The gang's all here, and this week they cover IT: Welcome to Derry, Nobody Wants This Season 2, A return to A House of Dynamite, Regretting You, and The Perfect Neighbor. We open the show jumping right into the hottest new series, IT: Welcome to Derry. Kevin and Andrew have both watched the first episode, and Kevin's seen the second. Both guys have enjoyed the show so far, and Kevin keeps the second episode talk pretty spoiler-free. But the show itself is BRUTAL. It is like Stranger Things dialed up to (pun intended) Eleven. If horror is your thing, this is an absolute must-watch. Taking a break from the absolute massacre that is the opening of IT, Lauren talks about the latest season of Nobody Wants This on Netflix. It stars Adam Brody and Kristen Bell as an on-again, off-again couple dealing with the strains of a potential interfaith relationship. That makes it sound very dramatic, but it really is a lot of fun. The leads are great, but a lot of credit goes to the supporting cast, too. It's a well-rounded show that does risk getting tropey if they don't get creative with the 3rd season. That being said, this one (and the first one) is worth a watch. After some talk about things happy and fun, Andrew takes us back to last week's episode for a minute to talk about A House of Dynamite. His timeline was hit by several people who absolutely hated the ending, so the guys had to clear the air as to what this film was truly about. Remember, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey. And now that it's been a week, the guys can be a little more spoilery. So if you haven't watched it yet, and you should, maybe pause the show, watch it, then come back. Next up, Lauren talks about the new film, Regretting You. It stars Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Allison Williams, and Dave Franco. It's not an entirely unformulaic romance film, but it does have its share of little twists and turns that keep it interesting. It may not blow you away, but if it's your type of film, you're likely to really enjoy it. Kevin closes out the show, reluctantly, by quickly discussing the new Netflix documentary, The Perfect Neighbor. It's an interesting film, as all the footage is either from interrogation rooms or, more often, body cam footage. It's the tragic story of a racially charged shooting in Florida and how it ultimately ties into the Stand Your Ground laws. It's fascinating and heartbreaking, but an interesting story worth watching. Facebook: @apncpodcast Twitter: @APNCPodcast Instagram: AllPopNoCulture
Send us a Question!MOVIE DISCUSSION: Kathryn joins Melvin to discuss Scott Derrickson's latest horror feature, Black Phone 2! The two get into what sets it apart from other franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, how it holds up against the first film, and how it's... more Christian? Oh snap! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 23-minutes discussing Sigourney Weaver saying at NYCC 2025 that there's a "very strong first 50 pages" script of Alien that includes Ripley, and where she is at the time, and the two wonder both earnestly and cynically about the idea of a Ripley-included Alien sequel in the 2020s (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) First things first... is it A Nightmare on Elm Street meets Friday the 13th?Exploring the pervasive online joke that The Grabber, as a new "slasher icon", is an industry plant, and why it may feel that way.The dialogue here is bad. Full stop. The drama works if you buy into it, but the bad dialogue is a heavy cost.Kathryn and Melvin both had this fear: is Scott Derrickson just gonna do Sinister again? Thankfully, the answer is more nuanced than that. The spirituality isn't Deistic and the way Gwen prays and interacts with Jesus is as though Jesus is an active, non-corporeal character in the film.Talking Terrence, The Grabber, and Finn. There's no doubt in Melvin's mind that Scott Derrickson is evoking real-life Protestant Camp abuse tales with the drama and setting in Black Phone 2, including Kanakuk Kamp, LifeWay Camp, and Matt Chandler's church.Kathryn, "Knowing the truth, believing the truth, and speaking the truth can be really scary."Recommendations:In the Mouth of Madness (1995) (Movie)Caveat (2021) (Movie)Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! SCREEN THAT CALL FROM BEYOND…THE GRABBER IS BACK IN BLACK PHONE 2!Blumhouse pictures looks to break its poo-poo streak (Exorcist:Believer, The Wolf Man, M3G4N 2.0, The Woman in the Yard, Drop) with Black Phone 2, the sequel to the wildly successful first film. Based on a short story by Stephen King's son Joe Hill, the sequel is directed by genre friendly director-writer Scott Derrickson who also helmed the Sinister films and Doctor Strange. Starring returning actors Mason Thames (who is on a hot streak as the current IT actor), Madeleine McGraw, Miguel Mora, and Ethan Hawke, is this sequel a worthy expansion of the Grabber storyline/universe or is it just silly “bigger, bolder, better but more of the same”?

Synopsis Several years after the events of the original black phone movie, Finny and his sister Gwen are still haunted by the past. Finn is angry and aggressive with the people around him, and Gwen consistently receives terrifying visions when dreaming. As Gwen's nightmares lead her to a Christian youth camp her mother used to work at, Finn is forced to tag along while they look around for spooky clues like in scooby doo. Due to a snowstorm, Finn, Gwen, and Gwen's totally not boyfriend Ernesto find themselves trapped in the campgrounds, and things quickly turn sour as the paranormal activity ramps up. Is the grabber really gone? And why were they led to this campsite? For answers to these questions and more, go watch the film or continue this review. Review of Black Phone 2 I find Black Phone 2 to be a much more memorable film than Black Phone 1. The frozen mountain scene gives the film a feeling of isolation and hopelessness. Because the Grabber died in the first movie, Black Phone 2 is able to dive deeper into the supernatural side of the story, which I believe works a lot better for the franchise. The Grabber's already devilish look is taken to an even darker level, given that he is now basically a literal demon. Much of the tension in the movie comes from the dreams that Gwen has. The mood of the scene dramatically shifts every time she falls asleep. I think these scenes are well done, and while it might be blasphemous to say, it reminded me a lot of The Nightmare on Elm Street movies. However, the movie really suffers from some pretty surface-level dialogue that ends up being incredibly cringy at times. In my opinion, it is not necessary for the protagonist of the movie to say a vulgar, witty quip in every scene. An actual line in this movie is, “fuck you with a dinosaur dick”. Said in a pretty tense and serious scene, by the way. It doesn't feel true to life, and neither do many of the characters. Highlights of the cast were Demián Bichir as Armando, the owner of the camp, as well as Mason Thames as Finney Blake, who gives a powerfully emotional monologue towards the end. I had some fun watching this movie, but it isn't something I would rush to the theater to see.Score 6/10

On today's show Chris Ryan joins Sean to unpack the year 2025 in horror movies. But first, they hit a handful of movie news headlines, including rumors of a new trailer coming out in December for Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey,' Michael Mann's recent comments about the production of ‘Heat II,' and Eva Victor being cast in Tony Gilroy's ‘Behemoth!' (2:02). They then cover Scott Derrickson's sequel, ‘The Black Phone 2' (starring Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames), which they both found quite disappointing (10:32). Next, they reflect on the current state of horror as a genre and explore why they feel it's in a weird place right now (26:07). Later, Chris and Sean share their favorites of the year (36:16) before Alex Ross Perry joins the show to discuss his contribution to V/H/S/Halloween. Perry talks us through his thought process and points out why finding what he personally finds scary is the most important part (1:02:50). Finally, they have an extensive conversation surrounding horror anthologies, where they identify what defines a good horror anthology and share their personal favorites (1:22:58). This week's Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara and James Dyer pay tribute to two cinematic greats who left us this week: the legendary Oscar-winning actress, Diane Keaton, and Drew Struzan, the artist who defined posters, and people's walls, for decades. Struzan's work inspires this week's question, which asks our trio to identify the greatest poster of all time. Elsewhere in the show, they discuss the week's movie news, including the return of Sam Raimi, and review Roofman, After The Hunt, Black Phone 2, and briefly discuss Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and Edward Berger's Ballad Of A Small Player. Guest-wise, our cup overfloweth yet again, as Chris sits down on Zoom (sorry about his audio track, he didn't have access to his microphone) with Rebecca Miller, director of the excellent Apple documentary about Martin Scorese, Mr. Scorsese, [25:26 - 40:19 approx] and in person with the delightful stars of Roofman, Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst. [1:04:01 - 1:19:13 approx] And Sophie Butcher has a lovely chat with Black Phone 2 stars, Mason Thames (who, contrary to what Chris thinks, does not pronounce his name like the river) and Madeleine McGraw. [1:43:07 - 1:58:08 approx] Enjoy!

From director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Doctor Strange) and based on the chilling short story by Joe Hill, The Black Phone (2021) is a modern horror hit that blends supernatural terror with raw emotional storytelling. Set in 1978, the film follows Finney Blake (Mason Thames – For All Mankind, Walker), a shy 13-year-old boy kidnapped by the sadistic Grabber, played by Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Moon Knight). Locked in a soundproof basement, Finney discovers a disconnected black rotary phone that mysteriously allows him to communicate with the voices of the Grabber's previous victims. With the help of his tough and determined sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw – Toy Story 4, The Harbinger), Finney must gather the strength to fight back and escape. Known for its terrifying atmosphere, the Grabber's unforgettable mask designed by Tom Savini, and the heart-pounding showdown in the film's climax, The Black Phone quickly became one of Blumhouse's most acclaimed horror releases. Also featuring Jeremy Davies (Justified, Lost) as Terrence Blake and E. Roger Mitchell (The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as Detective Wright. In this reaction & review, Aaron Alexander, Andrew Gordon & John Humphrey dive into the Director's Cut of The Black Phone and also discuss the theatrical ending, comparing how the alternate edits change the tension and legacy of the story. It's a mixed bag of summer movies with a special guest stopping by on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day. We begin with a review of "Materialists," Celine Song's follow-up to her Oscar-nominated 2023 drama "Past Lives." Dakota Johnson plays a New York City matchmaker who must choose between Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. It's the eternal conundrum. In theaters. Then our good friend William Bibbiani drops in to help out with a review of "How to Train Your Dragon." If you've seen the beloved animated original, you've seen this live-action remake. Mason Thames, Nico Parker and Gerard Butler co-star. In theaters now. And we wrap up with a re-watch of "Rogue One," the 2016 "Star Wars" movie about the mission to steal the Death Star plans. Now that the phenomenal prequel series "Andor" has finished, we wanted to see how this film plays with fresh perspective. Have you seen "Rogue One" lately? Let us know your thoughts. No news this week, but we hope to catch up with you next Friday. Have a great weekend, and if you're going to a No Kings protest on Saturday, stay safe! A remake of the Academy Award-nominated animated feature of the same name from 2010, the live-action remake skews so closely to the original film that we're left wondering if there's any justification for its existence beyond the studio to make money.
