He pointed out that many of President Trump's most popular ideas originally came from Ron Paul, including no taxes on tips and Social Security, no foreign aid, and no wars. He also discussed the Epstein Island scandal and how Jesus' example shows us that we should not expect Kings or Princes to save us. Instead, we should be working to save ourselves and our communities." Follow David Gornoski on X here: https://x.com/DavidGornoski Visit https://aneighborschoice.com for more

“Art is a form of prayer … a way to enter into relationship.”Artist and theologian Bruce Herman reflects on the sacred vocation of making, resisting consumerism, and the divine invitation to become co-creators. From Mark Rothko to Rainer Maria Rilke, to Andres Serrano's “Piss Christ” and T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets, he comments on the holy risk of artmaking and the sacred fire of creative origination.Together with Evan Rosa, Bruce Herman explores the divine vocation of art making as resistance to consumer culture and passive living. In this deeply poetic and wide-ranging conversation—and drawing from his book *Makers by Nature—*he invites us into a vision of art not as individual genius or commodity, but as service, dialogue, and co-creation rooted in love, not fear. They touch on ancient questions of human identity and desire, the creative implications of being made in the image of God, Buber's I and Thou, the scandal of the cross, Eliot's divine fire, Rothko's melancholy ecstasy, and how even making a loaf of bread can be a form of holy protest. A profound reflection on what it means to be human, and how we might change our lives—through beauty, vulnerability, and relational making.Episode Highlights“We are made by a Maker to be makers.”“ I think hope is being stolen from us Surreptitiously moment by moment hour by hour day by day.”“There is no them. Otherwise the curved breast could not dazzle you so, nor could a smile run through the placid hips and thighs to that dark center where procreation flared. Otherwise this stone would seem defaced beneath the translucent cascade of the shoulders and would not glisten like a wild beast's fur: would not, from all the borders of itself, burst like a star: for here there is no place that does not see you. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageBishop Robert Barron's compact 138-page book "An Introduction to Prayer" delivers profound spiritual wisdom that far exceeds its modest length. Exploring the concept of contrition—literally "crushing" from Latin—we're guided through an unflinching examination of conscience using the Ten Commandments as our framework. The journey begins with confronting our fundamental spiritual orientation: Who or what do we truly worship? Everyone has an ultimate concern, but when that concern is anything other than God—whether sex, money, power, status, or our ego—we experience spiritual fragmentation. The examination becomes increasingly challenging as we move through commandments addressing speech about God, concrete worship practices, family relationships, and how we handle violence in our lives. As we progress deeper, the questions become more uncomfortable. How does sexuality serve as gift rather than self-indulgence in our lives? Do we steal, even in small ways? What is the quality of our speech—how often do we tear others down? Do we covet what others have, feeding the competitive conflicts that Rene Girard identified as the source of so much human suffering? Just as Jesus cleared the temple in Jerusalem, we're invited to identify what needs clearing from the temple of our souls.Holy Week provides the perfect opportunity for this spiritual inventory and house cleaning. For Catholics, the increased availability of the Sacrament of Reconciliation during this sacred time offers a concrete way to express contrition and experience God's mercy. Whether through formal confession or personal prayer, this spiritual exercise prepares us to fully celebrate the resurrection with renewed hearts. Remember, Christ waits for us, rich in mercy, ready to transform our brokenness into Easter joy.Key Points from the Episode:• The prayer of contrition involves honestly confronting our sins and their impact• The first commandments challenge us to examine what we truly worship• Honoring family relationships serves as a foundation for all other relationships• Questions about violence extend beyond physical harm to our speech and impact on others• Sexual ethics should center on gift and authentic love, not self-indulgence• Our speech patterns often reveal our tendency to tear others down• Coveting leads to competitive conflicts that damage human relationships• Jesus clearing the temple serves as a metaphor for spiritual house cleaning• Regular examination of conscience reorients our souls toward GodThis Holy Week, take time for honest self-examination and, for Catholics, visit the sacrament of reconciliation. Our Lord is waiting for you and is rich in mercy.Other resources: Want to leave a review? New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope April 10, 2025 Day 4 of Week 2   Scripture – Mark 5:1-20   Prayer:  Almighty God, you are so good.  Thank you for your love, your mercy, and your forgiveness.  How amazing it is that you care so much for me.  You are my everything.  Help me take my scattered thoughts this morning and focus on you and you alone.  In these next few moments of silence, help me center myself on you...Holy Spirit, come and speak to me through your Word.  In Your Name, Amen.   Welcome to the Daily Dose of Hope, a Deep Dive into the Gospels and Acts.  Today, we begin Mark 5.    Jesus starts out this chapter going to the other side of the lake.  Just a reminder, the other side of the lake means he is leaving the Jewish towns and heading to the Gentile side.  As we have and will continue to see, Jesus has a pattern of going to the other side, responding to the need of the “other.” While Jesus cares for the insiders, he is constantly reaching out to the other–the Samaritan woman at the well, the bleeding woman, the lepers, the tax collectors, the woman caught in adultery–he is always reaching out and offering care and healing to those on the outside, the outcast, to those who don't belong, who have been pushed to the fringe. I do think this is a lesson for the church, that we also have been called to go to those who are “others” in our community.  Who is that for us?  How hard would it be for us to go to them in the name of Jesus?    Jesus gets out of the boat and sees the deranged man.  The man was so disturbed, he was living in the burial caves. Most likely he was a burden to the townspeople, an outcast, and their way of dealing with him was to force him to live far away.  The burial caves were most likely nasty, smelly, dirty. This is where the dead, decaying bodies were kept. And what I am struck by is how they had tried to subdue him, to chain him up, like an animal...and then day and night he howled and cut himself with sharp stones. I can't help but feeling overwhelming sadness for this man.  Cutting (self-harm) is usually the result of trauma. This was someone's son, someone's brother, maybe someone's father. He was a human being made in the image of God. And yet, his life had little value to the people of the town. He was an “other.” But Jesus saw him.   When Jesus was still a way off, the evil spirits inside the man recognize Jesus. Isn't it interesting that the evil spirits that were possessing the man knew Jesus immediately? In fact, they call him Son of the Most High God; there is instant recognition that this is the Son of God. The evil spirits know him but often the people that Jesus is ministering to fail to recognize him.   When Jesus asks the man his name, he replies, “Legion.” The word legion in that world would have referred to a group of 3000-6000 Roman soldiers. Here we have a legion of evil spirits. Maybe we think this is interesting but doesn't really apply to us. But aren't we also infected with many, many demons? As a land/nation–the demon of racism, of pandemic, of materialism and the love of money, of division, the demon of hate or distrust of the “other,” selfishness, envy, I could certainly go on. We are legion. As a church–we deal with the demon of apathy, of complacency, of self-reliance, of protecting our own, of division, we are legion. As individuals–think of all our demons–anger, rage, unforgiveness, pride, arrogance, bitterness, fear, disobedience, not loving our neighbor; His name was legion because there were many inside the man.   What does Jesus do? Well, he heals the man. He totally and completely heals him–physically, emotionally, spiritually.  It's amazing.  However, what's interesting here is that when the townspeople see the man healed, what do they do? Do they rush over to him and say, “How wonderful to see you healed and whole so you can have a nice life.” No, they're scared and they beg Jesus to leave. Why was that? Clearly, the loss of 2000 pigs would have been a terrible economic loss. But I think that would have made them mad not afraid.   I can't help thinking they want Jesus to leave because they didn't want to face their own demons. Rene Girard, a 20th century philosopher said, “Clearly the drowning of the pigs bothers them less than the drowning of their demons.” Is it that they didn't want to be healed? My guess is they wanted to be healed but they didn't want to do the work that leads to healing. And what work is that? Well, first it means admitting you have some issues. It means admitting they we don't have it all together. It means admitting that we are wounded and we may have wounded others. It means admitting that we can't handle it on our own, that we can't fix it, that we have been wrong, that we are hurting, that we need help, that we need healing deep within us. We don't need surface level healing because that's what got us here in the first place. We need deep soul healing.   TRUE healing always starts with Jesus. In fact, there is no true healing without Jesus. And healing ourselves, our churches, and our land, begins with healing the wounds of our own heart. Before we can heal the legion of demons that our nation is facing, we must address the evil within ourselves. Friends, have you faced the evil within yourself? We have to admit where we have fallen short. And don't think just the other side needs healing.   There is so much about this narrative that is incredible.  But I love, love, love what happens next. God gives this man a physical and spiritual healing. Then as a result, he goes and shares the Good News with all who would listen and “everyone was amazed at what he told them.” He receives new life and he can't keep it to himself.  He becomes an extraordinary missionary, sharing with whoever will listen what Jesus had done for him.  This is the thing: God heals us, God gives us stories of transformation, and then our response is to share them. God works through broken, flawed people like this man, like you, and like me.  Do you believe this?  When is the last time you shared your story of transformation?   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

The term scapegoat comes from the Ancient Israelite practice on the Day of Atonement. The priest confessed the wrong doings of the people over the head of the goat and the goat carried that guilt far away from the people. Rene Girard observed that all cultures have participated in scapegoating. Jesus was a scapegoat and his death and resurrection revealed the mechanism.

When we don't know who we are, we will act like someone else. French historian and social scientist Rene Girard developed a theory called "mimetic desire". It demonstrated how human beings imitate (mimic) each other's desires. They easily become rivals and reach for/want the same objects. When we reorient towards God and His love for us, we begin to see who we really are. Made in the image of God, loved by God, connected with God, and never apart from God. We no longer need to desire what others have, because we have what our soul truly desires.Support the show

Wicked is a wickedly relevant social commentary! Allow Catholic philosopher Rene Girard to explain the phenomena of mimetic desire and scapegoating in us all. Be prepared to be challenged!  Excerpt:  "In Wicked, another moment this mimetic desire is particularly on display is in the ballroom scene. Again, when Glinda mocked Elphaba's outrageous hat, everyone else mocked Elphaba, because everyone just wanted what Glinda wanted. But then Glinda suddenly has a change in her conscience and begins to feels sorry for Elphaba. She boldly steps out and reaches out to Elphaba on the dance floor, and begins to imitate her awkward dance moves. In that moment, Glinda herself wanted to imitate the courage of Elphaba, and Elphaba became the object of Glinda's mimesis. And then of course, suddenly everyone else changes their attitude towards Elphaba, not because they like her, but because now Glinda now likes her, and just like that, Elphaba's awkward, undesirable dancing style becomes desirable. Everyone is imitating everyone… except Elphaba, who is probably the most authentic character in the entire story!"   Links:Bishop Barron on Rene GirardJonathan Bi - Introduction to Mimetic Theory

John Zmirak Discusses His Latest Articles- ‘Anti-Racism:' The Opiate of the Sheeple The Eric Metaxas Show John Zmirak  Jan 11 2025   Other Episodes Big Bad John joins us to discuss the his recent article on the topic of January 6th   ‘Anti-Racism:' The Opiate of the Sheeple By John Zmirak Published on January 6, 2025 John Zmirak I've written here before about how antiracism has mutated from a small, healthy organ that served the Body of Christ into a monstrous tumor that threatens to kill it. I've analyzed White Guilt as a self-serving status game that white would-be elitists play to outrank other white people — with zero actual regard for the dignity or lives of non-white people, much less for their immortal souls. Now I must reluctantly return to this grim subject as the cascading scandal of Pakistani rape gangs in Britain gets exposed in lurid, soul-crushing detail. Elon Musk and former British Prime Minister Liz Truss have now weighed in on this, so the British establishment knows it can't imprison everyone who complains about the estimated 250,000 native British girls who've been gang-raped and trafficked in just 10 years, disproportionately by Pakistani immigrants. “Your Daughters Are Already Whores” What drove these Muslim imports to think they were entitled to sexually enslave Christians, apart from the long Muslim tradition of sexually enslaving Christians? (By the millions, via the Muslim white slave trade that continued for centuries.) This X post explains the phenomenon in light of Pakistan's inbred, intensely patriarchal culture: These hundreds of thousands of rapes — many inflicted on minors — were committed with total impunity, with local police and Labour politicians winking at the abuse, rejecting the pleas of victims and even in some cases arresting the hapless parents who tried to rescue their daughters. How and why could this happen? It was supposedly to prevent the rise of racism and avoid helping right-wing politicians who warned — correctly — that mass Third World Muslim immigration was ruining Britain. As a Catholic, hearing that brings back nauseating memories of bishops shuffling pedophile priests from parish to parish instead of calling in the police — supposedly to avoid the danger of “scandal” harming the Church and losing souls. Of course, these leftist politicians in Britain were serving their own religious cause: the post-Civil Rights movement cult of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. That infernal trinity, a three-headed golden calf, is now the idol worshiped by elites throughout the West. Those who refuse to prostrate themselves before this fetish face all the force of a secular inquisition. Britons are now sitting in prison cells for mildly complaining about immigration policy — cells which, not coincidentally, have been emptied of rapists and other assailants to make room for political dissidents. Should We Tell “Noble” Lies? This is happening right now in Britain — the nation that gave us the Magna Carta, parliaments, Common Law, and trial by jury. I was sickened even further when one of my favorite living writers, historian Tom Holland, doubled down on his comment from 10 years ago (before his conversion to Christianity): How noble is a goal that rests on secrecy and lies? Was it noble for Catholic bishops to protect the good name of the priesthood at the price of altar boys who were molested and damaged for life? Why is it any more noble than that to save the good name of deeply dysfunctional foreign communities that are infamous for child marriages and “honor killings”? If Pakistani culture really does accept such practices, it richly deserves contempt — and mass deportations to follow. The bishops who covered up for pedophile priests have been mostly disgraced for it now. They paid out some $3 billion in damages in the U.S. alone (though they made all that money back, dollar for dollar, trafficking immigrants via their taxpayer-funded nonprofits such as Catholic Charities). Will the vast, almost unthinkable scale of child rape in Britain discredit its authoritarian, censorship-happy Labour government and the mute, useless Tory party that only expanded immigration, as if to punish its voters? If We Don't Fight, the Pagans Will It's hard to say. You can't beat something with nothing, and antiracism remains the established church of most of the West. Maybe like the Aztec cult it can go on demanding human sacrifices for centuries because there is no live alternative. Christian churches that have dethroned Jesus Christ and replaced Him with canonized victims such as George Floyd won't fill the void. They're not even really Christian, except as cargo cults that use the borrowed imagery and symbols of a religion they've become at once too primitive and decadent to understand. If the Church won't provide an alternative to civilizational suicide, enraged neopagans will. Instead of shaping fetishes out of non-whites, they'll make whiteness an idol. The result will be ugly and violent, and the pasty-faced churchmen who willingly lived by lies will watch it all helplessly from their fainting couches, without even the decency to despise themselves for causing it. Please Support The Stream: Equipping Christians to Think Clearly About the Political, Economic, and Moral Issues of Our Day. Tom Holland, of all people, should know better. His brilliant book Dominion showed how Western notions of equality, fairness, and tolerance all emerged from the Gospel, not Greece or Rome. He even acknowledged that the woke movement was Christianity's illegitimate child. But he's too comfortably ensconced in British intellectual circles to recognize that this post-Christian bastard is trying to murder its father. And, frankly, he lives in a nice, safe neighborhood where no Pakistani gangs are likely to abduct and gang rape his children. Perhaps every British academic and politician should be forcibly relocated to more “diverse” parts of the country. Let's see how long it takes them to start sending checks to Tommy Robinson. Rene Girard, in his books such as I See Satan Fall Like Lightning, warned that the post-Christian substitute religion of Victimism is actually crueler, more perverse, and more opposed to the Gospel than any ancient pagan religion. It's also so frankly absurd and suicidal that it will burn out and destroy itself. But how many real victims, including young women with scars and trauma, will it claim before it collapses?   John Zmirak is a senior editor at The Stream and author or coauthor of 14 books, including The Politically Incorrect Guide to Immigration and The Politically Incorrect Guide to Catholicism. He is co-author with Jason Jones of “God, Guns, & the Government.”   John Zmirak's new book: No Second Amendment, No First  by John Zmirak  Available March 19, 2024 Today's Left endlessly preaches the evils of “gun violence." It is a message increasingly echoed from the nation's pulpits, presented as common-sense decency and virtue. Calls for “radical non-violence” are routinely endowed with the imprimatur of religious doctrine.   But what if such teachings were misguided, even damaging? What if the potential of a citizenry to exercise force against violent criminals and tyrannical governments is not just compatible with church teaching, but flows from the very heart of Biblical faith and reason? What if the freedoms we treasure are intimately tied to the power to resist violent coercion?  This is the long-overdue case John Zmirak makes with stunning clarity and conviction in No Second Amendment, No First. A Yale-educated journalist and former college professor, Zmirak shows how the right of self-defense against authoritarian government was affirmed in both the Old and New Testaments, is implied in Natural Law, and has been part of Church tradition over the centuries.   Zmirak further shows how today's mounting threats to the gun rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment are inexorably linked to the   HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD!  Please go to Apple Podcasts and give ACU a 5 star rating. Techno-Authoritarianism, Balaji Srinivasan's Network State, and the Big Tech Oligarchs Backing MAGA w/ Gil Duran

Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2024 49:36

On this edition of Parallax Views, San Francisco-based journalist Gil Duran, a former communications director for U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein & Kamala Harris (during her time as Attorney General), joins the show to discuss the big tech oligarchs backing Donald Trump, JD Vance, and MAGA this election season and their strange, science fiction-sounding techno-authoritarian vision for America. Gil Duran recently wrote two pieces in The New Republic that will form the basis for this conversation. The first, "Where J.D. Vance Gets His Weird, Terrifying Techno-Authoritarian Ideas", deals with JD Vance and the figure of Mencius Moldbug aka Curtis Yarvin, both of whom have a conneciton to Peter Thiel. Moldbug/Yarvin, for the uninitiated, is a key figure in the formation of what's come to be known as "Neo-Reaction" (NRx). Yarvin has promoted many ideas over the years, including the creation of corporate-controlled sovereign "realms" such as an imagined version of San Francisco called "Friscorps". These realms would essentially serve as panopticon-esque Orwellian surveillance systems. For example, in regard to his concept of Friscorps, Yarvin writes: “All residents, even temporary visitors, carry an ID card with RFID response. All are genotyped and iris-scanned. Public places and transportation systems track everyone. Security cameras are ubiquitous. Every car knows where it is, and who is sitting in it, and tells the authorities both.” We'll delve into Yarvin's ideas about patchworks, his strange writings about using humans as biodiesel fuel, and, most importantly, how his RAGE (Retire All Government Employees) plan bears similarties to Project 2025. And yes, as previously mentioned, we'll discuss how both Vance and Yarvin are tied to Peter Thiel. The second article, also from The New Republic, that informs much of Gil and I's discussion is entitled "The Tech Baron Seeking to Purge San Francisco of 'Blues'". That piece deals with the figure of venture capitalist Balaji Srinivasan and his rather right-wing, techno-authoritarian vision for San Francisco vis-a-vis a concept called the Network State. We'll delve into Srinivasan's ideas about the Network State as well as a concept he refers to as "techno-Zionism" and the conflict between what he calls the gray tribe (tech-loyalists) and the blue tribe (liberal voters). According to Duran, Srinivasan's vision involves purging Blues from San Francisco. “Take total control of your neighborhood. Push out all Blues. Tell them they're ... unwelcome,” Srinivasan says, "Just as Blues ethnically cleanse me out of San Francisco, like, push out all Blues.” We'll dissect exactly what Srinivasan meant by that and much more. Additionally, Gil and I will delve into why these figures are fascinated by the figure of French philosopher Rene Girard and his writings on the scapegoat mechanism of mimetic theory, how these figures are influenced by the controversial legal theorist Carl Schmitt (who worked for the Nazis under Hitler's Third Reich) and Schmitt's concept of the Sovereign and the State of Exception, and much, much more. In other words, you'll be hearing episode pulling the curtain back on the Silicon Valley/venture capitalist right-wing in California and America more broadly.

If you're always imitating others or aspiring to be something else, what's left of the "authentic" you? According to the French philosopher René Girard, not much: Nothing can be truly authentic, he argued--everything comes from somewhere else. This is just one of the many original and counterintuitive claims put forth in Girard's sweeping approach to human history. He argues it is sameness, not our difference that leads to conflict, and he sees religion as a way to contain the chaos as opposed to its first cause. Listen as Stanford University scholar Cynthia Haven speaks with EconTalk's Russ Roberts about Girard's theories of desire and violence. The conversation also includes a discussion of the power of forgiveness to put a stop to conflict's rinse-and-repeat.
