Two time Texas Senate candidate, and friend of the show, Sema Hernandez joins us to discuss the reality of ballot access and viable alternatives to the one party system. Spoiler alert: I sound like a crazy person. Ms. Hernandez has run for the Texas Democratic nomination for the Senate in 2018 and 2020. In 2018, she garnered nearly 300,000 votes on a budget of $4,000 against Robert “Beto” Francis O'Rourke. His budget was over $4 million, barely doubling the votes Hernandez received. The 2020 race was an even bigger corporate grease fire as the DNC rounded up 11 candidates to crowd the field before confused voters settled on MJ Hegar. She went on to lose to Ted Cruz. Only 15 more days until Election Day, and early voting is going on now through October 30!  Just over 2 weeks to impact this election.TODAY'S ACTION:Texas is experiencing record voter turnout during early voting, but we're a little concerned that our most progressive counties are not at the very top of the list when it comes to percentage turnout compared to 2016. For Texas to flip, we need to have massive turnout in our blue-est counties -- Travis and Harris. People who aren't confident voters have a lot of questions and need extra info to actually get them to the polls. The way they get that info? Volunteers call them, text them, or put handouts on their doors. We need to be those volunteers! The best way we've found to make ourselves follow through with volunteering is to get a democracy buddy to hold us accountable. Find your democracy buddy and sign up together to volunteer with your local county Democratic party -- they will have the best ways to plug you in where you live. Just Google your county's name and "Democratic party." Or message us @therabbletx if you need help!More on turnout in Texas.Whatcha doin' Wednesday night? After the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on September 18th and nomination of Amy Coney Barrett just a week later on September 26th, there’s been a lot of speculation about the political implications of a Supreme Court fight just days before Election Day. Democrats have seen a boon in fundraising with Jaime Harrison, the Democrat running against Republican Judiciary Chair Lindsey Graham, pulling in millions in the days after Ginsburg’s death. Graham himself, as well as several other vulnerable Republican senators, are hoping that the confirmation of a conservative to the court will help boost GOP enthusiasm and turnout. As the hearing wrapped up on Thursday, it was clear that Barrett had made it through the process unscathed. A vote is expected on October 22nd in the Judiciary Committee and by the full Senate at the end of the month. We spoke about this with Sahil Kapur, national political reporter for NBC News, and Jessica Taylor of The Cook Political Report.  Also on the show, a look at the political landscape in Texas going into the 2020 election. For years now, Democrats have been predicting they can turn this red state blue. But the last time a Democratic presidential candidate actually won the state was in 1976.  However, Texas is changing. A diverse electorate, combined with a backlash to Trump in traditionally Republican suburbs has given Democrats serious political traction. The latest polls show President Trump leading Joe Biden by an average of just two points. We got an overview of what’s happening in Texas from Abby Livingston, D.C. Bureau Chief at the Texas Tribune. There’s also a Senate race in the state this year. In 2018, a Texas Senate race was the center of the political universe. Then, Democratic Representative Beto O’Rourke raised millions of dollars and gained national attention for his race against Senator Ted Cruz. O’Rourke came up short, but his impressive showing gave him enough momentum and fame to mount a presidential run—albeit a short-lived run. Two years later, another Republican Senator, John Cornyn is up for re-election in Texas. We spoke to his opponent, MJ Hegar, the Democratic Senate candidate and U.S. Air Force veteran, about her race against the three-term incumbent. Her campaign brought in $13.5 million in the third quarter and she’s been outspending Cornyn in TV ads over the past few weeks. But even though the race is tightening, polls show Cornyn is still ahead by over seven percentage points.  We also took a look at the Latino vote in Texas with Jason Casellas, an associate professor of political science at the University of Houston. According to recent estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Latino population in Texas grew by two million over the last decade, and it’s on track to become the state’s largest demographic group in 2021.

My friend recently told me, “Only teenagers like horror movies. When we get older, we start to see how scary the real world is.” Isn’t that the truth? I’m going to be honest with y’all. Sometimes I’ve just got to turn off the news, ignore the political mumbo jumbo and take a dang break. If you also need a break from the devastation, fear and aggression often making the rounds in the news these days, that’s OK. But if there’s a time when you can help end a little of the world’s suffering, don’t hesitate. After all, doing a little good for others can definitely warm the heart! I just recorded a new episode last week on how to separate who you are from what you do.You can find it at findingmastery.net/support!Now to this week’s conversation… it’s with Major MJ HegarMJ, one of Foreign Policy Magazine's 100 Leading Global Thinkers of 2013 and one of Newsweek's 125 Women of Impact of 2012, was commissioned into the Air Force through ROTC at The University of Texas in 1999. She served on active duty as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer at Misawa Air Base, Japan, and Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri where she worked on the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the B-2 Stealth Bomber. Her maintenance career culminated in responsibility for 75% of all B-2 maintenance as a Captain and selection as the Company Grade Officer of the Year for 2003. In 2004, she was selected for pilot training by the Air National Guard. Upon completion of her training at the top of her class, she served three tours in Afghanistan flying Combat Search and Rescue as well as Medevac missions.During her time in the Guard, in addition to the deployments to Afghanistan, Major Hegar flew marijuana eradication missions, wildfire suppression with buckets of water on cargo slings, evacuated survivors from hurricane-devastated cities, and rescued many civilians on civil Search and Rescue missions in California and out at sea.On her third tour to Afghanistan on July 29th 2009, she was shot down on a Medevac mission and sustained wounds resulting in her being awarded the Purple Heart. Her actions on this mission saved the lives of her crew and patients, earning her the Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor Device (making MJ the sixth woman in history to receive the DFC...the first was Amelia Earhart...and only the second ever to receive it with the Valor Device). In 2012, Major Hegar filed suit against the Secretary of Defense asserting that the Combat Exclusion Policy was unconstitutional. In 2013, the Secretary of Defense repealed the Policy effective immediately.Talk about knowing what you stand for, having conviction, and going all the way forward.MJ contributes a lot of her success to the characteristics that were born out of the adversity she faced in her life. The heart of this conversation is centered around trust. Trust in self and trust for others. When a crisis arises can you trust yourself to make the right decision and trust those around you. Will you be able to think clearly and access your craft? Will you be able to pivot? Will you be able to perform eloquently in rugged and hostile environments? We all have rugged and hostile environments. They don't just involve combat. Every day we have opportunities to get right to our own edge where we're uncomfortable, where our heart thumps just a little bit when we're not sure if we can do the thing that we set out to do.All of those things show up on a regular basis for us so this isn't just reserved for military operators. Each one of us have moments where we're tested so there's a lot here for us to pay attention to.MJ talks about the importance of being able to be calm and she has a model that she's worked from which is, "Wind Your Watch" and it's a fun little applied tool that she shares in this conversation. We talk about the importance of having a cohesive team in the military and why outdated policies on integrating women had a significant impact on that cohesiveness. We discuss what it’s like to live with PTSD and how to best manage it.And lastly, we touch on the attribution theory - the way people explain the events in their lives.
