Welcome to our 33rd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West which is a novel by Gregory Maguire that inspired the successful musical and now movie adaptation. Wicked is a darker and more adult-themed revisionist exploration of the characters and setting of the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, its sequels, and the 1939 film adaptation. It is presented as a biography of the Wicked Witch of the West, here given the name "Elphaba". The book follows Elphaba from her birth through her social ostracism, school years, radicalization, and final days. Maguire shows the traditionally villainous character in a sympathetic light, using her journey to explore the problem of evil and the nature versus nurture debate, as well as themes of terrorism, propaganda, and existential purpose. Welcome to our 27th episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous which is the debut novel by Vietnamese-American poet Ocean Vuong. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late twenties, the letter unearths a family's history that began before he was born — a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam — and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation. At once a witness to the fraught yet undeniable love between a single mother and her son, it is also a brutally honest exploration of race, class, and masculinity. Asking questions central to our American moment, immersed as we are in addiction, violence, and trauma, but undergirded by compassion and tenderness, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is as much about the power of telling one's own story as it is about the obliterating silence of not being heard. With stunning urgency and grace, Ocean Vuong writes of people caught between disparate worlds, and asks how we heal and rescue one another without forsaking who we are. The question of how to survive, and how to make of it a kind of joy, powers the most important debut novel of many years. Join the conversation! Welcome to our 26th episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It is a first-person narrative novel by Sherman Alexie, from the perspective of a Native American teenager, Arnold Spirit Jr., also known as "Junior," a 14-year-old promising cartoonist. The book is about Junior's life on the Spokane Indian Reservation and his decision to go to a nearly all-white public high school away from the reservation. The graphic novel includes 65 comic illustrations that help further the plot. Although critically acclaimed, The Absolutely True Diary has also been the subject of controversy and has consistently appeared on the annual list of frequently challenged books since 2008, becoming the most frequently challenged book from 2010 to 2019. Controversy stems from how the novel describes alcohol, poverty, bullying, violence, sexuality and bulimia. As a result, a small collective of schools have challenged it, and some schools have blocked the book from distribution in school libraries or inclusion in the curricula. Join the conversation! Welcome to our 24th episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer which is the first book in his epic quartet called Buru Quartet, first published by Hasta Mitra in 1980. The story is set at the end of the Dutch colonial rule and was written while Pramoedya was imprisoned on the political island prison of Buru in eastern Indonesia. The story was first narrated verbally to Pramoedya's fellow prisoners in 1973 because he did not get permission to write. The story spread through all the inmates until 1975 when Pramoedya was finally granted permission to write the detailed story. The central character and the narrator of This Earth of Mankind is a Javanese boy, Minke, who is fortunate to attend an elite Dutch school because he is a descendant of Javanese royalty (the character is based on Tirto Adhi Soerjo). Minke faces a complex and dangerous world when he meets Nyai Ontosoroh, a njai or concubine of a Dutch man. Minke's life becomes more dangerous when he falls in love with Annelies, the beautiful Indo daughter of Nyai Ontosoroh. In This Earth of Mankind, Pramoedya portrayed the unjust life of the Indonesian people during the Dutch colonization period when social status was governed by the amount of European blood running through their veins. Pramoedya characterized Minke as an outspoken person, who refuses this hierarchical society by becoming a writer instead of a speech-maker, which bears a resemblance to Pramoedya's life who was jailed for two years after carrying anti-Dutch documents and then became a writer. A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
Welcome to our 23rd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into Fredrik Backman's Anxious People where looking at real estate isn't usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can't fix their own marriage. There's a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can't seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment's only bathroom, and you've got the worst group of hostages in the world. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next. Join the conversation! Share your thoughts, queries, and viewpoints in the comments or connect with Marisa (@serafinitv) and me on social media. Welcome to our 22nd episode in the monthly book discussion series hosted by Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and myself, Phil Svitek. If books are your passion, you've come to the right place! In this episode, we delve into John Grisham's Skipping Christmas, where it imagines a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That's just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they'll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty, they won't be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash, they aren't even going to have a tree. They won't need one, because come December 25 they're setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences—and isn't half as easy as they'd imagined. Join the conversation! I'm thrilled to share some exciting updates. First and foremost, I've just wrapped up the revisions on my forthcoming film, "The Arbiters." After a month of intense work on the script's outline, I now have a detailed 59-page blueprint to guide me through the next stage of scriptwriting. But there's more! I had the privilege of being a guest on a friend's podcast, where we had a thought-provoking discussion about creativity. You can check out the episode here: https://youtu.be/H9HuR4srxBw?si=i_WETGSja1vmZe8b. It was a fantastic opportunity to reflect on my creative process and share insights with a wider audience. This experience got me thinking about the importance of creativity, even during challenging times. Whether our art reflects the world's ups and downs, it plays a crucial role in processing our experiences and sharing hope. There's always a lot to explore and express through creativity. A significant part of my week was dedicated to Goop, which was celebrating its 15th anniversary. I had the honor of asking a question during Gwyneth Paltrow's big AMA episode. Being part of the Goop Podcast team is a privilege, and I'm grateful. I truly enjoy the people I get to work with on the show, which is exactly why I attended Cleo Wade's Remember Love Book Tour in Los Angeles. She's a co-host on the Goop Podcast and I wasn't required to go, but I wanted to support. It was a magical night filled with tears and laughter, strengthening the beautiful community Cleo has built. My website revamp is an ongoing project, focusing on making necessary adjustments to ensure it functions perfectly and looks its best, with high-quality photos and more. For my Patreon supporters, we had a fantastic coaching session this weekend. If you haven't joined yet, you're welcome to become a Patreon member at patreon.com/PhilSvitek for exclusive content and direct interaction with me. Speaking of coaching, I recently had the opportunity to help someone improve their podcast's audio quality. It was a delicate situation, as the recording team were professionals and my advice was unsolicited. Still, I crafted a helpful and disarming message, and the feedback was positive. Sometimes, a small suggestion can make a big difference if handled right. I also touched upon The Rock's recent apology for the Maui incident and discussed the importance of amplifying existing organizations rather than starting new ones. The financial impact of being financially strapped was another topic I delved into, emphasizing how every little bit helps, especially for those with less. I shared a fascinating statistic about indigenous people and their role in protecting biodiversity. Plus, an update on Diamond, my foster dog, and my thoughts on organizing an adoption fair for her. BTW, here's info on her if you'd like to see her and share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMZS0hYAb7Y. Then, I shared my concerns about a dear friend experiencing headaches and explored the connection between mental and physical health. Could therapy hold the key to resolving these issues? And finally, the idea of intermissions in long movies got me thinking. Imagine having a break to refresh, use the restroom, and grab some snacks during epic films. A win-win, right? Welcome back to the next step of my website design process! In the previous episode (if you missed it, catch up here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ8zDLRFbI6j-dwljQN0lcgE), we discussed the initial stage of website development. Now, in this episode, we're diving into step two. In this phase, I'll guide you through the process of translating your ideas and text from your outline into an actual website. We're not focusing on visual flair just yet; instead, we'll familiarize ourselves with the website backend. Even if you're using templates, you might encounter issues like color discrepancies or spacing challenges. That's perfectly fine – the goal is to see how your content fits within the site structure. As you work through this step, don't forget to leave bold, ALL CAPS (and even italicized and underlined) notes to yourself or your developer within the web pages. These notes will help you identify what needs adjustment as you progress. Whether you're using Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress (like I do), this process is applicable. By the way, I host my site with WP Engine, a WordPress-focused hosting service. While this is not a paid endorsement, I appreciate their expertise in WordPress hosting. By default, WP Engine uses the popular theme called Genesis Blocks. You can find more information about it in these links: - Video 1: https://youtu.be/0O7Gx84kyXk?si=4NS21f1T9RqGf2nk - Video 2: https://youtu.be/4kEBbur8ct0?si=jnK5jsxwF6nmU_pz Stay tuned for future episodes where we'll clean up our site and work on the visual flair. In today's tech-driven world, it seems like everyone has something to say about NFTs but how many have actually dived in and experienced them firsthand? Let's face it: most people are just headline readers, and that's a problem. In this episode, I'm going to talk about why being a practitioner matters. I'll also discuss the current dip in NFTs, and while you might think I have a predictable answer, there's more to it than you might expect. I firmly believe that NFTs are here to stay, and not just for digital collectibles. Imagine a world where everyday contracts, from buying homes to insurance, are secured through NFTs. It's a game-changer. So, yes, that's why I'm not worried that 95% of the current NFT projects out there are worthless. Marisa Serafini (@serafinitv) and I are book lovers and we've decided to do a monthly in-depth book discussion. Our 19th book is Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel, written by AW Jantha, and next month we'll be chatting about Lois Duncan's Stranger With My Face. What's Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel about? "Fans will be spellbound by a fresh retelling of the original film, followed by the all-new sequel that continues the story with the next generation of Salem teens. Shortly after moving from California to Salem, Massachusetts, Max Dennison finds himself in hot water when he accidentally releases a coven of witches, the Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. Max, his sister, and his new friends (human and otherwise) must find a way to stop the witches from carrying out their evil plan and remaining on earth to torment Salem for all eternity. Twenty-five years later, Max and Allison's seventeen-year-old daughter, Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory. When Halloween celebrations don't quite go as planned, it's a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches' latest vile scheme." Thanks for tuning in. As mentioned in the episode, check out our movie discussion of Hocus Pocus from years ago along with Sara Stretton— https://youtu.be/yGuHGCxAOdQ?si=yPOrFuW_DwuadsHs. Hello, fellow content creators!
A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
I wanted to shed light on an issue that plagues many aspiring YouTubers: the temptation to buy YouTube views. It might seem like a quick fix to boost your channel's visibility, but I'm here to tell you why it's a terrible idea and why you should steer clear of this unethical practice. 1) Violation of YouTube's Terms of Service: Purchasing views is a direct violation of YouTube's rules. The consequences could range from losing views to channel termination. 2) Low-Quality Engagement: Bought views often come from bots, offering no real interaction with your content. 3) Risk of Penalization: YouTube can reduce your visibility in search results and recommendations if they detect artificial views. 4) Damaged Credibility: Purchasing views can tarnish your reputation, making it hard to regain trust. 5) Ineffective for Long-Term Growth: Organic engagement is what YouTube values most; purchased views won't lead to sustained success. 6) Legal Consequences: Depending on your location, buying views may even break the law. 7) Financial Loss: Scams are common in the view-buying industry, potentially wasting your hard-earned money. 8) Devaluing Real Achievements: Buying views diminishes the significance of genuine milestones on your channel. 9) Negative Audience Perception: Viewers and potential collaborators may avoid your channel if they suspect unethical tactics. 10) Unpredictable Consequences: YouTube's policies are always evolving; you might face severe consequences down the road. Instead of taking shortcuts, focus on creating high-quality, engaging content that resonates with your audience. Authenticity and patience are the keys to long-term success on YouTube. Remember, the journey may be longer, but it's the most sustainable way to achieve your goals. In this vlog, I'm excited to provide you with an in-depth update on my latest film project. It's been quite a journey re-outlining the story, and I'll share both the challenges and successes I've encountered along the way. While revising has its perks, tackling those pesky plot holes has proven to be a formidable task. I had high hopes of completing the entire outline by the end of the week, but reality had other plans, and I only made it halfway. Nevertheless, I'm proud of the progress I've made and am determined to wrap it up in the coming week. But that's not all! Stick around as I dive into the magic of sharing art with others. I recently introduced a friend to the enchanting worlds of "Princess Mononoke" and "Your Name." It reminded me of the power of experiencing art through fresh eyes. Their reactions transported me back, making me feel like I was discovering these masterpieces for the first time. I'll also share some intriguing musings that have been on my mind lately. From the importance of knowing more plants and animals than celebrities and brands to the eerie real-life relevance of "The Dark Knight" quote, "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." And if that's not enough, stay tuned for a special mention of my friend's innovative Bravago hard seltzer drink line (@drinkbravago). It's a fascinating venture that deserves recognition! Lastly, I'll reveal the one word that I believe will define my 2024. Join me on this insightful journey of creativity, exploration, and inspiration. Whether you're an indie artists or an entrepreneur who just launched a start up, you have essentially two options: you can either learn something and do it yourself or you can pay someone to do it for you. There of course exists a spectrum within the two and there are trade offs along that entire spectrum (as there are with all things in life). However, you'd be surprised how many people don't want to spend the time learning something AND don't want to pay anyone else to do it. In fact, they expect that because of their talents, or their idea/product, people with line up to support them with labor and finances. That's not how it works. Certainly not initially. People generally come once they know it's proven and they can get a return. Fighting against this notion slows down artists' progress and makes them very unhappy. Don't be that way. Accept the reality and move accordingly. So check out this episode and please share your thoughts down in the comment section or hit me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Ken Napzok (@KenNapzok) has a wonderful notion that we shouldn't fear change, but rather we should find our place within change. Ever since I first heart this, I loved it because of how much sense it made and how applicable it is—or at least if you want to stop being anxious and/or grumpy. Embracing this principle gives you agency over your own life and allows you to be joyous no matter what.
