House sitting is a topic that has not been discussed on the podcast yet before. It is also something that I have not seen being discussed very much among travel influencers. However, I've come to learn that there are many opportunities available for travelers to live in places long term and have free room and board through house sitting. My guest today is such a traveler. In this episode, I'm joined by fellow travel blogger and podcaster, Samantha Anthony. Samantha is the creator and author of Alternative Travelers. A travel blog through which she shares her insights on house sitting, sustainable travel, and traveling as a vegan. She also has The Alternative Travelers Podcast, which she runs along with her cohost and partner, Veren. For Samantha, traveling began at a very young age, with her mother instilling a sense of adventure by taking her and her sister to different parts of Europe. Later on down the road, Samantha sought out more ways to get out and travel. This included living in Spain for three years as an expat teaching English. She also spent some time working as an archaeologist. And conducted fieldwork in both Spain, Portugal, and New York City. And now she, along with her partner, have lived in multiple places around the US and Europe through house sitting. In this episode, Samantha tells us more about her story. Talking about her experiences with house sitting and going over how you too can see the world through house sitting. We also discuss many things that have not been brought up on the podcast before! Samantha Gash is an authentic storyteller, world-class athlete, social entrepreneur, and mother. To her, running is the mechanism that helps her contribute to causes larger than herself. Driven by social impact, she’s helped raise over 1.3 million dollars for causes including women empowerment and child access to education.   In this conversation, Samantha and Tina unpack the deep wisdom she’s learned over the years, and how lessons she learned as an athlete translate over into helping navigate life’s obstacles. Samantha touches on her expeditions in Australia and South Africa and completing the 4 Deserts Grand Slam– four 250K ultra marathons in which she was the first woman and youngest person to complete in one calendar year.  4 Lessons  Good ideas take time. Samantha encourages us to look inward at our intentions behind our ideas. We have to break them down to the core and discover the “why” behind why we do what we do. Our ideas won’t be perfect at first, they take time to change and grow.  Don’t let ego drive your life. Ego can burn and destroy you, Samantha says. It can consume what you’re doing and why, so you must keep it in check. Don’t be afraid to show parts of you that aren't perfect. It’s good for people to see rawness in you, and then see your growth. Ask yourself, “What can this experience be outside of myself?” Passion is about endurance. The word “passion” gets thrown around in the context of pursuing a job you love. But Samantha reminds us that the Latin root of passion means endurance. It’s about finding ways to get through tough moments. There are always going to be monumental setbacks, but you have to keep grinding. Don’t rush the process, take breaks, and look at your life with fresh eyes.  Change is always happening. Life isn’t static. For Samantha, COVID-19 changed her life overnight. Races halted, goals paused, traveling canceled. But she said she somehow was able to adapt to new habits without skipping much of a beat. She said since her life has normally always been filled with change, she’s become used to pivoting. Quarantine has allowed her more time with her son and husband as well as reminded her to go back to her roots as to why she began running in the first place.  Highlights “Don’t rush into things. Your body and mind take time to adapt. Things need time to organically build.” “I’m a realistic optimist. I’m good at saying, ‘this situation isn't optimal and I’m struggling, but how can I pivot that into something positive?’” “Maybe the adventure and running that I experience in ultramarathon environments are my vehicle, my mechanism for contributing to something bigger than myself.”   Resources: Samantha’s Podcast Samantha’s Instagram  Samantha’s Website  Samantha on the Rich Roll Podcast    Thank you to my wonderful sponsor Athletic Greens and Insidetracker for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast.   Athletic Greens is a simple and easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. The Reno Aces are the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Reno 1868 FC is part of the United Soccer League and the USL affiliate of the MLS San Jose Earthquakes. Samantha Hicks is responsible for driving revenue streams for both properties. Bringing over 13 years' experience in the sports industry, she currently oversees the Sponsorship and Ticket Sales departments for both clubs. She was entering her 5th season with the clubs when the COVID 19 Global Pandemic hit. She has adapted her leadership to run revenue save campaigns for both sports. Making sure Sponsors and Season Members rollover their commitment to 2021 and beyond despite the current state of the Sports Industry having zero fans in stadium. Hicks has spearheaded sales strategy centered around driving millions of dollars year over year to keep the business thriving in downtown Reno. She is passionate about exceeding goals and helping people grow in their career. Previously, she worked for NBA/WNBA franchises in the Indiana Pacers & Fever and the Detroit Pistons & Shock. She has been part of two WNBA Championships. Hicks spearheaded the Sellout WNBA Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in October 2012. Samantha has lived in Northern Nevada for five years. She loves spending time with her family and visiting Lake Tahoe. When she is not behind Microsoft Teams in this remote setting you can catch her walking her Dog Duncan and attempting to cook! Top 4 Takeaways. At the start of your career, find a few people you look up to in the company and just observe them. What is their body language, how are they dressing, how do they run a meeting, and how are they interacting with people? You can learn so much just through observation. Set goals for yourself. You don't have to tell anyone but it's so important that you set goals for yourself. Silent pursuance is OK, just be clear and honest with what YOU want to achieve. Developing as a leader is a process, we learn through experience and we don't always get it right. For Samantha, being her true, authentic self has been the key to her success. The more she has showed her staff who she is, the more they have showed her who they are and showed up better for the job. You have to be prepared and ready for your people. It's a sign of respect to be prepared for the meeting. Use the 15 reminder on Outlook and your phone as a tool to get into the mindset of your meeting. To be extra prepared, review your schedule the night before or in the morning so you know what you signed up for that day. My guest on this week’s podcast episode, Samantha Goldsmith is a serial entrepreneur who has created a number of successful business whether that was in real estate, multi-level marketing or as strategist. Ever since she was little she was raised to be an overachiever which brought her a lot of success early on, but also left her constantly unsatisfied. As a recovering perfectionist her desire is to help women embrace their uniqueness and find solutions that work FOR THEM. Samantha shares her story of how being an overachiever left her feeling, empty, unsatisfied, unworthy and made her experience health issues. She teaches you how she created more ease, self-love and respect for oneself. If you are constantly doing things, being busy, trying to move forward and achieve the next result, but end up feeling frustrated, empty, insignificant, not enough and burnt out, this is an episode you need to listen to. We mistake our worth with achievements. We mistake being busy with moving forward. What may seem like the same thing on the first glance, is fundamentally different in real life. We as human beings have the inner urge to grow, to advance and to prosper in life. And when you were raised to be an achiever, it goes against your programming to not do anything. You need to be doing something. You need to get results. You need to be significant. But here’s the deal, just because you do a lot, doesn’t mean you’re actually advancing or growing in any way. And it certainly doesn't say anything about your worth! It just means that you are constantly spending your energy on things. Whether it is helping you or not is a totally different story. For Samantha success is defined in a different way now. Today, she looks at how she can achieve her goals with more ease and less time spent on it. How did she manage to twist her approach 180° and become even more successful? Find out in this week’s episode where Samantha and I talk about how to switch gears form busyness into actual forward movement separate your worth from the results you’re getting find true respect for yourself create more time freedom for yourself apply the 1 thing that will push your business forward the importance of grit in creating what it is you want

A former war correspondent and UN ambassador, Samantha Power has had her share of tough assignments. But writing a memoir about it all is also a daunting prospect. The format itself is a challenge: how do you convince the reader you’re worth spending time with? How do you paint a relatable portrait without oversharing and losing your dignity? For Samantha the answer was settling upon a purpose for her memoir and ruthlessly cutting out everything not in service of that. Tyler and Samantha discuss that purpose and more, including what she learned as an Irish immigrant, the personality traits of good diplomats (and war correspondents), relations with China, why democracy is so rare in the Middle East, the truth about Richard Holbrooke, what factors mitigate against humanitarian intervention, her favorite memoir, how to get NATO members to spend more on defense, and whether baseball games are too long. Mission #37 On Board: Samantha Pilbeam Mission: Attracting Dream Relationships and a Dream Life The Co-Pilot: Our co-pilot on this episode is the lovely Samantha Pilbeam, a businesswoman and entrepreneur who manifested her dream life -- and even her ideal partner -- through the Law of Attraction and following a continuing path of self-improvement. Samantha, who lives in the UK with her partner Greg, was once stuck in a life characterized by low self-esteem and unhealthy relationships. Using various tools and techniques, she crafted a better life for herself and became the happy, fulfilled, successful woman she is today. Thanks to her own life experiences, she’s passionate about helping others and making the world a better place. That’s what she’s here to do today. In this episode, you’ll learn all about how she manifested her ideal life, and the daily steps you can take to do the same. As Orion puts it, “Your vibration needs to match the life you want.” Connect With Samantha Pilbeam:samanthapilbeam@me.com The Mission Log: [05:11] - Samantha shares a bit about herself, including where she lives and a broad overview of her relationship with her partner. [05:50] - We learn about Samantha’s history of being attracted to men who weren’t right for her, or drawn into dysfunctional relationships. [06:16] - Samantha’s first role models were her parents, who had a dysfunctional relationship. She describes their differences. [07:03] - The type of men who Samantha attracted (and was attracted to) were very similar to her father. [07:44] - Are women going to the wrong places to find love? Samantha indirectly answers that via her own life story. [08:27] - Samantha describes her previous life at the time that she started to realize she needed to make a change, around ten years ago. [09:31] - What was the void, and what was the catalyst for change? [10:24] - The moment that made Samantha realized she really needed a change was when her then-partner punched her in the face. Orion and Samantha discuss how sometimes it takes painful moments to make you realize you need change, and they can be a gift in disguise. [12:14] - At the time, Samantha’s friends and family provided a support group for her. [13:35] - Samantha reflects on her previous relationships, pointing out that what she then thought was “love” wasn’t really love, and that low self-esteem contributed to her decisions. [16:02] - We hear more about Samantha’s life before she learned how to love herself. [17:10] - If you come from a lineage of being treated unkindly, it’s up to you to stand up and change that tradition, Orion explains. [17:39] - Samantha agrees with Orion’s explanation, then applies the same concept to the relation with money. She explores the difference between having a lot of money and experiencing abundance. [18:46] - Samantha opened a beauty business during the middle of the recession, and discovered breathwork and rebirthing around that same time. [19:35] - She describes the experience of doing rebirthing, and how much it can vary from time to time. She also tells us a bit about the self-discoveries that she made this way. [21:10] - Samantha discusses how often she did breathwork, and the three different modules in which she did it. [21:57] - Breathwork isn’t just motivational; it involves a lot of work, dealing with a lot of pain. Samantha noticed that after doing breathwork, she started to love herself more. [23:13] - We hear about how Samantha used breathwork and meditation to help overcome her issues surrounding money. Darius Barazandeh helped her with this. [24:23] - Samantha tells us about the men who started showing up in her life after she started doing breathwork and changing herself. [25:39] - True masculinity doesn’t need to take stereotypically masculine forms. For Samantha, true masculinity is a man who treats a woman like a goddess. [26:34] - The man who Samantha is currently with is exactly what she wrote down when she did her manifesting. We also hear about her previous relationship. [27:42] - Several years earlier, Samantha had taken a Law of Attraction course by Tony Robbins (but in her case, led by Joseph McClendon). She stopped for a while after being freaked out by how quickly she started attracting things into her life. [30:10] - At the time, she explains, she wasn’t ready to receive the life she wanted. Part of her wanted to stay in “suffering mode” because that was the life she was used to. [31:14] - When Samantha next used the Law of Attraction, after having done the breathwork, she was ready to receive. She was also ready for the element of surrender that it required. [32:08] - Orion steps in for a moment to explain what she means by “surrender.” [32:55] - Samantha agrees with Orion’s description, and goes on to explain that her fear was also part of what led to her being in those unhealthy relationships. [33:33] - How did Samantha find Mr. Right? [35:30] - How did she start believing in the Law of Attraction in a way that allowed her to manifest the things she had written on her list? [36:18] - Samantha took about 15 to 20 minutes every morning for her exercise in believing in the Law of Attraction. [37:00] - By the end of the two weeks Samantha took to make herself believe in the Law of Attraction, she let go of the idea because she believed in it so fully that she just knew it would work. She set up a Meetup group several months later, and her partner Greg showed up at the first meeting. [38:10] - Samantha tells us about how she and Greg started dating, and how she realized that he was “the one” for her. [40:22] - What has Samantha done to keep the love alive (and the relationship healthy) after the initial sparks of the relationship wore off? [41:54] - In a successful relationship, both parties take responsibility for their own happiness rather than trying to find it in their partner. [43:48] - Samantha’s three tips for living a stellar life are: appreciate what you have and show gratitude, give yourself love, and give back to people and the world. [44:20] - Samantha offers listeners a gift: her husband Greg is an NLP (neuro linguistic programming) trainer, and they’re offering two listeners a free NLP course early next year (January 4-10 in the Lake District in the UK). Flights and accommodation are not included, but the course is free. To enter, write Samantha a short email about why you think you should be picked and explaining your path and how this will help you (and how you will help the world). Send this to her at samanthapilbeam@me.com. Your Pre-Flight Checklist: Pain can be a catalyst for change. Write down three recent life events that have been painful (or issues that continue to cause you pain), and then, for each one, three ways that you can turn that pain into positive change. Every morning, look in the mirror and take five minutes to practice valuing yourself. Tell yourself “I love you,” and look for the beauty reflected in the mirror -- focusing on both your internal and external beauty. We all want more money, but money doesn’t create a sense of abundance. Take ten minutes each day for a month to start a gratitude journal. Explore the forms of abundance that you do have in your life. Links and Resources: Darius BarazandehBreathwork RebirthingTony RobbinsLaw of AttractionJoseph McClendonNLPVision board
