Does God Exist? by Christopher Kaczor: 8. Can Reason Alone Show that God is Love?

Scripture famously teaches that, “God is love” (1 John 4:16). But Aquinas thinks this same belief can be shown to be true on the basis of reason alone. If we define love as willing the good of the other for their sake, and if God the First Cause wills the good of human beings for their sake, then God must love human beings. For Thomas whatever God does is also what God is. So if God is loving, then God is love. Moreover, Thomas believes that God so loved the world that Jesus was sent as the fullness of revelation of God. This is a “mystery of faith” that goes beyond what philosophy can show to be true. Thomas thinks that Jesus is fully divine and also fully human. He has both full divine nature and full human nature.  catholicthinkers.org https://youtu.be/2wVK0Df3U6E

In this third lecture of nine, we look at what Thomas Aquinas says about God, faith, and reason, in the beginning of the Summa contra Gentiles. For Thomas, it is a false dilemma to pit faith against reason, as if we had to choose between them. Rather, Thomas holds that the best way forward is a faithful reason and a reasonable faith. Thomas holds that we can learn something about God by way of negative theology whereby we deny things about God so as to have a less inaccurate view of God. We also examine various challenges that can be raised against Aquinas's views. catholicthinkers.org https://youtu.be/yaQfc_LxNjk

It’s a dream-come-true moment for Thomas and Tranna as they welcome rockstar, writer, producer, and queer icon Linda Perry! From mega success in the 90s, fronting the band 4 Non Blondes, to writing and producing some of the biggest hits of the early 00s for Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, and Pink, Perry is back behind the mic for the first time in 15 years with her new song, “The Letter.” For Thomas and Tranna, talking to Perry is an opportunity to learn the stories behind the music that shaped them as teens and what it was like to be a queer artist in the 90s, a time when being gay could end your career. Plus it’s a very special “Obsessions,” as T and T are joined by Sean Ross and Derek Aubichon from the brilliant podcast, Miss Thing!

We all have a role to play in the decade of our lives to reach the 2030 SDG vision. Procurement professionals though have a unique opportunity controlling about $8.3T of world trade in materials flow and services annually. In one of the most inspiring episodes to date, Thomas Udeson, Chief Procurement Officer at Bayer and Co-Founder of the Sustainable Procurement Pledge (SPP.Earth) chats with Sheri Hinish (SupplyChainQueen) about his journey, the power of uniting under the SDGs for climate action and sustainability, and how procurement professionals are uniquely positioned to make this happen. For Thomas, it started with a global curiosity hearing his father talk about shipments. He eloquently describes that "supply chains are the pulse of our society and humanity. Supply chains make things happen and what makes the world the great place it can become. And if you work in a supply chain you naturally get exposed to the beauty of people and diversity." The Sustainable Procurement Pledge (SPP) was born out of the climate strikes in late 2019. Thomas fundamentally believes that we have everything to make a meaningful impact and change. The SPP builds on commitments at the individual level.  The Sustainable Procurement Pledge (SPP) is a pro-bono community of those committed to embedding sustainability in to their procurement practices - and sharing knowledge and tools of how to do so. Did you know it’s scientifically proven that you can’t feel scared if you’re singing? Such is the impact of sound and the emotions it triggers in us. In the latest episode of Let’s Talk Mercedes, the Mercedes-Benz podcast, show host Sarah Elsser meets two men whose passion for sound is central to their lives; Mercedes-Benz sound designer Thomas Küppers, and Felix Jaehn, superstar DJ, music producer and Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador. Felix gives us an insight into his daily routine and reveals the creative journey his biggest songs made from humble bedroom beginnings to worldwide dance anthems. For Thomas, the creative process is different but no less important as he explains the challenges faced in developing a vehicle’s everyday sounds. Just think of the sound the indicator makes when you want to turn a corner; it’s familiar, and yet slightly different in each model. But how do you continue to engineer the perfect sound experience, when the growth in e-mobility means vehicles are quieter than ever?

We did make a few changes but none of these impact the flow of the story. If this is your first time hearing about Rikki the Mongoose, prepare for a very dramatic, exciting story about bravery, and putting others first! CLOSER THAN A BROTHER Today’s readings are Jeremiah 3 – 4 and John 11.  We are reading from the New Living Translation.  Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.” (Jn 11:16 NLT)   The Twin wants to die.  He wants to lay down his life with Jesus, someone he loves like a brother.  He doesn’t want to diefor Jesus, rather, he just wants to die with Him.  But Thomas, the twin, doesn’t understand yet, that it’s going to take Someone else’s death, and resurrection, for him to see, understand, and really experience resurrection life himself. For Thomas it’s going to take more, even more than seeing Lazarus die and rise from the dead.  He would need to see Jesus, himself, die and rise again, before he would believe and experience the life that he wanted.     What Thomas learned was what we must all see and learn that we cannot, by our own good intentions, arrive at the place that we need to be.  Thomas was full of good intentions and brave declarations of loyalty –  “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.” But Thomas had to learn that all the virtue and promises, and what we think we ourselves can bring, cannot overcome the reality of our own brokenness, the four-day smell of the flesh, and the certain reality of the grave. What we need is a better twin than Thomas.  We need Someone who can do for us, what we cannot do for ourselves. We need a twin who will triumph over death by actually dying for us, thereby reconciling us to God, on a cross. And we need Someone who has emerged from the tomb, and saved us with his life – for our here and now.  That’s what Thomas would eventually get and what we need to understand. He didn’t see it at first, but soon he would see and believe that his Friend, Jesus, would stick closer than a brother, even closer than a twin.  And that Brother would make a way for him, and us, and for all who believe, to come out of the grave, and be freed from the grave clothes of past shame, regret, fears, and doubts.   This Brother of ours calls us by name, to come out from the grave.  He sets us free into life – never to die again.  Though Thomas wanted to die he would soon learn that his Brother, Jesus, had died for him, so that he might live.   Jesus is closer than a brother – even a twin.  He has called you by name, to rise from the grave.  He has thrown off your grave clothes so that you can move forward in this life with hope, joy, strength, and life.

He was the former CEO of Global Investment Management at Citigroup and Former Treasurer at John Hancock Insurance Company. Thomas W. Jones is currently the Founder and senior partner of venture capital investment firm TWJ Capital and author of the new book From Willard Straight to Wall Street: A Memoir.  Podcast Highlights   Who is Thomas W. Jones?    Thomas W. Jones was on the cover of Newsweek in 1969 as an iconic revolutionary while studying at Cornell. As a student, Thomas felt that America was at a crossroads and that his generation was tasked with the job of raising the price of oppression. Due to his effort and the effort of countless others, America chose to embrace the spirit of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and has made significant progress over the last 50 years towards equality. In a certain way, Thomas’s life story and career in business is like a microcosm of the story of the growth and development of America as a whole.   Did the fight look like what you thought it would?   Thomas was pleasantly surprised when America took the path of opening up opportunity instead of the path of oppression. He believed the toughest fight would be in the business world and he figured that he would have almost no chance at success, but he needed to try. He had to approach business in a way that he provided his own psychological support, because he knew he wasn’t going to receive any from the outside. He discovered that if you actually deliver a true 100% commitment, there is a large gap over time between the people who are delivering only 95%. The 5% gap seems small but it compounds over the years and people start to notice. For Thomas, this meant people in the upper echelons of business recognizing that he was getting the job done and eventually taking him on in a mentorship type of relationship.   Where does your motivation and fortitude come from?   It takes a certain level of self belief and self confidence to take on tough challenges. For Thomas, his confidence came from his experience in school. At that time, the philosophy of school in dealing with a gifted child was to accelerate them, and that meant that Thomas had skipped two grades. This meant that he was much younger than his peers and once he had entered high school he encountered a number of bullies. It was then that he decided that he wouldn’t let others define who he was. That self possession developed into the mentality that even if he was facing insurmountable odds, Thomas might as well try to get it done. Most people never figure out what they are capable of because they never actually put 100% into trying to be their best. You can never know what you can do until you give 100% effort. It’s a wonderful gift that you can give to yourself to learn what your highest potential is. When you learn what your capacity is, you will be able to channel and master it, and you will find arenas where you can give 100% and be successful. Thomas’s faith discipline has been another crucial element. Even in the midst of a crisis, praying and trying to see the good in the situation allowed Thomas to continue to fight. Life is going to have times of trial, and having s

This week we see the same old fears that every human has without the eternal truth of Easter. What we empirically experience in life is more than evidence. It’s all that we know. But that leads to a reality like that of Thomas, namely, one without peace. Yet out of pure grace and power Jesus made his resurrection credible. For Thomas and the rest of his disciples, Jesus tied this eternal truth to what they could see and touch with their senses. When we doubt our doubts, faith in the resurrection is not only plausible, it accomplishes the impossible. And that faith in the resurrected Savior provides forgiveness and peace—the basis for a truly fearless life and for grace without end.

Whether you are looking to move to Denver or Denmark, there are a lot of things you need to take into consideration before moving to a new city.  When you are moving to a new city, everything is new and exciting, but it can also be a little scary. Preparing will help you get past that insecurity the unfamiliarity of a new city can bring. And overspending is almost always a result of under planning.  One of our awesome listeners has been thinking of making a move to a new city and asked us for some tips on how he can prepare. Thomas has been planning a move to Denver and will share some tips and resources he in today’s episode.  Financial Prerequisites  Before you move to a new city, you want to have your finances in order. Get your debt situation under control and work on your credit score. If you are planning on renting, landlords look at that very seriously when considering a tenant.  Make sure you have a job when you get there. If you’re moving because of a job, get a relocation bonus. ASK FOR IT! You’d be surprised what you can get if you ask.  Creating a moving budget. This will show you how much money you will need to save up for all expenses including broker fees, security deposits, moving companies, possible storage, furniture and at least the first month’s rent.  Step 1: Choosing the new location  If you’re relocating because of a job or school, either for yourself or a spouse, apparently you’re skipping this step. For Thomas, he just wants to leave Iowa so he can have a new place to call home. Start by researching locations you might be interested in. Figure out what you want out of a new location and make a priority list with value scores.  Don’t get caught up in what you might do when you get there. Make a list of real priorities and things you truly value. Maybe you don’t have a car, so you want a city to be walkable. You love hiking and the outdoors, so you need to find a place with the nice weather most of the year.  Since it is more likely than not that you’ll need a job when you move, some of your top priorities should be:    * What’s my industry like in this city?  * What’s the probability that I can get a good job?  * What’s the cost of living index, and will my likely salary be able to manage it?  * Will I have to downgrade my current lifestyle because the new city won’t let my dollars stretch as far?    Compare your cost of living now to what it will be on the move along with your new salary. Thomas has been using Numbeo to compare the cost if living between Des Moines to Denver. He figured out he will need $4,837 each month to get the same standard of living I’d get on $4,000 in Des Moines. Also, check out tax rate differences. If you have children or plan to have kids, then you need to consider schools and daycare costs in the area. Once you have all the info you need, start scoring cities you’re interested in based on your priorities.Check out city-data websites, forums, and Reddit to get the low-down from locals. Thomas has found this pretty helpful except for those few people who don’t want any newcomers in town. Once you have your shortlist, visit a city or two if you can. It’s probably not feasible for most people to visit every potential city, but if you can try to Air BnB it up for a few days in your top pick. You can tour some apartments and get a feel for the place. Thomas did this in Denver, and that was fantastic. It solidified the decision for him. Step 2: Start preparing Moving sucks, so make a plan for everything that needs to be done way ahead of time and work on it in little chunks. Pare down your life and get rid of stuff you don’t need or use. You are starting a new life so leave some of the old behinds. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this special episode of the Cash Flow Diary podcast, which is a little rough and raw as we try out some new recording technologies (plural), we have three guests from to diverse areas of the world that all share the same focus: Investing in laundromats! Guests Cisco and Doris Calderon are in California earning impressive cashflow with theirs; Thomas Landenburger does the same in Italy!  Thomas wasn’t always a real estate entrepreneur. He attended college in Wisconsin and then entered the Marine Reserves. After seeing the hottest desserts and coldest winters in Wisconsin, he left the Marines and hit the road to travel the world. He met a woman in Greece, got married and opened a pastry shop. Then he opened a bed and breakfast in far-off lands, sort of like the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. Thomas was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug pretty hard, which brought him to opening his first laundromat in Italy.  As for Cisco and Doris, their path was a little different. They met in a dance class at Cal Poly Pomona, fell in love and headed to Arizona. Facing some struggles they decided to return to California. Because they were in the tech industry, which bottomed out in about 2008-ish – which also meant they no longer had good jobs – they were forced to look at their future a little differently. Like they’d have to create their own future through being entrepreneurs. The couple decided that owning laundromats would be the ticket to success. (But it wasn’t an easy decision, according to Doris, because Cisco is a full-speed-ahead kind of guy and she’s an on-the-edge-of-the-cliff-of-fear sort.) So why laundromats? Because they serve people who need them very badly. In California, the Calderons’ customers don’t have a washer and dryer at home. For Thomas laundromats make sense because in Italy dryers are a luxury item. He says it’s funny to him because he feels like he’s changing the tradition in Italy. He adds that even little old ladies who have always hung their laundry out on the line are using his dryers! If you want to know how to open a laundromat, this is the episode for you. You’ll enjoy the personal stories from our guests. You’ll even learn what it cost them each to start their first laundromats, plus the differences between the businesses. You might want to reach out to these individuals through Facebook. Learn more. LISTEN NOW.

It’s the time of year to reflect on the past twelve months and set goals for the new year. What does figure skating have to do with it? Tune in to find out. At LMM we prefer the word “goals” to “resolution.” Resolution has almost come to mean failure in three weeks time. We think framing our resolutions as goals will help us reach them. Sometimes you just have to trick your brain! Why January 1? You can see the appeal. Everyone likes a clean slate and the slate is never cleaner than it is on January 1. But what if you woke up with a hangover and despite resolving to eat more healthfully, you order breakfast from McDonald’s? Are you going to wait 364 days to try again? Of course not. You don’t have to wait for a certain day to change a habit. Year End Review Rather than making the same old tired resolutions, which at a certain point become traditions, look back at the year that just passed. What would you have liked to do better? What did you not manage to get to at all that you still want to pursue? If you did achieve some goals, what helped you to do so? By looking back at this things, we can better craft goals for the new year and put systems in place to help us reach them. Day, Week, Month If the goals are too vague, “save money,” lose weight,” they are hard to track and hard to work towards. Each day, week, and month should have things to do in order to reach the end goal. If you want to save money, how much money? If you want to save $1000 to start an emergency fund, you can have a daily goal of not buying coffee on your way to work. You can have a weekly goal of bringing lunch from home just three of five days a week (because you want some wiggle room or you’ll get sick of it and give up). You can have a monthly goal of cutting your grocery bill by 20%. Any goal you set for yourself should have a timeline and a deadline. Marking off time in smaller chunks like day, week, and month helps you to move forward and track your progress. If you get to the end of the day, week, or month, and haven’t achieved what you set out to, you can reassess before much larger chunks of time have passed so you’re not content with giving up and waiting for that clean slate of January 1 to come around again. Priority(ies) Priority: “Something that is more important than other things and that needs to be done or dealt with first.” That definition makes perfect sense. A priority is the most important thing. So how can you have more than one? You can’t but somehow, we all do. And that’s why so many of us fail to achieve our priority because we spread our focus across multiple priorities. This year make it a goal to do almost nothing. But do a small number of things that matter. Those two statements might seem contradictory, but not as contradictory as having more than one priority. Some Goals Can Be Fun! Not all of your goals have to be a slog. Saving money and losing weight, while wonderful things to do that will reward you in many ways for many years, are not really very fun things to do. So pick at least one goal that is fun to do. For Thomas, it was to have more fun after work. A lot of us can probably relate to this. You come home from work and make dinner, tidy up, pay bills, watch TV. Except for making dinner, for some of us at least, none of those things are fun. So Thomas signed up and paid for, an ice skating class. A goal like this can kill a few birds; the original of doing more fun stuff after work, because another friend has signed up, Thomas gets to spend more time socializing, and skating is good exercise, although I know he was already doing pretty well in that area. If you can find a way to wrap up a few goals into one, you’ll get more done in less time. No Is A Complete Sentence Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

For Thomas, he wanted to see the nail prints in Jesus' hands and the slash of the spear in His side. The other disciples saw Him and described what they experienced when He came to them behind closed doors, but Thomas just couldn't take it in. He would not let his mind wrap around the idea that Jesus could overcome death even though he saw Him raise others from the dead. But what about you? Will you need to see Jesus bodily before you believe? I hope not because at His next coming it will be too late. His next coming ushers in the final battle and the resurrection of all His faithful followers. Those left behind will find conditions pretty deplorable. His Spirit will not remain and hopelessness will be the new catch phrase for those who do not go with Him to paradise. today's scriptures Today's Bible reading plans include: Ready - John 20:11-29 Set - Jeremiah 36; John 20 Go! - Jeremiah 26, 35-36; John 20

Consider the first pima pars of the Summa. Thomas’ aim is to write to beginners and offers a deep and wide view of Christian theology to priests in training who will be serving people over the years to come with biblical truth in an accessible way. For Thomas, holy teaching or sacra doctrina is identical with sacra scriptura. Thomas believes the theologian’s task is to illumine the Scriptures, not to add to them. He immediately addresses who God is and teaches that the theologian is to talk about everything only as it relates to God. He offers a lengthy analysis of the doctrine of the Trinity and is most famous for describing the distinction between divine processions and divine missions. Consider that the divine processions are internal within the Godhead and divine missions are external and amongst God’s creatures. In De Potintia, Thomas states, “The early doctors of the faith were compelled to discuss matters of faith on account of the insistence of heretics. Thus Arius thought that existence from another is compatible with the divine nature, wherefore, he maintained that the Son and Holy Spirit, whom Scripture describes as being from another, are creatures. In order to refute this error the holy Fathers had to show that it is not impossible for someone to proceed from the Father and yet be consubstantial with him, inasmuch as he receives from him the same nature the Father has.” Consider John 5:26 as it states, “For just as the Father has life in himself, thus he has granted the Son to have life in himself…” In Summa Contra Gentiles Thomas writes, “It is useful for the human mind to exercise itself with such reasons, however weak they are, provided there be not presumptuous attempt to comprehend or demonstrate. For the ability to perceive something of the highest realities, if only with feeble, limited understanding, gives the greatest joy… In accord with this thought, St. Hilary declares in his book, On the Trinity, speaking of this sort of truth: In faith, set out, go forward, persevere. And though I may know that you will not attain the end, still I shall praise you for your progress. He who pursues the infinite with reverent devotion, even though he never attains it, always profits nonetheless from advancing forward. But in penetrating this secret, in plunging into the hidden depths of the birth unlimited [the generation of the Son of God by the unbegotten God the Father], beware of presumptuously thinking you have attained a full understanding. Know, rather, that this is incomprehensible.” Thomas examines God’s will, predestination, election, and creation as they relate to God and teaches us about how we then can continue to live with God.

We all experience God differently. In the sense, that sometimes it is easier and other times more difficult to sense his presence. Mary "saw the Lord" when he spoke her name. But for the ten disciples it took seeing the suffering and wounding in the life of another. For Thomas, he had to feel the suffering himself. Nevertheless, the end result was the same... they all saw Jesus.
