In this episode, Kate and Ryan Sith dive into a critical (but often overlooked) topic in product development: losing sight of the user. They share real-world experiences of how teams can unintentionally start designing for internal stakeholders instead of external customers, how “shiny object syndrome” from leadership derails sprints, and why strong product ownership is essential. Together, they explore practical ways to reconnect teams with their users — from leveraging personas to involving real customers in reviews — and why keeping users at the center is vital for truly Agile delivery. A must-listen for anyone in product development, Agile coaching, or leadership roles!

One of the more well-known verses in the Bible is found in 2 Corinthians 5:7, which says, “for we walk by faith, not by sight.” In Numbers 13-14, we find a group of people who abandoned this biblical concept for a different philosophy. You see, they decided to walk by sight, and not by faith!…

Happy New Year! Yaki and Tati are back from the holiday break. We have a great interview with author Jsin Graham, contemporary fiction and sometimes romance author. We talk about his procss, his catalog, and how poetry led him to a life . About Jsin:Jsin Graham is a communication strategist by day, who pens unapologetically real and tactile fiction centering the Black experience by night. A writer since the age of six, he has created everything from short stories to poems to song lyrics. Graham's present focus, however, is on longer-form works that provide a broader canvas to paint the detailed narratives he enjoys composing. Since his initial release, Unacceptable Behavior: A Thirteen Story Introduction to Storytelling (2018), he has released a two-book novella series, one holiday-themed novelette, and appeared in Cleis Press' 2022 anthology, The Big Book of Orgasms, Vol. 2. The contemporary adult fiction and reluctant Black romance author presents his writing as relatable, unpredictable, sexy, and ever-changing. Just like life. In his own words, “Black people are not a monolith, and thus neither is my storytelling.” Regardless of genre, erotica, romance, or something completely different, he writes for two reasons. To tell an enjoyable story and to convince you to come back for more. When not writing, the D.C. area native spends his time reading, with his family, and collaborating with entrepreneurs creatively. There have been so many stories over the years about someone defying the odds to achieve some level of greatness in their lifetime. So many that experts have dug quite deeply in a pursuit to find the common threads that define why someone is driven to seek high-performance and uncommon results. While the research is sometimes conflicting, all can agree that a person who defies the odds has developed a range of coping skills, personality traits and supports, in home, school, and community that help them overcome adversity.Dr. Ming Wang is one such person. A poor Chinese immigrant who grew up in 1970s rural China, Dr. Wang faced persecution and despair at every turn. But with the support of his family and his own unwavering determination, somehow, some way, he found his way to America to attend Harvard and MIT. And through his research, Dr. Wang developed an innovative technology that subsequently restored sight to millions of people.Dr. Wang is the subject of a new movie from Angel Studios called ‘Sight'. Starring Oscar-nominated actor Greg Kinnear and Terry Chin, the film explores Dr. Wang's traumatic past and celebrates his ability to not only defy the odds but to go beyond his natural abilities to find solutions that would make the world a better place.Andrew Hyatt not only directed this movie but also co-wrote the script. His award-winning resume also includes films like “The Blind”, “Paul, Apostle of Christ”, and “Full of Grace”. It is Andrew's desire to inspire others to persevere and to follow their dreams.Andrew joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to talk about Dr. Wang's relentless pursuit of excellence when everything seemed to be working against him. Listen as he explains why, in our desperate need for heroes, we should look no further than to those who have dedicated their lives to helping others in humble, non-attention seeking ways.Links to CrossmapCrossmap WebsiteCrossmap Facebook
I love hearing how each jewelry artist approaches their craft and business. As someone slowly works on one piece as time and often doesn't have any idea what I'll tackle next, the idea of planning out a cohesive collection feels like… well… difficult. I've made collections before, but it's not something that comes easily. Today, I'm talking with Danielle Cadef and in my mind, she has mastered the art of building a collection. Danielle is a rather prolific jewelry artist that I've admired for a while now for her beautiful and unexpected combinations with a wide variety of materials. Now Danielle creates a large number of pieces for each collection release. Don't quote me, but the last had something like 56 or 57 pieces. Each different, but sharing a common element such as color. And while she is creating these pieces she thoughtfully drips out pictures showing how the collection is developing at different phases such as grouping materials or showing the completed metal framework for several pairs of earrings. Once again I find myself looking at another maker and wondering how they can possibly get sooo much done. Grab your beverage of choice and head on into your studio because Danielle is going to share the method to her creative madness with us. Bio... Danielle Cadef Designs is committed to the adornment of those that appreciate individualism. Each piece is created to be an extension of the wearer. Every jewelry collection utilizes recycled metals (when possible), stones, fossils, recycled gemstones and found objects, in interesting ways. Her designs are inspired by birds- their colors, textures, shapes, calls and habits; the flora and fauna of the southeastern US, and the ocean. All jewelry is handmade in her home studio in Durham, NC. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! Please note: This is a special rerun of Episode 130. “You are not your past. You are all of it, your past, present, and future. So do the work to release the shame, the humiliation, and the negative judgments you have about yourself. Release yourself.” – Kathy Caprino Over the past several years on Finding Brave, I've offered some key information about what I've observed are the 7 most damaging power and confidence gaps along with key chapters from my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. Some time back, I offered a series of 7 podcasts dedicated to these gaps that negatively impact 98% of professional women today, and 90% of men, preventing them from reaching their highest potential, and their happiest, most rewarding success and fulfillment. In this 7th installment of that series, I share the power gap that may be closest to my own heart and soul. I'm talking about how we unwittingly allow past trauma, pain and challenges that we've experienced to continue to shape and define us. And this unwanted pain and shame often brings to our lives unwanted experiences. I have lived this in such a deep way (and continue to work on it - as you'll hear in my upcoming interview, Episode #286 with Finnian Kelly - who helped me right on the show uncover a very painful trauma memory from when I was a teen, and connect that to some mindset (and behavioral) challenges I still have around money, work and safety. I never fully recognized this Power Gap (of how our past continues to shape and define us unless we gain fuller awareness of the trauma and pain events/experiences and work committedly to overcome and release them) until I became a therapist and started doing the work on myself and with others to help us heal. Unfortunately, life can hurt us badly sometimes and leave deep scars, and no one is immune. Every single one of us has experienced some form of pain, suffering, sadness, isolation, rejection, and trauma in our lifetimes. Many have experienced and witnessed things that alter how they see the world and operate within it. Sometimes, pain and hardship make us close down and stop trusting others. Other times, it makes us turn our pain into rage and violence against the world. Yet some people, while crushed by their pain for a time, are able to find a way to become more of who they really are at their core – more loving, compassionate, hopeful, helpful, generous, insightful, brave, committed, and resilient and joy-filled — through all of it. And some are fortunate to know exactly how to turn their emotional challenges into new ways to be of service in the world so they can uplift others while expanding themselves. I sincerely hope that my “The Most Powerful You” series (for content on the other 6 gaps, check out Episodes #124 through #129) is enlightening, and in conjunction with my book and video training program, can help you uncover any power and confidence gaps that may be holding you back at this very moment. Finding Purpose and Vision: A Journey through Nature As an executive and personal coach, I've had the privilege of guiding individuals through their darkest moments, witnessing firsthand the profound impact of losing sight of one's vision. In this blog post, I delve into the intricate relationship between vision, purpose, and our connection to nature, drawing from personal experiences and observations. In moments of emotional distress, it's not uncommon for individuals to reach out for guidance, often grappling with a loss of vision. Whether they've abandoned their aspirations, achieved them, or never established them in the first place, the absence of a compelling vision can leave one adrift in a sea of uncertainty. This realization, while profound, underscores the inherent human inclination to look towards the future for inspiration and direction. Reflecting on the human condition, it becomes evident that our very existence is tethered to the pursuit of future outcomes. Each action we take, consciously or unconsciously, is motivated by a desire to shape tomorrow's reality. While proponents of mindfulness advocate for living in the present moment, it's essential to acknowledge that our inherent nature propels us towards envisioning and manifesting future possibilities. Contrary to popular rhetoric advocating for living exclusively in the present moment, I contend that embracing a vision of the future is pivotal to our happiness and well-being. Personally, I've embarked on ambitious expeditions, investing significant resources and energy into realizing grandiose aspirations. However, it wasn't until I confronted the misalignment between my goals and authentic desires that I experienced true liberation. My transformative journey into the heart of the Himalayas serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of aligning our actions with our intrinsic vision. Despite meticulously planning a high-stakes expedition, I found myself paralyzed by the realization that I was merely emulating someone else's journey. It was a humbling experience, one that shattered my ego and compelled me to reassess my priorities. In our relentless pursuit of success and fulfillment, it's easy to overlook the profound wisdom that nature imparts. Throughout history, visionaries like Buddha and Jesus found solace and clarity in the tranquility of natural surroundings. Today, amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, reconnecting with nature emerges as a potent antidote to lost vision and existential despair. As we navigate life's tumultuous terrain, we must carve out moments of introspection and communion with nature. Whether it's a leisurely stroll in the park or a challenging trek through rugged landscapes, immersing ourselves in the splendor of the natural world awakens dormant visions and ignites our sense of purpose. By embracing the power of future vision and anchoring ourselves in the present moment, we can chart a course towards fulfillment and inner harmony. In conclusion, let us heed the call to reconnect with nature, rediscover our vision, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation. For it is in the embrace of nature's majesty that we find solace, inspiration, and the courage to pursue our most audacious dreams. Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 John Horgan is a journalist and author who has written books on quantum physics, consciousness, war, sex, attention, and mysticism. He was a columnist for Scientific American for 11 years, until they fired him for his 1995 book, The End of Science. In it, Horgan argues that increases in human knowledge have reached an asymptotic phase of marginal improvements, and the future of science is going to look a whole lot like the present. Twenty five years after publication, Horgan's certainty about the fate of science has started to waver. Quantum physics doesn't totally fit together, the JWST keeps finding things that don't make any sense, and our sense of what makes a biological organism is getting constantly blown apart. In our conversation, we go through what Horgan saw that made him so confident that we were almost at the end, how the landscape has changed since the mid nineties, the areas of science that seem most likely to open a whole new world of study for generations to come, and ideas that probably aren't going anywhere, but maybe should. Here are the takeaways... A mission statement guides your actions, how you spend money or time Your soul's mission is your purpose, the thing that really lights you up. Signs of living congruent to one's soul's mission are ease and abundance, time disappearing, the work doesn't feel like work and you'd do it for free, and it feels so fun to think about the mission of your soul. Signs you might be out of alignment include worrying, feeling stuck, experiencing decision fatigue or seeking comfort. You might have the sensation you know there is something more for you. You might be questioning things and have an exhaustion sleep can't help. The number one way to make sure you are aligned with your soul's mission is to shift the energy.
