NOCLIP

Don't tell anyone, but I always thought they were podcasts. Welcome back to NOCLIP! Today, we're going to be talking about To the Moon, a narrative game focused around learning about characters through one's memory. I imagine this description will be quite short, because there isn't a lot I can cover without spoiling the plot. While technically a sci-fi story, the game revolves around one character's past, so those elements fall more into the background during the meat of the gameplay. The result is that despite the fantastical premise, the majority of the game feels very mundane which has the effect of making it easier for the player to relate to the characters in the story, and it's very effective because the game operates on a personal level. As you learn more about each of the primary characters, you can start to see the depth they have and that characterization and what you think about their actions and motivations will influence the way you perceive the overall story. It kind of sounds like I'm just describing how to read a story, but engaging with this game the way you would a book or a movie will probably do you better than coming into it like it was Chrono Trigger. This is an extremely well written story with very little interactivity, and it's well worth checking out if you're in the mood for something simple. We're going to be talking about what being a game brings to the table for this experience, how the game goes handles its characters, and we speak ill (and not so ill) of the dead. Thank you for joining us again this week! We're on the last of our Mystery May games after this, and it's so far been a year for actually covering the games that have been on our list for a long time. The tragedy of this game, aside from Johnny's story itself, is that we waited so long to play it that it feels to me almost obsolete as a game, though not as a narrative, which still feels very well written. Did you feel similarly to me, or were you more engaged due to the interactivity? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! Next time, we ended up rolling a game that is has been on the list for less time than the other games this year, but one we're excited for anyway, Spiritfarer, so we hope you'll join us then!

A common question Paul hears about this younger generation is: Isn't it worse for us now? With wage stagnation and tough housing markets, it could be very easy to assume it is harder. After all, houses were for sale for $30,000 fifty years ago. Paul and Evan expand the question by including the concept of quality of life. Was the average single-family home in 1960 the same quality as the average single-family home in 2010? Did it have the same amenities? Was it larger or smaller? Listen along to hear these advisors explain why cost of living and quality of life work together to paint a more optimistic picture for younger generations.    For more information about what we do or how we can help you, schedule a 15-minute call with us here: paulwinkler.com/call.

When discussing the topic of true beauty, it's also important to talk about the times when life isn't so beautiful. In today's discussion, with Michelle Keener, that's exactly what we tackle. Michelle K. Keener (PhD, Liberty) is an adjunct professor of Christianity at Houston Christian University, as well as associate research fellow with the Kirby-Laing Centre for Public Theology. She is also the director of discipleship for a growing church in Las Vegas and an award-winning novelist and devotional author.  In our time together, we discuss Michelle's latest book, Comfort in the Ashes: Explorations in the Book of Job to Support Trauma Survivors. Michelle helps us see how we can be a loving, healing presence to those undergoing struggles, how the church can be more helpful and attentive to those undergoing or recovering from trauma, and what Job teaches us about the beauty of God amidst suffering. My hope is that this conversation will help you feel less alone in any struggle you may be undergoing and, as Michelle says, may we experience God to be our place of refuge.Buy Melissa L. Spiritual disciplines as a concept can often feel intimidating. Are they legalism in disguise? Or are they essential to a vibrant walk with God? In this episode, Jonathan and Laurie are joined by professor and author Donald Whitney to discuss his book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and what it means to “discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.”Together, they explore the heart behind spiritual discipline, and why prayer and Scripture intake are foundational for every believer. Don offers practical encouragement for those who feel stuck in dry devotional routines, and reminds us that even five minutes with God can bear fruit for eternity. If you enjoyed this episode be sure to leave us a review on wherever you listen!  Also remember to share with friends and family; both of those actions will help us spread the word about the show.To learn more about Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, click here.

Through personal stories and practical insights, we discuss how to embrace imperfection, prioritize progress over perfection, and reframe “fine” as a sign of resilience rather than avoidance.
