Midfield maestro mesmerised a Hibs-daft kid… later, his wise counsel would salvage his fledgling career at Sir Alex's Aberdeen.Welcome to a new episode of the My Sporting Hero podcast, part of Nutmeg FC. The home of brilliant football stories — made in Scotland. In June, Nutmeg FC subscribers will enjoy a feast of exclusive content, including:* Daniel Gray's Slow Match Report from the Shelbourne v Shamrock Rovers League of Ireland clash.* Our tactics guy Adam Clery breaking down Scotland's double header with Iceland and Lichenstein.* The latest three-part investigation from Stephen McGowan.* Another Sporting Intelligence data dive.Only paid subscribers to Nutmeg FC get every piece we produce straight to their inbox. This time on My Sporting Hero, our guest is Gordon Strachan.Edinburgh-born Gordon was the midfield dynamo in Sir Alex Ferguson's mighty Aberdeen side of the early 1980s, winning two league titles, three Scottish Cups and, of course, the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup. He won the FA Cup with Manchester United before being reunited at Old Trafford with Ferguson, then captained Howard Wilkinson's Leeds United to the 1992 league title. Gordon won a half century of Scotland caps, and graced the dark blue at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.As well as managing Scotland — for five years — and three English clubs, Gordon led Celtic to six domestic trophies and deep into European competition. He has been a media analyst and has worked tirelessly for the good of the game of football, notably assisting hometown outfit Spartans FC.Gordon is currently technical director at the club he started out at, Dundee.Gordon's sporting hero is the great Pat Stanton, Hibernian's humble hero and the original midfield Mr Cool, Calm and Collected.Nutmeg FC | Substack This is a public episode. Dunfermline manager Neil Lennon sits down for a conversation with Brian McLauchlin about his life in the game, managing Celtic and Hibernian, and his future ambitions for the Fife club.
It's a podcast of two halves in this month's focus on all things women's football. We start off with Dave being joined by Charlie and Casey, before switching to Dave's chat with Eva Murray (which you may notice was recorded first!)Obviously the main focus is on the league success for Hibernian. There were of course other runners in the race, some more than others, and particularly the disappointment of outgoing champions Celtic finishing in fourth.Although Rangers missed out on the title on the final day, they did finish the season with a cup double, culminating in their Scottish Cup final victory on Sunday. That meant Glasgow City are once again trophyless, albeit they will have Champions League qualifying next season for finishing runners up in the league. At the other end of the table, it was Spartans who joined Queen's Park and Dundee United in being relegated to SWPL2 with Montrose confirming their top flight status on the final day as results went their way. Finally there's everyone's pick for team of the season, as well as a look ahead to the final two Nations League matches and a fond farewell to our retiring captain, Rachel Corsie. Thanks as always for listening!Bluesky - @sffpodcast.bsky.socialTwitter/X - @sffpodcastInstagram - sffpodcastTikTok - @sffpodcastFacebook - Scottish Football ForumsMastodon - @sffpodcast@mastodon.scotEmail - scottishfootballforumspodcast@gmail.com

This week, we're delighted to welcome Lee Johnson to the show. Lee has had a stellar career as both a player and manager, playing over 400 games before becoming the youngest manager in the Football League at 31 when he took over at Oldham in 2013. Since that first job he has managed some historic clubs including Sunderland, Bristol City, and Hibernian. After a tough year, leaving Hibs followed by a very brief spell at Fleetwood, Lee took the time out to reflect on the next stage of his career and gain some different experiences, from working with Manchester City's development squad, to going to Africa to source the best young talent. The life of a football manager is a pretty crazy one. You live on a knife edge; job security is not something that exists for 99.9%. Lee has been a victim of his own success on more than one occasion, over-achieving and setting new expectations that then need to be continuously met. Hire and fire culture is a reality of modern day football, but it's not a good one. What is it like being on the manager's end of the deal? A huge advocate of technology, data and modern coaching methods, this is a detailed review of life as a top level manager while also looking at an evolving football industry continuously in a state of unpredictable change. As always with the best football shows, topped off with some eye-opening stories! On today's show we discuss: Life as a Manager: From becoming the youngest manager in the Football League to taking a break following two sackings in a season, the ups and downs of management. What was the transition like when Lee made the step from being part of a dressing room to leading one? What is a manager's greatest anxiety? Learning from the best; how a relationship with Kenny Dalglish helped Lee establish his managerial career. ‘Sometimes football gives you a rest'. What is next for Lee now he has had some time out from the game? Why managing mavericks in the game is something a manager has to learn to use to the team's advantage. Managing Top Clubs: ‘Bristol City was a team for tomorrow'. What does Lee mean by this? The importance of balancing good business and player sales with ambition on the pitch and being able to compete. A manager can very quickly become a victim of their own success; how strong starts at Bristol City and Sunderland raised the bar of expectation for future results. How do you manage up? Why the relationship between manager and owner is crucial. Changing the goal line; how a job can be sold to a manager as one thing and be very different when you get there. What it was like beating Jose Mourinho and competing with Pep Guardiola in a historic Bristol City cup run. The State of Football: Are clubs making too many business decisions that are not based on sporting success? Data led recruitment has become the most important strategy in football, but are there other things to consider when signing a player? Should managers change their style when you get promoted to a new league? Our Partners: Orreco https://www.orreco.com/ Scan.com https://uk.scan.com/
We should be in for a cracker at Somerset Park under the lights on Friday night when Championship leaders, Ayr United host Hibernian. Greg is expecting a few goals in that one as well as wins for a couple of Premiership sides to make up a Scottish Cup Double.
In the windswept town of Islandmagee, County Antrim, in the year 1711, fear took root, and hysteria fanned the flames of injustice. Eight women—healers, widows, and outcasts—stood accused of witchcraft, charged with tormenting a young girl through dark sorcery. In an Ireland largely untouched by witch trials, this case became an eerie echo of Salem's horrors. As whispers turned to accusations, the trial unfolded with damning testimonies, spectral evidence, and the weight of superstition, as women turned to spiders, victims vomited pins and feathers and panic and politics conquered over reason.
