‘An adventure is a journey with an unknown outcome'. Which begs the question, what is our relationship like with the unknown? What does it take to step out into an adventure and let go of the outcome? In this episode I chat once again with the incredible endurance athlete and beautiful friend Samantha Gash. I first chatted with Sam in Episode 105 of this podcast - in that convo we dived more into her background and drive towards adventures - so definitely check that out. Sam is an accomplished lawyer turned endurance athlete - and may be well-known to you after two appearances on Australian Survivor. In this episode we dive into Sam's latest adventure - hiking across the Nepal (yep Sam loves to find a country and adventure across it). Sam shares some of the insights she is discovering as she starts to consolidate and reflect on this achievement. We talk about putting ourselves in the way of challenges and exploring resilience. And we dive into ‘Her Trails' which is a female adventure community which Sam & Bec Wilcox started during the pandemic. One of the keys to facing challenges and the unknown are the deep relationships we create and invest in along the way. At her heart Sam is a gatherer of people. If adventure and your relationship with the unknown are things you are ready to explore, then soak up this conversation with Samantha Gash. In this episode of the podcast, I caught up with Samantha Gash, an incredible Endurance Athlete, Global Keynote Speaker, Social Impactor, Adventurer, and Co-Founder of Her Trails (a trail running program and community for women). Samantha was one of the pioneers of the ‘running for change movement', where people run to raise money for and bring awareness to causes, they're passionate about. She has run across India, South Africa, and Nepal, raising millions of dollars for various charities like World Vision and Save The Children. In 2010, she became the youngest female to complete the Four Desert Grand Slam, a series of four 250 KM ultramarathons across the world's most unforgiving terrain, and in 2012 she ran 379km non-stop across Australia's Simpson Desert, which took her 3 days, 14 hours and 28 minutes. We explore the valuable lessons she's learned about perseverance, grit, and pushing beyond one's limits, and we discuss her passion for supporting other women with their running. Samantha has been an enormous mentor of mine over the past 5 years and was the first person I reached out to when I was starting out on my own ultra-running journey. I can't thank Sam enough for her support and I hope you enjoy my conversation with this remarkable woman. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a review and share it with others!Unlock your FREE one week trial with us at https://first42k.com.au. To say that Sam Gash is inspiring is the understatement of the year. But before I tell you more about her, what I want to make sure I mention right off the bat is that this weekend — June 11 through June 13, 2021 — Sam is helping to put together an awesome event called Relief Run to benefit World Vision Australia's India COVID-19 appeal, which will see funding provide more beds, oxygen machines and medical supplies in hospitals in some of the worst hit districts. While things are feeling more normal here, the state of affairs over in India is frightening. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 1 in 49 residents have been infected, with a total of more than 27 million cases. If Relief Run sounds familiar, that's because last year's installment raised more than $1 million in support of Australian bushfire relief efforts. To participate, register at ReliefRun.com.au/ and then walk or run a all over the world to run or walk 5K, 10K, or half-marathon at a location and time that suits you. I'm doing it, and I hope you will too. Now, a little more on Sam. Sam is a social entrepreneur and former Survivor contestant, as we mention in todays episode we actually met on an unbelievable trip to ibiza which feels like both forever ago and just yesterday. To say that sam has done a helluva lot of good in this worlds would be the biggest understatement. She has turned her passion for running into a vehicle for social change, completing events like Run India in 2016 —a 3,200K run from the west to the east of India in an effort to raise funds for World Vision education initiatives — to a 222K non-stop foot race across the Himalayas at 6,000 meters above sea level — an event that had only been completed previously by one man. She's truly a one-of-a-kind individual. And, of note, Sam was actually a corporate lawyer with zero athletic background until she decided to make her endurance activity part of her life's work. I am blown away by her, and I know you will be, too. You'll hear all about it in the episode, but to quickly give you some background – eight amazing women (and two fabulous men to capture photos and video) spent three days hiking 55km with 2200m of elevation across three of the twelve parts of the Larapinta Trail led by Larapinta Culture, the only Aboriginal owned and operated touring company in the area. Jungala, the owner and an elder in the region, and his grandson Perrulle (along with Nick Fife, their mate who came to help out) gave us the most eye opening and immersive few days camping in the red dirt, walking through the oldest land formations in the world and sleeping under the shooting stars. I sat down with now three-time Seize the Yay guest Samantha Gash who organised the trip under the banner of her new female adventure group, Her Trails, and Jo Nevin (one of my amazing new friends from the adventure) to give you a little insight into what it was like. The 'Start with Why' movement was started by Simon Sinek to help people connect to their purpose and feel more inspired at work, by exploring the fundamental question of ‘WHY'. This successful movement affirmed that for people to be truly successful and happy in work, they need to understand the ‘WHY' behind it. With so much uncertainty, it has been easy to lose direction and disconnect from your purpose, your 'WHY'.  In this podcast, podiatrist Joe Brooks chats to Samantha Gash about her experience of and journey to finding her ‘WHY'. Samantha started running as a break from studying law to discover her ‘WHY'.  Little did she know those small steps would turn into a journey that has seen her run over 35,000km across every continent and raise approximately $1.3 million for charity while advocating for women's empowerment, social change and access to education.   Joe and Samantha chat about finding purpose, reconnecting to your WHY and how this impacts your career.

Australian Samantha Gash started running as a break from studying law. Little did she know those small steps would turn into a journey that has seen her run over 35,000km across every continent on Earth, and raise approximately $1.3 million for charity while advocating for women's empowerment, social change and access to education. Samantha took up running in 2008, entering the Melbourne Marathon as her first baptism of fire. As a rookie athlete, she ‘hit the wall' towards the end of the race, the fatigue nearly stopping her. She stumbled the last ten kms to the finish line with the help of a close friend who was also running. After taking herself beyond what she believed was possible, Sam had ventured into new territory that would become her new domain. In 2010 she took on the 4 Deserts Grand Slam, running four 250km ultra-marathons across the driest (Chile), windiest (China), hottest (Sahara) and coldest (Antarctica) deserts on Earth, carrying everything she needed to survive in a backpack. Samantha made history by becoming the first woman and the youngest person at the time to complete the Grand Slam of all four races in a calendar year. Her journey was captured for the big screen in the award-winning film Desert Runners. With an increasing desire to push the envelope, in 2011 Samantha entered a 222km non-stop run across the Himalayas, which had previously only been finished by one man. It was during this event that she realized she wanted to use her long-distance running for a greater purpose. And so began Samantha's transformation to social advocate. The next year, while working as a lawyer, Samantha ran 379km non-stop across Australia's Simpson Desert, which took 3.5 days and raised $33,000 for Save the Children Australia. Within two months of that run, Samantha helped organise a fundraising running event on behalf of Turia Pitt and Kate Sanderson – victims of the 2011 Kimberley ultra-marathon bushfire – a race that Samantha also ran in. Over $40,000 was raised to support the women's continued rehabilitation. Continuing her work for Save the Children, in September 2014, Samantha ran an average of 61km for 32 days straight across South Africa's Freedom Trail (1968km total) with UK runner Mimi Anderson, raising $55,000 for a South African initiative that increased access to feminine hygiene products and provided education on the importance of attending school. Then in 2016, as an ambassador for World Vision, Samantha ran from the west to the east of India – 3253km over 76 days. Through Run India, she raised close to $200,000 to fund six education-focused programs. She visited 18 World Vision-supported communities across the country, sharing previously untold stories and bringing together industry leaders to tackle barriers to children's education. Samantha has been twice recognized as a finalist in the Women's Agenda Leadership Awards. She has been selected as a delegate for the Australia India Youth Dialogue, and was also nominated for a Pride of Australia Medal. She is an ambassador for World Vision and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, using her platform to bring awareness to these causes. She was a competitor on the TV show Survivor where she met her partner Mark Wales. They welcomed Harry, their first child, in 2018. Find out more about her at www.samanthagash.com

Samantha Gash is an authentic storyteller, world-class athlete, social entrepreneur, and mother. To her, running is the mechanism that helps her contribute to causes larger than herself. Driven by social impact, she’s helped raise over 1.3 million dollars for causes including women empowerment and child access to education.   In this conversation, Samantha and Tina unpack the deep wisdom she’s learned over the years, and how lessons she learned as an athlete translate over into helping navigate life’s obstacles. Samantha touches on her expeditions in Australia and South Africa and completing the 4 Deserts Grand Slam– four 250K ultra marathons in which she was the first woman and youngest person to complete in one calendar year.  4 Lessons  Good ideas take time. Samantha encourages us to look inward at our intentions behind our ideas. We have to break them down to the core and discover the “why” behind why we do what we do. Our ideas won’t be perfect at first, they take time to change and grow.  Don’t let ego drive your life. Ego can burn and destroy you, Samantha says. It can consume what you’re doing and why, so you must keep it in check. Don’t be afraid to show parts of you that aren't perfect. It’s good for people to see rawness in you, and then see your growth. Ask yourself, “What can this experience be outside of myself?” Passion is about endurance. The word “passion” gets thrown around in the context of pursuing a job you love. But Samantha reminds us that the Latin root of passion means endurance. It’s about finding ways to get through tough moments. There are always going to be monumental setbacks, but you have to keep grinding. Don’t rush the process, take breaks, and look at your life with fresh eyes.  Change is always happening. Life isn’t static. For Samantha, COVID-19 changed her life overnight. Races halted, goals paused, traveling canceled. But she said she somehow was able to adapt to new habits without skipping much of a beat. She said since her life has normally always been filled with change, she’s become used to pivoting. Quarantine has allowed her more time with her son and husband as well as reminded her to go back to her roots as to why she began running in the first place.  Highlights “Don’t rush into things. Your body and mind take time to adapt. Things need time to organically build.” “I’m a realistic optimist. I’m good at saying, ‘this situation isn't optimal and I’m struggling, but how can I pivot that into something positive?’” “Maybe the adventure and running that I experience in ultramarathon environments are my vehicle, my mechanism for contributing to something bigger than myself.”   Resources: Samantha’s Podcast Samantha’s Instagram  Samantha’s Website  Samantha on the Rich Roll Podcast    Thank you to my wonderful sponsor Athletic Greens and Insidetracker for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast.   Athletic Greens is a simple and easy way to get 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole food source ingredients. I could fill a page just listing Samantha Gash’s achievements. In 2010, and in her first ultramarathon, Sam became the first female and youngest person to complete the Racing the Planet 4 Deserts Grand Slam, running 4 ultra-marathons across the driest, windiest, hottest and coldest deserts on Earth. That was followed in 2011 by a 222km non-stop race through the Indian Himalayas. It was during that run across the Himalayas that Sam decided to use her running for a greater purpose. Since then, she’s run 379km solo, non-stop across the Simpson Desert in Australia as well as 2,000km along South Africa’s Freedom Trail to raise funds and awareness for the work of Save the Children. Then in 2016, as an ambassador for World Vision, Sam set out on her most ambitious project to date; running across India. Over 76 days, she ran 3,253km from the west to the east of India and, in the process, raised close to $200,000 to fund 6 programs to improve access to education for children in India. Sam’s run was capture in an amazing documentary called ‘Run India’. In this conversation, Sam and I discussed: - the tipping point when Sam transitioned from running for herself to running for others, - what inspired the ‘Run India’ project as well as the impact it had on her, - how running has changed her as a person, - why she cringes at the word 'inspiration’, - her experience with the Imposter Complex, - the power of (and what it means to be) truly committed to a goal. If you were following our wedding last year, you probably saw the fun we had with our amazing wedding dance choreographer Jarryd Byrne who we then passed on to Samantha Gash and Mark Wales for their wedding. He very generously organised tickets for the four of us to the second episode of the new season of Dancing with the Stars on Channel 10 where he is the professional partner to Celia Pacquola and it was an absolute BLAST, it's such an amazing show to watch and to see it in studio was even more impressive. I was lucky to follow up a few days later with one of the judges and fellow professional dancer, Sharna Burgess, for this week's episode. Sharna is the fiery red head among the judges for this year but has also come from 12 seasons of Dancing with the Stars USA as a professional partner to a Backstreet Boy, an NBA player and everything in between, taking away the winning spot with Bobby Bones in season 27. Dancing since the age of five, she has lived and danced in the UK, the USA and now back home to Australia and is an absolute force to be reckoned with. She's open, honest and refreshing reminding us yet again that things are rarely an overnight success with lots of despair, hardship and challenge along the way. But her way to yay has led her to the life of her dreams and I loved having her on to chat through it all. Hope you enjoy! + Follow Sharna Burgess here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

Welcome back to the second episode we recorded over in the West during our quick visit to Perth. As you'll hear, her legal career would have been my dream career if business hadn't fallen into my lap and I am continually in awe of her resilience, open-mindedness and sense of social justice. While she too started out in corporate law at the same firm as two time Seize the Yay guest Samantha Gash for whom we were both recently bridesmaids, Amy shifted quickly towards the realm of international and humanitarian law to build one of the coolest careers I've encountered. Amy's first step out of corporate was a dramatic one into the United Nations as a prosecutor in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. From there, she has worked in East Timor, Cambodia and Liberia and developed a keen interest in military law in the process. On returning home to Australia to settle down with her husband and start a family, she has also joined the Army Reserves part time as a legal officer (now officially Captain Barber) and works full time as legal counsel for the Australian Red Cross so also has some insights into the bushfire relief work the organisation has been doing. (In her spare time, she teaches yoga in a women's prison - I mean, seriously). She is endlessly fascinating and I hope you enjoy as much as I did. + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

I want to share a couple of things that I learned and that I think will emphasize the unique needs of each athlete. Question: How many sweat glands do you have? Answer: Depending on how big you are, you’ll have anywhere between 1.5 and 5 million sweat glands on your body.   Question: There are two types of sweat glands, what are there names? Answer: There are actually two main types: eccrine and apocrine   Question: What do they do? Answer: Your eccrine glands are the ‘classic’ sweat glands that produce most of the sweat you can see when you train. They are tiny, numerous and are found almost everywhere on the body, although they are most concentrated on the palms, soles and face. Apocrine glands, on the other hand, secrete a slightly different type of sweat into a hair follicle which then makes its way up to the skin’s surface. Because of this, apocrine glands are bigger and are only found in your armpits and a few other places where hair grows. They secrete a thicker solution that is largely to blame for the distinctive odor associated with sweating. Many organised runs have been listed on www.reliefrun.com.au https://reliefrun.com.au/ Tim O'Donnell and Terrible Tuesday Workouts UCAN—specifically the company’s signature food product, SuperStarch. “SuperStarch is like a slow-drip IV, giving a constant, steady release of carbohydrates,” he says. O’Donnell also uses it during his training, especially on "Terrible Tuesdays." “When you’re finishing up running and hitting the water 35-45 minutes later, you need something quick in between that’s not going to give you that spike…it has to be energy that can get you through to the end of the session.” And O’Donnell will need all the energy he can when it comes to what he calls “Terrible Tuesday,” a hyperintensive mash-up of each triathlon discipline and a lifting session for good measure. “To prepare for an eight-hour race like the Ironman, you have to put your body in overload sometimes in training,” O’Donnell explains. “Honestly, I’ve found it’s better to do it all on one day like this, because when you do your intense biking, swimming and running sessions on different days, it becomes harder to recover and bounce back for the next one.” https://www.muscleandfitness.com/athletes-celebrities/pro-tips/how-top-us-triathlete-tim-o-donnell-prepares-ironman USA Triathlon Endurance Exchange https://www.enduranceexchange.com/event-schedule https://www.enduranceexchange.com/page/show/5472660-speakers https://www.enduranceexchange.com/page/show/5472658-session-descriptions Video of the Week: Heavy As Lead - From 300 Pounds to the Leadville 100 Heavy as Lead is the story of Jason Cohen, who went from 300lbs to just a short 7 years later found himself running the Leadville Trail 100. This is a special episode with a particularly urgent message. We have an amazing guest to tell us about an incredibly significant event happening over the January 18-19 weekend. The Australia Relief Run is an event that is being organized to occur all over the world.   Samantha Gash is an ultra runner and resident of Australia who set off a darn near viral event where runners can register for a virtual race to raise money for Red Cross to help victims of the Australian brush fires, which has had devastating death tolls, housing and habitat loss.   My daughter Morgan has been deeply concerned about the loss of wildlife including critically endangered species like the Koalas. She wants to become a zoologist and visit Australia in the near future. This past Sunday, my father-in-law (Patrick) casually brought to my attention a run being organized here in Denver called the Australia Relief Run.   As I looked into it I found that Runners World had picked up the story. I also researched the person who started the event and learned it was Samantha Gash. Samantha is a limit-breaking ultra-runner, a leadership speaker, and she has dedicated herself to humanitarian causes and now helping her home country in perhaps it's worst natural disaster in a century or more. So we published episode #213 on Saturday night, I learn about the Relief Run Sunday afternoon, I message Samantha that evening and we recorded Monday. I wanted to get this message out to our listeners, who are literally all over the world, and encourage you participate in this event this weekend. I'm putting links to the Relief Run website, the Runner's World article and Samantha's website. We're back a little earlier than planned, given what I'm sure wasn't quite the start to the year most of you envisioned. Our beautiful Australia is burning and the effects of the bushfires have been devastating and widespread. People have lost their lives, loved ones and homes as well as millions of wildlife and hectares of land being destroyed. It's been terrifying to see things unravel, especially as we have family in affected parts of Gippsland. If you've been directly impacted in any way, you have my deepest, most heartfelt sympathies. What has been uplifting to see though is the way the national and global communities have started to mobilise to offer as much support in as many ways as possible. Thank you all to everyone out there who is doing their bit in the best way they can. You'll probably have seen we've been doing bits and pieces with our businesses, particularly with the Relief Run that my dear friend Samantha Gash and husband Nic have started. With the universe working its magic, Sam and I had planned an escape to Bangalow with our wonderful friend Lisa Messenger who has also been working furiously with Food Bank Australia and we ended up in throes of a non-stop bushfire relief working bee. As we have been struggling against the density of information despite the brevity of social media, I thought a podcast episode would give us a longer form chance to discuss what's been happening but also to touch on some broader important themes on new beginnings, getting started and breaking through action paralysis. Lisa was our very first guest and Sammy joined last year, so it was a delight to get on the mics again to bump brains. The #2 most popular episode of Sparta Chicks Radio in 2019 was Samantha Gash on Inspiration, Impact & ‘Run India’ It’s easy in this day and age to think that one person - that you - can’t make a difference. But Sam has proved that wrong, time and time again. In her first ultramarathon in 2010, Sam became the first female and youngest person to complete the Racing the Planet 4 Deserts Grand Slam, running 4 ultra marathons across the driest, windiest, hottest and coldest deserts on Earth. That was followed in 2011 by a 222km non-stop race through the Indian Himalayas. It was during that run across the Himalayas that Sam decided to use her running for a greater purpose. Fast forward a few years and in 2016, as an ambassador for World Vision, Sam set out on her most ambitious project to date; running across India. Over 76 days, she ran 3,253km from the west to the east of India and, in the process, raised close to $200,000 to fund 6 programs to improve access to education for children in India. In this conversation, Sam and I discuss: - why disappointment is not a terrible emotion, - why she says she isn’t addicted to running and doesn’t need to call herself a runner, - why she cringes at the word 'inspiration' and - what it means to be truly committed to a goal. As promised last week, this week's guest is the beautiful second half of the greatest power couple going around. Hearing Mark's incredible story you'd be forgiven for thinking it'd be impossible to find a worthy match, but my dear Samantha Gash is just that and more. After meeting each other through mutual obnoxious eagerness in our first year of law studies, we've had a beautiful and enduring relationship for over a decade seeing each other through many different adventures, phases and careers. She may be small in stature but she's a big personality and even bigger inspiration to myself and many hundreds of thousands of others who her story has touched and it's no surprise our chat goes well over an hour and even closer to two so buckle in! Having united her early passions in a Performing Arts/Law degree, Sammy's love for the extracurricular has been around a long time seeing her work in Texas on capital cases, in Indigenous communities throughout Australia and everything in between. Sport was never her strong point, and yet, in the first display of what has become a characteristic love for discomfort and challenge she randomly undertook the 100km Oxfam challenge and has never looked back. From there, she has continued to defy even our wildest imaginations leaving law to pursue her career as an elite ultra marathon runner and incredible public speaker starting by becoming the youngest person and first female to complete the four desert series – 4 x 250km races across the hottest, windiest, coldest and driest deserts in the world. She then ran 1968km across South Africa and 3253km across India both to raise awareness and funds for causes close to her heart. Nic and I have been so lucky to be part of her crew on a few different adventures as you'll hear and she continues to open my mind every day. I could bang on forever but I'll let her tell you the rest! Enjoy!! + See show notes here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

This week's guest was on the very first list of potential guests that I ever made for the podcast and while our crazy schedules full of travel and adventure mean it's taken us a little while to coordinate, I'm SO excited to have Mark Wales on the show today and his beautiful fiancé Samantha Gash to follow next week. You might already know that Samantha is one of my dearest friends and soon to be bridesmaid and that Sam, Mark and their bubba Harry are pretty much family. And yet, somehow even after hearing both of their stories many times, I am still completely blown away by these powerhouses every single time and count myself so lucky to have them as friends. They are truly just another breed of human being and their stories add something very different to the yay we've seen so far. Starting off with Mark, you may know I'm almost as obsessed with the military as I am with crime (you can't help what makes you yay) and Mark was not just in the army but an SAS platoon commander in special ops – SO COOL!!!! Having his eyes on the prize from year 9 when he first heard about the SAS, he made his way through the gruelling training to join the SAS and ultimately complete tours in East Timor, Afghanistan, Lebanon and more. Impressive enough as that is alone, his stellar career in the military was just one of many chapters on Mark's way to yay who, after coming back to the academy to teach then retired and headed to New York. And not just for a gap year or gardening leave… oh no – he went to do an MBA at Wharton and become a Management Consultant at leading international firm, McKinsey. If you thought that was enough, you don't know Mark and Sam. I can't really imagine Mark in an office environment especially after being in combat and it turns out he felt much the same so tried out for Survivor Season 2 back in Australia. On the show, he met our beautiful Sammy and the two now have the most beautiful little boy, Harry, who absolutely lights up all our lives. On top of that, Mark also started his own business called Kill Kapture designing luxury streetwear to help the ex-military transition back into their lives with armour for their day. And quite understandably, he is now a coveted public speaker sharing his wisdom and knowledge from his amazing experiences along the way. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did! + See show notes here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

Sam might be small in stature, but that’s the only thing about her that’s small about her. An incredibly interesting human, Sam and I sat down in her house in the mountains, about an hour outside of Melbourne.

I could fill a page just listing Samantha Gash’s achievements. In 2010, and in her first ultramarathon, Sam became the first female and youngest person to complete the Racing the Planet 4 Deserts Grand Slam, running 4 ultra marathons across the driest, windiest, hottest and coldest deserts on Earth. That was followed in 2011 by a 222km non-stop race through the Indian Himalayas. It was during that run across the Himalayas that Sam decided to use her running for a greater purpose. Since then, she’s run 379km solo, non-stop across the Simpson Desert in Australia as well as the length of South Africa’s Freedom Trail (almost 2,000km) to raise funds and awareness for the work of Save the Children. Then in 2016, as an ambassador for World Vision, Sam set out on her most ambitious project to date; running across India. Samantha shines a light on the true meaning of leadership, high performance and the importance of being connected to your purpose.

Women’s Health Australia Uninterrupted Podcast

What does it take to run across an entire country for 77 days, non-stop? Just ask endurance athlete and motivational speaker Samantha Gash. A lapsed lawyer from Melbourne, she walked away from a promising corporate career for a brand new mission: Dedicating her life to running for social change, and raising awareness for causes she cares passionately about. At the age of 25, she was the first woman (and youngest person ever) to complete the world’s toughest endurance race, the Four Deserts Grand Slam, running four, 250km ultra-marathons in one calendar year. Then in 2016, she ran 3253km across India, raising more than $200,000 for World Vision’s health and education programs in the process. Over the past 18 months, her life has taken a completely different turn as she competed on Australian Survivor, and rediscovered a whole new love affair with running after giving birth to her first baby, Harry. In this incredibly inspiring interview, Sam shares her thoughts on life, love, motivation, mental toughness… and reveals her epic new running mission for 2019. “We are defined more by our response to something than what happens to us.” Samantha Gash Imagine running a 250 kilometer ultramarathon across the Atacama desert — one of the driest places on Earth — when your only legit running experience is a single ill-fated marathon attempt that left you humbly walking the last eight miles. That same calendar year, you race three more 250km ultramarathons to become the first female and youngest person to ever run and complete the 4 Desert Race Series Grand Slam, one of the world’s toughest and most prestigious endurance achievements imaginable. This is inspiring story of Samantha Gash – ultra-athlete extraordinaire, roll model, humanitarian, and just a really cool person.Discovering a previously unbeknownst acumen for endurance and a disposition for suffering unlocked a certain joy in Samantha, as well as a thirst for more. So the year following her 4 Deserts achievement, she conquered a 222km non-stop foot race across the Himalayas at 6,000 meters above sea level — an event that had only been completed previously by one man. That experience triggered a deep desire to leverage her running for humanitarian causes. So she got to work, running and raising money for causes she believed in. Among her accomplishments:* A 379km non-stop run across Australia’s Simpson Desert on behalf of Save the Children Australia;* A community run & fundraising event on behalf of podcast fave Turia Pitt and Kate Sanderson, victims of the Kimberley ultramarathon bushfire – a race in which Samantha also competed;* A 32-day, 1968km run across South Africa's Freedom Trail, also on behalf of Save The Children Australia; and* A 76-day, 3253 run across India from from Jaislamer, Rajasthan to Shillong, Meghalaya on behalf of World VisionAmidst the insanity of it all, she somehow managed to raise over $203,000 and counting for the aforementioned causes.Today we unpack Samantha's extraordinary, inspiring journey, blisters and all. This is a phenomenal conversation about Samantha’s transformation from someone with no athletic background into the inspiring ultra-athlete humanitarian she is today. From all the hardships and seemingly insurmountable setbacks and obstacles to the rare air she occupies today, it's a story about self-belief, purpose, perseverance and the call to service. But the core theme of today's conversation is the close kinship that exists between passion and suffering. And the magic that transpires when you have the willingness to entertain the impossible, step outside your comfort zone and courageously leap through fear into the abyss.Sam is an absolute delight. It was a privilege to spend a few hours with her and boyfriend Mark Wales, a badass Australian Special Ops Commander she met when they were both contestants on Australian Survivor. You're gonna love this one. Promise.Peace + Plants,P.S. – You may recall that Samantha's name came up in my podcast with Jennifer Steinman way back in March 2015 (RRP 133). Jennifer is the filmmaker behind Desert Runners which profiled 4 people over the course of a year as they tackled this 4 Deserts Grand Slam. Samantha is one of the featured athletes in that amazing movie. See it if you haven’t already and in case you missed it, have a listen to my podcast with Jennifer.
