Wes Craven once heard a story about people who avoided sleep for fear of dying in their nightmares; along with a childhood bully and a step-father, it inspired him to create an iconic character who's haunted us all for 40 years. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), child murderer, comes to thin lipped Tina (Amanda Wyss) with his wet face and knife glove in her nightmares, scaring her so badly she warns best friend, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) who's had the same dream. Not wanting to be alone, Tina has a spend-over with Nancy, her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp), Tina's rough boyfriend, Rod (Jsu Garcia) shows up uninvited and she ends up slashed to death after a night of a pretty okay weinering. Rod is arrested by Nancy's father, Lt. Thompson (John Saxon). Nancy's drunken orange mother, Marge (Roni Blakley) must now come to terms with her part in the vigilante justice that resulted in the death of Freddy, causing him to come back for his children in A Nightmare on Elm Street. A 40 year celebration, dedicated to the memory of Kathleen Garcia, the gal that started it all The ultimate nightmare, this week on Doom Generation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/doomgeneration/support

The Slasher film is easily one of the most popular subgenres in all of cinema. The genre's roots begin with Hitchcock's desire to modernize the horror genre by taking it out of European castles and removing werewolves and vampires. 1960's Psycho and Peeping Tom are true predecessors to 1978's Halloween. That being said, Halloween is seen as the first film to solidify what would become the slasher formula. Just six years later, A Nightmare On Elm Street shows the evolution of the genre featuring a comedic and vocal antagonist which departed from the silent stalkers embodied by Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees. It doesn't matter how fast you run, Episode 0034 of Movie Wars will find you. TUDW Episode 39 – A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) On this episode I'm joined by Jae Prowse (@FreddyFenech) and we are talking Wes Craven's A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) Jae is huge fan of classic & cult horror. He is proprietor of It's Happening Again! and contributor at @NOFSpodcast, @VHSRevival and Dread Central. In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp) solve the puzzle before it's too late? Release date: 12 July 1985 (United Kingdom) Director: Wes Craven Screenplay: Wes Craven Box office: 25.5 million USD (US) Budget: 1.8 million USD On What The Wookie Watch I solo review Wishmaster (1997), Contamination (1980) and Nazi Dawn (2008) Don't forget to subscribe on SoundCloud and ITunes and leave us some 5 star reviews. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. A return of sorts to the darker tone of the original, this flick involves Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) trying to get back into the real world through our pregnant hero Alice's (Lisa Wilcox) unborn son. We get some baffling dream sequences inspired by Monty Python's Meaning of Life, comic books, and H.R. Giger. Mat enjoys playing the video game South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Inspired by a handful of episodes where the South Park kids dress up as superheroes, the game features better game mechanics than South Park: The Stick of Truth, although re-used maps and assets make it feel less fresh than the original. Thrasher enjoys the first feature length (!!) part of MovieBob's breakdown of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Listen to this episode while feasting on your own innards for maximum enjoyment. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher discuss A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, the highest grossing film in the series. Blade wielding child killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) bumps off the heroes from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors, but not before Kristen (Tuesday Knight) transfers her powers to Alice (Lisa Wilcox). Alice tries to warn her friends about Freddy, but he's growing stronger by the minute. Can she wield the title of The Dream Master? Directed by Renny Harlin (Exorcist: The Beginning), this flick amps up the humor and tones down the horror. Its dream sequences and shot compositions are some of the best in the series even though the main story is rote at best. The middle entry in the "Dream Warrior Trilogy", this is the motion picture most people are thinking of when you ask them about A Nightmare on Elm Street. Mat caught the acclaimed horror social thriller Get Out on HBO. Living up to the hype, Get Out is a slow burn of a satire, allowing viewers to get to know the characters before crazy shit starts to go down. Writer-director Jordan Peele (Little Fockers) pays more than a little homage to the original The Stepford Wives movie, but he does it so well it's no wonder this became a smash hit. Thrasher turned on a well-known turkey by watching both versions of the regrettable Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny. An odd mixture of a fairy tale adaptation and a Christmas film, this one's only for the quite curious. Listen to this episode while trying to twirling around your nunchaku during a montage for maxium enjoyment.
