Is there collusion in our field? Do we have elites running wild, making sure that their work gets published whilst the rest of us struggles to find room to publish our own work? And are we handling conflicts of interest that may exist between authors and the editors who are charged with making decisions about their work? These are serious questions. They target the core of our field, they have the potential to undermine – or bolster – the legitimacy of all our scholarship, and they pose serious material consequences for all scholars, their careers and ultimately their lives. We came across a new paper that reports an analysis of the potential conflict of interest issues in academic publishing, and we use this paper to reflect on our experiences as both authors and editors. We try to draw a few conclusions and recommendations about how we can raise awareness and build institutional trust to minimize if not avoid any questionable or outright unethical practices in publishing. Terrifyingly, an estimated 1.7 million people are stalked each year in the United States. Just this past Friday March 10th, Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, a tech industry podcaster and her husband, Mohammad Milad Naseri, 35, were murdered in their home in Redmond, Washington by a man who stalked Zohreh after listening to her podcast. In the past months, his behavior had become increasingly alarming, relentlessly calling her 100 times in a day, sending her an avalanche of texts, traveling from his residence in Texas to her home in Washington state, surveying her neighborhood and threatening to harm her or himself unless she entered an intimate relationship with him. Despite Zohreh contacting police and obtaining a restraining order against him, despite his increasingly threatening behavior, police were not willing or seemed able to do anything to intervene. Why? Why are victims not protected? Why are stalkers, who are not going to be stopped by a piece of paper, allowed free reign to terrorize and murder? Do you think you are being stalked? What can you do? Welcome to another episode of the Plant Based News podcast, where I am joined today by the President and CEO of the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine gastroenterologist Dr. Angie Sadeghi. Based in California, Dr. Sadeghi is an expert in the digestive system and a passionate vegan advocate. She is committed to helping people through an integrative approach that helps them lead healthier and longer lives. Dr. Angie's personal journey is what has inspired her to help patients stay fit and healthy through nutrition and fitness. She had previously suffered from health problems such as severe eczema, elevated cholesterol, fatigue, and was overweight. After being vegetarian for several years, in 2014 she switched to a whole-food plant-based diet and adopted regular fitness into her lifestyle. This proved to be transformative for her, restoring her health and improving her physical fitness in a short span of time. She lost 30lbs of weight in 8 months and even gained the confidence to enter into a fitness competition. Today Dr. Angie heads the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine whose mission is to treat, prevent, and reverse disease using a multi-speciality approach combining plant-based nutrition with evidence-based medicine. She continues her work of treating her patients and educating fellow physicians and healthcare professionals on the positive impact of evidence based nutrition on health and disease.
