In the first episode of our new Celtic Relived series we were joined by Billy Stark – an important and hugely popular member of Celtic's Double winning Centenary Team. Billy McNeill had returned to the club as manager ahead of the 1987/88 season and made Billy Stark his first signing as the club attempted to wrestle back the title from Rangers having finished without a trophy the season before. Billy played a vital part in the club's success in that special season, ultimately finishing 3rd top scorer behind Andy Walker and Frank McAvennie, and for those who recall was instrumental in our comeback win over Dundee United in that memorable Scottish Cup Final. As a player that Alex Ferguson signed twice (for St Mirren & Aberdeen) Billy was in the twilight of his career at 30 years of age when he eventually put pen to paper for Celtic, and his signing perhaps flew under the radar at that time. He would soon justify his presence in that talented side however, with a debut goal against Greenock Morton closely followed by an Old Firm winner in a 1-0 win helping him settle in the eyes of the fans. During this episode we discuss the career path that took him to Celtic, that fairytale Centenary Season, and his  special relationship with Celtic hero Tommy Burns - one that was formed even before they shared a dressing room at Celtic Park. We were also joined on this episode by Paul Cuddihy, current editor of The Celtic View (since 2001) and lifelong fan of the club, who shared his own recollections of that special season, culminating in that day at Hampden in May 1998. This episode first featured on The Celtic Exchange Plus where we provide pre and post match shows for each and every Celtic game as well as further special episodes. Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.Today I meet a legend of Scottish comedy, Mr Phil Differ.Since the 1980s, Phil has written and produced for some of the most memorable and iconic shows for stage and screen including Not The Nine O’Clock News, Spitting Image and Chewin The Fat.He’s perhaps best known for the long running Scottish football impression based satire - Only An Excuse, which began life on radio but transitioned to TV in 1993. In the following 27 years the show became a New Years Eve institution in Scotland - with main actor Jonathan Watson playing a host of characters including Frank McAvennie, Kenny Dalsglish and Sir Alex Ferguson just before the bells rang each year. In the podcast Phil talks to me about the show, his career and his latest play on the life of former Dundee United boss Jim McLean - which is rather aptly called Smile. The play is available to stream for a limited time on the Dundee Rep Theatre website - links to this here https://dundeerep.co.uk/whats-on/smileLater I asked Phil to pick three football shirts tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. We take a nostalgic look back at Scottish football in the sixties, with the hooped shirt Celtic wore in Lisbon in 67 and the national team goalkeeper jersey worn in the win over England at Wembley that sam year. We finish things off with a look at the Brazil shirts from the 1970 and 1982 world cups. Phil clearly loves his shirts. West Ham put the Blades to the sword with a thoroughly professional performance on Sunday thanks to a goal from under pressure frontman Sebastien Haller.  The Hammers could have had more if it wasn't for Jarrod Bowen's indecision and Tomas Soucek's missed sitter.  And Will Pugh (https://twitter.com/WilliamPugh_) , James Jones (https://twitter.com/ByJamesJones) and Tom Edwards (https://twitter.com/T0m_Edwards) discuss all of that and more as the lads are joined by West Ham's iconic Boys of '86 striker Frank McAvennie to give his views on the Hammers' current situation.  Frank was Tony Cottee's famous strike partner in the club's most successful season to date with the pair bagging a staggering 46 league goals between them as West Ham finished third. The Scot gives his views on David Moyes, Haller, Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals as well as his predictions for next Monday's game against Aston Villa.  And of course it would be criminal of the lads to let Frank go without asking him about his time at the club and boy did he deliver.  Some hilarious and engaging anecdotes about his time in East London including a belter about iconic manager John Lyall.  TV presenter and Aston Villa fan Tim Warwood also dialed in to talk Villa's visit to the London Stadium next Monday.  The Betway (https://twitter.com/betway) Charity bet section was back as always before a very tough round of Name That Game. And to wrap up, after Matt Beard left as manager of West Ham's Women team last week, the lads were joined by Geoff Longhurst - dad of West Ham Women's midfielder Kate Longurst and lifelong Hammers fan for the inside track on Matt's departure.  Please leave us a REVIEW and RATE and SUBSCRIBE to the podcast and our YouTube channel if you like what we do. This week, on the eve of Deadline Day, James Jones, Will  Pugh and Aaron Paul spent most of the show moaning about how much of a disgrace the club has been over the last week or so. From the defeat to Bournemouth all the way through to the thrashings at the hands of Wimbledon and Wolves, everything seems to be going wrong at the club again. And don't even get us started on Marko Arnautovic. The lads also take a breath to discuss transfer rumours and the team's chances against Liverpool on Monday night. (spoiler: they're not confident!) If all that's not enough to whet your whistle, then it's also worth noting the lads were joined on the phones by West Ham legends Frank McAvennie and Tony Carr, who both gave their views on recent events at the club, as well as what they think may happen for the rest of the season. Enjoy, and don't forget to rate and subscribe - a nice review would be lovely, too. Irons.

The Celtic Star Podcast: A Celtic State of Mind presents its 36th instalment of insightful discussion around the culture of Celtic Football Club, the city of Glasgow, and fans of the reigning treble-winning Scottish champions. This week, Paul John Dykes and Kevin Graham are joined by one of the heroes of Celtic's centenary season - Frank McAvennie. When Frank joined Celtic fromWest Ham in October 1987, he was undoubtedly one of English football's hottest properties. Billy McNeill had to splash out a club record fee to secure the flamboyant striker's services, but there is no doubt that he repaid every penny during that glorious double-winning season.None more so than in the 1988 Scottish Cup final when Frank scored a double as Celtic came from behind to clinch the league and cup double. He immortalised himself in Celtic's history that day, yet he cannot be seen on the stadiums fascia, which is decorated with images of club icons. This omission by the club is understandably something of a bugbear of Frank's, and he is candid when discussing his disappointment at being left out by Celtic's current incumbents. The 1980s pinup also speaks about his fallout with the Celtic board, his appearance at a criminal court following an Old Firm sending-off, and that gloriously sunny day at Hampden almost 30 years ago.A Celtic State of Mind has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few months, and there are many more guests lined up in the weeks ahead from the world of sport, music, film, art, broadcasting, literature and politics.Connect with A Celtic State of Mind @PaulDykes, @anorthernprose and @CelticStarPod and subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or through your podcast player.

It's 30 years since West Ham United's best-ever top-flight finish. That was Frank McAvennie's first season in English football and it was packed full of the most incredible stories. They're all here. The television black-out that made the summer signing from St Mirren almost anonymous in London despite leading the scoring charts; the team meeting that forged Frank's incredible partnership with Tony Cottee; the three-way fight for the title that would have gone down to the wire were it not for a certain Mr Dalglish; there are cameos from Terry Wogan and Denis Law; questions from Russell Brand; a special appreciation of a special man in John Lyall. And 30 years on, a sense of the impact those special seasons have on the footballers and fans who experience them. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We cover the period 1980 to 1990 when the Club enjoys a roller coaster ride of great successes and tragic failures. Relive the excitement of the decade on and off the field as we start with a Cup final victory against Rangers and end with another. The Hampden "riot" game and the Joe Miller Cup final nicely book-end ten years of romance for the Glasgow club. Who can forget the epic European games against Real Madrid, Ajax and Rapid Vienna while the club fight hard domestically to keep up with the upcoming "New Firm" of Aberdeen and Dundee United. Towards the end of the decade Scottish Football sees dramatic changes as Rangers finally get their act together and challenge everyone with their new regime but even they were unable to stop the Glory, Glory Bhoys from winning a double in their Centenary Year.
