As retirement age gets pushed back later and later, and life expectancy continues to expand, women 40 and older are looking to make the most of the next season of their lives by resuming or beginning new vocations and fulfilling deferred dreams.Nada Jones, the Founder of Liberty Road, saw the need to support and create community for women in this demographic. In this episode, Lindsay and Nada discuss the importance of staying relevant and acquiring new skills in a rapidly changing landscape, and how Liberty Road aims to provide technical training and resources to help women in midlife remain competitive. This conversation provides valuable insights into the journey of entrepreneurship and the specific needs of women in midlife. It highlights the importance of finding purpose and meaning in this stage of life, and offers practical advice and inspiration for women looking to start or grow their own businesses.Key Takeaways:Building a platform or business doesn't always require a detailed business plan. Sometimes, it can evolve organically based on the needs and interests of the community.Patience is key when building a platform or business. It takes time to see results and to pivot when necessary. It's important to listen to the community and adapt accordingly. By understanding their needs and desires, you can create a platform that truly serves them.Creating a sense of community is crucial, both online and offline. Providing opportunities for connection, support, and collaboration can greatly enhance the experience for members.Quotes:“I think women over 40, we're kind of the most boring diversity issue right now. No one really wants to tackle age, and no one wants to tackle women in menopause. It's not sexy.” (16:47 | Nada) “I might need to work until I'm 70. Retirement age is changing; we're living longer. That means we have to have more money to last us longer in retirement. So we have to start to tackle these things for working women and non-working women in this midlife stage.” (20:24 | Nada) “If we can teach women in this demographic in this stage of life, if we can give them the tools they need to go out and do the things they're each respectively called to do, half the world's problems will be taken care of. This isn't a time to be stepping back, it's a time to be stepping up.” (24:08 | Nada) “It may have looked like I was living the dream, but just be really clear about what that dream looks like.” (43:12 | Nada)“Just start. By the time you iterate for all the changes that you will need to make, because it's usually not exactly what you, when you started, it usually doesn't end up being exactly what it was in the beginning, right? You need to make room for all those iterations. You will have moved the needle so much just by starting. You will surprise yourself.” (47:57 | Nada)Connect with Nada Jones:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisislibertyroad/If you like what you're hearing, please leave a rating or review at https://ratethispodcast.com/dearfoundher You can now work with Lindsay 1:1 to build and monetize your community through the same method she used to grow and scale her business. Julie of @thefiftyist is a silver-haired, pro-age content creator and writer who is having an absolute blast on social media at 56. After working in education for many years, Julie left her position for more creative endeavors and found herself battling a second breast cancer (after 20 years) diagnosis. After being derailed for almost two years, she emerged from that period with a sense of gratitude and drive to have more fun while stacking the health odds in her favor by eating and living as healthy as possible. Her personal journey spilled over into all areas of her life, including Instagram. Julie found herself sharing her discoveries in clean makeup and self-care products. Today she is creating content with like-minded brands and writing a book, and guest blogging for Tangled Silver – an online magazine aimed specifically at women with silver hair. Although entering the world of social media in her fifties has been a challenge, it has allowed Julie the creative space to speak her truths for the first time in her life. Her mantra, 'Do things that scare you!'Liza of @hi_ho_silver_liza started an Instagram account documenting her transition to gray and in the process met a digital community of women called the Silver Sisters who she shares, "filled her journey with love, laughter, support, and friendship." At the start of lockdown, she decided to grow out her natural hair color which coincided with the London agency that represented her as a model closing their doors. This new chapter offered an opportunity to buy land next to her home and open the animal sanctuary she had always dreamt about. She is now the loving guardian to six beautiful sheep, two rescue dogs from Bosnia and Greece, and three rescue cats! After three years of growing her natural hues, the opportunity to return to her 25-year modeling career presented itself, this time as a silver-haired, 51-year-old changing the narrative about aging and beauty. Liza says she is first and foremost a mama to two incredible human beings and has been happily married for 30 years. In this episode, Nada sits down with Julie and Liza to discuss their experiences with going silver and with social media. Both did not start their Instagram accounts with the intention of becoming content creators; however, by being present and speaking their truths, their platforms grew. Julie outlines that the first step to conquering social media is having fun and engaging with your followers. Liza combats the falsehood that you should dye your hair, “because you are worth it.” She shares that by allowing her silver hair to grow, found confidence in herself in the new beautiful chapter that is midlife. If you want a good read, we have lots of recommendations this week! JJ Elliott is an advertising copywriter with a degree in English from UCLA. She lost her mother to suicide as a teenager and spent over two years volunteering on the suicide hotlines in LA. One of the reasons she wanted to write this book is because she finds herself increasingly frustrated by the way suicide is treated in print and on-screen, as a mystery to be solved rather than a multi-layered, complex mental health situation that can rarely be boiled down to one specific "reason."A native of Northern California, JJ now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two teenage kids, and two poorly trained bulldogs. She loves to read, drink wine, play tennis, and eat cheese. There Are No Rules For This is her first novel. In this episode, Nada sits down with JJ to discuss her newly published book. After ten years of crafting the story, JJ decided not to go with a traditional publisher and shares why that was an important decision in telling this very personal story. She helps us understand a hybrid publishing model and explains the benefits of choosing that path. JJ advises aspiring writers to join a writing community and to reach out to authors they admire. BURU was founded in 2013 by Morgan Hutchinson after she realized that there was a fashion void for new moms. Today she designs and produces responsibly-made bespoke pieces from her downtown LA micro-factory. Morgan began her career in Manhattan and managed to build a successful lingerie company called Passport Panties before moving to Beijing with her now husband, Brett. Just weeks after moving back to the US from China, Morgan became a mother and struggled to find clothing that would withstand the demands of new motherhood. While she didn't want to sacrifice style, she needed pieces that were comfortable, washable and functional. Her BURU designs transcend generations, seasons, and phases of motherhood. In this episode, Nada sits down with Morgan to discuss how she launched her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer. She shares how she, along with her business partner and husband, has chosen the slower route of building their brand and how that benefits their long-term goals of owning the entire manufacturing to retail cycle. Community has been at the core of BURU's growth. Whether on social media or in person connections, Morgan has brought her loyal following together by giving them access to her designs through her BURU Busses; vans made into mobile shops!Whether you're a mother or not, you will appreciate Morgan's message of empowering women to find their personal style and own it.
