This episode inaugurates a series of episodes exploring the existentialist approach to modern philosophy by considering the most well-known work of the melancholic, Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard. Fear and Trembling: A Dialectical Lyric is a genre-bending blend of aesthetic criticism, biblical exegesis, and critical ethics. It is perhaps the most profound deliberation on the concept of faith in the history of philosophy. Firmly rooted in post-Kantian ethical universalism, Fear and Trembling attempts a first approximation at defining the relation between faith, deliberative choice, passion, and the limits of rational morality. It is a work that challenges our received notions of faith as immediate certainty or intuition and takes us to the limits of human understanding. Faith, for Kierkegaard, as exemplified in Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac is a matter of passionate interiority that defies intelligibility. In faith, we are gripped with an anxiety whose object is the paradox that tempts us to trespass the bounds of our understanding and our conventional ethical worldview. True faith is a rare human achievement that places the singular individual in an absolute relation to the absolute. Can the conviction of a passionate interiority which unifies a life around a singular decision be justified? Can passion or a purely personal virtue be reconciled with the public demands of ordinary social morality? Are there instances in our ethical life where our commitments force us to become an exception?

Are we called to mature in Christ? Absolutely. Are we called to do it in our own strength and ability? God is greater than we could ever possibly imagine and He deserves all of our reverence and praise. Yet so often, we treat God casually and therefore don't take His commands seriously as we often put ourselves at the center on the throne that belongs to God alone. How can we put God at the center of our lives? How can we have a holy sense of fear and trembling towards God? How can a bigger view of God enhance our view of the Gospel? This weekend Pastor Steve Andres continued our series, JOYFUL, with a message from the second chapter of Philippians.Philippians 2:12-13Work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to desire and to work for His good pleasure.Pride puts a chokehold on our growth, but humility opens the door for God to work in us.1) Humility is the soil in which all other graces grow.It is easy for us to be obsessed with ourselves, either in self-love or self-hatred. Looking to the interests of others is the opposite.Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.C.S. LewisJesus is our example of humility. We cannot out-serve him, out-love him, or out-give him.2) Obedience is answering the door.The Greek word for obey in the text is rooted in the idea of answering the door. When Paul tells us what Jesus did for us, he says obedience should be our response.3) God puts salvation in you, and you work it out.Paul isn't suggesting that we earn God's grace. But since he has given us a new nature in Christ, we have everything necessary to live for him!2 Peter 1:3His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life!

Father Genard emphasizes the importance of true believers having both joy and reverence for God. He mentions that God hears and sees everything, including our thoughts and intentions. He highlights the need for fear and trembling in our relationship with God, as seen in verses from the Bible. He underscores that our decisions and actions impact our life with Christ and ultimately our salvation. Father Genard also discusses the concept of abiding or remaining in Christ and the significance of communion in maintaining this connection with Christ in the context of the Church's practices. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever."
