted on Acast. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 75 of the Still Spinning Podcast. On tonight's episode we talk about the end of October which means it is Halloween season! Dan shares his decorating and plan for the big night and Nicole shares a list of the most popular candy. Folks in the chat share their favorite candy as well and we reminisce about the days of razor blades in apples. A few airline stories make the podcast this week. The first is a new process American Airlines is trying out to prevent people from boarding in a group they are not assigned to. Dan and Nicole are all for the literal bells and whistles of this new program. At an airport in New Zealand, there is a crack down on how long people can HUG before they are asked to take it to the parking lot. It is pretty funny. Finally, the holiday season is upon us, and that is the gift of giving, but a story about an ANTI gift list caught our attention, and we chatted about it. Oh and also Dan has a new dog! We meet Charlie and get some real good pets. Thanks so much for checking us out. You can learn more at our website stillspinningpodcast.com. Next week's show is TBD as Nicole will be out of town, so watch our Facebook page to find out when we will be back on the air for the regular episode. Spinners will be getting some bonus content later this week.

When Knit Picks was founded by husband and wife team Kelly and Bob Petkun in 2002, the company began with a mail-order catalog and soon added online purchasing. Buying yarn online seemed both strange and inevitable: knitters began choosing yarns that they could only see onscreen, in the early days of functional search engines, at a time when many people had internet only at the office if at all. But for crafters who lacked easy access to a local yarn store or even a big-box craft store, being able to order craft supplies online broadened the horizons of knitting. After carrying other companies' yarns for several years, the Petkuns began working directly with mills in South America to create yarn lines that were exclusive to Knit Picks. Several of their first yarns, including Wool of the Andes, Andean Treasure, and Alpaca Cloud, are still available (though the Butterfly Kisses eyelash yarn that was a staple of the early 2000's has been discontinued). With the success of their exclusive yarns, Knit Picks began working with manufacturers to create their own tools, most significantly an extensive range of knitting needles. Sustainability-Minded Yarns By making their yarns available directly to knitters, Knit Picks was able to keep their prices low and developed a reputation for affordability. Perhaps less well known, though, have been their efforts to offer sustainably produced yarns. In this episode, Alexis Wilson explains that the company recently completed the process to certify their warehouse to the Responsible Wool Standard, the last link in the chain that makes their 100% US-made High Desert yarn line fully RWS-certified. High Desert yarns use Shaniko Wool, sourced from ranches that meet multiple environmental and social responsibility standards and are demonstrated to capture carbon in the soil. Even before the official RWS certification, Alexis observes, Knit Picks purchased their wool, alpaca, and mohair from certified Responsible Alpaca Standard, Responsible Mohair Standard, and RWS sources. In addition to natural-fiber yarns, they have added several lines that use innovative methods of recycling or reclaiming waste fibers: Oceana (https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/oceana/c/5420504), which features Seaqual Upcycled Marine Plastic; Salvage (https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/salvage/c/5420505), which contains recycled cotton; and Samia (https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/samia/c/5420462), which includes cupro, a silky fiber made from waste cotton produced in a closed-loop process. The environmental concern extends to their wooden needles, which are made from sustainably harvested forests. For Every Knitter (and Dyer and Weaver and Spinner) Although “knit” is right in the name, Knit Picks offers products for other crafts as well (and not just through their sister brand Crochet.com (https://www.crochet.com/)). In addition to finished yarns, Knit Picks offers the Bare (https://www.knitpicks.com/yarn/bare-dye-your-own/c/300110) line of popular yarns ready to be dyed by consumers, as well as a variety of natural and synthetic dye products (https://www.knitpicks.com/accessories/yarn-dyes/c/300508). Spinners can select the wool blends used in some popular Knit Picks yarns as processed wool tops (https://www.knitpicks.com/3001/filter-products?Category=Roving) to make their own yarns. For weavers and machine knitters, the popular Dishie cotton comes on cones as well as in balls, and Alexis reveals that some weights of their staple yarns Wool of the Andes and Palette will be offered on cones soon, too. For nearly 20 years, Knit Picks produced almost every product offered on the site. In recent years, though, they have started supplementing their offerings with select yarns that they believe customers would enjoy, such as Kelbourne Woolens Germantown and Baa Ram Ewe Woodnote. Alexis looks forward to adding yarns from Berroco in upcoming months. In this Spotlight Episode, discover the sustainable side of Knit Picks.
