The Friday the 13th movie series is one of the top slasher movie franchises of the 1980s and beyond, so this week the Junkies take a look at Jason Voorhees, the unkillable movie monster with the staggeringly high body count who has been to camp, to hell, to outer space and has battled Freddy Krueger. The Junkies look at all 12 (not 13?) movies in the series so far, compare Jason to the other unstoppable slashers who made it big in the 1980s, Halloween's Michael Myers and Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy, and figure out which of the three they could fend off if they ever found themselves having to choose one. Then the Junkies look to the future with Jason, and the newly-formed Jason Universe that could bring us that elusive 13th movie in the series - and more. All good things must to come to an end...and apparently the mediocre ones too. They've been away from their children for far too long. Happy Halloween, Howlers! This week, Matt and Cody return to the pod to discuss the movie that brought them together in the first place. The boys talk homophobic slurs, midnight movies cures, and where and when they weres...when first experiencing this film in the wild. Not to mention: the legacy of Robert Englund, Ronny Who Could Do It Better, the importance of balance, and who they were really rooting for all along. Most importantly, they say goodbye to Night Howls and this incredible experience that brought so many of you into their lives. It's a finale for many but mainly for them and they can't thank you enough for joining on this ride. Socials: @nighthowlspod
We've come to the end of our month long journey through Crystal Lake and Elm Street, time to wrap things up with Freddy vs Jason directed by Ronny Yu. The boys discuss the rare slasher mash-up and how it pays respects to both franchises, while being fun as hell. After that, the boys rank both franchises separately and together, while also giving out some awards. Christian Ashley and Dr. Leah Robinson dive into the epic showdown of horror icons in this Halloween special, tackling the 2003 flick "Freddy vs. Jason." Right off the bat, they tackle the burning question: do we really lose if either Freddy or Jason comes out on top? As they kick back in their spooky drive-in seats, the duo reflects on the film's unique blend of slasher lore and the sheer absurdity of two legendary monsters squaring off. With witty banter and a sprinkle of nostalgia, they dissect the film's merits and flaws, exploring everything from character depth to iconic moments that make this crossover a cult classic in its own right. As the final episode of this year's Halloween Drive-In, the conversation flows with both humor and insight, leaving listeners pondering the true cost of horror fandom in a polarized world.Systematic Geekology dives into a spine-tingling showdown that has long been the subject of debate among horror aficionados: the epic clash between Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. The episode kicks off with a rather cheeky question posed by the host, Christian Ashley, about whether fans truly ‘lose' if either of these iconic horror figures emerges victorious in their infamous battle. Joined by first-time co-host Dr. Leah Robinson, the episode serves as a reflective and lively discussion on the cultural significance of these two titans of terror as they navigate through their respective legacies. The dynamic between the hosts is infectious, with Leah sharing her insights, adding depth to the conversation while also peppering it with her witty commentary. They reminisce about previous films in the franchises, sparking nostalgia and laughter as they highlight their favorite moments from the slasher genre, all while maintaining a relaxed and humorous tone that makes the listener feel right at home.As the discussion progresses, they delve deeper into the mechanics of the film ‘Freddy vs. Jason', exploring the plot intricacies and the absurdity that comes with crossover films. Leah humorously critiques the film's premise, revealing her kinder disposition towards it compared to her feelings about ‘Aliens vs. Predator'. The conversation flows effortlessly as they touch upon the philosophical and ethical questions raised by the film's narrative—most notably, the moral implications of sedating people to prevent Freddy from haunting their dreams. This segment showcases their critical thinking and ability to engage with deeper topics while still keeping the tone light and entertaining. Leah's candid reflections on the characters' motivations and the film's execution resonate as they both grapple with the horror genre's tropes and clichés, leading to a rich exploration of what makes a horror film compelling—or not.In wrapping up their analysis, Christian and Leah share their ratings of the film, revealing their differing perspectives while still finding common ground in their love for the genre. The episode concludes with some light-hearted banter about Halloween treats inspired by the film, showcasing their playful camaraderie. The hosts invite listeners to engage with the show by suggesting future topics, reinforcing the community aspect of Cismic Ecology, and leaving fans eager for what's to come. This episode is not just a review of a film but a celebration of horror cinema, encouraging listeners to reflect on their own experiences with the genre and to embrace the joys of geekdom together.Takeaways: Christian Ashley and Leah Robinson dive deep into the intricacies of horror icons Freddy and Jason, examining their motivations and the themes of fear and power in 'Freddy vs. Jason'. They joke about the absurdity of the film's premise, questioning the logic behind a battle between two supernatural beings and the concept of winning or losing in such a scenario. The hosts emphasize the importance of relatable characters in slasher films, lamenting the

In honor of Halloween in just a few days - and spurred by our recent NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 2 watch - this week on a halloween-themed bonus episode of THE BIG 4-0 we take a look at the technical final FRIDAY THE 13th film in the original series/timeline, 2002's JASON X, where they actually do the joke and send Jason into space; as well as the following year's FREDDY VS JASON, in which the titular horror icons finally face-off in the long-gestating/clamored-for-by-fans showdown. We also revisit our NIGHTMARE 2 discussion after watching the 2012 documentary SCREAM QUEEN from NIGHTMARE 2 star Mark Patton, and we touch on a bevy of other Halloween-adjacent films including: A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3, SCREAM, SCARY MOVIE, and PREDATOR and PREDATOR 2. PLACE YOUR BETS! While we wind down to the last holidays of the year, it's time to put the MCU on the backburner for a minute and dive into a couple horror flicks! A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th were two slasher genres past their prime in the nineties, but that didn't stop the ultimate crossover from trudging its way through development hell for nearly a decade before finally gracing the silver screen at a time the slasher genre only saw success in parodies and pastiches. So, does the cheese hold up, or does the datedness bring it down? Come join Brian, Alec, and special guests Darby (@gwenstacying) and Trey (@HeyGuysItSpidey) to find out as they celebrate Spooky Season with the ultimate horror crossover -- FREDDY VS. JASON!
It's the halfway point of ToT and this week we have a classic franchise duel, Freddy vs. Jason. This 2003 horror flick brings the Friday the 13th & Nightmare on Elm Street villains together in a crossover battle that's sure to make you feel.....something. Enjoy and as always be sure to drink/smoke and riff along responsibly!
Send us a textTwo horror titans enter, consistency takes a vacation, and we can't stop talking about why it still works. We rewind to 2003 and pull apart Freddy vs. Jason from its crisp, newcomer‑friendly recap to the outsized, fire‑lit brawls that the whole campaign was built around. We're honest about the warts: clunky teen dialogue, jump scares with no crescendo, and lore that forgets its own rules. We're also here for the highs: Robert Englund having a blast as a razor‑fingered showman, a hulking Jason cutting a path through a cornfield, and a handful of striking images that remind you how potent these icons can be when the camera actually looks. We map the story's logic (such as it is): Freddy stokes fear by resurrecting Jason, the town buries the past with a hush regime, and our kids try to outthink both monsters with Hypnosil and a road trip to Crystal Lake. Along the way we debate whether crowd kills help or hurt the mood, why mask fit and silhouette matter for menace, and how the movie tosses aside the classic “fight sleep” tension that made Nightmare sing. The dream‑realm pinball fight versus the dockside industrial smackdown gives us two flavors of violence, and that rebar shot, the lake reveal, and the final misdirect all stick the landing with a grin.Is it scary? Not really. Is it dumb fun? Absolutely—and sometimes that's enough. If you want meticulous rules and slow‑burn dread, go back to the early entries. If you want heavyweight horror branding colliding like action figures in a bonfire, this crossover still swings. Hit play to hear our favorite shots, least favorite logic gaps, and the moments that prove spectacle can carry a movie further than sense ever could.Enjoyed the breakdown? Hey Goons! This week on our Patreon Pics, Kevin helped us kick off August with his suggestion, the ever polarizing and fatally fantastic Freddy Vs Jason!!! Before we get into the film, we discuss a little bit of Houston Horror Film Fest, Greg Nicotero's involvement in an Angry Orchard Jason Voorhees spotting, and what Niecy Nash and Glenn Close are up to these days. Then we segue into Freddy Vs Jason— a film we all anticipated since Jason Goes to Hell. A lot of people had comments on this back in the day, but I do believe it's developed a cult following since then, and even if you didn't enjoy it, it still has its merits. Join us as we dive into Robert Englund's last appearance as Freddy in FILM, why Robert Yu has issues with Katharine Isabelle, and all the chisme and fun in between. This is an early 2000's time capsule, and we are happy to run down that twisted memory lane (while acknowledging its problems and celebrating its upsides).
