If your go-to stress strategies aren't cutting it anymore, you're not alone, and there's a reason for that. Today on Finding Brave, we're joined by deeply inspiring The Stress Coach, Jordan Friedman, to explore what really works for managing stress during high-anxiety times and why most stress-reduction methods miss the mark. With over 30 years of experience, Jordan's science-backed, creative approach has helped thousands reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and regain control. A former Director of Columbia University's Health Education Program and author of The Stress Manager's Manual, Jordan is also the voice behind The Chill Factory podcast and app. His unique work blends evidence-based techniques with creativity and humor, including offering guided "chill tours" through Central Park to help groups manage stress in fun, unexpected ways. In this episode, we dig into why so many stress-reduction methods fail us during uncertain times and what we can do differently to support our nervous systems. Jordan breaks down what happens to the body and mind in extended states of anxiety and offers practical, sustainable strategies for managing stress. Plus, you'll get a sneak peek into our upcoming Central Park Calm Retreat on June 13th, 2025 - co-hosted by Jordan and myself - where participants will experience these transformative practices firsthand in the amazingly beautiful urban oasis of NYC's Central Park. Whether you're supporting a stressed-out team, raising anxious kids, or looking for ways to stay steady and nurture your own calm and wellbeing, this episode offers the clarity and calm you've been searching for!   Key Highlights From This Episode: The remarkable personal story that led Jordan to his work in stress management. [05:11] Hidden stressors in today's unpredictable world and their impact on your health. [15:40] How cutting back on news, TV, and social media can help ease stress. [20:39] Why so many stress reduction methods fail (and what to do instead). [25:38] Practical strategies for effective, long-term stress management. [30:03] The science behind Jordan's potent ‘Mod Squad' stress-reduction technique. [35:11] Ways that community and support help mitigate fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. It's a vital part of life. It saves us from getting hit by cars, it helps us focus on – solving problems. But when stress becomes a way of life instead of a part of life, – that's when we see more of the problems.” — Jordan Friedman [0:20:13] “Yes, meditating can help you feel calmer. It can take the edge off [your] stress and anxiety, but if that stress and anxiety continues to flow into your life – you might get into a situation where meditation isn't enough.” — Jordan Friedman [0:26:52] “Something we get wrong – is that we're putting band aids on things that need more attention than a band aid.” — Jordan Friedman [0:27:25] “We have great control over our fight or flight responses; maybe not initially when we're first slammed with the stressor, but pretty soon after, the way we think about things [and] what we do can help us get back on our feet and move in a clearer, more confident, less stressed way.” — Jordan Friedman [0:34:37] “It's not only about changing your life situations to stop the fire hydrant of stress. It's also doing things to – keep your roots solid; breathing, sleeping, exercise, all of it.” — Jordan Friedman [0:38:34] “Reliable, predictable things in your life, [like] going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, – will help counter a lot of the lack of predictability that causes so much stress in the world.” — Jordan Friedman [0:44:09]   Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “You have a lot of knowledge and expertise, but if you continually doubt the strength of your opinions, or the importance of sharing your ideas, you are going to lose the ability to shape where your career is going.” – Kathy Caprino  Confidence is key as you step into being the most powerful version of you, and this is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, therapist (focused on systems and communication), researcher, and now in coaching and training with thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents. Thousands of people struggle with confidence issues, from not feeling “good enough,” to being insecure about their skills and abilities and suffering from imposter syndrome to experiencing “perfectionistic overfunctioning” that negatively impacts our health, well-being, life satisfaction and quality of life. From working with teams, I know, too, that both new and seasoned managers and high-potential folks at startups and other types of organizations often fear they don't know nearly enough to do their jobs well, and their confidence is flagging. This is why today I'm ingfocus on the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do - practically and strategically - to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn't impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future. In this episode, I reference my recent Forbes blog post, 5 Ways Your Lack Of Confidence Is Apparent And Hurting You, which I encourage you to read. If you find the information helpful in identifying and overcoming a lack of confidence in yourself, I would be so happy if you would share the article and episode episode with your teams, colleagues and friends who could benefit.   Highlights from this Episode: How questioning your own ideas is holding you back right now in so many different ways [6:16] The importance of recognizing the environment you are in before sharing your ideas, and an example from my own career that highlights this [8:37] How the 7 damaging power gaps impact your confidence, courage to grow and your self-respect and self-acceptance today [13:02] What agonizing over your performance and how others think of you will interfere with what you need to do to experience more success and reward [14:22] Some places where you can get outside help if you're feeling as if you're “blowing it” in the workplace, and how this will help you move forward in your career [16:27] What to do the next time you find yourself being hypercritical of someone, plus what I've seen from my experience as a therapist that explains why this is happening [17:44] An example from my own life as a parent when I truly learned that it's not possible to be perfect, and nor should we strive to be [20:55] Where jealousy and the feeling of being threatened by others' success often stems from, and how to begin leaving these emotions behind so that you can move forward [24:23] Action steps to take to help you determine what you are good at and how that matters [29:40] What unshakable success requires and why so many of us don't have it [34:02]   For More Information:  Kathy's Post, 5 Ways Your Lack Of Confidence Is Apparent And Hurting You https://kathycaprino.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathycaprino https://www.facebook.com/ElliaCommunications https://twitter.com/kathycaprino   Resources Mentioned: American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Kathy's 6-Session Career Breakthrough Coaching Program & Career Path Self-Assessment Kathy's TEDx Talk, Time To Brave Up  Kathy's Forbes Interview with Bestselling Author Gretchen Rubin, How Bestselling Author Gretchen Rubin Uncovers Life-Changing Behaviors And Touches Millions Kathy's interview with Dr. Nate Zinsser, Developing a Confident Mind: Key Strategies for Experiencing Unshakable Success  7 Signs Of Perfectionistic Overfunctioning – How To Recognize It In Yourself And Change It   Finding Brave interviews with Dr. Zinsser (Parts 1 and 2) * * * * OTHER KEY RESOURCES:   KATHY'S DIGITAL CAREER COACHING CLONE – ‘KATHY CAPRINO AI” – IS HERE!   I'm very excited to announce the release of my new Kathy Caprino AI career and leadership coaching clone! Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated re-release of Episode #197. “What you want to understand is that before you leap you need to take action to address what is making you so miserable. If you don't do that, you are going to wake up two years later in the new career and you're going to be having the same problems.” – Kathy Caprino  I'm very excited to share this solo episode which is my “Editor's Choice” for this week - one of the most downloaded episodes over the six years of producing this podcast. Today's show shares important content and advice for professionals from all levels and industries who are ready to make an important career shift but want guidance on how to do it successfully, reducing risk and wasted time. In this episode, I share what I've seen are the 5 biggest blunders career changers make, and I have to admit that I have made each one of these mistakes myself, which is why I can speak to how easily they can happen if we're not aware of them and or we're not making the right decisions and choices. These blunders are costly, painful and take a tremendous toll on your self-esteem, confidence, and your hopes and visions for the future. And they can hurt your finances, personal relationships, mental and physical health and more. But there is a way to avoid these career change mistakes, and it starts with remembering that you are an amazing individual with many important gifts, talents and capabilities to share and gaining clarity on exactly what those are. The question is how to get on the path to leveraging these talents and abilities in new ways that authentically fit with who you really are, and what you want for your life, and for your family and your livelihood. Listen in for a full look at how to avoid the 5 biggest career change blunders and stay to the end as I reveal the 5 essential steps to take when you want change of any kind, in your career and in any area of your life. As always, thank you for listening, and please let me know if the information I share today helps you navigate these particularly challenging and ever-changing times we find ourselves in right now.   Highlights from this Episode: What is “The Pendulum Effect” that creates havoc in our careers, and examples of the ways that I and others have suffered from it [4:20] Why I believe that this is such a common mistake people make, and what to understand before you decide to make a career change [7:50] Why it's essential to have sound financial transition plan in place before you pivot or change careers [10:50] How having a firm understanding of (and physically “trying on”) the actual work and tasks you'll be engaged in in the new career will benefit you in the long run [12:30] Why doing functional tasks and work you enjoy is not enough to bring you career happiness and success if you can't support the strategies, tactics and values of your company and work culture [15:10] Examples of times that I didn't “dig deep enough” to understand what I really wanted and needed in my own career, and why I want you to avoid this costly blunder [16:46] How the trap of believing that success will be instant and automatic for you will be detrimental to you and your career journey [22:47] A powerful 5-step process to engage in if you wish to make any type of significant change in your career (and life) [27:27] For More Information: https://kathycaprino.com/ and https://kathycaprino.com/career-help https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathycaprino https://www.facebook.com/ElliaCommunications https://twitter.com/kathycaprino https://www.instagram.com/kathycaprino/   Resources Mentioned: Kathy's Career Path Self-Assessment survey   AND COMING SOON! SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are exploring your personal brand as we craft and cultivate your narrative. Crafting your own personal narrative involves intentionally shaping and defining the story of who you are, what you stand for, and how you present yourself to the world. It goes beyond a mere collection of facts about your life; it's about curating a compelling and authentic narrative that communicates your values, experiences, and aspirations. Do you visually and verbally represent what you find important on your daily walk? Are you living your best life? Does that sound like work? Well, anything worth doing is worth doing well.  Don't leave your brand up for misinterpretation. Be clear and concise. Live it, breathe it, and walk the walk. If you stopped today, what type of story would your body of work tell? If you don't see any compelling twists and turns, heart-warming interactions, or an inspiring outcome, you may have more work to do and investments to make.  Living your best life is not coasting along, adapting yourself to get over every challenge or through every narrow pass. Start carving your own path and blazing your own trail.  Right now, you have what it takes and the only thing holding you back is you. Kathy Caprino kicks us off with How To Create Your Legacy And Sell Yourself Through Your Personal Brand found at forbes.com At brandcredential.com I found 7 Essential Personal Brand Traits to Help You Stand Out Allaya Cooks-Campbell enlightens with The importance of knowing yourself: your key to fulfillment found at betterup.com CHALLENGE: Crafting your personal narrative is an ongoing process that involves self-discovery, refinement, and adaptation. It's a powerful tool, helping you shape how you are perceived and creating a cohesive and compelling story that reflects the essence of who you are. I Know YOU Can Do It!

266: The Sexy Lie: How Self-Objectification Damages Women's Lives

Finding Brave

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2023 49:13

As our reality becomes more entwined with social media, an ever-increasing number of girls and women are engaging in self-objectification. And while gaining money, resources and agency may seem empowering, there are hidden impacts to this behavior that can have far-reaching consequences for women, girls, and our society as a whole. Today's guest, Dr. Caroline Heldman, describes this phenomenon as ‘the sexy lie' and outlines it in her new book The Sexy Lie: The War on Women's Bodies and How to Fight Back. Dr. Heldman has spent the bulk of her career engaging in issues around gender and social justice. She has published seven books on gender justice and politics and is a professor of Critical Theory & Social Justice at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in numerous documentaries, including Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. She is also the  Executive Director of The Representation Project, a political commentator for Spectrum and CNN, and co-founder of the New Orleans Women's Shelter, the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, End Rape on Campus (EROC), Faculty Against Rape (FAR), and led the End Rape Statute of Limitations (ERSOL) that successfully abolished the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. In today's conversation with Caroline, we tackle the difficult topic of how women are sexually objectified, the way it's normalized within mainstream culture, and how this makes it virtually impossible for women to achieve full value in society. Caroline provides a comprehensive breakdown of ‘the sexy lie' and how mistaking attention for power has led to the common misconception that self-objectification is empowering before unpacking the profoundly harmful effects of objectification on girls and women. Listeners will also hear her expert insights on the role of capitalism, profit margins, and the patriarchy in women's sexual objectification and the structural changes it will take to alter these entrenched systems of power. Our conversation also explores the insidious impact of objectification culture in the workplace before hearing some much-needed advice on what women can do to fight back against internalizing the sexy lie and how to change society for the better. It's no secret that our culture objectifies women, but by facing it head-on, naming it, and recognizing it for what it is, we can find new ways to ignite change and fight for better outcomes. Caroline is a deeply inspiring guest and I personally learned so much from this conversation.. Be sure to tune in to this today and share it with the men and women you know.   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Introducing Dr. Caroline Heldman, her definition of “the sexy lie” is, and the harmful effect this has on girls and women.  [01:52] • The overlap of power, influence and impact; why women tend to shun power; and how power is regularly defined in masculine terms. [09:57] • How society (de)values women; the gains and setbacks over the past few decades. [12:44] • The appeal of self-objectification and how we mistake attention for power. [15:14] • An overview of society's deeply entrenched anti-fat bias, diet culture, and the harmful misconceptions we have when it comes to weight and size. [17:15] • How to understand power in the context of monetizing your image, reinforcing the male gaze, and the consequences for one's self and broader society as a whole. [19:11] • Sexual objectification, how it dehumanizes people, and the many harms that this causes, especially for marginalized women. [24:17] • The serious impact of porn and social media on younger generations and their understanding of sex. [30:07] • Caroline's advice on how to navigate objectification culture: recognizing to what extent you've internalized the sexy lie, reframing your outlook, and changing your habits. If there's one person who is intimately familiar with what it means to be a woman making her way in a male-dominated field, it's today's guest, Manuela Nicolosi, an Italian international soccer referee, speaker, and entrepreneur. Manuela is an undeniable trailblazer and has a series of barrier-breaking accomplishments to her name. Not only is she the first woman to referee a Men's European Final (the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea in 2019), but she is also the first Italian woman to referee the final of the Women's World Cup. In today's conversation with Manuela, we talk about her journey as a soccer referee, her love of the game, and the challenges she's faced while navigating a field dominated by men. We learn about the strict rules that governed Italian soccer when she was growing up, how this prevented women from becoming referees, and the change in regulation that took place when she was only 15, opening up new opportunities for women. Not only did this allow her to pursue her huge dream of making a name for herself in soccer, but it paved the way for her to inspire other young women to do the same through her work as a public speaker. Tuning in you'll learn about many of the skills you need to master as a top-level referee, such as being able to make quick decisions under pressure and remaining calm and balanced when players and fans are (sometimes aggressively and angrilly) challenging your decisions. We then go on to examine how these skills can translate to other leadership positions and why learning to accept your mistakes and take them in stride is such a game-changer. Today's episode is deeply inspiring and a powerful reminder of what it means to follow your dreams, no matter the odds, so be sure to tune in!   Key Highlights From This Episode: • Learing about our inspiring guest today: Manuela Nicolosi. [00:21] • Her strong relationship with her father, their shared love of soccer, why he objected to her playing professionally, and how he came to support her dream of refereeing at a high level.  [03:13] • Italy's outdated rule that only men could be referees, and the Federation's decision to open up opportunities to women. [13:56] • What Manuela has learned about how to remain focused when she makes a mistake and what this can teach us about leadership. [19:24] • The resistance and active opposition you face from players and why it's important to remain calm and firm in your decisions. Kathy Caprino is no movie critic, but her critique of the Barbie movie and the power of the patriarchy inspired us to search her out. We found someone who was once a corporate executive, but even with career success, she struggled inwardly to feel successful. Surviving sexual harassment, gender discrimination, toxic colleagues, narcissistic bosses, and zero work-life balance, she didn't feel valued or like someone making a positive contribution to the world. “Finding Brave” is an attitude that has transformed Kathy's life purpose as a career and leadership coach, writer, speaker, executive trainer, and educator dedicated to the advancement of women in business. “I want to help people, not hurt people or be hurt myself.”

In light of Taylor Swift's line, 'it's me, hi, I'm the problem it's me,' I bring you this episode! Today I share a very personal story which taught me the importance of forgiveness, empathy and taking accountability. This episode sure was uncomfortable for me to record, but if I'm asking my community to get uncomfortable, I have to do the same myself! The thing is, self development and self reflection is often uncomfortable, but this is where we make the changes that really matter.Taking accountability for our own words and actions is powerful, and by doing this ourselves, we inspire others to do the same. Living a life where we are holding on to anger and resentment is exhausting and doesn't allow us to manifest the beautiful things that the universe has waiting for us.In this episode I discuss an article I read, ‘6 Toxic Behaviours That Push People Away and How to Recognize Them in Yourself.' There are some really powerful lessons in here and I have linked the article by Kathy Caprino below.Read the article here. Pass Around the Smile Links BelowView my website here! Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Now that I'm older, I truly think about it differently. Every single rejection you get, I have learned, if you listen and observe carefully without all the defensiveness and the ego getting hysterical, it can unlock amazing doors for you.” - Kathy Caprino  Rejection, both from others and from inner selves, is a common issue faced by the many thousands of women I have heard from and worked with. This is why in this episode of Finding Brave, I talk about the different aspects of rejection and how we can handle it in a new way - one that fuels and expands our success instead of crushing it.  How you handle and feel about rejection will directly determine the degree to which you can experience growth, fulfillment and excitement on the journey to your goals. Some time ago, I posted an image with a quote about rejection on LinkedIn, and it resonated with many folks, with over 55,000 views and 1,100 likes in just a few days.   It may be hard to believe sometimes, but rejection can and will lead to amazing success if you approach it the right way. Today I share my own personal, and often painful, experiences around being rejected, and I share 5 positive lessons rejection can offer that can fuel your success, rather than demoralize you and set you back.  As always I would love to hear how this episode resonates with you, and I'd love to hear how you've overcome rejection in ways that opened door to more thrilling opportunities that you're grateful for. I know too from working with teams that new managers and high-potential managers at startups and organizations that are growing exponentially, also fear they don't know nearly enough to do their jobs well, and their confidence is lacking. This is why today I want to focus on the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn't impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future.  In this episode, I reference my recent Forbes blog post, 5 Ways Your Lack Of Confidence Is Apparent And Hurting You, which I encourage you to read. If you find the information helpful in identifying and overcoming a lack of confidence in yourself, I would be so happy if you would share the Forbes post and this episode with your teams, organizations and friends who could benefit as well.

Today is a big day. Kathy Caprino, renowned author, speaker, career, and leadership coach and Sr. Forbes contributor is with me today. Kathy and I have a lot in common when it comes to our innate desire to empower others to be their best self and show up that way every day. That is what we are unpacking today – how to be the most powerful you. I love to discuss shining, but as Kathy accurately points out, before we can shine, we have to break free of the opposite mindset. The opposite of shining is suppression or depression. From a young age, we are taught to suppress. We are raised to be fearful. Whether or not it is well-intended, this crippling mindset will leave our light dimmed and our impact impotent, all out of fear of being embarrassed or losing face. You aren't born with confidence. You gain it by doing the things you don't think you can do. As you live and learn and push beyond your perceived boundaries, your confidence grows. Often, your natural talents – those things you have always been, are the foundation for what will allow you to be fulfilled and add value to other people.  You won't get it on the first try. You have to press beyond the fear of making a mistake sot that you can recognize what makes you happy and adds the most value to others. When you can turn your mess into a message, you will find healing from limiting beliefs and find your center. You can choose who you want to be in the world. Anchor yourself to the core truth you hold dear and know that, while what you do may change, who you are remains true. It sounds simple enough – believe and do better. It takes bravery to step into who you truly are. It takes courage to look openly at what isn't working and be accountable to change it. You have the power to act as an agent of change in your own life and be the author of your own story. Find something every day that restores you and put it on your calendar. Invest in restoration. You are no good to anyone bound by stress. In parting, Kathy has a challenge for you: Right now, for the next ten minutes, take a self-assessment. Do you believe in yourself? Do you believe you are important? And that the world needs you? Now believe it more and ask yourself the following question: “If I truly believe I am important and the world needs me, what will I try next?”. Don't stop until you believe in yourself more than you did when you started. After that, take my power gap survey (listed in the resources below) and start taking practical steps toward living the true you.  Rise. Shine. Impact. Honor who you want to be.. Kathy Caprino spent 18 years in corporate life. In the beginning, she found this career path exciting and rewarding, but as Kathy approached age 40, things began to change. She felt outwardly very “successful,” but inwardly she struggled deeply... Kathy's work began to feel false and inauthentic much of the time, and work-life balance was unattainable for her. She couldn't speak up truthfully or be her true self. She got sick frequently, was exhausted and drained much of the time, and she didn't feel like her work was making positive and meaningful contributions. After a brutal layoff in the days following the events of 9/11, Kathy made a decision to reclaim her life, earning a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, becoming a therapist and eventually a “Finding Brave” expert, career and executive coach, writer, speaker, and leadership trainer dedicated to the advancement of professional women.  In this episode, I speak with Kathy Caprino about her mission and the impact she is making in the world.  Let's dive in! https://kathycaprino.com/
