Why settle for corporate ‘mission statements' when you can spark a movement? Thomas Kolster has made it his life's work to help Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, and governments discover exactly who they can help their audiences become. As the founder of the Goodvertising Agency, a recognized global thinker at the intersection of marketing, business, and sustainability, and author of two provocative books—Goodvertising and The Hero Trap—he challenges companies to stop obsessing over their “why” and focus instead on empowering people to own their own transformations. A frequent speaker at TEDx and SXSW, a judge at D&AD and Cannes Lions, and a vocal critic on climate issues, Thomas believes “purpose” isn't about being a savior but a catalyst. Whether he's advising Meta, Adidas, or IKEA, his mission remains the same: deliver authentic impact by making your audience, not your brand, the hero.

Think about the last advert you saw. Was it the first or the 100th time you saw it? Today, the average person sees around 5,000 to 10,000 ads a day - a significant jump from the 500 ads a day in the 1970s. So, with all these ads - from social media to cable TV - vying for our attention, it's time for a reckoning. In this episode of 2050 Investors, we ask: has advertising been a force for good, or has it contributed to patterns of over-consumption? Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua on a journey through the fascinating world of advertising, exploring its evolution from ancient practices to modern strategies that shape consumer behaviour and cultural identity. Kokou also examines the rapid growth of this multi-billion-dollar industry, its future amid rapid developments in AI and, of course, the pros and cons of an industry credited with creating some of the world's most iconic slogans, jingles and moments. Later in the episode, Kokou welcomes guest Thomas Kolster, a leading marketing and sustainability expert and author of Goodvertising. Thomas shares his unique insights on how advertising can shift from a consumer-driven model to a purpose-driven one, emphasising the importance of aligning brand values with consumer ethics. He discusses the challenges brands face in distinguishing genuine efforts from greenwashing and how to authentically engage with socially conscious consumers. There's certainly something for everyone in this episode!About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. “The ultimate proof point is answering the question… who can you help people become?” In this episode we speak to the inspirational Thomas Kolster, author of The Hero Trap and Founder and Creative Director of Goodvertising. Thomas has been championing sustainability in the advertising and marketing industry for over a decade - he tells us that when he wrote his first book, Goodvertising, back in 2012, no one in ‘the industry' was really interested in what he had to say - his main audience were those already embracing sustainability. However, jump a decade forward - and he spends his time consulting and sharing his wisdom with leading brands and agencies around the world. There's so much to glean from this insightful conversation - Thomas explains how when it comes to purpose and the role brands play in people's lives - they've lost their way. He tells us how most purpose statements are just too broad, that purpose is just not having the same effect - and how too much time is spent by brands and organisations naval gazing, rather than considering the real challenges people face and what really motivates and drives people to change. This leads us on to discuss what Thomas refers to as ‘transformative brands' - those brands that really help people to change their behaviours, and rather than the brands positioning themselves as the ‘Hero' - they instead are the facilitators, creating positive impact and behaviour change for their audiences. We boil down to the key point that realistically, it's very challenging for organisations or brands to drive change - where change really lies is with each and every one of us. We are the heroes! How do you feel about the word purpose?Does it light you up, make you feel aligned and on fire to make a difference?Or does it leave you feeling a little disconnected and wanting to change the subject? For me, I've always been in the latter camp.I've always understood the need for clarifying purpose in a directional sense. Who are we as an individual or collective, where we're going and how we get there in a way that aligns. After that point, to be honest, my skin starts to crawl a little. That's usually the point where it starts getting into grand statements. Big decisive yet also vague commitments about ‘helping people' or ‘making the world a better place'. Bizarre pictures of happy people and animals holding hands. You get the picture.Which is weird, because I've spent my whole career building ideas, influencers, movements and brands to drive a specific conversation. A specific purpose. So I've never been able to figure out why I found the whole topic so uncomfortable. That is until I came across my guest today.Today's Guest Thomas Kolster is an adviser to Fortune 500 companies, author of two best selling books, TED speaker and frequenter of more media appearances than I can list. His first book ‘Goodvertising - Creating advertising that cares' created a movement that looked at how purpose can be used to unlock the world-bettering power of brands. However it's his second and most recent book that caught my attention. It's called ‘The Hero Trap – how to win in a post-purpose market by putting people first'. In this book he literally takes a hatchet to his earlier beliefs. Now, other than just being a big fan of anyone that can publicly, unapologetically and enthusiastically change their mind. It was one of the very first lines that had me hooked.“Screw your purpose, who can you help me become?”It's that last question ‘Who can you help me become?' That's the backbone of our entire conversation today. Welcome to another episode of the DNA Of Purpose Podcast, and the last episode for 2021. A year that has been defined by a way of thinking that we at Future Crunch call the Adaptability Quotient. With that in mind, I want to share a few words that sum a year of Adaptability for Future Crunch. This has been a year where life has happened, in all its ups and downs, and through it all, every single one of us, did what we do best. We adapted, gained survival skills, expanded our horizons, and harnessed the strength to overcome one of the greatest challenges of our time. We grew in our pursuit to live a purposeful life lined with meaning. We acknowledged that with the full force of the outside world, just how lucky we are to be here, and to have the chance to experience life, in all of its nuances, all of its unfairness, all of its beauty. We accepted that none of us know what's coming next, and yet we had the ability to face it. To transform it into something that's of benefit for people, and our planet. That it was an opportunity to grow ourselves, our business... and perhaps even learn to love both the science and magic of change. As we move forward we have so many reasons to be excited - it doesn't matter where you start - embracing the amateur mindset, realising our opinion has room to evolve, or just remembering - that we are remarkable, and we are built for this. This is in our DNA. We are never too old, and we are never too young, to set out on an adventure, to try one new thing.Overall in 2022, We have it in us, to be stronger, smarter and kinder. So Let's do it better this time around. Let's keep stepping into our purpose acknowledging that if we are ever lost in this complex and crazy, just remember this one thing: collaboration always trumps genius!I know that for me this podcast would not be possible without the power of collaboration, and today's guest is another partner in purpose, I am proud to introduce. His name is Thomas Kolster and he is a marketing activist on a mission to make business put people and the planet first. Thomas is the founder and director of The Goodvertising Agency, and one of the pioneers in shaping brands for good. He's an internationally recognised keynote speaker who's appeared in more than 70 countries at events like TEDx, SXSW, D&AD & Sustainable Brands; and is a columnist for the Guardian, Adweek, The Drum and several other publications, as well as regularly judging at international award shows such as Cannes Lions and D&AD.Today we will be talking about Thomas's latest book which is called The Hero Trap. In the book, Thomas takes a hatchet to his earlier beliefs and warns brands about purpose: The essence of the book's message is that purpose is not a promotional stunt and the brand is never the hero. Purpose is all about the people, and the people are the DNA Of Purpose. This is why we need to put the people first, and make them the hero. From there a brand can build purpose. His belief is that a large majority of brands get stuck in what he calls the hero trap.Thomas believes that brands need to focus on the promise of transformation. ‘Who can you help me become?' is the one essential question you need to be asking and acting on to chart a new course for your brand, changing behaviours at scale and unlocking sustainable growth that benefits all. Thomas heralds the beginning of a new post-purpose era, where brands will be seen as villains if they don't put people's dreams, aspirations and creativity first. Before signing off, we will be on air on Wednesday the 13th of January, by which time I will be a married lady and coming back to the podcast Mrs Rebecca Maklad. New year, a new era and a year that I hope is the best one yet. I wish all of you a merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season full of love, light and happiness. He talks to us about joining the industry with dreams of helicopters and Ogilvy's Chateau, frustration, getting brand purpose all wrong, the problem when megalomanic brands try to do good, Simon Sinek's self-glorifying exercises, dinosaurs, what he really thinks of Patagonia, consuming Carlsberg and playing Lego (simultaneously, of course), where to get an evasive cheap pint in Copenhagen and bucket loads more. ///// Follow Thomas on Twitter and LinkedIn Here's his website Check out his books: The Hero Trap Goodvertising And if you're gasping for a pint in Copenhagen, but don't fancy paying through the nose for it, Thomas recommends Det Lille Øresund, Oehlenschlægersgade 41, 1663, Copenhagen. Simon Sinek'in dünya çapında pazarlamacılara ilham veren meşhur "neden ile başla" videosu yayılıyordu. Thomas Kolster'in web sitesi ve bloguhttps://thomaskolster.com/Thomas Kolster'ın Linkedin profilihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thomaskolster/

My special guest in this episode is Thomas Kolster, a marketing activist & advisor, an international speaker and author of Goodvertising (2012) and The Hero Trap (2020).When he wrote his first book Goodvertising, sustainability and purpose was emerging in advertising and marketing communication. Simon Sinek's "start with why" inspired many marketers around the world. Since then Thomas believes purpose has evolved. According to BBMG & GlobalScan research 65% of people say they want to buy from purposeful brands but only 26% actually buy them. He's underlining that consumers don't "buy" the world-bettering claims, further it goes, so do the disblief.Meanwhile we are all after self development yet change is difficult. He claims that the purpose of a brand doesn't help one to move from intention to action. Brands should discover the ways to empower their consumers to achieve their potentials. That's why Thomas recommends to start with "Who", "Who can you help people become?"He introduces his model "arrow" inspired by psychoterapy and coaching because those two disciplines moves people from intention to action. We had a very nice chat from Carlsberg to Mars & Venus full of laughter. I hope you'll enjoy it and benefit from his very fresh look at "purpose".Thomas Kolster's web site and bloghttps://thomaskolster.com/Thomas Kolster's Linkedin profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thomaskolster/

Brands trying to heroes (in the archetypal sense of the word) are making a mistake. In a recent article in Adweek, Thomas Kolster, the author of 2012 book Goodvertising says he has changed his mind. In his new book, The Hero Trap, he explores how brands try to become heroes—and unwittingly (or knowingly) end up being selfish in the process.Customers should be the heroes, not brands, in my opinion. Tomorrow we'll explore examples of successful brands whose archetypes are not the hero. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
