Dr. Rasmus dives into the details of the latest US jobs report, showing how the 943,000 new jobs for July is grossly distorted by seasonality adjustment bias by hundreds of thousands over-estimated. Why there are still 17m jobless (not 8.7m) and the unemployment rate is really 10.5%, not 5.4%. In the second half of the show, the current state of Infrastructure spending negotiations is reviewed. Why the Senate version, to be voted on this weekend, is actually the proposals of McConnell and the Republicans from the beginning, with only $500B new money spending on mostly traditional projects of roads, bridges, etc. The show continues with a brief assessment of the Congressional Budget Office's released estimate of a $3T budget deficit for the current fiscal year, due by far to tax and revenue causes rather than government social program spending. Why we are beginning to witness ‘creeping austerity' as social program spending funds in the Covid Relief Act of March 2021 are being cut or diverted to other areas. Rasmus concludes the show with a comment why 2021 may be a déjà vu repeat of the policy and economic recovery trajectory of 2020.

Salah satunya dengan 3T: tracing, testing, and treatment.

Dr. Rasmus discusses 4 key events of the past week and how they're related: (1) What does the preliminary report on 2nd Quarter 2021 US GDP really indicate? Is it a ‘V' or just the first half of a ‘W' given economic indicators showing a slowing of US recovery in the second half 2021. (2) the Federal Reserve meeting showed chair Powell is intent on continuing pumping in $120B of free money to the banks and investors every month for at least another year. Plus keep a second $1T spigot is now permanently open in the Repo Market for stock speculators as well. Why then are banks and investors continuing to get all the free money, while politicians keep cutting the promised fiscal stimulus for working and middle class households and the poor? Why Sanders' $3.5T Family Bill Dead on Arrival! (3) Rasmus next addresses the phony Infrastructure deal and the Dems latest concessions to McConnell & Republicans in the name of ‘bipartisanship'. (4) How is Biden's & Dem's retreat on infrastructure spending—from original $2.3T to $500B now—tied to the launch, six months after, of US House hearings on the January 6 Capitol insurrection?  Why no budget reconciliation & filibuster will mean no electoral reform which will seal the Dems defeat again in 2022. Why the crisis of the decline of US Democracy continues to intensify.

Dr. Rasmus begins today's show with an analysis of Biden's capitulation to McConnell and Republicans yesterday, in which he accepts their proposal for $579B spending on infrastructure instead of his original $2.3T (reduced in steps in recent weeks to $1.7T and then $1.1T). Gone are proposals for spending on child care, elderly, climate, and other non-corporate proposals in Biden's original bill. Rasmus explains why this ‘deal' was engineered from the beginning, ultimately in order to ensure Biden's proposed tax hikes on the wealthy and investors was not necessary. The corporate wing of the Democrat party (with Manchin running ‘point' as cover for Biden) always wanted this smaller bill. Bipartisanship was the key word always signaling it. Democrat party ‘spin' to sell the deal now. Why ‘follow on' bills to restore the cuts are DOA. In second half of the show Dr. Rasmus continues explaining why ‘Keynes' Economics' is not Keynesian, and how the latter expunged elements of Keynes' analysis it found too radical—including critique of financial speculation, capitalist trends toward income inequality and rising unemployment, and why ‘trickle down' (Keynesian) economics would not work. (For more on Infrastructure deal check out Dr. Rasmus' blog articles at http://jackrasmus.com).

Dr. Rasmus dissects the moves of Dems and Republicans on the Infrastructure bill (aka American Jobs Act) now underway. Both sides are mostly just ‘moving the money around’ and using various ‘smoke & mirrors’ to show they’re making proposals and counterproposals: GOP negotiators (McConnell et. al.) initially proposed $568B, but $394B of that was money already authorized and passed in other legislation. Yesterday, they raised their proposal to $928B, but that was by diverting $350B also already passed in the February ‘American Rescue Plan’ (Covid relief bill). Thus, GOP proposing to spend money already spent! Biden proposed March 31 a $2.3T spending on infrastructure, but unilaterally dropped it to $1.7T (and quietly agreed to include $304B already authorized in transport funding to be included in $1.7T. Biden ‘signaled’ in meeting with GOP to agree to final $1T only. Both Dems & GOP breaking out $400B on separate corp subsidy bills for manufacturing, tech, R&D, chips, etc. soon to be passed. Smoke & mirror negotiations going on for public consumption.  Rasmus also comments on latest economic stats on jobs and durable goods consumer spending and on political democracy reforms collapsing with HR-1 election reform now DOA + collapse of Commission on Jan. 6 riots. Rasmus concludes fight for Democracy only beginning, but red state Republicans have the longer term advantage as their legislatures move now aggressively to restrict and suppress voting.

PROSTATE PROS Series Finale On the last episode of the PROSTATE PROS podcast, Dr. Scholz and Liz recap important themes and talk about what’s new in prostate cancer, including Lutetium-177 and Orgovyx. Dr. Scholz: [00:03] We’re guiding you to treatment success and avoiding prostate cancer pitfalls. I’m your host, Dr. Mark Scholz. Liz: [00:09] And I’m your cohost, Liz Graves. Dr. Scholz: [00:13] Welcome to the PROSTATE PROS podcast. Liz: [00:15] We have a bit of a sad announcement to make, as this will be the last episode of the PROSTATE PROS podcast. Dr. Scholz and I have really enjoyed working on this project and we’ve covered so many important topics surrounding prostate cancer and men’s health. So for this last episode, we’re going to recap some important themes and talk about some promising new therapies. So Dr. Scholz, on our very first episode, we talked about how important it is to find the right treatment team. This is something that’s come up again and again and again. What are some tips you have for newly diagnosed men trying to find their doctors? Dr. Scholz: [00:53] I think what’s confusing is how much of the responsibility falls on the shoulders of patients. The prostate industry is a very powerful multi-billion dollar industry, and there is a lot happening really fast. When patients are diagnosed, they’re not in a thoughtful perspective, they’re in an action mode, they’re frightened. It is hard to sort out who to listen to and who to stay away from. This process can be aided by family members, primary care doctors, oncologists, and of course, online resources and books. I try to provide some of that information in the book, The Key to Prostate Cancer, but the process, if it was easy, we could give you one simple answer. It is not a simple process. Liz: [01:46] One thing that we’ve talked about is to get a quarterback. So this is a doctor that isn’t the treating doctor necessarily, but it’s someone that will oversee the treatment and work with the other teams of doctors. This is something I hear you doing Dr. Scholz, you’re always talking to other doctors about patients and kind of networking with them to make sure that the patient is getting the best care, even when they’re not in our office. Dr. Scholz: [02:12] I think the issue that you’re relating to is that many of these physicians have a conflict of interest. You’re asking them, what should I do? But they’re a surgeon or they’re a radiation doctor. And as a medical oncologist, I’m neither of the above. This is somewhat uncommon, but you can recruit your urologist or your radiation doctor to help you by explaining at the outset that, “you, sir, will not be my treating doctor, but I definitely need your aid and your assistance in picking the right doctor.” Liz: [02:43] Now you may be thinking that you have cancer and you don’t have time to see all these people, but as we’ve mentioned, prostate cancer is slow growing. So really taking that time to find the right doctor for you is crucial. Dr. Scholz: [02:56] Just yesterday, I saw a very sophisticated new patient who was feeling the rush job, the sense that the clock is ticking, and he did have a Gleason 9. We consider that the High-Risk category of prostate cancer. But, the idea that you have to make a decision within days or weeks is never substantiated by the literature and the science. Patients can take several months to sort out what they want to do. This sort of careful thoughtful process pays off in the long-term with better results. Liz: [03:29] So patients really need to take it under their control. One of the things is to educate themselves. In the past couple of years, there’s been a huge shift towards imaging. So we’ve had the approval of the PSMA PET scan and using 3T MP MRIs and color Doppler to help men diagnose their prostate cancer and watch it. Dr. Scholz: [03:51] What Elizabeth is referring to is that if you don’t have a clear picture of where the cancer is and whether it’s spread outside the gland, what part of the gland it’s located in, it’s not feasible to tailor treatment to the specific needs of the individual. Some men are fortunate enough to have prostate cancers residing on one side of their gland. This opens the door to something called focal therapy, enabling men to undergo treatment with less risk of erectile dysfunction. There were a lot of things we could have covered in this last podcast and the reminder that quality imaging and not only MRI and PSMA PET scans, but scans done at centers of excellence that are read by experts are going to help men be light years ahead in their selection of treatment, because they’ll have a clear picture of what they’re really treating. Liz: [04:43] So we’ve actually gotten emails from people all across the country saying, you know, my doctor’s never heard of the PSMA PET scan or my doctor doesn’t do 3T imaging. So it is really important that you take the time to educate yourself and bring these questions to your doctors. Finding the right treatment team and doing your due diligence to make sure you’re choosing the right treatment is all important because of where the prostate is located. Treatment related side effects can have damaging effects on quality of life. Because prostate cancer is so slow growing, hopefully you’ll have a very long life, so it’s important that that can be lived to the best of your ability. Dr. Scholz: [05:25] That’s so, so important. And these functions, sexual, urinary functions are something that people face every day of their life. In the hustle bustle to get treatment quickly, the fact that if the treatment is not done in an ideal way, that men can be left with permanent issues unnecessarily, certainly if there was no other option, we would live with these negative consequences. But, in most cases now with skillful care, these things can be avoided. Liz: [05:58] Over the past two years, Dr. Scholz and I have covered all the treatment options from active surveillance to surgery, radiation chemotherapy. These episodes will still be available even after the podcast ends, you can go back and re-listen and keep sharing with friends and educating yourself. Dr. Scholz: [06:16] One thing about this information provided in the podcast is not only the idea of which treatment is best and what kind of things to look out for, but the step by step process, the thinking process, the procedures, and how you can come to get the right doctors and the right treatment is implicit in the whole podcast system that we have provided. So you can also just learn from the thought process that leads to successful outcomes. Liz: [06:49] While there are a lot of challenges that newly diagnosed patients face, patients with advanced prostate cancer also are missing out on some tools like Xgeva and Prolia. Dr. Scholz: [07:01] These medicines are to help compensate for men who have disease that’s spread to their bones or men who’ve been on hormone treatment and the calcium is leaching out, a process called osteoporosis. The number of times this is overlooked and people coming to us for second opinions is really quite surprising, as they are FDA approved to help compensate for these problems. So simple second opinions can be so valuable for men, even if they have advanced disease. Liz: [07:35] As we segue into what’s coming up and what’s new in prostate cancer, we wanted to quickly mention that there are a lot of new drugs and things being tested for FDA approval through clinical trials. Clinical trials are a great way to get access to these new medications, if you have a specialist on your team who is constantly looking out for these and keeping tabs on what’s coming up. Dr. Scholz: [08:03] Every new medicine or treatment goes through a process of being researched. Once it’s validated as a treatment, it gets FDA approved. And then after that, it becomes commercialized and broadly available across the country. The things that succeed through that process are very valuable. And we’ll be talking about a Lutetium-177 and a new pill called Orgovyx. These medicines have been available, but now are commercially available. If your physician is not staying abreast of all the new developments, men who could benefit from these treatments will be denied access simply through unawareness. Liz: [08:43] Lutetium-177 is something that we’ve talked about on past podcasts. And it’s not even FDA approved yet, but you’ve actually had some patients who have had it, is that correct? Dr. Scholz: [08:57] Lutetium-177 a was purchased by a Novartis pharmaceuticals for $2 billion prior to all the testing being completed because all the preliminary data looks so favorable recently, they released the code for the large clinical trial that was performed confirming that it does prolong survival. This is a medicine that was evaluated in men with very advanced prostate cancer who had already had chemotherapy who had been on other powerful hormone treatments and they’d stopped working. The man who got treated with Lutetium-177 lived longer, statistically significantly longer, than the men who got an alternative, placebo-type approach. This medicine is well tolerated. It can cause some dryness of people’s mouths. It can lower blood counts a little bit, but it’s a simple injection every six weeks. And it is a potent treatment for men with advanced disease. It may even be a useful treatment for men with earlier stage disease. This will probably be commercially available within a year. Liz:  [10:05] To learn more about this medicine, we covered it in Episode 10, Don’t Reject Radiation.  So you can go back and listen to that.  At the end of 2020, there was a new FDA approval Orgovyx.  This is an oral anti-androgen, so it works kind of like a Lupron, but instead of it being an injection, it’s just a daily pill.  Dr. Scholz: [10:28] So how much do we really need a new pill? When if you could take an injection that lasts three to six months, and you don’t have to remember taking pills every day, but Orgovyx may have some other advantages when compared to head to head with Lupron and the other medicines like Lupron, such as Firmagon and Trelstar, Eligard, and Zoladex. These medicines all work by shutting down the production of testosterone in a man’s testicles. Orgovyx is interesting for two reasons. One is that the recovery of testosterone when treatment is stopped, seems to be much more predictable and consistent medicines like Lupron, and the others that I mentioned, can have a very protracted and prolonged effect even after they’re stopped, and it’s hard to predict when testosterone is going to return. Another thing that came out in Orgovyx trials was a lower incidence of cardiovascular complications. For years, I’ve made a strong argument that Lupron and other drugs do not cause cardiovascular problems directly, but indirectly in men who have a lot of weight gain, blood pressure goes up, blood sugars start to go out of control. Of course these things can lead to cardiovascular problems, but for some reason, in that randomized trial Orgovyx had a lower incidence of cardiovascular related issues. This is certainly an interesting and potential advantage for this medication. Liz:  [11:56] Technology and medicine around prostate cancer is improving almost daily.  And one of the things that’s really promising is immunotherapy.  We talked about this on Episode 9, The Intelligence of Immunotherapy, and we cover all sorts of different things that will benefit men with prostate cancer, like KEYTRUDA and OPDIVO YERVOY.  So if you’re interested in learning more about immunotherapy Episode 9 is a great place to start.  Making this podcast has been such a rewarding experience for Dr. Scholz and I, and we really hope that it’s helped you on your prostate cancer journey.  And we’ve left you with a little more education and knowledge and empowered you to take control of your prostate cancer diagnosis and spend time really learning about it and understanding, so you can have your medicine personalized to you.  You can find the right doctors, seek second opinions, and then take everything you’ve learned to spread awareness about prostate cancer.  Remember prostate cancer is a silent disease and it affects so many men and families and loved ones.  This really needs to be something that people are comfortable talking about.  So we hope our podcast has helped give you some points to talk about with your friends and family members and help them make those treatment decisions.   Dr. Scholz: [13:26] So Kaili, my business manager and myself are very grateful to Liz for all the hard work she’s done in compiling these episodes and helping us reach the things that really count. It’s been quite a bit of work along the way, which has been a delight to participate in for me. Liz, can you just share a couple of sentences of where you think you’re going to be going with your own professional career as you’re moving on? Liz: [13:51] Yes.  I am actually pursuing higher education to become a professional writer.  I am looking forward to it, but I’m definitely sad that I won’t be working with you and bringing this podcast to everyone.  I know I’ve had so much fun learning about prostate cancer and hopefully being able to help all of our listeners navigate this subject.  Again, these episodes have been archived, so you can go back and listen to all twenty-four of them on podcast.prostateoncology.com, or Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, wherever you like to listen.  Another good tip is that the PCRI’s YouTube videos come out every week.  These are awesome videos that talk all about prostate cancer.  Dr. Scholz is a very frequent guest on there, so I would highly recommend you check that out.  You can find them at youtube.com/thePCRI.  Thank you for listening and supporting us.

today’s show focuses on Biden’s just announced Infrastructure Plan. Called a jobs plan, it will produce few jobs in 2021-22 and have virtually no impact on the near term 2021 economic recovery effort. Estimated by the Wall St. Journal at $2.3T, over 8 yrs., very little will hit the US economy in the much needed early stage of recovery in 2021. At best it will be passed no sooner that 3rd quarter 2021 and not then if filibuster in Senate is upheld. Composed of two phases, the second will not likely be passed (if at all) until 2022. Combined with the Biden prior Covid 19 Relief bill (American Rescue Plan) which projects less than $1T spending in 2021, the combined two fiscal spending bills (ARP and now American Jobs Plan, aka Infrastructure bill) will provide roughly $1 trillion stimulus to US economy in 2021, as it reopens aggressively in coming months. Dr. Rasmus discusses the outlines of Biden’s Tax plan, designed to cover part of the cost of the two stimulus bills. (see last week’s show for more details on Biden’s tax proposals).

In one of the most inspiring episodes to date, Thomas Udeson, Chief Procurement Officer at Bayer and Co-Founder of the Sustainable Procurement Pledge (SPP.Earth) chats with Sheri Hinish (SupplyChainQueen) about his journey, the power of uniting under the SDGs for climate action and sustainability, and how procurement professionals are uniquely positioned to make this happen. For Thomas, it started with a global curiosity hearing his father talk about shipments. He eloquently describes that "supply chains are the pulse of our society and humanity. Supply chains make things happen and what makes the world the great place it can become. And if you work in a supply chain you naturally get exposed to the beauty of people and diversity." On today’s show we’re going to take a short trip through the history books. We’re not going back to Roman times, or ancient Greece. Although there are numerous powerful lessons in history that we could easily apply to today’s environment. No. On today’s show we’re going back to the fall of 2019, and then we’re going to go back to the fall of the year 1999. 2019 seems like a distant memory. The economy seemed to be humming along nicely. Unemployment was at a historic low. Stock market valuations were considered irrationally high in 2019. We were in the 4thquarter of one of the longest albeit slowest economic expansions on record. Extrapolating continued expansion seemed foolhardy at best. But today’s wounded economy is totally different: only partly recovered, possibly facing a double-dip, probably facing a slowdown, and certainly facing a very high degree of uncertainty. Yet the market is much higher today than it was in 2019 when the economy looked fine and unemployment was at a historic low. Today the P/E ratio of the market is among the highest in history and the economy is fragile to say the least. Let’s go back to 1999. My company Tundra Semiconductor went public on February 8, 1999 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Shares priced at $9.25 but were in such demand that they opened at $13.10 and closed their first day of trading at $13.24. We were part of that .com euphoria. We didn’t know it. We were too wrapped up in counting our rising daily net worth. At one point, my stock options were worth millions. By March of 2000, the stock hit a high of $78. We were all on top of the world. We were extrapolating to when our stock might be worth $300 to $400 a share. We were absolutely delusional. It was a very powerful and humbling lesson in greed and the dangers of the echo chamber of groupthink. Everyone in the tech industry was rationalizing the valuations. The idea that people would skip the pet food aisle at the grocery store and order their pet food from a separate specialty retailer online was clearly nuts. But those companies still managed to attract stock valuations in the billions. When the bubble burst, most of that paper wealth, that monopoly money wealth evaporated. I know of some people who exercised their options, triggering a tax obligation, and then didn’t sell the stock. So they were left with stock that was worth far less that when they exercised. The remaining value wasn’t even enough to pay the tax obligation. Some people had to mortgage their house to pay the tax bill on money they never got to put in their bank account. That’s how confident people were in the valuation of these companies. I think about an interview with Scott McNealy, former CEO of Sun Microsystems. He said “What were you thinking?”. He was asking this of investors paying a “ridiculous” ten times revenues for his stock at the height of the .com mania. If you bought Sun Microsystems stock in 1994, you would have seen a 100x increase in value by the time it hit the peak price of $253. So here we are. Tesla stock is trading at 1600 times trailing 12 month earnings. It has an enterprise value of 802 billion dollars. The stock is trading at 28 times revenue. Sun Microsystems was a relative bargain at only 10 x revenue. When the world finally woke up and said this is nuts. The stock came back to earth. By 2008, the stock had lost 98% of its value compared with 2000. $1.3T worth of paper value was wiped out in the .com bubble burst. The resulting economic recession was partly caused by the difficulty that many companies faced in raising capital needed to expand their businesses. It forced contraction in thousands of businesses which resulting in economic contraction. So here we are. We are in a major bubble. That is as plain as day.

Solid Financial Advice

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 5, 2021 15:28

In this episode of Solid Financial Advice, Ryan Hughes discusses the factors behind the 2020 market performance and a preview of 2021.  Between COVID, Black Lives Matter protests, intensifying political divisions, the climate crisis, and more, 2020 has been very challenging. These difficulties were exacerbated by the fact that we were all forced to stay home. Compound this with your kids forced to attend school online (now you’re a teacher too), the fear of you potentially losing your job or your business, and the risk of losing your wealth due to market instability, it is no wonder why we are all stressed out. Despite all of this, the market has delivered an impressive return this year. In fact, we have reached new all-time highs. As I write this, the S&P 500 TR is up 14.35% YTD, far better than any of us would’ve predicted in March, the peak of the hysteria.  A lot of people are quick to compare the recent stock market performance to that of the economy — “It doesn’t make sense that the market is doing performing so well when half of the economy is shut down, and the people continue to lose their jobs.”  Yes, GDP levels have dropped significantly, and the unemployment rate spiked to record levels. However, the rebound thus far has been pretty impressive.  These rebounds show that the economy is continuing to recover. History will show that the 2020 recession is the deepest since the Great Depression, though one of the shortest on record, possibly the quickest ever. Because both the Unemployment rate and GDP are lagging indicators, they confirm what has already happened, not what is yet to occur. The stock market, however, is neither a lagging nor a concurrent indicator. It is instead a forward-looking-indicator that is continuously attempting to price in probable future equity cash flows. The minute-by-minute, day-by-day moves in the stock market act as a price-discovery tool, digesting new information as it arrives.  THE MARKET REACTION TO COVID When news of COVID-19 cases began to spread in February and March, the stock market reacted accordingly. The S&P 500 fell fast, the fastest in history. At the time, we did not know what COVID-19 was or how deadly it can be. Were we looking at something similar to the ebola epidemic that killed 11,000 people or the bubonic plague that wiped out over half of Europe’s population in the 14th century? (LiveScience) Are we talking tens-of-thousands or tens-of-millions of deaths in the US? The stock market began to price in a worst-case scenario. The downside risk of a significant pandemic has the potential to cause us to lose a large number of human lives and the possibility of a major reversal of human progress. Once we began to understand this disease’s true nature, our worst-case fears started to dissipate, and the market reacted accordingly. Yes, COVID is extremely serious and deadly. Both of my grandparents are currently battling COVID, along with many other family members in my home state of Colorado. I am not downplaying this virus. However, it is not as severe as our fears indicated earlier this year. Unprecedented action by the Federal Reserve and Congress has also had a significant role in the stock market reversal. The total SPX drawdown from its February 19th peak to its March 23rd valley was -34%. It could’ve been much worse if the Fed did not act swiftly and boldly. The trillions of dollars in fiscal stimulus combined with the Fed’s actions acted as a catapult for the market. It only took five months before the S&P 500 broke above its all-time high.  STOCK LEADERS While the major averages have rebounded impressively, this rally has been extremely uneven, with tech growth stocks leading the way. The top 5 YTD SPX performers are five stocks that nobody would’ve predicted earlier this year.  More importantly, though, this is the year of innovative stocks. COVID has accelerated technological growth and its subsequent adoption. Businesses that have been reluctant to embrace digital transformation or those that are unwilling to be flexible during these times now find themselves in severe financial trouble. A post-COVID world will be one where society has embraced remote work, digital content consumption, platformification, and digital health solutions. Cathie Wood, the founder of Ark Funds, states it best – “As is typical during periods of turbulence and fear, consumers and businesses are willing to think differently and change their behavior. As both look for cheaper, more productive, or more creative ways to satisfy their needs, we believe that disruptive innovation will take root and gain significant market share.” This is why we see those companies that offer faster, cheaper, more cost-effective, and creative products to their customers are gaining significant share. They are the prime beneficiaries of this radical change we are living in today.  Instead of going to a physical retailer to buy goods, people purchased their items online. Instead of meeting up with family or friends for dinner and a drink, people would order takeout and eat and drink at home. Instead of going to a movie theater, people are streaming their content. People are still consuming goods and services; they are only consuming them differently in this environment. LOOKING FORWARD TO 2021 We believe that 2021 has a fantastic set up as there are significant tailwinds for equities. Life will likely never return to how it was in 2019, but 2021 will undoubtedly be better than 2020. Here are our most significant equity tailwinds for 2021: COVID vaccine Not a surprise to anyone, the most critical catalyst for equity returns is the deployment of the COVID vaccine. As enough American’s receive a vaccine, and as we approach herd immunity, we will begin to open our economy once again fully. Restaurant owners, bar operators, tourism employees, and others can finally return to work. However, I suspect that the economic reopening plan will be lumpy and chaotic. Many Americans will opt not to receive a vaccine, many employees will prefer to work from home, and many businesses will have already closed their doors for good. The COVID shutdowns have done irreversible damage to many individuals and business owners, and some of them will not come out of this whole. However, those that have survived this will likely be stronger and able to capture more market share. This, in its simplest definition, is capitalism — survival of the fittest.  Terminal velocity The economy continues to recover from the March economic shutdowns, and I believe that we are at breakaway speed / terminal velocity. The latest economic shutdowns will likely impact our employment figures, but it will not be enough to derail the recovery. Consumer demand looks very strong. Inventory numbers indicate that companies are having a difficult time keeping up with consumer demand. Leading Indicators continue to show robust economic strength. All of this points to a continued strong recovery.  Split Congress The Democrats have secured the House of Representatives with a 232-197 advantage. The Senate currently stands at 50 Republicans and 48 Democrats. We are still waiting on the Georgia Senate runoff election results on January 5th, 2021, for the two remaining seats. If Democrats win both runoffs, the party will control the chamber because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would break any ties. However, if Republicans win one of the two races, they will maintain control. I don’t know how it will turn out, though it seems likely that this will be the case. Still, we will know very soon. If the Republicans maintain control, then we have a split Congress. From a capital markets perspective, this bodes well for near-term equity returns. There will be no changes to the tax code, and President-elect Biden will find it difficult to undo a lot of the deregulation President Trump has enacted over the previous four years. Again, from a capital-market perspective, this is good. Capital markets perform best under these conditions.  IN THE END At some point, we will have to pay for the fiscal deficit spending we’ve seen this year. The CBO currently projects a $3.3T deficit for FY2020. Are we only going to print more money to pay for this (this is inflationary and akin to MMT), or will we have to raise taxes at some point in the future? Who knows. We’ve been kicking this can down the road for decades, and I expect us to continue to do the same.  We also have to keep in mind that the markets and the economy are fluid and ever-changing. What we see now and what we expect to see in the future will change. Having an open mind and a willingness to change is the key to success. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that life will place roadblocks in front of you. Be nimble and recognize that you can overcome them.

Solid Financial Advice
American Capitalism Has Changed, Ep. 14

Solid Financial Advice

In this episode of Solid Financial Advice, Ryan Hughes discusses the recent changes to the American capitalist system and how fiscal and monetary policy has influenced the markets.  No longer is the Federal Reserve only using interest rates as a lever to spur or temper economic growth. With interest rates at all-time lows, they are now using more radical tools at their disposal. Monetary policy (the Federal Reserve’s actions) is having a more direct influence on economic growth. The YTD money supply in the US is up nearly 20%. The Fed’s balance sheet has increased by 70% during this same period.  During the COVID slowdown, fiscal policy (government spending and tax policies) has also implemented extreme measures this year, though it was mostly necessary due to economic shutdowns. The COVID recession would likely have been much worse without intervention. These measures, though, come at a price.  A government issues additional debt when its net revenue does not fully cover its spending and the interest it owes on existing debt, creating a deficit. The year-end deficit is projected to be $3.3T, triple the shortfall recorded in 2019. Of course, this deficit is added to the country’s debt, and who knows when we will pay this debt down. According to the Congressional Budget Office, Federal Debt held by the public is projected to be 195% of GDP in 2050 (Congressional Budget Office) MODERN MONETARY THEORY (MMT) This activity resembles money printing, and some liken it to Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), an alternative to mainstream macroeconomic theory. MMT states that because the US government controls the money supply, the government can spend freely as they can always create more money to pay off their debts.  MMT has become an increasingly popular economic theory in some left-leaning circles in recent years, in part due to its extreme change from our current policy. Progressive politicians like Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York are among the most vocal MMT supporters. However, the single biggest problem with MMT is the devaluation of the USD and the subsequent inflation. If the government will print more money to meet it’s spending needs, how is this strategy sustainable? DEFICIT SPENDING TO CONTINUE Deficit spending will likely continue past this COVID crisis. Policymakers no longer feel compelled to allow the free market to determine asset prices, but instead are determined to guide it themselves. Capitalism, as we know it, has changed. Furthermore, depending on the election outcome, taxes will likely rise next year, further complicating this new environment. A NEW GAME What does this mean for you all? We think there is a new game afoot and the rules have changed. The direct influence of both fiscal and monetary policymakers will benefit equity prices going forward, especially on a relative basis. However, with interest rates near all-time lows, we have a hard time believing that money printing will keep interest rates low and bond prices high. The risk/reward ratio for most bonds look meek at best. The question is, “When will rates rise again?” Your guess is as good as mine. Inflation drives interest rates and trying to predict inflation is near impossible. Inflation levels can rise next year, in three years, in five years, or even longer. While Money Supply is increasing, price discovery via online companies like Amazon has helped to keep inflation levels low. So, it is a battle between these two powerful forces. More importantly, though, is that the Federal Reserve can remain solvent much longer than any of us. Trying to ‘trade’ off of these developments is risky. Though, what we do know is that interest rates cannot go much lower. Adjust your portfolio accordingly. While asset prices are high and tax rates are low, we urge you to devote time to your planning ahead of the year-end. We are here to assist, as always.

Why Are Interest Rates Rising?

We’ve been hearing for months how interest rates are going down and how the Federal Reserve is going to maintain rates at near zero levels until well into 2022. That all sounds like good news for real estate investors who are looking to borrow funds at the lowest possible interest rates. As we’re talked about before, the interest rate charged by the banks is often tied to one of two benchmark rates. Shorter term loans and variable rate loans are usually tied to a short term benchmark like LIBOR which is the London Interbank Overnight Rate. Permanent financing is usually tied to the yield on the 10 year US Treasury Bill. When the Congress enacted legislation back in March to protect the US economy that involved a massive amount of printing of money. The total in new spending was $2.3T dollars. Most of that money was issued in the form of Treasury Notes having a short term of one year or less. As those notes become due, they are being repriced as longer term debt which carries with it a less frequent need for renewal. Over the past 80 days, the yield on the 10 year treasury has gone from 0.52% to 0.79%. That increase in almost 1/3 of a percentage point translates into interest rates for permanent financing that are 1/3 of a percentage point higher. There are three scenarios to consider. 1) A Republican sweep of the White House and both chambers of government 2) A split of the chambers of Government. It may not actually matter as much who wins the White House. 3) A Democratic sweep of the White House and both chambers of government. Let’s look at all three of these scenarios. According to the polls, a Trump victory in the White House is looking less likely. It’s highly unlikely that Republicans would win all three. Whether Joe Biden or Donald Trump is the next President, both will continue printing money. The big question is how much. The second scenario with a split between the House and the Senate will result in legislative gridlock. We’ve seen that in the past 7 months with no new money being pledged to recover from the pandemic. The level of acrimony between the parties has become the new normal in government. The third case, involving a Democratic sweep of the White House and both chambers of government has the potential to unleash an unprecedented level of spending. It’s that third scenario that has the markets worried. We are already seeing signs of inflation even though it’s being downplayed by politicians. Inflation is the hidden tax that most people can’t isolate. When a can of tomatoes at the grocery store goes up by $0.50 most people blame the grocery store for the price increase. They rarely put the blame on the Secretary of the Treasury, or the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, or their representative in Congress. When those trillions of dollars get printed, the debt goes somewhere. So far, the US has been able to export the debt over the past 30 years. China’s central bank and Saudi Arabia have been willing buyers of all that debt. But the willingness of those countries to fund US deficits seems to be evaporating. For now, we’re in the middle of a global pandemic. All economies are suffering. When asked the question about which currency to buy, there doesn’t seem to be a stronger currency emerging. The Euro is in bad shape, the Yen is hopelessly over-leveraged, and international investors are not about to put their trust in the Chinese Central government. As we get closer to the election, and even after the election whoever wins we can expect the yield for 10 year Treasuries to go up. You have a small window in which to lock in historically low interest rates. Even if the Fed keeps rates low, I believe Treasury yields will go up, and therefore interest rates for investors.

As an attorney and serial entrepreneur, Ajay Agrawal has spent years working with contracts within the private legal sector and built his first company, UnitedLex Corporation, to more than $300M in revenue. In his latest venture, SirionLabs, Ajay is working to streamline contracts for modern businesses' needs. With 4x customer growth over the last 18 months, SirionLabs is a leading contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform that uses AI to bring businesses into the future. But what problems are they solving with technology? Despite the rapid digitization of contracts in our largely subscription-based economy, only 15% of Fortune 500 companies are tracking their contracts' performance - resulting in up to 15-20% of the contract value being lost as value leakage, which translates to $2-3T lost annually. While legacy tools to help manage contracts exist, they usually focus only on contract creation and storage. There's a massive opportunity to take CLM to another level by allowing companies to go beyond signature into the operation stage of a contract to easily manage their risks, obligations, and entitlements. The company is already trusted by 200+ leading organizations including BP, Vodafone, and Unilever. SirionLabs has saved its customers over $2.2B. With decades of experience, Ajay shares his expert insights into new and exciting technologies that modern enterprises need to bring improved visibility and collaboration across enterprises. Ajay discusses the larger role that AI will play in strengthening relationships between buyers and suppliers and the key to building trust over the long term. He also walks through successful case study examples as to how he's helped these businesses achieve operational excellence and why this can be transformative in challenging economic times that we live in now.
