On this episode of On the Nose—recorded live at Jewish Currents's daylong event on September 15th—editor-in-chief Arielle Angel speaks with a panel of authors, scholars, and activists about the movement for Palestinian freedom in the wake of Israel's genocide. Noura Erakat, Fadi Quran, Dana El Kurd, Amjad Iraqi, and Ahmed Moor discuss the challenge of Palestinian unity under Israel's program of fragmentation, the resurgence of the two-state solution and decline of the coexistence paradigm, American Jews' role in organizing their communities against Zionism, and the task of imagining a liberated future. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).Texts Mentioned and Further Reading:Polarized and Demobilized: Legacies of Authoritarianism in Palestine by Dana El KurdJustice for Some: Law and the Question of Palestine by Noura ErakatAfter Zionism: One State for Israel and Palestine, edited by Anthony Loewenstein and Ahmed MoorHamas Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance by Tareq BaconiPolling by Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research“Zionism Killed the Jewish-Muslim World,” Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, JacobinProtocol I Additional to the Geneva Conventions1968 Palestinian National Charter“How Durham, North Carolina, became the first US city to ban police exchanges with Israel,” Zaina Alsous and Sammy Hanf, Scalawag
The killing of the beloved Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/24/middleeast/shireen-abu-akleh-jenin-killing-investigation-cmd-intl/index.html (shot by Israeli forces) while covering an IDF raid of occupied Jenin on May 11th, has sparked massive outcry in Palestine and widespread condemnation from the international community—as did the subsequent attack on her funeral procession by Israeli police. Though Abu Akleh, a veteran correspondent for Al Jazeera, was a singular figure, her death is only the latest reminder that Israel has routinely targeted journalists and civilians, sustaining its impunity through obfuscation in the media and the routine dehumanization of Palestinians. Jewish Currents fellow Dylan Saba speaks with political scientist Dana El Kurd and activist Fadi Quran about Israeli media strategy, shifting public opinion outside the region, and the discursive and strategic challenges faced by the Palestine solidarity movement. Is violence the only effective form of resistance?Fadi Quran grew up under Israeli occupation dreaming of ways to resist the tanks and soldiers he saw around him. But on a pilgrimage to India, tracing the steps of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr's own journey there, he encountered the radical vision of nonviolence that has since changed his life.Today, he is a nonviolent Palestinian activist who weds a deep commitment to truth with a deep care for humanity. His activism not only disrupts the status quo, but is rooted in a love that actually transforms his “enemies.” In a world that says violence is the only effective means to achieve our ends, Fadi demonstrates that there's another way possible, a way that upholds the dignity of all.Read and share the Principles and Practices of PeacemakingSubscribe to the Telos Newsletter for more news analysis and peacemaking resources: http://eepurl.com/cG1LGHFollow Telos on Instagram @thetelosgroupIf you're enjoying the podcast, become a monthly donor to Telos!Resources:Follow Fadi Quran on Twitter

The past months have been tumultuous in the occupied West Bank. In April, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas cancelled parliamentary and presidential elections; in May, during protests following Israel's assault on Gaza, Israeli soldiers killed dozens of Palestinians; in June, Palestinian Authority security forces killed Nizar Banat, a vocal critic of Abbas, setting off protests against the PA leader. To explore some of the recent developments in the region as well as their broader political context, Senior Reporter Alex Kane speaks with Jewish Currents contributor Dalia Hatuqa and activist and analyst Fadi Quran. Articles Mentioned: “https://jewishcurrents.org/a-prison-break-liberates-the-palestinian-political-imagination (A Prison Break Liberates the Palestinian Political Imagination)” by Dalia Hatuqa “https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-jerusalem-israel-mahmoud-abbas-hamas-5a716da863a603ab5f117548ea85379d (Poll finds nearly 80% of Palestinians want Abbas to resign)” by Joseph Krauss Thanks to Santiago Helou Quintero for producing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”
Last week, a Palestinian political activist, Nizar Banat, was arrested by the Palestinian Authority and died soon after in their custody. His family accuses the PA of murdering him. Following his death, Palestinians in the West Bank gathered for protests, and the PA responded with violence and repression. According to the Palestinian human rights organization Al Haq, PA security forces - both in uniform and dressed as civilians - attacked protesters with batons and tear gas, attacked several journalists, and attacked human rights researchers who were monitoring the protests and confiscated their phones. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, Peter Beinart interviews political organizer and activist Fadi Quran about why Palestinians are rising up against the Palestinian Authority. This episode focuses on issues of identity, extremism, and violence, and the role that technology plays in societies in conflict. First up, we speak to Hakeem Jefferson, a political scientist at Stanford University. Jefferson describes the underlying grievance driving the right in the United States- white supremacy- and how it combined with demagoguery, disinformation, and the ability to organize at scale on social media to produce the violent assault on the Capitol on January 6th. Then, we speak to Fadi Quran, campaigns director at Avaaz, a social movement that empowers people to take action on issues from corruption and poverty to conflict and climate change. He describes the role of social media in the recent flare up of violence between Israel and Palestine, and what social platforms and governments should do to protect democracy.
Is it worthwhile to focus our organizing on moving Jewish American public opinion on Israel/Palestine? How effective is it really in shifting the dynamics on the ground? Jewish Currents staff members discuss these questions. Then, starting at 33:58, we discuss one of the main questions we've received in the last week: How do I talk to my family about what's happening? We recount personal victories and failures, and explore how people actually change their mind. The year 2021 looks to be a big one for the status of Palestine and of Palestinians. We have the end of Trump and his Middle East envoys that cut Palestinians out of talks, and a new Biden foreign policy doctrine that so far seems more malleable to Palestinian concerns, if only on paper. To help get a grip of how all these changes will affect Palestinians, I'll be speaking today with Fadi Quran, a prominent Palestinian activist.
The topic today is Israeli settlements, with our focus on Psagot -- a settlement located deep inside the West Bank that according to news reports will enjoy a history-making visit soon from US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. To discuss this visit and Psagot settlement, this episode features Dror Etkes, settlement expert and founder of the organization Kerem Navot, together with Fadi Quran, Campaigns Director at Avaaz, whose family's land was confiscated for Psagot, and Lara Friedman, President of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Facebook has taken a public stance against bogus health claims that discourage people from taking proper precautions against the virus. The company even gave the World Health Organization free advertising to help fight misinformation. But research from Avaaz, a global non-profit that works to protect democracies from disinformation on social media, shows that global health misinformation accumulated an estimated 3.8 billion views on Facebook in the past year. The conspiracies circulating on Facebook can be fatal — some of them suggest ingesting poisonous substances, while others tell people not to wear masks or to shun vaccines. In this podcast extra, Bob talks to Fadi Quran, campaign director at Avaaz, about the "superspreader" pages that are amassing these page views, the most popular health conspiracies on Facebook, and whether there's any hope that Facebook will address the proliferation of disinformation on its site.
The sound of bullies on social media can be deafening, but what about their victims? “They're just sitting there being pummeled and pummeled and pummeled,” says Fadi Quran. As the campaign director of Avaaz, a platform for 62 million activists worldwide, Fadi and his team go to great lengths to figure out exactly how social media is being weaponized against vulnerable communities, including those who have no voice online at all. “They can't report it. They’re not online.” Fadi says. “They can't even have a conversation about it.” But by bringing these voices of survivors to Silicon Valley, Fadi says, tech companies can not just hear the lethal consequences of algorithmic abuse, they can start hacking away at a system that Fadi argues was “designed for bullies.”
On today’s show… John Nichols, from The Nation Magazine, will explain why ceding too much authority to the Executive Branch has led to an Imperial Presidency. Fadi Quran, from Avaaz, joins us to discuss how Facebook and other social media platforms have become the epicenter for misinformation, and how we can solve the issue. My own doctor, David LeMay, will be here to discuss why overall health is such an important factor in the battle against Covid-19. And Heather "Digby" Parton will help me figure out another crazy news week.
