In this week's RKO Studios Year by Year episode, we discuss our favourite movies from our first round with the studio and how that round shaped our impression of RKO, and then turn to two new 1930 movies: Framed (directed by George Archainbaud), a gangster movie focused on Evelyn Brent's tough/tender mixed-up moll, and The Runaway Bride (directed by Donald Crisp), a shaggy showcase for Mary Astor's affability. But wait, there's more! In Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we debate the meanings and merits of two daring films by Mai Zetterling, Amorosa (1986) and Night Games (1966), and dissect the post-WWII ennui of two by Binka Zhelyazkova, Life Flows Quietly By... (1957) and The Big Night Bathe (1980).  Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s: RKO Recap 0h 14m 54s: FRAMED [dir. In this week's Lilli Palmer Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode, we encounter more Nazis in a couple of movies very loosely based on real WWII incidents: Disney's Miracle of the White Stallions (1963), based on Operation Cowboy (but with the equine eugenics shoved into the subtext), and Operation Crossbow (1965), about the attempt by British Intelligence to stop the threat of Nazi rockets. Sophia Loren shares a great scene with Lilli Palmer in the latter, but to say more would be spoilers. In Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we discuss our viewings of two more Powell Pressburgers, A Canterbury Tale and The Tales of Hoffman, plus an adjacent film, The Thief of Bagdad (1940), a Korda production co-directed by Powell and starring Sabu and Rex Ingram.  Time Codes: 0h 00m 30s:      MIRACLE OF THE WHITE STALLIONS (1963) [dir. Our Valentine's Day 2023 episode is all about loves from the past who have inconveniently returned. In My Favorite Wife (1940), Irene Dunne is newly remarried Cary Grant's presumed dead wife, while in Kiss Me Goodbye (1982), James Caan is Sally Field's actually dead, or undead, husband, interfering with her engagement to the (ostensibly) less charismatic Jeff Bridges. We apply Stanley Cavell's concept of the "comedy of remarriage" to these movies and conclude that the comedy of My Favorite Wife really has nothing to do with its premise, whereas Kiss Me Goodbye does perform some interesting twists on comedy of remarriage tropes. In Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, two more movies about love pick up these themes: Stanley Kwan's Rouge (1987) and Dorothy Arzner's Merrily We Go to Hell (1932). Happy Haunted Valentine's Day! I feel like someone needs to hear these words: DON'T FREAK OUT ABOUT WHAT HASN'T HAPPENED YET. We spend so much energy and emotion with comparison, day dreaming, distraction and not enough time to actually be present and focusing on what God is calling us to do. Why do we always allow our emotions to dictate what we do? because we don't practice listening to God's voice. So many of us are not living IN our dream/full potential/our calling because we are too busy living IN FEAR. I hope this podcast inspires you to live a PRESENT life. Welcome to episode of Off The Beat & Track Podcast with me Stu Whiffen. This episodes special guest is Film Score composer, 2 time Golden Globe Nominee and smashing chap Daniel PembertonI met with Daniel at WeWork in East London and he came armed with a bag of tunes containing 7 fantastic records each which have sound tracked his life to date and we go in on that journey discussing growing up, youth cultures, art, films, synths, clubbing and so much moreDaniel Pemberton is an Ivor Novello–winning, multi Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-nominated composer who has regularly been cited as one of the most exciting and original new voices working in modern film scoring today.Daniel’s song, performed by Iggy Pop, from his score for the film Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey, was nominated for a 2017 Golden Globe Award – Best Original Song. The previous year he was nominated for Golden Globe Award – Best Original Score for Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet.Drawing on a richly diverse set of influences, from English folk to hip-hop; nordic metal to musique concrete; Daniel’s score to Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword is a showcase of a composer unafraid to take risks and revel in pushing the boundaries of modern film scoring. His previous collaboration with Ritchie on The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was widely critically lauded for its bold writing and innovative arrangements earning him – alongside the features Steve Jobs and the Cannes Palm D’Or nominee Mal De Pierres – a nomination for Film Composer of the Year at the 2016 World Soundtrack Awards. He was previously honoured as Discovery of The Year at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2014 for his work on The Counselor as well as the features Blood, In Fear, and Cuban Fury. Recent scores include the Richard Curtis-penned Danny Boyle-directed Yesterday, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Warner Bros’ Ocean’s Eight, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for Netflix.Having worked in British television for over two decades on countless Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning dramas and documentaries (such as Peep Show, Complicit, Upstairs Downstairs, Dirk Gently, Prey, Space Dive,Occupation, Desperate Romantics and Hiroshima) his big break into feature films came after Ridley Scott was so impressed with Daniel’s debut film score in 2011 for the period supernatural thriller The Awakening that he hired the him to score his feature The Counselor. The pair collaborated again on Scott’s first directorial foray into television, The Vatican, on the Watergate thriller Felt, produced by Scott, directed by Peter Landesman and starring Liam Neeson, and on All The Money In The World, starring Mark Wahlberg.Hope you enjoy this chat and if you do please subscribe and follow the podcast on the social media links belowOff The Beat & Track

Ignite Your Purpose Daily Show 118 #IYP Ignite Your Purpose - Episode 118 Putting it into Motion-Meet the #universe half way~ John Barrett practices what he #preaches and 10X's it. BOOM!! We spoke yesterday about setting the bar too low. This is something that John and I have been speaking about on and off for about a month...lets say all of August... it just keeps creeping into our talks. So John decided to email a few of the people close to him on the island the lives on...just to chat and just to expand his #knowledgebase...no set agenda, but to just see where it took him. He got replies and set the meetings up. When I woke up this morning I was blasted with messages to call him ASAP and there was major news and items we needed to discuss. By John taking this action (no word of a lie) and in this one specific meeting for real changed the forward path of Ignite Your Purpose, because John meet with a BIG DOG that has been 10 Xing it for decades...and the idea's that came out of his head for us to implement along with the fact other may jump on board is a whole other level I do not think John and I took as an option just a few days ago...truly incredible! Having said that...and this is why Ignite Your Purpose is different; we keep it real, we are not on a soap box preaching ...we are in the #streets or #trenches #slugging it out just like everyone else. So while our excitement was at 210%....There were certain points in the conversation that we both sat speechless (and we asked each other why) we were both IN FEAR of the unknown... saying things like well this seems like a lot of work, how long will it take, how much money will it take, do we have the skill set, can we do this. How amazing it was to both of us that when a massive opportunity like this lands in your lap, you can almost kill it off before it even begins

He and his wife, Melody, had planned to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail from March 2014—which is what they did. They flip-flopped and completed their adventure at Harpers Ferry in November 2014, just over a year after the news that would have postponed, or even abandoned the dreams of less determined people.       Their remarkable story, along with the radical lifestyle that they have since adopted, is told in this interview. They are homeless by choice, fearless, and ever moving forward, refusing to stop their enviable lifestyle. Melody even had the time to give me a botany lesson on the trail, identifying plants as we walked by until she pointed out something that she referred to as a Lady Slipper, but which, to me, would always be known as Vasectomy Surprise.   John and Melody would be happy to hear from old friends and fellow hikers at jhbock3@gmail.com, while they can also be found on Facebook. Click either John or Melody.   Their journey wasn't easy, but they made many friends along the way and proved, yet again, that the trail can get you through your toughest days if you keep moving forward.     Attie continues to revel in the trail, though this week she had her first setback. When she told me about it I was worried for her but she just shrugged it off and got on with it. Her perseverance was rewarded with a really sweet dollop of trail magic, administered by one of our wonderful, caring listeners. Thanks, Casey.   In Fear and Loathing, Gary Sizer confesses to his worries about having a damp hike, and admits to his doubts along the way as he got closer to Katahdin. You can read about Gary's journey by going to his Amazon page for Where's the Next Shelter? It is a really funny read and one that I highly recommend.   Please consider supporting the show by becoming a patron at Patreon. Thanks to those of you who have already done so.

Producing a TV or Web Series is a long process and big commitment. With many moving parts and different directors on each episode, the production can balloon very quickly and just as quickly it can go off the rails. With the success of In Fear Of behind him, Scott tells us many of the pitfalls he experiences, from running out of money, pitching to producers, directors walking off set and the fallout from the burning of friendships. This is one episode that truly lives up to the title of "Filmmaking Sucks" and proves that time, patience, and perseverance are your greatest assets. If you've experienced a bad shoot, or a failed production, then this discussion proves you're not alone and that giving up is not an option.  You can find Scott W. Every writer has a process, and it's different for each one. This week, Manny and Lindsay sit down with writer/producer/director Scott W. Perry and discuss the process of completing a script.  Scott is the producer of the web series "In Fear Of" where he collaborated with over a dozen directors and writers. In a situation like that, you learn the art of collaboration, and in that comes the true form of filmmaking, but it all begins with the script.  There are also certain guidelines that can be used when writing a script, which can help you move your screenplay forward when you're stuck. There are also other things which producers will look for when reading a script, and we will discuss what some of these guidelines are, and how you can get a producers attention, without them actually reading your script.  From the writing of Joseph Campbell and Syd Field, to finding inspiration, knowing your characters, creating a world, setting your themes, and writing for TV vs film, there are many parts to a good screenplay, and we discuss each of them on this in-depth episode of Filmmaking Sucks! You can find Scott W. Perrys web series In Fear of on Facebook at facebook.com/InFearOf and on twitter at @scottwperry1977.  One thing that helps is to give myself permission to write badly. I tell myself that I’m going to do my five or 10 pages no matter what, and that I can always tear them up the following morning if I want. I’ll have lost nothing—writing and tearing up five pages would leave me no further behind than if I took the day off. —Lawrence Block Subscribe to us on iTunes, Stitcher, YouTube, Google Play, or your favorite podcatching app. And don't forget to rate and review us!
