Most of us drive nearly every day, whether on the commute to work or to pick up groceries or to take the occasional road trip. With so much time spent in the car, it's vital that you keep your vehicle in excellent working order. When you take your vehicle in for standard maintenance or for a necessary car repair, you're ensuring the safety of your loved ones and of your investment. But where you take your car for service matters; does your local auto body shop provide top quality care for your car? We spoke with Louie Sharp, the owner of Sharp Auto Body in Illinois, all about how to ensure you're getting the best vehicle care possible.Louie Sharp is wired to help people. He's been serving others non-stop since the 1970s when he served us all in the United States Marine Corps. After his release, Louie continued in the Marine Reserves for another sixteen years where he was a jet engine mechanic on both “E” and “N” model Huey helicopters. After active duty, the automotive world seemed to be calling his name. So in 1980 Louie became a full time apprentice body man with Scott's Auto Body in Arlington Heights, Illinois. At the same time he took the first step toward owning his own shop. In 1981 Sharp Auto Body opened its doors, and the dream was a reality. By the late ‘80s Louie was ready for another challenge and opened his towing business where he continues to offer 24 hour towing service. Louie Sharp is committed to excellence and well-being in everything he does. Safety, integrity and outrageous customer service are the keys to his success. I-Car certified, he is a graduate of the Automotive Management Success Program. Two New Zealand salvage companies are preparing to remove fuel and other pollutants from the HMNZS Manawanui, that is 30 metres metres under water after sinking off the coast of Samoa in October. The ship went down after hitting a reef in a Marine Reserve off the island of Upolu. 75 crew and passengers were rescued after being forced to abandon ship. Manawanui has nearly a 1000 tonnes of automotive gas oil on board, that has diesel like qualities. While the main tanks are still believed to be intact, offiicals estimate up to 200,000 litres of fuel from other parts of the ship have leaked into the sea. Navy Commodore Andrew Brown is in charge of Operation Resolution, he spoke to Lisa Owen.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/623  Presented by: Togiak River Lodge, Visit Helena, MT, Stonefly Nets, Yellowstone Teton Territory Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors  Craig Hayes, owner of Turneffe Flats Lodge, has spent the last 40 years pioneering conservation efforts and catch-and-release practices, making Belize a top destination for anglers. In this episode, Craig shares the fascinating history of the lodge, innovative programs shaping the fishing industry, and tips for planning a successful tarpon trip. Whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the sport, Craig's insights and stories are not to be missed. Welcome back to Belize for another big one with Craig Hayes from tflats.com! Episode Chapters with Craig Hayes on Turneffe Flats Lodge 1:26 - Craig shares how he got into fly fishing in the 1970s while living in the Black Hills of South Dakota, learning from a young boy who later became a manager an ER doctor, and then manager at Turneffe Flats. 5:09 - He highlights Turneffe Atoll as a prime location due to its less developed nature and diverse fishing opportunities, allowing anglers to catch various species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon. He also mentions that they offer rental programs for those who don't have the necessary equipment. 11:09 -We dig into the conservation efforts of flats fishing in Belize. Craig shares positive findings from recent surveys of fishing guides, which indicate that the fish population, including bonefish, is thriving, with an increase in both the size and number of fish. He attributes much of this success to Belize's 2009 Catch and Release Legislation, which protects species like bonefish, permit, and tarpon. 17:20 - Craig explains that the key to successfully passing this legislation was making a strong economic argument. They hired a fisheries economist who studied flats fishing in Belize. The study revealed that flats fishing had a significant financial impact. This data was presented to government officials, emphasizing the economic benefits of protecting certain fish species. 22:15 - He discusses the current situation in Belize, where there is significant development interest, particularly in tropical coastal areas. He expresses concern about the potential negative impact on flats fishing, an important part of Belize's economy. Instead of addressing each development project individually, Craig advocates for a comprehensive approach to protect all flats in Belize. 24:28 - We reflect on their journey in the fishing and tourism industry, particularly focusing on their experiences since starting a fishing lodge in Belize. Craig and his wife have been involved in the business for 24 years. Craig recounts how he became interested in bonefishing after reading an article in Sports Illustrated, which inspired him and his friends to consider starting a bonefishing lodge in Belize, despite minimal tourism at the time. 29:00 - We talk about sustainable tourism and its implementation within Craig's operation. Craig highlighted that their operation is completely off-grid, relying on an extensive solar system that generates 75% of their energy and a sophisticated water system that primarily uses stored rainwater. 31:04 - Craig expresses that Yvon Chouinard is his hero due to his approach to life, conservation, and business. Inspired by Yvon, Craig and his wife are planning to implement a purpose trust for their business, which will allocate the majority of its future disposable income to conservation efforts. 39:01 - Craig mentions two primary conservation groups: the Turneffe Atoll Trust, which has driven initiatives like catch and release practices, and the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association, known for its successful management of the Marine Reserve. 42:50 - Craig discusses the best times to visit Belize. He explains that bonefish and permit fishing are available year-round, depending on tides and weather. However, the prime time for migratory tarpon fishing is from mid-April through August. Bookings for this period are already filling up for 2025. Craig advises bringing a variety of fishing rods to be prepared for different conditions in May. 46:03 - Craig elaborates on their journey, mentioning that they started with very minimal resources—a small Honda generator running only a few hours each night—but over 40 years, they managed to evolve and improve their situation significantly. 47:51 - We delve into the current fishing conditions and how climate change impacts their activities. Craig explains they've been experiencing an unusual heatwave in Belize, which has negatively affected the reef and the fish. Before this heatwave, fishing was excellent, but now they hope for rain and cooler weather to improve the situation. 51:08 - Craig mentions that besides their fishing programs, they offer high-quality eco-tours and a top-notch scuba diving program. These tours are designed to cater to families, with activities such as snorkeling and diving available for those who may not be as interested in fishing. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/623

At age 17, while still in high school, Sifuentes enlisted in Marine Reserves and went on active duty after graduation. He left the Corps after three years and attended college. After receiving his undergraduate degree, Sifuentes planned to pursue a Masters degree, but a meeting with a Marine officer selection official changed all that. Soon, we was off to flight school to learn how to fly helicopters. Shortly after that, he was off for the first of three tours in Vietnam. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Sifuentes takes us through flight training, the wide variety of missions he flew in Vietnam, including many in hot zones to extract reconaissance teams or wounded service members. He also details the work on his third tour in helping to remove mines from Haiphong Harbor and discusses the horrible treatment our troops received from Americans when they returned home. Finally, Sifuentes details his rewarding work with the Iwo Jima Association and why he is forever grateful to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Our third show with Lawman is a fun one. He opens the show describing how embarrassed he felt living the good life in Qatar while getting combat pay - though he did have to go to Afghanistan to prevent the outbreak of violence between the Marines and the Air Force! Then we back into how he was serving as the Full-Time Support (FTS) Officer for the Marine Reserve squadron in Willow Grove, PA. You will laugh out loud at the segment we call “An Approach Article Waiting to Happen” as Lawman tells about flying on a snowy night, unable to hear the pilot in the back seat, flying the second worst approach in the history of Naval Aviation; and then getting chewed-out because neither he nor the Major General in his back seat were qualified to fly that TA-4 that night! Lawman then tells how he applied to the Blue Angels to stay in a flying job for his next tour. Despite the pressure from his competition and the Monitor (the Marine who assigns your next duty station) to pull his application and forget it - Lawman was chosen to be a Blue Angel. Then the fun REALLY began! Whether it was pranks played on the FNG (Funny New Guy) or a steep learning curve, Lawman found out the hard way that initiative isn't always worth the trouble. This week's episode title was inspired when he tried to help the team and got yelled at on the radio for his efforts. No good deed goes unpunished!  Getting selected to be a Blue Angel may be the "easy part." Once you're there you have to perform. We close out with Lawman wondering if he made the wrong choice - riding on his first practice airshow with the Blues he wasn't sure they would make it through their first maneuver! Thanks this week goes out to “Sticks” for our new website logo. Check the pilot's visor. If you don't get it, go look up the Far Side cartoon from February 2, 1983! This is part three of our series celebrating 10 years of Oregon's Marine Reserve Program.  For those who aren't familiar, a Marine Reserve is an area within coastal waters dedicated to scientific research and conservation.Think of it as a combination of an underwater State Park, a wildlife preserve, and a living laboratory!  Here in Oregon, we have five designated Marine reserves.  From North to South, they are located offshore of Cape Falcon, Cascade Head, Otter Rock, Cape Perpetua, and way down South near Port Orford, Redfish Rocks.  In part one, we got a great high level overview of Oregon's Marine Reserve System with former Marine Reserve Program Leader, Cristin Don.  In part two, we heard from Nadia Gardner with Cape Falcon on the North Coast, and Duncan Berry with Cascade Head near Lincoln City. You can find those episodes, along with all of our shows, at coast range dot ORG.  We're also on all the podcast apps at Coast Range Radio, and we'd be grateful if you would subscribe to the show, and leave a rating and review.  If you're listening on your community radio station, please make sure to support them!Ok, back to today's episode! It was such a fun experience and since then I've seen it a number of times on various ships and each ship does it in a similar manner.I have noticed that crew members taking part seem to get special attentionWhat I'd like to know is;What is the tradition behind this nautical mayhem? Also if a ship is doing a world cruise does the crossing the line ceremony happen every time she passes the equator?Part of this question was answered in detail in Episode 68 – https://bit.ly/2UD2afjGill from SA asks Chris – what is the algorithm you talk about?Vilma from UK asks Baz – What makes TeeMill (your chosen supplier of podcast merchandise) so good.TeeMill: https://the-big-cruise-podcast.teemill.com/the-journey/ Example of “Buy a Tee, Plant a Tree” promotion:A holistic approach to reforestationThis weekend, we count your orders and fund the planting of trees in your brand's name. Our international tree planting partners work to address reforestation through a mixture of approaches. As well as directly seeding land with native seed species, they also employ methods like creating ‘seed bombs' which contain seeds mixed with clay, compost and soil, ready to plant when the rainy season arrives. After the trees are planted, protecting them is vital. Patrols and guard towers watch for fires and keep the forests from getting cut down illegally or destroyed by natural disasters.34 football pitches of forest plantedTogether, so far, across our tree planting weekends, we've planted enough trees to sequester over 1.7 million kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees are the ultimate carbon storage system without requiring any expensive tech, helping to fight climate change. What's more, they also help to cool our air by releasing water through their leaves which then turns into water vapour. The larger the tree, the more carbon it can hold which is why our tree planting partners work hard to protect forests as well as plant them. You can find your own tree planting stats in Analytics and set a Green Friday target for customers to get behind. Posting live updates across the weekend is a great way to keep your community engaged as you move towards your reforestation goal.Guest Lecturer - Tamara Tamara is an 8th generation Australian. Aotearoa's coastal waters are protected by more than 40 marine reserves, where it is illegal to fish, disturb or take any marine life. Even after decades of protection, damage caused by overfishing and human activity is still visible in some reserves. Marine scientists say stopping fishing isn't enough and its time to intervene. Samantha Gee, literally, took a deep dive.

This week we're joined by two more amazing finalists – and we decided to stick with just two this week as their stories were so entertaining and interesting, we didn't want to cut them short. First up, we have a finalist in the Marsh Tourism Industry Champion Award, Matt Stenton.  Having led multiple youth entrepreneurial programmes and contributing to various steering groups, boards and government boards in New Zealand, Matt brings an exciting and diverse set of experiences. Matt's motto is “Simple done well”, and he demonstrates this with his incredible ability to create simple solutions for complex problems. Combined with his cheeky personality and ability to get ‘stuff' done, he's a master of cutting through the ‘BS' to get to the heart of the matter. Matt is known for his extensive network and international tourism & hospitality connections. In 2011 he helped shape Virgin Australia New Zealand by introducing their new service design methodology and establishing new ways to train the aircrew. In late 2014, he was instrumental in delivering Gulfstreams 100th G650ER into service in New Zealand. Matt is currently the Programme Director for Go with Tourism. And following on from Matt, we welcome Jeroen Jungejans from Dive! Tutukaka, finalists in the Westpac Resilience and Innovation award. Jeroen is owner of Dive! Tutukaka, Perfect Day and Lodge9 - a marine adventure company based in Tutukaka, Northland, and heading out to the Poor Knights Islands - any activity in on or under at the best little Marine Reserve on the planet. A strong focus on the blue economy, the marine environment, leaving our rohe a better place than we found it, and acting as great ancestors are the driving forces behind Jeroen and his business. These interviews are seriously good, so listen in until the end and please enjoy the show.  Don't forget to leave us a 5 star rating wherever you listen in, and please share this with your colleagues and mates. Don't forget, we also have the Dart River Adventures competition going – and this is especially for you our listeners … it's super easy, just jump on our website www.destinatenz.com/competitions and fill out the form to tell us your favourite episode so far and why.  We're loving hearing all your reasons so far, but we know there are more of you who haven't yet entered!  The prize is a funyak safari for two valued at $598! The world-famous protected vibrant ecosystem of the Galapagos may not be protected at all. Nicknamed the Great Wall of China, the Chinese fishing fleet that descended on the Galapagos in 2020 made news around the world, but what is it going to take to actually stop it?The fleet could be seen from space, spanning almost double the length of the Galapagos archipelago itself. The most frightening thing about the situation was the fact that this is not the first time, nor the only country, that has targeted the outskirts of the Galapagos marine reserve for fishing. The lack of control over the high seas is having an impact that is trickling down to communities such as those of the Galapagos Islands. Their beaches becoming filled with plastic waster from a fleet, not even visible from shore, and the local fish and shark populations that tourism depends on are being targeted. From inside Ecuador's government, we speak to senior advisor Jeff Leblanc. During this podcast, we cover not only some of the things that occur in our open seas at the hands of industrial fishing vessels but the laws that need to be changed and enforced to end it.Support Mare NostrumFollow Mare Nostrum on InstagramGet in touch! Now fishing nets in waters our pretty common and depending on where you are in the world, they can be pretty common in marine reserves as well. But the team at the Auckland reserve are super strict when it comes to fishing lines and rightfully so!
