This week we're auditioning for the role of a lifetime as DePALMBER: PART DE continues with another example of what feels like well-worn territory for our man of the month: an erotic thriller in which a working class man in show business is forced to be an unlikely hero as he becomes entangled in a murder. It's 1984's Body Double, directed, produced, and co-written from a story by Brian De Palma, and starring Craig Wasson, Melanie Griffith, Gregg Henry, Deborah Shelton, Guy Boyd and Dennis Franz. As De Palma's immediate follow-up to Scarface, it's a brazenly bizarre swing on what was surely a blank check opportunity, and we have to admire the effort. Dripping in Hitchcockian influence with a plot that plays like Rear Window and Vertigo at the same time, it's another terrific showcase of that 80s cool De Palma style that would be pillaged decades later in the Grand Theft Auto video games. Plus: J Mo goes knives out on Wicked, having been held hostage by it for nearly three hours. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Body Double is not currently streaming in Canada but can be rented on YouTube for $5. Other works referenced in this episode include The Producers (2005), Avengers Endgame, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremact, Doubt, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (1962), The Fog (2005), Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Super 8, The Fablemans, West Side Story (2021), Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex & A Few Things In Between, Batman Returns, Batman & Robin, The Game, North by Northwest and Deep Water, among others. We take a quick break from De Palma next week, as our final release before Christmas Day means it's time to celebrate Shaqmas once again! Our annual holiday tradition of covering a selection from the filmography of Shaquille O'Neal continues this year with what is surely the best movie he ever made: 1994's Blue Chips, directed by William Friedkin and co-starring Nick Nolte. And our DePalmber Canon Entry at the end of the month is 1981's Blow Out! Until next week, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week we have a look at the 1981 horror film Ghost Story directed by John Irvin. This is Episode #448! Ghost Story is a 1981 American supernatural horror film directed by John Irvin and starring Fred Astaire, Melvyn Douglas, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., John Houseman, Craig Wasson, and Alice Krige. Based on the 1979 novel of the same name by Peter Straub, it follows a group of elderly businessmen in New England who gather to recount their involvement in a woman's death decades prior when one of them suspects her ghost has been haunting him.Ghost Story was the final film for Astaire and Fairbanks, the final completed film for Douglas and the first film to feature Michael O'Neill. The film was shot in Woodstock, Vermont; Saratoga Springs, New York; and at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. This week on Remainders we continue De Palma Days and talk about 1984 film Body Double. Possibly De Palma's most Hitchcockian film, it's the story of a man caught in between voyeurism and murder – essential Hitchcock tropes. We discuss its horror and pornographic elements, De Palma's use of over-the-top acting and direction style, lead actor Craig Wasson's effectiveness as the lead, Melanie Griffith's introduction to Hollywood, and where it stands in De Palma's filmography.Other topics include Air and the Affleck brothers, Renfield, a legendary encounter with the great Leslie Nielson, the legitimacy of TMZ and CNN, the Twilight Zone, Stuart Gordon, monster movies and creature features, 80s special effects, and whether James Cameron brought Dee Dee Ramone pizza.Songs of the WeekDown About It by The LemonheadsAnything Could Happen by The CleanRemainders Podcast Jukebox WebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

On this episode of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VIC DIAZ? we're heading into the jungle with Filipino thespian Vic Diaz in the 1978 Vietnam war drama THE BOYS IN COMPANY C, starring Stan Shaw, Andrew Stevens, and Craig Wasson. It's pretty good, and very different than the usual fair we cover on this podcast. CHECK IT OUT!

Due to the critical failure surrounding “Nightmare on Elm Street 2,” New Line Cinema was hesitant to green light a third film in the franchise but when original creator Wes Craven decided to come back on board to help write the script, the studio decided to move forward with the project. Craven's idea centered around a third and final film that would conclude the series, especially considering he didn't initially plan on making any movies past the first one. His original script actually involved Freddy Krueger crossing over to the real world and tormenting the actors making a “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel. The studio shot that down, although Craven eventually got his wish to make that film a few years later. Craven eventually teamed with writer Bruce Wagner to come up with the concept for the film, which initially started out as a much darker take on Freddy and the teens he was going after in their dreams. Ultimately, the studio opted to go in a different direction with more outrageous dream sequences mixed in with some seriously dark humor. What resulted was a story about a group of kids locked away in a psych ward after each of them dealt with horrendous night terrors but it turns out they were all being haunted by the same man in their dreams…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to crank up the Dokken and load up on hypnocil as we discuss “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”…

Recorded 10.13.21 at Hilarities in Cleveland, OH On this week's episode, it was the gang's first time back on the road in two years and they were pumped to chat about the totally bonkers slasher sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors! How ridiculous is it that this actor looks exactly like Bill Maher? Why couldn't we get a little more with that eerie Freddy puppet? And why does Larry Fishburne just vanish from the film entirely? PLUS: Check out that sweet Dokken video if you want a super-thorough re-cap of this movie! A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors stars Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Craig Wasson, Patricia Arquette, Ken Sagoes, Rodney Eastman, Jennifer Rubin, Bradley Gregg, Ira Heiden, Penelope Sudrow, Priscilla Pointer, Laurence Fishburne, and John Sason; directed by Chuck Russell. This week we take to the jungles of Vietnam as Burt Lancaster commands an embattled MAAG unit advising their South Vietnamese allies. Set in 1964, and based on war correspondent Daniel Ford's novel Incident at Muc Wa. Go Tell The Spartans offers an interesting look at an early period of the Vietnam War that we don't often get to see. Directed by Ted Post and staring Craig Wasson, Jonathan Goldsmith, Marc Singer, Joe Unger, Evan C. Kim and James Hong. Follow us on Twitter @FightingOnFilm and on Facebook. Actor/Musician/Voice Over Artist Craig Wasson joins James Kent (The Movie Morlock) to discuss the 1979 film, The Outsider. This little-seen gem is a stark depiction of the political turmoil in Northern Ireland during The Troubles in the early 1970s. Filmed while the conflict was still in full-force, both sides took issues with the film's unsparring portrayal of the lengths factions will go to see their goals met. Caught in the middle is Wasson's idealistic American Viet-Nam veteran who finds himself a disposal pawn to further each's cause. Wasson gives listeners an inside peak into the making of this film, and shares some additional tales of his adventures over the years. You'll definitely want to check out this episode.

It's back to nightmareville this week as we return to the classic Elm Street franchise with the 3rd installment: Dream Warriors, released February 27th, 1987. Completely ignoring the events of the second movie, we see the return of Nancy Thompson as she trains a group of teens to harness their dream powers and defeat Freddy once and for all. A lot of people considered this to be one of the best horror sequels at the time. We give it a watch to see if it holds up! Christian Walters (The Survivor Typecast, and The Burlington Friendship Society podcast) joins me to discuss the 1981 horror film GHOST STORY. Starring an amazing cast featuring Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and (fresh from Chariots of Fire) Alice Krige. Craig Wasson takes on dual roles as Don and David Wanderly. It's got greasy rotten corpses, flapping falling penis shots, and John Houseman telling ghost stories. What's not to love? We also discuss the book by Peter Straub, which is an incredible Lovecraftian tale of much more depth and with many more ghost stories in it.
In this special episode, Julian Palmer, the man behind the great video essay channel The Discarded Image, joins Manuela to celebrate their shared birthdays on January 29th and their shared passion for Brian De Palma by talking about his 1984 film about acting, BODY DOUBLE! They discuss De Palma's artificiality, his reverence to Hitchcock and Godard, his ingenious casting of Craig Wasson in the lead role, his use of women in his films, and why BODY DOUBLE is Manuela's favourite movie. Follow The Discarded Image at https://www.youtube.com/c/TheDiscardedImageChannel
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Ghost Story. Body Double. These are a few of the iconic genre films from the 1980s people remember, and on part 2 of SWS's interview with Craig Wasson he tells us stories from all of three of them. And tune in to find out which host, James or Teal, had a crush on Heather Langenkamp.
Craig Wasson is a name many will recognize from some key films in the 1980s, from Body Double to Ghost Story and Nightmare on Elm Street. Wasson was certainly a favorite of Both James and Teal, and through a bit of luck, and an introduction made by their friend Al, Wasson was kind enough to come on Stuff We've Seen. This is the first of two episodes featuring guest, Craig Wasson. In this episode Wasson talks about how he got started with acting, and you'll hear how some coincidences, luck, and talent with the guitar got him started on his acting journey. We'll cover Wasson's early work in Boys in Company C and Go Tell the Spartans, to his breakthrough role in a real hidden gem of a film, 1981's Four Friends, directed by Arthur Penn. Along the way, you'll hear some spot-on Wasson impersonations of some legendary actors, and some great stories from an actor whose 70s-80s filmography is worth further exploration.
Tis’ the season for scary movies even if 2020 has been one big nightmare. Speaking of nightmares! For week 1 of our Halloween Movie Month, Jon Gabrus (High and Mighty/Action Boyz) joins the show to talk about his favorite Freddy movie: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Dream Warriors was directed by Chuck Russel and stars Heather Langenkamp, Patricia Arquette, Craig Wasson, Laurence Fishburne aka Larry Fishborn, Ken Sagoes, Jennifer Rubin, and Robert Englund. Craig Wasson mans the mic like a jazz poet in this second installment of Ellroy’s L.A. WWII trilogy that began with PERFIDIA. The audiobook sizzles with the slang and accents of wartime Los Angeles in a story full of murder, missing gold, and fire set against a backdrop of war and racist paranoia. Wasson delivers Ellroy’s lyricism while also presenting the harsh language of humanity's underbelly. Published by Random House Audio. Read the full review of THIS STORM at audiofilemagazine.com. Barry Norman called Brian De Palma's BODY BOUBLE "damn near pornographic". One of us thinks it's tour-de-force cinema, while the other believes it to be tittilating cobblers. Which of us is right? Find out in our latest episode. Warning: This podcast contains middle aged men giggling at rudies. Music by The Sonic Jewels.
Chris and Eric are joined by OughtFiveFilm's Mike Wallace to round out Brian De Palma Month with a look at one of the director's more salacious films Body Double. The film stars Craig Wasson as a claustrophobia-stricken actor who thinks that he sees a murder while house-sitting for a rich Los Angeleno. It's De Palma's most obvious tribute to the progenitor of suspenseful thrillers Alfred Hitchcock while also featuring some truly unique visuals and even Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

VHS Rewind! Season 4 Episode 1 Ghost Story (1981) Some supernatural revenge should be visited upon the filmmakers for this travesty of a film. We at VHS Rewind feel that Peter Straub's novel, Ghost Story, upon which this film is (shall we say, loosely) based, is one of the great horror novels of all time. It has the scope and heft of one of those bricks produced by Stephen King (Salem's Lot; It; The Tommyknockers; etc.) but is much more literate and creepy and atmospheric. VHS Rewind is only too happy to dedicate our latest episode discussing why this film is a damn shame, a missed opportunity of epic proportions, from top to bottom. The raping of Straub's novel is just the first (albeit the most egregious) of the movie's sins. Then there is the unforgivable error of casting Craig Wasson: why did people cast this utterly talentless individual? This is the man who would go on to single handedly destroy Brian DePalma's BODY DOUBLE (1984). An actor with less charisma (and, apparently, a smaller dick) would be very hard to find. We are VHS Rewind were relieved to discover Craig Wasson seems to have stopped getting work after 2006. Is it us or does Craig Wasson look like a bastard cross between Bill Maher and Robert Englund (with none of the talent of even Mr. Englund)? And what of the famed Chowder Society? For an old-timer like myself, it is great to see this quartet of octogenarians (the great John Houseman; the great Fred Astaire; Douglas Fairbanks Jr (I guess he was great, but who was he?); and Melvyn Douglas (I guess he was great, but who was he?) but neither the director (John Irvin) nor the screenwriter (Lawrence D. Cohen) do these actors any favors. VHS Rewind is also only too happy to expound (and at length) upon the virtues of the film's one shining star: actress Alice Krige, who plays the sexy-as-all-get-out vengeful ghost. This is meant as a compliment but Ms. Krige's copious nudity is surpassed by her acting here: she does portray an especially menacing supernatural entity. We hope you will join VHS Rewind for this seance where we wish evil retribution upon the filmmakers responsible for 1981's GHOST STORY.
In this week's episode Simon and Keith talk about the British filmmaker John Irvin. There is very little they known about this director, yet he has been making films for 4 decades. Films that both hosts had seen at the video shop, like ROBIN HOOD (not the Kevin Costner one), NEXT OF KIN and SHINER, but didn't realise they were made by the same man. The films under discussion is GHOST STORY, RAW DEAL, HAMBURGER HILL and FREEFALL. Movie Heaven Movie Hell is a show where filmmakers Simon Aitken (BLOOD + ROSES, POST-ITS, MODERN LOVE) and Keith Eyles (FEAR VIEW, DRIVEN INSANE, CROSSED LINES) go through the A-Z of directors. Simon and Keith talk about their favourite and least favourite film from that director's body of work. This week, we go all Hitchcockian with Colin's pick of Brian De Palma's 1984 erotic thriller Body Double, in which a struggling actor (Craig Wasson) spies on a sexy neighbor (Deborah Shelton) and gets more than he bargained for when she is brutally murdered. Melanie Griffith also stars. Join us at the bar as we talk the influence of Alfred Hitchcock, twists and turns, plagarism vs homage, naked ladies, while bemoaning the fact that they don't make 'em like they used to on this week's episode!
