Today on Salt Lake Dirt I welcome back Bruce Wagner. If you listened to our last episode with Bruce you know that he is one of my favorite authors. He was kind enough to return to talk about his latest novel ROAR: American Master, The Oral Biography of Roger Orr. ROAR recently came out on Arcade Publishing and it's the kind of book that I didn't want to end - it is simply that good. I highly recommend it. Thanks for listening! --- Synopsis of Roar (Source: Arcade Publishing): A new novel by Hollywood's "master of satire." The myth of an epic, public life—its triumphs and tragedies—is a particularly American obsession. ROAR is a metafictional exploration of such a life and attendant fame of an extraordinary, and completely made up, man. Born in Nashville in 1940 and adopted by a wealthy San Francisco couple, Roger Orr—“Roar”—became an underground stand-up comedian with a cult following while still in his teens, segueing to an acclaimed songwriter in the Sixties. In the decades that followed, his talent spanned the worlds of entertainment, from film directing and books to fine art (paintings, sculpture). His promethean energies expanded to the world of medicine; he became a dermatologist, the first to patent cadaver skin for burn victims. A spiritual seeker who returned to India throughout his life, Roar was also a voracious lover of both men and women. The journey of Roger Orr was a premonition of the cultural earthquakes to come. It wasn't until his 40s that Roar learned his birth mother was black and it wasn't until his early 60s when he began the hormonal treatment and surgeries that chipped away at the armor covering what he always knew was his true identity: that of a woman. Roar's saga is best told by a cacophony of voices—family members, critics, historians, and the famous (Meryl Streep, Amanda Gorman, Dave Chappelle, Andy Warhol)—including some heard from the grave. In ROAR, Wagner brilliantly paints a vivid picture of one man, our times, and our culture's enduring obsession with fame. Due to the critical failure surrounding “Nightmare on Elm Street 2,” New Line Cinema was hesitant to green light a third film in the franchise but when original creator Wes Craven decided to come back on board to help write the script, the studio decided to move forward with the project. Craven's idea centered around a third and final film that would conclude the series, especially considering he didn't initially plan on making any movies past the first one. His original script actually involved Freddy Krueger crossing over to the real world and tormenting the actors making a “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel. The studio shot that down, although Craven eventually got his wish to make that film a few years later. Craven eventually teamed with writer Bruce Wagner to come up with the concept for the film, which initially started out as a much darker take on Freddy and the teens he was going after in their dreams. Ultimately, the studio opted to go in a different direction with more outrageous dream sequences mixed in with some seriously dark humor. What resulted was a story about a group of kids locked away in a psych ward after each of them dealt with horrendous night terrors but it turns out they were all being haunted by the same man in their dreams…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to crank up the Dokken and load up on hypnocil as we discuss “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”…

Welcome to the final episode of Wake Island! Bruce Wagner is on the show. BRUCE WAGNER is a novelist and screenwriter known for his apocalyptic yet spiritual view of humanity as seen through the lens of Hollywood. His books include: Force Majeure, Dead Stars, I'm Losing You, Wild Palms (graphic novel), I'll Let You Go, Still Holding, The Chrysanthemum Palace, Memorial, The Empty Chair, I Met Someone, A Guide For Murdered Children (writing as Sarah Sparrow), and ROAR: American Master - The Oral Biography of Roger Orr. Bruce was a co writer on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987). David Cronenberg adapted his screenplay into the movie Map to the Stars, starring Julianne Moore, John Cusack, and Robert Pattinson. Wagner and Oliver Stone co-executive produced Wild Palms, the mini-series Wagner created, based on a comic strip that he wrote for Details magazine. Wild Palms aired on ABC in 1993. Wagner signed a book deal with Counterpoint Press in 2019 for his novel The Marvel Universe: Origin Stories. When he turned in the manuscript, Wagner said that the editor and publisher told him "the language is problematic." One of their objections was to the word "fat" - a 500-lb. character in the novel playfully calls herself "The Fat Joan" (an homage to the popular social media personality "The Fat Jew") - and stated that "not even a character can call herself that." The writer Sam Wasson wrote about the book's journey in Graydon Carter's digital magazine AirMail ("Bruce Wagner's Woke Universe"), suspecting that Wagner's editor had been cautioned by "sensitivity readers." In the same article, Wasson quotes Wagner as saying, "My entire body of work would be thrown into a furnace if it were to be read and judged by sensitivity readers." On October 13, 2020, Wagner decided that rather than look for another publisher, he would release the novel for free, on brucewagner.la, and into the public domain. BLURBS: “He is a visionary posing as a farceur.” - Salman Rushdie “Wagner is a James Joyce whose Dublin is Hollywood.” David Cronenberg “Bruce Wagner's stories about Hollywood are the best I've read since F. Scott Fitzgerald and Nathanael West.” - Terry Southern “Wagner writes like a wizard. His prose writhes and coruscates.” - John Updike LINKS: You can download a free copy of the Marvel Universe here or buy a physical copy online at Amazon. Children of the New Flesh c/o 11:11. Dream Warriors is arguably the fan favorite A Nightmare on Elm Street film, but have you read the early script by Wes Craven and Bruce Wagner? It is very different, but still with some similarities and even a few potential influences on the later films in the franchise. The script is very dark and worth checking out. We're re-opening our case file on the Springwood Slasher to investigate what might be the fan favorite entry in this franchise - A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Although the second film had been poorly received by fans and critics, its box office earnings proved that there was still enough interest in this property to warrant another installment. And who better to provide the necessary course correction the studio was looking for than the man who had created all of this in the first place? After sitting out the first sequel, Wes Craven returned with a bold new vision for where to take the series. A little too bold it turns out. The initial script he co-wrote with Bruce Wagner contained all of the foundational elements that wound up in the finished product, but with a MUCH darker tone. We explore Craven's original take on the Dream Warriors concept, why New Line Cinema didn't go for it, and how his departure from the project ultimately set the stage for this to transform into the movie we all know and love today. Other topics include: how Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont reworked the Craven/Wagner script in just eleven days, the fine line they manage to walk with the film's tone, New Line's initial concerns that the filmmakers might be going too far with the more humorous elements, how Dream Warriors set the template for subsequent sequels, what our dream powers would be, our favorite sequences in the movie, and much more! Bruce Wagner, a successful Hollywood screenwriter and the author of twelve novels, has been a beloved literary figure for decades, especially in his home city of Los Angeles. His most recent novel, The Marvel Universe, was enthusiastically acquired by a small press until, he says, the publisher objected to certain "problematic" language, specifically the word "fat," which a character uses to describe herself. This led Bruce to release the book into the public domain by making it available on his website for free. In this conversation, Bruce talks about how a public domain release differs from self-publishing, how sensitivity readers are setting the tone for much of the culture now, and what this means for artists who are drawn to the more monstrous qualities of the human condition.   Guest Bio: Bruce Wagner is the author of twelve novels, including Dead Stars, I'm Losing You, and I'll Let You Go. Welcome to the Coffee Break podcast, where hosts, Child Support Chief Attorney, Bruce Wagner and Child Support Deputy Director, Nathan Hartel talk about topics that will help you understand the Child Support program just a little easier by bringing you coffee break sips of Child Support knowledge. This Coffee Break episode is a special one, as it is the finale to Season Two. But that’s not the only thing that makes this episode special; the hosts have a special announcement: your Coffee Break host, Bruce has announced his retirement from DCSS! (1:20) This is Bruce’s final podcast with Coffee Break; but don’t worry, the Coffee Break’s will continue in Season 3, with Nathan as a solo host, along with special guests. As this podcast serves as a farewell and thank you to Bruce, it also served as a final opportunity to interview Bruce and have him share some of his best insight regarding the Child Support program. This interview also served as a reminder as to why the podcast was created, and that is to showcase what the customer experience with DCSS should be. (3:30) A little about your host, Bruce Wagner: did you know he was a math teacher? Yes, Mr. Wagner, high school teacher. (7:00) Who would have known he would later hold a career as a Child Support Attorney with the District Attorney’s division? Bruce talks about the greatest changes that occurred in the Child Support program within the transition of DCSS separating from the D.A.’s division, into its own entity under the Human Services division. (8:15) Through the lifespan of DCSS, the focus has changed into what can be done to help the parents/caretakers meet the requirements of their Child Support order. (9:50) The most important piece of information that Bruce can provide is this, “Child Support is not a science, it is an art. The most important aspect is to be honest, caring, and willing to work together, not only with the other parent/caretaker, but with the Child Support representatives, focusing on what is best for the child(ren); being heard and valued.” (15:40) Part of this approach to focus on what is best for the child(ren), also takes place in court. The Child Support attorneys do not advocate for either parent/caretaker. The attorneys present information to the commissioner, to narrow down the issue for a more efficient process. Child Support attorneys are impartial and work with both parents. (19:00) And as the final farewell, Bruce speaks on the most rewarding part of the Child Support program: providing quality service, being as fair as possible, and doing whatever DCSS can do to get an appropriate court order that will work for the parents and help improve the lives of the child(ren). This is not only in Riverside, but it is a focus for Child Support departments statewide. (23:50) Now, Mr. Wagner’s cup of coffee is empty, and he has no more refills. Best retirement wishes! Now as should our listeners, Bruce will subscribe as a Coffee Break podcast listener, and looks forward to listening to future episodes with many guests to the show in Season 3. Subscribe and stay tuned.

Riverside County Department of Child Support Services (RivCoDCSS) provides information regarding office operations during the COVID-19 pandemic during this episode. Nathan Hartel, Deputy Director, and Bruce Wagner, Chief Attorney kick off season 2 virtually because of the impact related to COVID-19. Our offices have closed to the public, and as of May 15th, our branches are now open for TouchPay Kiosk payments (4:00). Riverside, Indio, and Blythe allow 1-2 customers in the lobby for TouchPay Kiosk payments only. Despite our physical locations being closed to the public, our staff is available to assist you virtually anywhere (5:00). Customers can contact us by phone, or by visiting our website and activating our LiveChat. Our staff is working remotely at full capacity to assist our customers with their child support needs. Our Chief Attorney, Bruce Wagner, mentions court closures that will remain closed for an undetermined point in time (6:28). There has also been a rise in different payment options such as; MoneyGram, PayNearMe, and PayPal (7:25). At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, our office recognized the importance of communication with our customers and staff. As an agency, we realized that our approach to phone calls needed to change because of the current circumstances. Interactions with our customers are different, and instead of focusing on payments, our priority is their well-being (9:10). Our staff is reaching out to customers asking if they were impacted by COVID-19 in any way and how they can help. Deputy Director, Nathan Hartel, mentions enforcement remedies that have changed during the recent pandemic (10:45). There has been a more loosened approach to bank levies, and Driver's License suspensions that have all been directed by the State. Our department must abide by court order, and communicating your needs will help our staff remain informed of a change in circumstance (13:30). Modifications may still be requested if there has been a change in circumstance (15:00). Bruce also mentions how modifications are done while the courts remain closed (16:20). Court hearings are also mentioned, along with how to prepare (18:30). If you are on the calendar for a court date, our staff will contact you by telephone as long as contact information is up to date. Our staff will review your case with you over the phone. Please have financial information ready, an expense declaration filled out, and visitation information (21:20). Child Support currently still is garnishing 25% of unemployment income (22:48). What's next for our department is that customers can continue to receive excellent customer service virtually until the pandemic winds down. Our department is focused on new and innovative ways to serve our customers while the county aligns with office reopening guidelines (27:00). We want to encourage customers to continue reaching out to RivCoDCSS with any questions by phone, email, or on our LiveChat. Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont (Rare Bird) Set in two iconic locales—Hollywood's legendary Chateau Marmont and luxurious Fresno's Forestiere's Underground Garden—Waiting for Lipchitz at Chateau Marmont is a bold and colorful critique of the California Dream through the perspective of a once-upon-a-time successful screenwriter and wealth that taunts him. Caught between John O'Brien's Better and, perhaps, a Christopher Guest adaptation of Waiting for Godot, Janigian's Lipchitz is a new take on the absent protagonist and what's inevitably illuminated by its void. Praise for Waitng for Lipchitz at the Chateu Marmont ''Waiting for Lipchitz at the Chateu Marmont is a marvel, a novel full of tilts and torque, wild fulminations and mordant shrugs. Beneath the stunningly limber prose quivers a rare and compelling tenderness for our irrevocably damaged, irrevocably beautiful world" —Arthur Nersesian, author of The Fuck-Up and Gladyss of the Hunt "Waiting for Lipchitz the Chateau Marmont is a novel of ideas, or more precisely two 'thought novellas' braided through one another. One does involve waiting for Lipchitz, a producer of 'quality' pictures, at the Chateau. It is the rumination of a more-than-slightly desperate screenwriter, by turns hilarious and despairing, on the demise of Los Angeles and its narcissistic denizens, told in a decadent Industry noir to rival the guilty pleasures of Bret Easton Ellis or Bruce Wagner. Cutting across the grain of that pungent inner dialogue, however, is the same scribe’s recollection of a friendship and long-running conversation with John Hirschman, a larger-than-life raconteur in his own right, recently 'self-exiled' to Fresno. Here, in the flat heat, hidden gardens and agricultural bounty of the Central Valley, Janigian finds a voice closer to Saroyan and Steinbeck, and a California that can still sate more substantial human hungers. As the novel progresses, a sharply observed late-Hollywood parody, in which all 'art' has burned down to the hollow cinders of commodity, gives way to a beautifully turned meditation on the possibility of a more truly commodious life. WL@CM captures two Californias at a time when they have never been less coincident. Janagian serves up a brilliantly bipolar mix of memory and observation, fury and speculation, a story that may free his waiting screenwriter from false tethers to an overhyped city, even as it ties the author fast to a vast, prodigious, if lately unsung state."—Joe Day, author of Corrections and Collections: Architectures for Art and Crime Aris Janigian is author of three previous novels, Bloodvine, Riverbig, and This Angelic Land. He is also co-author along with April Greiman of Something from Nothing, a book on the philosophy of graphic design. A Ph.D. in psychology, from 1993 to 2005 he was senior professor of Humanities at Southern California Institute of Architecture. He has published in genres as diverse as poetry, social psychology, and design criticism. He was a contributing writer to West, the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine, a finalist for the William Saroyan Fiction Prize, and the recipient of the Anahid Literary Award from Columbia University.
