This episode is the first in a four-part series on the history of modern Iran, from 1906 through the present. This episode covers the period from 1906 until 1941, from the Constitutional Revolution that imposed constitutional limits on the Qajar dynasty through the 1921 coup that brought to power Reza Khan—who then in 1925 deposed the Qajars and became Reza Shah, the first shah of the Pahlavi dynasty. We end just before the 1941 occupation of Iran by longtime imperial powers, Britain and the Soviet Union, which forced Reza Shah out and replaced him with his son, Muhammad Reza Shah—which is where we will pick up in episode two.RIP Mike Davis. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution upended the political order of the Middle East, sweeping from power the country's pro-American monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The forces that coalesced to ouster the Shah from power were broad, including not only religious conservatives, but liberal, socialists, communists, and national minorities. However, it was the country's religious establishment, under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini, that were ultimately able to take power and establish an “Islamic Republic”.   This week on This Is Revolution we take a deep divide into the Iranian Revolution and its aftermath. What were its origins? Which political forces contested for power during the revolution and how has that contest played out in the post-revolutionary era? And in what ways has Iran's continuous relationship with the United States affected political developments over the last four decades.   About Eskandar Sadeghi-Boroujerdi: Eskandar Sadeghi-Boroujerdi is an Assistant Professor in Comparative Political Theory at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.21.079152v1?rss=1 Authors: Dickey, C. W., Sargsyan, A., Madsen, J. R., Eskandar, E. N., Cash, S. S., Halgren, E. Abstract: Sleep spindles facilitate memory consolidation in the cortex during mammalian non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. In rodents, phase-locked firing during spindles may facilitate spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) by grouping pre- and post-synaptic cell firing within ~25ms. Currently, microphysiological evidence in humans for conditions conducive for STDP during spindles is absent. We analyzed local field potentials and supragranular unit spiking during spindles from 10x10 arrays of microelectrodes at 400{micro}m pitch in humans. We found strong tonic and phase-locked increases in firing and co-firing within 25ms during spindles. Co-firing, spindle co-occurrence, and spindle coherence were greatest between sites within ~2mm, and high co-firing of units on different electrodes was largely restricted to moments of high spindle coherence between those electrodes. Spindles propagated at ~0.23m/s in distinct patterns, with correlated cell co-firing sequences. These results suggest that spindles may organize spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal co-firing which promote memory consolidation during NREM sleep. Copy rights belong to original authors.
