Understanding opposition research in the digital era

This week, host Tim Boyum takes us inside the world of political opposition research. We've all seen the ads, heard about salacious accusations or ready stories about political candidates. And most of that comes from what's known as opposition research.  He talks with two North Carolinians involved in some of the more famous opposition research cases in recent times. Republican Charles Hellwig helped dig up information on 2020 U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham, and David Wheeler discovered and released several things about 2022 candidate and U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn.  Both candidates ended up losing. The two argue opposition research is vital for a campaign and not some dark room operation.

The sad outcome of the push to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour tells us two things. First, there is a big house cleaning needed to make way for politicians who actually care about workers. Second, no matter what happens in elections, we need to keep up the street heat to mobilize millions of people to stop the immorality of people working full-time but getting paid poverty wages while billionaires get even richer. First up, then, is Precious Cole. Precious lives in Durham, North Carolina and works at Wendy’s. She has been working minimum wage jobs for half her life and, like millions of other workers, has, year after year, not been able to meet her monthly bills earning what is a poverty wage. Which is one reason Precious has become a key activist and leader in North Carolina Raise Up, the state branch of the national Fight for 15 and a Union network. She chats with me about her life and her activism. Then, you may remember state Senator Erica Smith—she was a progressive who jumped into the 2020 North Carolina race for the U.S. Senate to challenge incumbent Republican Thom Tillis. But, the D.C. insiders shoved her aside, handpicking the most uninspired, dumb-as-a-brick candidate Cal Cunningham who, with piles of corporate and party-directed money, won the primary—and, then, proceeded to crash and burn, handing Tillis his re-election. The 2022 election is a barometer for whether lessons have been learned. As the results of the Florida minimum wage ballot initiative showed—it passed overwhelmingly even as Joe Biden was losing the state—people are saying pretty clearly: give me a policy that puts money in my pocket and isn’t about supporting the rich over regular people, and I’ll vote for it whether you call it “progressive” or “a loaf of bread.” Erica is back for another Senate race, competing for the party primary nod for the seat that is opening up in 2022 with the retirement of Richard Burr. I talk with her about her campaign and the mood in North Carolina. -- Jonathan Tasini Follow me on Twitter @jonathantasini Subscribe to the YouTube show, Working Life at: https://www.youtube.com/WorkingLifewithJonathanTasini Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.tasini.3

I want to discuss what is on the table for American-conservatism heading into tomorrow's election. Sure, we all know that this nation cannot be led by liberals like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and the socialist puppet masters pulling strings from behind the scenes. That's right, what the DNC doesn't want the American people to know is that under a Biden Administration, Bolshevic Bernie Sanders will be over policy, Elizabeth Warren will be over education. AOC and Beto O'Rourke will be instrumental in creating domestic policy, including the most restrictive measures in gun rights and energy. Just imagine the lunacy on display during the Democratic nomination process - a literal-liberal "Who's Who" of communistic thought. The thoughts and actions of free this and free will become a reality should Biden defeat Trump - and guess who will be on the hook for all of this? That's right, you, me, and every other working American! Democrats in this country have a plan, ladies and gentlemen. The goal is this - destroy our democratic republic and make every living and breathing American wholly dependent on the government for everything! We all need to be aware of what is on the liberal-agenda. From healthcare to energy, packing the court to the domestic and international policies that will weaken our nation here and abroad, today's liberals have a master plan - and defeating Trump is just the beginning. Biden's campaign manager has already stated that under no circumstances will Trump win - what does that tell you? What that should tell you is that the Democrats will not ever concede - and that they have a far more sinister plan in place to guarantee that under no circumstances will Trump lead this nation again. Why else do you think that the left was against ABC to the Supreme Court? I want all of you listening to know that the fight, this fight, exceeds far broader reaches than just who occupies the Oval after Tuesday. Yes, reelecting Donald Trump again as President is vital; however, we must ensure that Republicans maintain control of the United States Senate. And that is the fight that our nation cannot afford to lose. Across this nation, local, state, and federal offices are up for grabs - none more crucial than for the U.S. Senate. Those offices against incumbent and Republican leaders such as S.C. Sen. Lindsay Graham, M.E. Sen. Susan Collins, and N.C. Sen. Thom Tillis cannot be afforded the liberal-cause. South Carolina Democrat Jaime Harrison has shattered congressional fundraising records, bringing in $57 million in the final quarter for his U.S. Senate campaign against Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham. Ladies and gentlemen, this should be an eye-opener to you - the left in this country want to ensure that they unseat Republican leadership, especially those like Sen. Graham, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. There are a little over 5 million people that live in the state of S.C. If you equate the 57 million dollars that the DNC and their left-winged financers have pushed into that state to upset Graham, the citizens of S.C. could have received $11,000 each - not per family, instead, each citizen, man, woman, and child in the state of S.C. Do not for one second believe that Democrats are against big money and its influence. Here in North Carolina, Senate candidate Cal Cunningham is still being endorsed by the left - no mind that he was caught and has since refused to answer questions about cheating on his wife with various women, including military personnel wives. Cunningham, an enlisted officer himself, prided himself and his campaign on honesty and trust - a man of family values. But now, the story got yet again buried by the left-wing media, because for them, a philandering, dishonest, and cheating punk like Cunningham is acceptable - and the loss is the people of my state of North Carolina. For Democrats, and those who voted for someone like Cunningham, their vote means nothing - for all of the crap they blasted Trump on, means nothing. The real question is this, where do you see yourself and this country in 48-hours? The left has made their anti-liberty list well-known - in fact, they have not attempted to hide it anyway, shape, or form. Like sheep to the slaughter, many in this nation have taken the bait - bought into the Bolschivism blunders that killed every country before them. The left is scared, ladies and gentlemen. If you haven't read the reports, the U.S. Secret Service, under President Trump's direction, erected a non-scalable fence in front of The White House ahead of today's election. Do you think this is to keep Trump supporters from scaling the wall to protest his reelection? No, no, it is because when every vote is counted, and undeniable proof develops that America is no in favor of the Democratic Party-direction, the left's approach will burn everything to the ground. Unfortunately, in liberal-led cities and towns, lives will be lost. And why? Because the left does not care about freedom - they do not care for law and order. Instead, they care about one thing - anything against Donald Trump and those who support them. Progressive thought was built to push our nation into the past tense - that is what they want - and they will stop at nothing to get it. But luckily for you, for me, and everyone in this country that doesn't have a voice or had their's stolen at the hands of socialistic-thought and action, you have me, and you have those people who never failed, never wavered, and have cast their vote for continued liberty. Biden Bit the Big One During Debate

The Closet Conservative Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2020 8:53

Joe Biden did a masterful job during Thursday's debate - if you consider outright lying to the millions of Americans a job well done. Thursday's debate was moderator by liberal NBC newscast member Kristen Welker for anyone who may have missed it. Like her liberal friends before her, she made it her mission to show her favoritism and continually attempted to interrupt Trump - 111 times in fact, compared to only 22 of Joe Biden. But we all are used to the blatant disregard of journalistic favoritism against our nation's president and for Ole' Joe over the last year. You could almost see Kristen Welker running interference when Biden was nearing a stumbling block. But, no matter how hard Welker tried, she couldn't stop Biden from dooming himself in all of his Democratic defamation - his past and present actions have finally come to roost. The question is, will Americans care and pay attention? What's more, is all of this information and recent revelations concerning Biden and the millions he made off his son Hunter and the backs of foreign companies too little, too late? After all, nearly 45 million people, more than one-third of voters, have already cast their ballots for the 2020 election. Which brings me to this point - I hate early voting. And why? Because a lot can happen in a month - in any election. Take, for example, in my home state of North Carolina, where Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Cal Cunningham, has been outed for having numerous extra-marital affairs, including with one woman who is married to a fellow American serviceman. Since the story broke, Cunningham has since apologized, briefly and only once, and has never mentioned or answered any additional questions concerning the matter. This information concerning Cal was revealed just as early voting got underway. The same for Joe Biden, who has evidence against him that proves that he, his son, and other family members have profited richly with off-shore business dealings while the Old Man was serving under Obama as Vice President. Of course, like clockwork, the liberal mainstream media has refused to give any airtime to this story - and when they do, they and like Biden did on Thursday, continually claim that this is nothing more than more Russian meddling in our election process. I don't know about you - but I have heard this Russian hoax story enough that my son's grandchildren will feel my pain. I'm beginning to think that Russian and global warming is the reason for all of the wrongs in this world. That is, of course, if you ask the Democrats. So, what were some of Biden's blatant lies on Thursday? Well, for starters, he claimed that no one lost their insurance under Obamacare. Well, of course, they did - in fact, millions of Americans did. In my home state of North Carolina, Obamacare drove out competition within the country and left only Obamacare and Blue Cross and Blue Shield as the only two policy providers available to the Tar Heel State people. For me and thousands of others in my state, on December 31, 2017, you lost your right to choose - to seek alternatives in a competitive market for healthcare freely. That is what Joe Biden looks to bring about again for all Americans if elected. During the debate, President Trump said that Biden is for socialistic healthcare - Democratically described and designed as a "public option." Folks, that government healthcare, that is communist assistance - and a mandate that will leave millions uninsured or underinsured - will most assuredly remove them from a policy they like and a doctor they love. Stop me if you've heard this one before. "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor … ." But Joe Biden did elude, among all of his pathetic political bumblings when he said, "People deserve to have affordable health care. Period. Period. Period. It's going to cost some money." What he conveniently leaves out is just how much money will it cost? Ladies and gentlemen, we don't know because he doesn't know. NASA and SpaceX haven't invented calculators that can compute such a figure. As the old saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Another lie told by liberal Joe was that he never said he would get rid of fracking. There are at least half a dozen recordings and televised interviews whereby Joe says he will end fracking, and in turn, declare war against the oil and gas industries, putting millions and millions of Americans out of work to be replaced by The Green New Deal that he doesn't support, but promotes on his website. But the biggest lie of all was when he stated that he has never taken a dime from another country. Well, of course, he has! That's why Hunter told his daughter he had to kick back 50% to "the Big Guy." Unless, of course, he isn't the "Big Guy." All this is going down the tubes because Hunter couldn't be bothered to pay $85 to the laptop-repair store. Under a Biden Administration, our nation will be weaker, our economy will be in ruins, and our citizens will forever be indebted and dependent on the government for everyday life. Joe Biden has done nothing in 47 years in office - why would we give him another 4? Music courtesy of Greg Shields Music. http://www.reverbnation.com/GregShields

In campus news, App State ran out of COVID-19 tests over the weekend. The Appalachian reported that at Saturday's pop-up testing event, Mako Medical, the company that performs the tests, tested 900 people, a record, before running out of tests. This comes after the school reported seven new clusters, 19 more cases connected to App State football, and campus's first student death due to COVID-19 last week. The laboratory is back on campus today from 11 a.m. til 5 p.m. in the Rivers Street Parking Deck. In state news, North Carolina's race for senate took turns this weekend. The Appalachian reported Friday evening that Republican senator Thom Tillis tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Hours later, Tillis's opponent, Cal Cunningham, admitted that he had sent texts of a sexual nature to a woman from California who is not his wife. The Appalachian reported that Cunningham says he isn't dropping out of the race. In a statement, he said, “I will continue to work to earn the opportunity to fight for the people of our state.” In national news, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced Monday that she has tested positive for the coronavirus. CNN reported that McEnany announced her diagnosis in a tweet and said she had tested negative consistently since Thursday. McEnany is one of several White Housers to test positive for the virus this week. President Donald Trump, advisor Hope Hicks, and counselor Kellyanne Conway are a few who have tested positive so far.

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) October 1, rabbit, rabbit to you, and may we meet this month’s surprises with grit and determination. David Waldman and Greg Dworkin bring us a whole lot of the latest: Donald Trump was a bullying jerk in Tuesday’s debate, surprising no one, except perhaps his debate crew, who still long for the cheerfully bullying jerk they remember from 2016. Trump plotted to trigger Joe Biden’s stutter in the last debate and will only increase his efforts in the future. The next debate in 6 days will be a “town hall” style and they will be muting Donald’s microphone, so expect the miming to be at Phillie Phanatic levels behind Joe. ACA and naked overt racism remain on the ballot this month, along with Trump’s calls for voter intimidation. Pennsylvania for one, won’t let him get away with it. A Pro-Trump faux-militia gang has recruited thousands of police, soldiers, and veterans to raise hell. It’s tough out there for Republicans. Thom Tillis is to debate Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham tonight. Ted Cruz gave Thom a knife to the ribs for luck. Obamacare support has hit a record high,  and Chuck Schumer will force a vote on one-line legislation barring the Justice Department from seeking the invalidation of any part of the Affordable Care Act. If the election, the Electoral College, and the Supreme Court don’t give Donald Trump the presidency could he try something even more lame-brained and underhanded? Sure! The Supreme Court has become so unbearable that even Democrats are considering the unthinkable. The court’s influence can be scaled back… or maybe we can just ignore their “opinions”, man. Wilbur Ross plans to change the course of US government for a decade, and a Federal judge suggests that she may do something about it. Brad Parscale might sing himself into a more assisted form of self-endangerment. The $300 million taxpayer-funded “Cheer up, it’s only a pandemic” ad campaign/boondoggle managed to attract only Dennis Quaid, CeCe Winans and Hasidic singer Shulem Lemmer... and by this point Dennis is beginning to consider this as more of a “Randy” vehicle. Turkey lowers its COVID-19 numbers, by lowering its COVID-19 numbers. In the US, Covid has killed 1 out of 1,000 Black Americans and 1 out of 1,500 Floridians. You’ll never hear that from Donald Trump. The Agriculture Department mandates that each of the millions of boxes of surplus food also contain a thank you note to Donald Trump.

The most recent polls show Vice President Joe Biden ahead of President Donald Trump by about two points. And, only one Democrat running for president has been able to build a winning coalition in the state in the last 10 elections, and that was Barack Obama in 2008. North Carolina is significant for another reason, it is one of a handful of states with two other top offices on the ballot; Governor, Roy Cooper, a Democrat is up for reelection as is US Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican. The race for Senate is of national prominence, Republicans are fighting to hold onto the seat and Democrats are hoping a win here puts them on the path back to majority control. Cal Cunningham, the Democrat who is challenging Tillis tells us why he thinks he’s the right choice for North Carolinians.

U.S Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer purportedly imagined a Democrat would have to lock himself in a "windowless basement" and fundraise nonstop to beat incumbent GOP Sen. Thom Tillis in North Carolina. But, Cal Cunningham's campaign office has plenty of natural light.

North Carolina’s 2020 U.S. Senate race picked up two more candidates in recent weeks. Cal Cunningham, a former state senator, dropped his campaign for lieutenant governor to make a second bid for the upper chamber on Capitol Hill. Another former state senator, Eric Mansfield, also added his name to the list of Democrats who want to challenge incumbent Republican Thom Tillis. Rick Henderson, Carolina Journal editor-in-chief, analyzes the latest developments in the high-profile race. The certificate of need represents one way government steps in to restrict health care innovation. Josh Windham, attorney at the Institute for Justice, explains why IJ is challenging North Carolina’s CON law and a similar restriction of health care freedom in South Carolina. Windham says these types of restrictions crop up in other states as well. Some N.C. lawmakers are pushing Allison’s Law. Based on the 2009 murder of Allison Holt in Forsyth County, the measure would enable new tracking of violent domestic abuse offenders. You’ll hear highlights from legislative debate of the issue. A recent report from the General Assembly’s Program Evaluation Division gave lawmakers ideas for boosting student achievement in North Carolina’s most challenging public school districts. You’ll hear report details and reaction from lawmakers on both sides of the partisan divide. Unanimous votes in both the N.C. House and Senate killed off North Carolina’s infamous Map Act. Jon Guze, John Locke Foundation director of legal studies, explains why the end of the Map Act represents a win for property rights.
