The term is a commonly used English translation of the Thai term 'kathoey', which is used to inoffensively refer to those 'third gender' (queer and/or genderqueer, to our Western understanding) individuals who are widely accepted in Thai society due to their prominent historical (and present!) significance in Thai culture and entertainment. Though not intended to be transphobic or insulting, we recognise that as with most single-word translations, 'ladyboy' fails to encapsulate the complexity of the original term 'kathoey'.
Claire Kohda is a writer and musician. She reviews books for publications including the Guardian and the TLS, specialising in books from and about East Asia. Her essay, Portraits, about her experiences growing up mixed-race, also features in East Side Voices: Essays celebrating East and Southeast Asian identity in Britain, edited by Helena Lee and published by Sceptre. Jim Akin talks about making the film THE OCEAN OF HELENA LEE, a semi-autobiographical account of a difficult period in his childhood. Akin tells his story through Helena Lee, a thoughtful and reflective 12-year old who tries to come to terms with her home life and bohemian surf-rat father. As a child, Akin learned to be self-reliant. Don't depend on anyone; you will only set yourself for disappointment. "I don't look for anyone to help," he says, It's just not productive." He took that perspective into his role as a filmmaker and did everything himself, from shooting the film to the final edit. I was a "one-man band," he tells me.
