In which the Mister and Kid 1 join me in reviewing TWILIGHT (2008), from a screenplay by Melissa Rosenberg, from Stephanie Meyer's YA series the film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The concept of a May-December romance is pushed far beyond the breaking point as young Bella (Kristen Stewart) is inexplicably drawn to Edward (Robert Pattinson), a brooding vampire 200 years her senior in this film adaptation of the popular book series. The film clocks in at 2 h and 2 m, is rated PG-13 and is currently streaming on Peacock but also to buy/rent on Prime Video. The film is a contender for best cinematography at this upcoming 2025 Oscars race. For Valentine's Day, we're celebrating the greatest American love story of all time: Isabella Swan and Edward “The Bad Guy” Cullen. That's right, after years of threatening to turn the podcast into a full-time Twilight show, we're finally doing it. For one episode, at least. But how to tackle such an enormous endeavor? Well, we've found the two perfect people to help us in our quest: Courtney and Rose from the great Fiction Fixation podcast. The four of us unpack our different Twilight journeys, discuss the odd figure that is Stephenie Meyer, try to determine the connection between Twilight and Mormonism, unpack the demented sexual politics of this franchise, and, finally, we all confess how much we'd want Edward to bite our necks. “YOU BETTER HOLD ON TIGHT SPIDER MONKEY.“On this Valentine's Day, we decided to cover a romance movie that captured the attention of an entire generation of girls, contributed to the YA adaptation craze, and gave us vampire baseball. Today, we are talking about 2008's Twilight, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. When the film franchise was making its rounds at the box office, we remember that this was a thing that was very popular for adolescent boys to hate on. Austin hasn't even seen the film, despite being a fan of vampire films as we talked about on the Horror Movie Genre Tier List episode on our Patreon. We talk about how our tastes have evolved and why we might be more open to this film, despite not being in its target audience. Will we still find something to enjoy about it, or will we struggle to say nice things? Just in case, we will have a Twilight fan, Elle Parker as a guest to let us know what makes the film so special to her.We talk about the films commitment to the moody, blue aesthetic. How Hardwicke opted to shoot on location in the Pacific Northwest to capture the rain and the greenery. We talk about how significant her absence was in the following films, and give her praise for her craftsmanship and dedication to translating the essence of Stephanie Meyer's novel into a film. We also talk about the reasons she may not have been invited back to direct the sequels. We talk about the way the camera moves, the on point musical cues and soundtrack, the attention to mise en scene, the comedy, the practical effects and the relentless commitment to telling the story of a boy and girl who feel so tortured despite having pretty great lives. Seriously, even the step dad has a good relationship with Bella. Regardless of how you feel about Twilight, there is a reason why it had such an irrevocable hold on its fans. After watching the film and talking about it, it was very easy and fun to find out why!We hope you enjoy this episode!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o

Get ready to have the curtains pulled back on Catherine Hardwick's "Thirteen," a movie that holds a mirror up to adolescence with unsettling clarity. Guest co-host, MaxFun Producer Palmira Muñiz and I reflect on the emotional odyssey within this film's raw portrayal of youth, exploring the controversial layers of manipulation, survival, and the rocky landscape of female friendships. We also don't shy away from examining the ethical conundrums faced when young actors bring such vivid, and often painful, stories to life. It's a discussion that not only dissects the story on screen but also the broader implications it has within society and the film industry itself. But this episode isn't all heavy-hearted introspection; join us as we stroll down memory lane, reminiscing about SoCal school life and the cultural touchstones of the early 2000s. Palmira and I break down the trends that defined an era, from the infamous Skechers craze to the quirks of teenage rebellion. Tying it all together, we introduce fresh segments and insights that promise to keep you hooked and perhaps, see a bit of your own story reflected back at you. Stay tuned, follow the journey, and let's keep the conversation as authentic as the films we love. Director Sean Durkin discusses his new film, The Iron Claw, with fellow Director Catherine Hardwicke in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses how he aimed to make a complex narrative exploring the absence of grief, filming with live wrestling fans during the ring scenes, and utilizing one-takes to keep the performances authentic. The film tells the true story of the Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Through tragedy and triumph, and under the shadow of their domineering father and coach, the brothers seek larger-than-life immortality on the biggest stage in sports.
