Christopher McLaughlin - The Cause for Tommy Burns – The First Step Toward Being Declared a Saint in the Catholic Church

Christopher McLaughlin joins us from Glasgow, Scotland and is one of the people heading up the Cause for Tommy Burns, hoping that Tommy will eventually be declared a saint in the Catholic Church. Christopher is our guest on this episode and shares his experiences and knowledge about the quest for Tommy's sainthood that many are praying for. Tommy was a professional soccer player, which in Scotland and most of the world, is called football. Tommy was a footballer for the famous, and beloved, Celtic team in Glasgow from 1975 to 1989 and later coached and managed the team. Tommy died in May of 2008 at the young age of 51 of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. He left behind his wife and four children. Christopher has a wealth of knowledge about Tommy, his life, and his humble and deep devotion to God and the Catholic faith. Christopher shares some history of Catholicism in Scotland and how it is intertwined with Celtic football. Tommy was very pious and humbly practiced corporal works of mercy throughout his life. According to Christopher, the love for Tommy was very apparent at his funeral, which included 40 priests and an estimated 20,000+ people. Christopher describes the process of opening a Cause for Sainthood according to the Church's Canon Law. The first step involves the bishop of the diocese where Tommy passed away. The final step, which could be a few years to hundreds of years away, culminates in the Pope declaring the person a saint. There are many steps and an enormous amount of prayer, research, and verification prior to a Pope declaring someone a saint. Opening a Cause for Sainthood does not guarantee Canonization, it often does not.  Christopher, and his fellow researcher Philip Church, are the “petitioners” in this process (see sainthood link below). They are asking for anyone who knew Tommy or is praying for an intercession from Tommy to contact them at contact@tommyburns.org Information about the process of sainthood in the Catholic Church: Saints | USCCB #catholicsports, #tommyburns, #celticfootball

GREIG ROBERTSON spent a fascinating 18 years at the Celtic Academy between 2003 - 2021, working in close quarters with several highly regarded club coaches such as Tommy Burns, Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy. In nearly two decades within the Academy he played a part in the development of some of Celtic's best known graduates such as Kieran Tierney, James Forrest and current club captain Callum McGregor, and more recently has guided the progress of the latest batch of exciting talent to emerge from Lennoxtown, including now Liverpool star Ben Doak. You don't spend that amount of time with elite level players if you yourself aren't an elite level coach and during his time at Celtic Grieg gained his UEFA Pro Licence as well as a Masters in Performance Coaching. His talents have now taken him to the role of Director of Coaching at Boston Bolts in the US, where he kindly gave up some of his time to discuss his Celtic journey with Tino (Note this episode was originally recorded in Summer 2022). It's an entertaining, enjoyable and insightful discussion on what goes on behind the scenes at Lennoxtown and on what it really takes to make it as a young footballer at Celtic. This is a must listen for fans of Celtic, and for sports fans in general. 12-26-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this show talking about the predicament New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen is. Players and Agents are taking his contract offers to other teams to match. John asks how much money would it have taken to get Yoshinobu Yamamato to come to the Mets? $350 million? 400 million? 434 million? And if he gave him that number, the press would have been critical. Ultimately, the pitcher went to the team he wanted to sign with, something he probably was conscious of all along. John then discusses the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the latter led by Baker Mayfield. John believes both teams will be dangerous in the NFC postseason and is keeping receipts. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John spends some time talking about Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns, and the former becoming the first African American to win the World Heavyweight Championship, and then a little bit about Babe Ruth, some NFL and AFL Champions, Chuck Noll, Carlton Fisk, Ozzie Smith, NHL Hall of Famer Defenseman Doug Harvey, Allie Reynolds, Reggie White, and Phil Niekro.

Not only is Pollack a renowned boxing historian, but he is also a referee, judge, and publisher with his own law firm. Despite his numerous roles, he still finds time to immerse himself in the world of boxing and share his knowledge with enthusiasts. Pollack's passion for boxing history began at a young age, fueled by his fascination with old-time fights on video. Unsatisfied with the information available in existing books, he took it upon himself to dive deep into primary sources, unearthing the most detailed and accurate accounts of historical bouts. In 2006, Pollack published his first biography, shedding light on the life of the first gloved heavyweight champion, John L. Sullivan. Since then, he has continued his journey through boxing's rich history, chronicling the ring exploits of champions such as James J. Corbett, Bob Fitzsimmons, James J. Jeffries, Marvin Hart, Tommy Burns, and Jack Johnson, among others. His acclaimed "In the Ring With" series has earned rave reviews for its meticulous research and vivid storytelling. Throughout the episode, Pollack shares his insights into the early boxing pioneers, marveling at their endurance, toughness, and skill. His writing not only provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of these legendary fighters but also challenges conventional perceptions and sheds new light on their careers. Beyond the ring, Pollack's day job takes him to the courtroom as a defense attorney, demonstrating his dedication to justice both inside and outside the squared circle. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the rich history of boxing with Adam J. Pollack on Ring Talk with Lou Eisen. In the first episode of our new Celtic Relived series we were joined by Billy Stark – an important and hugely popular member of Celtic's Double winning Centenary Team. Billy McNeill had returned to the club as manager ahead of the 1987/88 season and made Billy Stark his first signing as the club attempted to wrestle back the title from Rangers having finished without a trophy the season before. Billy played a vital part in the club's success in that special season, ultimately finishing 3rd top scorer behind Andy Walker and Frank McAvennie, and for those who recall was instrumental in our comeback win over Dundee United in that memorable Scottish Cup Final. As a player that Alex Ferguson signed twice (for St Mirren & Aberdeen) Billy was in the twilight of his career at 30 years of age when he eventually put pen to paper for Celtic, and his signing perhaps flew under the radar at that time. He would soon justify his presence in that talented side however, with a debut goal against Greenock Morton closely followed by an Old Firm winner in a 1-0 win helping him settle in the eyes of the fans. During this episode we discuss the career path that took him to Celtic, that fairytale Centenary Season, and his  special relationship with Celtic hero Tommy Burns - one that was formed even before they shared a dressing room at Celtic Park. We were also joined on this episode by Paul Cuddihy, current editor of The Celtic View (since 2001) and lifelong fan of the club, who shared his own recollections of that special season, culminating in that day at Hampden in May 1998. This episode first featured on The Celtic Exchange Plus where we provide pre and post match shows for each and every Celtic game as well as further special episodes. Simon Donnelly needs no introduction to Celtic fans and he joins Milish for a chat on the Celtic Soul Podcast as the bhoys preview this Sunday's big game when Celtic take on the rangers at Celtic Park. Both bhoys will be inside Celtic Park for kick off . Simon will be on media duties with Celtic TV and Milish will be watching with his mates from the main stand.During the conversation Simon draws comparisons with the team that stopped Rangers winning 10IAR and the current Celtic team. Both Wim Jansen and Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic Park from Japan with little known about them in coaching terms, both had to bring plenty of new blood into the squads. In 1997 iconic manager Tommy Burns left and Captain Paul McStay retired after failing to stop Rangers doing 9IAR. Both are Celtic Legends and are still very much in the hearts of all Celtic fans who witnessed their loyalty and love of Celtic Another pair of Celtic Legends Neil Lennon and Scott Brown both moved on after failing to win the 10IAR last season. Like Wim, Ange introduced a new captain with a history at the club and brought in his own players and is now in the driving seat to repeat the double won by Wim Jansen and his all conquering team who stopped the 10. Some of the players Wim introduced included player of year Craig Burley, Champions League winner, Paul Lambert, Marc Rieper and the Magnificent 7, Henrik Larsson who Simon played upfront with and he shares how that partnership came about. GREIG ROBERTSON spent a fascinating 18 years at the Celtic Academy between 2003 - 2021, working in close quarters with a number of highly regarded club coaches such as Tommy Burns, Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy. In nearly two decades within the Academy he played a part in the development of some of Celtic's best known graduates such as Kieran Tierney, James Forrest and current club captain Callum McGregor, and more recently has guided the progress of the latest batch of exciting talent to emerge from Lennoxtown, including Ben Doak, Dane Murray and of course Karamoko Dembele. You don't spend that amount of time with elite level players if you yourself aren't an elite level coach and during his time at Celtic Grieg gained his UEFA Pro Licence as well as a Masters in Performance Coaching. His talents have now taken him to the role of Director of Coaching at Boston Bolts in the US, where he kindly gave up over an hour of his time to discuss his Celtic journey with Tino this week. It's an entertaining, enjoyable and insightful discussion on what goes on behind the scenes at Lennoxtown and on what it really takes to make it as a young footballer at Celtic. This is a must listen for fans of Celtic, and for sports fans in general. Enjoy! If you're enjoy this episode of The Celtic Exchange please support us by sharing far and wide with your fellow Celtic supporters - it really makes a big difference to what we do. Thanks, Team TCE.

Raymond Sparkes is UK's longest serving football agent, having been in the business since 1991. At one point he represented 8 of 11 players in the Celtic line-up. Further, he brokered the first two Bosman deals in the UK. He recently completed his Master of Sports Directorship. In this candid and in-depth conversation, Raymond talks to Ciaran and Markus about how the industry has changed since he had to put up a 100k bond to become an agent, the delicacy of managing clients and the main reason a career can break down, the all-importance of knowing "what good looks like", the type of players he looks for and why, transitioning to a different generation of players,  the accuracy of Jerry Maguire, and the art of strategic positioning from a network and commercial perspective with a certain David Beckham as an example + plenty of anecdotes!Follow BroPod on Twitter @BroPod1 and Facebook. A modest marksman with an eye for the big moments, Tom Brown's rapid albeit belated rise from junior football in the summer of 1993 marked a new beginning. Following several ultimately unsuccessful attempts to realise his dream of professional status, it was another ‘TB', the iconic Tommy Burns, who took a low stakes gamble (£160 per week low) by inviting Tom to train with the club for an extended trial period. Those battling qualities Killie fans came to admire in four successful years with the club secured a contract and a shot at Premier Division football. And what a start it was. An injury to Bobby Williamson resulted in the number 9 shirt hanging on Tom Brown's Rugby Park peg for Kilmarnock's first game of their long-awaited return to the topflight. One smart, instinctive finish later and he's in the Sunday Mail team of the week! A fast start to a journey which ended at Hampden Park in May 1997…   www.killiehistories.com/tombrown

Gouldy will be remembered as the unsung hero who came from 3rd choice goalkeeper at Bradford to Celtic first choice stopper in the 1997/98 season when Celtic stopped Rangers doing 101AR and he only conceded 24 goals during that roller coaster campaign under Wim Jansen. He also won a treble with Martin O'Neill and a League Cup under Kenny Dalglish and Tommy Burns to add to his first League Cup he won in his first season and went to the World Cup with Scotland in an amazing career from Non-League Football to 60,000 at Celtic Park. He served under 5 managers at Celtic including John Barnes and was the goalkeeper during that infamous night against ICT and he knows a thing or two about our new manager Ange Postecoglou who he came against during his time coaching in Australia where he always came off second best against Ange's invisible team. We were delighted to be joined in the studio recently by Michael Burns and Davie Carswell who are bringing The Tommy Burns Story to Celtic Park in November of this year. As you can imagine this has very much been a labour of love for everyone involved in the project and it was a privilege to learn more of Tommy through the lens of his family via Michael. Davie also provided some tales of his own admiration for Tommy as well as some background of the play and on how it first came to be. As you'll hear this is about so much more than Tommy Burns the footballer, and instead is centred on Tommy Burns the man, and the legacy he leaves behind. It's now been over 13 years since Tommy's sad passing in May 2008 but his memory continues to burn as brightly as ever. More information on the play, which runs at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park from 9th– 13th November, can be found at https://www.thetommyburnsstory.co.uk/ A percentage of proceeds from the play will be donated to Celtic FC Foundation
