Female Leaders | The 7 Power Gaps Suppressing Your Potential Female leaders are not men in skirts; they are experiencing, processing, and tackling workplace challenges in a completely different way. Kathy Caprino decided to step back from her coaching journey and look at the most significant hurdles women are facing. When she began to examine what was holding women back, two words came to mind—bravery and power. Imposter syndrome manifests in different ways, creating power gaps that prevent us from having the critical confidence and self-image we need to thrive in the workplace. The 7 Most Damaging Power Gaps Power gaps keep you far away from where you want to be because they are directly tied to a lack of internal or external power and they affect your capacity to operate as an effective leader. Through her own experience and her work with thousands of female leaders, Kathy compiled a list of 7 major power gaps that will prevent you from achieving the level of success you desire: Not Recognizing Your Special Talents, Abilities and Accomplishments Communicating From Fear Not Strength Reluctance to Ask For What You Deserve Isolating From Influential Support Acquiescing Instead of Saying “STOP!” Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream Allowing Past Trauma To Define You It is never easy going toe-to-toe with the unknown, so identify a power gap that is most damaging to you as a female leader and start to chip away at it. This is not meant to be an overnight transformation; it requires daily persistence. Power gaps shake us at our core so we have to dig deep to address them. It is a massive undertaking, but consistent progress breeds lasting results. “I know it’s scary to make the move from corporate life into your own business and you feel like you don’t know enough, but I’m going to ask you to really listen to yourself. You know a heck of a lot more than you think you do.” - Kathy Caprino Are you ready to finally leave your corporate career and start your own venture? Or perhaps you have launched your business already and are facing important new challenges that you wonder if you’re adequately prepared for. In this episode, I discuss why so many small businesses fail and share my raw, real-life experiences around what I learned in transitioning from my 18-year corporate career to running my own coaching and consulting business, Ellia Communications. You’ll hear about the biggest gaps in knowledge and experience that kept me from having a smoother transition, and I offer some essential information that I wish I had understood before making the leap. The biggest surprise for me in running a business was that even though I had been in marketing for years and had risen to the level of Vice President overseeing numerous large-scale programs, initiatives and staff in my corporate life, I still was very far away from being fully prepared for entrepreneurial life, and for serving as a true leader in my own venture. The key knowledge gaps I explore here include: 1) Unconscious tendencies and blocks around successfully managing and relating to money, 2) Not selecting the best partners and why we often continually fail at it, 3) Why we need to step up to being a true leader and making critical decisions rather than staying stuck as the “doer” or “manager,” 4) Why pivoting more quickly and flexibly is essential, and 5) Listening to your own instincts and intuition and making moves that align with your truest core values and visions rather than deferring to “gurus” who don’t necessarily know their stuff or have your best interests at heart. Guest expert Kathy Caprino shares a roadmap for finding the right direction for your career. Kathy takes a holistic approach to career change, encouraging people to understand themselves and their motivations, and to be patient. She shared 5 steps to a successful career change: Step back. Refocus on yourself, look at who you’ve been over the course of your life. Let go of thinking patterns and behaviors that keep you stuck. These cause you to self-sabotage. Say yes to your compelling vision. If there’s something you’ve always dreamed of doing, decide to take it seriously. Try it on. Try out your dream, talk to people who have done it, and get past the fantasy. Create it smart. This process takes time. Don’t rush. Have a plan, then hold yourself accountable.
