Our special guest is back for a second installment, so we decided to show her exactly what Steve and Brandon put themselves through each week by playing a movie that is waaayyy less competently done than last week's episode. But first, we talk about our #dreams for a bit and look for a little analysis. Killer Kites: Abby receives a crappy plastic kite as part of her grandmother's estate. Unbeknownst to Abby, this isn't just some ordinary kite. It is a blood-thirsty communist PInko kite set on the destruction of capitalist society. After the mysterious death of her brother, Abby has to assemble a crack squad to combat the Red Kite menace. Boys From County Hell final grade: Steve An upper-echelon movie for the ultra-low-budget set. I was entertained. Jokes hit. The movie's lead star was better than expected. 4.0/5.0 Brandon A good way to kill an hour or so. Not my favorite of the micro-budget movies, though, so have to rank it lower than some others. 3.5/5.0 Amanda I was entertained by the absurdity, but the story itself was underdeveloped. It left me with a lot of unanswered questions. 3.2/5.0 Cocktail of the Week: Plastic Kite 1 1/2 oz Bourbon 3/4 oz Amaro 1/4 oz Campari 3/4 oz Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice 1/4 oz Simple Syrup Combine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to chill and combine. Serve in a martini glass. As usual, feel free to chill the glass if you want. Double strain it if you want. Garnish if you want. Make it your own. Cocktail Grade: A good variation of the more famous Paper Plane. Even our non-bourbon-fan control group said the drink was "not terrible." Bourbon fans will give it higher marks. 4/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

Nothing beats the sight of a top predator as it hunts. In the British Isles that means looking up. Our birds of prey are bouncing back after decades of shooting, poisoning and habitat loss. Buzzard numbers are up by 80% since 1995 and Red Kite by 2000%. Peregrine Falcon are thriving in London and Marsh Harriers have returned to our wetlands. Helen gets up close to Black Kites and an Eagle Owl at the Owl and Raptor Centre in Kent and travel writer Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent describes the extraordinary migration of tens of thousands of birds of prey through the Batumi Gap on the border of Georgia and Turkey. The RSPB's Mark Thomas and Robert Benson of the Moorland Association discuss the threat that birds of prey still face on some of Britain's shooting estates and Jennifer Ackerman, author of 'What An Owl Knows' joins Tom and Helen to explore the science behind the night-hunting skills of so many owls.Producer: Alasdair CrossAssistant Producer: Toby FieldRare Earth is produced in association with the Open University

Dr Ruth Tingay is a conservationist and campaigner who has spent her career primarily focused upon the world's raptor population (that's Birds of Prey, rather than Veloci-...) Her career was inadvertently kickstarted through working at Heathrow airport's Animal Reception Centre. Here she welcomed back the UK's Red Kite population for their reintroduction to our country, as well as the usual pampered felines, escaped pooches, and boxes stuffed full of mystery birds. Throw Nile Crocodiles, an annual Mexican Hawk Migration of 4.6 million birds and the DNA of Golden Eagles into the mix, and you get an incredibly varied career that has leapfrogged the globe from Mauritius to Mexico then on to Madagascar and many other countries beginning with ‘M' besides. But since 2009, Ruth has been focused upon the plights of our domestic birds; shedding light upon wildlife crime through her Raptor Persecution blog, and through joining with Mark Avery and Chris Packham to spearhead their Wild Justice which is holding the Governments of Britain to account for ongoing enviro-failings and eco-crimes. KG & Paul often refer to leadership practice as being contextual. No one size, style or framework fits all. And despite their many years of combined leadership practice, they have barely experienced the sheer diversity of contexts where leaders 'play'. And so they invited Nicole Schleicher, General Manager of Services and Impact at redkite, for a leadership chat over a glass of wine. redkite is a donor funded charity providing services and support to families who have a child with cancer. These are undeniably high stakes contexts, and the leadership required to provide the most valuable services, and to sustainably contribute to an organisation's vision, seems a different beast altogether.Join Paul & KG as they explore with Nicole what it takes to lead in these contexts - the aspirations, desires and very real and complex challenges. And of course, our generous sponsor Annadale Cellars provides us with a most delectable wine to keep the conversation running smoothly! For this episode Annandale Cellars provided an incredubly robust and tasty Italian wine from producer, Tenute Cesaroni. The 2021 Le Barbatelle Rosso Piceno from the Marche region is usually a blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano but this particular blend includes some Lacrima di Morro D'Alba, giving it a more of a floral lift. It's a great table wine, and Paul & KG both fantasised about a long, outdoor lunch by a Tuscan villa as they enthusiastically sipped on their wine! On this day dedicated to creating remarkable memories, David is in the thick of it. And, while just being in Cinque Terre will undoubtedly do the trick, he does what he does best, he consciously manifests ones where the average person may not. A key element of this process is understanding that any exceptional event, will be the building block for a remarkable memory. To most, it's not completely understood that "exceptional" simply means one standard deviation from the mean - which often means that the event may be construed as negative at the time, but later will be embraced and recalled with fond affection. Why Kant There Be Peace?  Excerpts from Immanuel Kant's essay “Toward Perpetual Peace, a Philosophical Sketch.” Comforting, practical, brave, and clear. First Section, Which Contains the Preliminary Articles for Perpetual Peace among States: “No peace settlement which secretly reserves issues for a future war shall be considered valid.” “No independently existing state (irrespective of whether it is larger or small) shall be able to be acquired by another state through inheritance, exchange, purchase or gift.” “Standing armies (miles perpetuus) shall gradually be abolished entirely.” “The state shall not contract debts in connection with its foreign affairs.” “No state shall forcibly interfere with the constitution and government of another state.” “No state shall allow itself such hostilities in wartime as would make mutual trust in a future period of peace impossible. Such acts would include the employment of assassins, poisoners, breach of surrender, incitement of treason within the enemy state etc.” Music: Dalai Llama Rides a Bike and The Red Kite by Javier “Peke” Rodriguez. The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman
Madeleine Kunin on poetry, pearls and politics

Gov. Madeleine Kunin is an open book. Vermont's only female governor has been chronicling her life in books since the mid-1990s, when she penned a memoir, Living a Political Life. Since serving as Vermont's governor from 1985 to 1991, Kunin went on to jobs as deputy secretary of education and ambassador to Switzerland. Along the way she has been sharing her insights about women and leadership in other books, including Pearls, Politics and Power and The New Feminist Agenda. Kunin has lately turned her focus back to her own life. In Coming of Age: My Journey to the Eighties, Kunin, 87, offers an intimate personal narrative of growing older. She has a new book of poetry, Red Kite, Blue Sky, in which she chronicles her experience of love, loss and loneliness in the aftermath of the 2018 death of her husband, John Hennessey, Jr., and after enduring a year of Covid-19 isolation. Kunin continues to be active in politics as the founder of the Vermont chapter of Emerge, which trains Democratic women to run for office. The former governor periodically testifies in the Vermont Legislature and remains a keen observer of politics, penning regular columns for VTDigger. “We have to be vigilant to protect our democracy and to push back,” Kunin says about threats to democratic institutions from President Trump and his supporters. “That's all the more reason for people to enter politics. We have to have voices who will speak out and speak the truth.”
