Este mes marca una década desde que el autodenominado Estado Islámico (EI) se apoderó de Mosul, una de las metrópolis más importantes de Irak, ubicada en el norte del país. La captura de Mosul, recuperada en 2017, permitió al grupo yihadista consolidar su poder y declarar un califato, abarcando vastos territorios de Irak y Siria, regidos por la ley sharia, una estricta interpretación del islam. En esta edición de El Debate, revivimos lo que sucedió hace una década y analizamos el impacto del EI desde entonces. Hace 10 años, el grupo yihadista conocido como Estado Islámico tomó la ciudad de Mosul, estableciendo allí el centro de su califato. Este nuevo estado, que incluía territorios en Irak y Siria, se basaba en la imposición de la ley sharia, una estricta interpretación del islam. La captura de Mosul obligó a más de 800.000 personas a desplazarse, según datos de la ONU, generando una crisis humanitaria de enormes proporciones. En octubre de 2016, una coalición liderada por Estados Unidos inició una operación para reconquistar Mosul. En esta operación participaron el Ejército de Irak, milicias kurdas y chiitas, así como tribus árabes sunitas. En enero de 2017, la coalición tomó el control del este de Mosul, situado al este del río Tigris. El Estado Islámico se refugió en el lado oeste de la ciudad, concretamente en la Ciudad Vieja, donde se libraron los combates más intensos y se produjo la mayor destrucción tanto de infraestructura como de vidas humanas. El 10 de julio de 2017, el entonces primer ministro iraquí, Haider al-Abadi, declaró la recuperación total de Mosul por parte de los ejércitos aliados. Sin embargo, la ciudad aún muestra cicatrices de la devastación. La antigua Gran Mezquita de Al-Nuri, símbolo de la ciudad, todavía no ha sido reconstruida y las minorías religiosas siguen enfrentando persecuciones. Diez años después de la captura de Mosul, el Estado Islámico no ha desaparecido, sino que se ha descentralizado. El grupo ha perdido gran parte de su territorio, pero sigue siendo una amenaza en la región y ha adaptado sus tácticas para continuar su lucha. ¿Qué ha pasado con el Estado Islámico 10 años después de la captura de Mosul? ¿Cuál fue el costo del intento del califato y de la batalla por reconquistar la ciudad iraquí? Born in the former Yugoslavia, Hani is a Bay Area-based alternative singer-songwriter, musician, and longtime bassist of the metal band Bilocate. On 11/30/23, he dropped his debut solo album Tiamat, which takes listeners on an acoustic trip that covers topics such as death, love, loss, and the emotions that come with the human experience. Alongside the musical release for Tiamat, Hani has also released numerous lyric videos and music videos on YouTube from the album. Among those are a claymation music video for the song "My Story," which tackles the journey of a broken heart, as well as an AI-driven music video for the song "Dementia." The latter is Hani's tribute to his late grandfather, who suffered from the disease. In this conversation, Hani speaks with Mike about his early interest in metal music and Metallica, the satanic labels and forbidden nature that came with being in a metal band in the Middle East at that time, relocating to the Bay Area in the states not long before the COVID pandemic, tackling death and paying homage to his lost loved ones on Tiamat, using his music to process pain, and more.
