Coffee and beer are, when you think about it, strange bedfellows. One gets you out of bed in the morning, provides stimulation and impetus, while the other (hopefully) tells you that it's time to slow down and kick back. Perhaps it's the inherent balance this creates which is why I can't do without either.I first got into coffee about 10 years ago, and for all wants and purposes in this podcast we'll call it ‘third wave coffee' (it's a bit like craft beer, in that it is a term that was invented to definite a subculture within an industry, but it just ended up getting abused and misused.) For me, the appeal of third wave coffee was exactly the same as the one I found in craft beer: big, bold, unusual flavours from small producers. Once I'd discovered it, I was the owner of an Aeropress, hand grinder and scales faster than you can say “Yirgacheffe.” But like beer, my coffee journey has been one of peaks and troughs. In the early days I lusted after the rarest, most interesting coffees I could find, even once spending $15 on a single cup of pour over Colombian Gesha at a fancy American coffee spot. That was the peak. Then, just like with beer and my lust for cask bitter and precise lager, my coffee enthusiasm settled out. An automatic filter coffee machine replaced my manual equipment. A good pour of espresso, like a great pint of cask, was best left to the experts. I was happier now. My interest in coffee, however, lingers on. So when I was invited for a tour of Marsden's Dark Woods Coffee (hands down one of the best roasters in the UK, in my opinion) I couldn't refuse. What I love about Dark Woods is both how approachable their coffees are, and their seemingly unwavering commitment to quality beans. This was evident in every part of the process I saw during my visit, from the roastery itself, down to the perfect espresso I tried immediately afterwards. It was also great to see that they're not limiting how they express their coffees, as I also got to try hopped, and fruited coffees, plus even bourbon barrel-aged coffee.Perhaps there are more similarities between modern beer and coffee than I care to admit. This is why I was thrilled to get a chance to sit down and chat with two of Dark Woods' founding partners, Paul Meikle-Janney and Damian Blackburn. I was curious to see where their perception of coffee culture is, and how what their industry is experiencing relates to what's currently happening in beer. It's a compelling listen, and I'd like to thank Paul and Damian for taking the time to chat. If you enjoyed this, then why not check out our recent article by Tom Wilkinson (also of Dark Woods) who recently wrote for Pellicle about the place of third wave coffee in a post-craft world. You can read it here. We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. Chris & Filly are joined with one of our fabulous incredible clients from our Ending Body Burnout Method program. When Melissa first started working with us, it was clear to see that she had created a successful business and was killing it in her profession, but the toll of many years of hustling and grinding building and running her business - as well as juggling a blended family and dealing with trauma - had taken a massive toll on her body. Mel was struggling with severe bloating, pain and constipation, she'd stacked on weight, was exhausted and feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Mel went ALL-IN on her healing journey, following every body systems protocol set up for her, based on her labs - and, even more importantly, learning to reconnect with herself, clear past trauma, let go of self-limiting beliefs and create more spaciousness in her life to deeply love and care for her self. These real-life stories are super special - I call them “evidence collecting”. Evidence that healing IS possible. The more you can hear and see this, the more it becomes possible for you! So we are so incredibly grateful to the wonderful Mel, for coming on the show today, to spread hope and healing with others. About Melissa Marsden: Melissa Marsden is a workplace strategist, business coach, author, and podcast host dedicated to creating supportive and dynamic work environments. With over 12 years leading COMUNiTI, Mel guides corporate and government teams in designing workplaces that align with their values and enhance human potential. She's the author of The Next Workplace and hosts Work Life by Design, one of Australia's top workplace podcasts. Mel's approach blends strategy with heart, innovation with intuition, and ambition with alignment. She also coaches women entrepreneurs to build businesses that reflect their values and lifestyle, avoiding burnout. As a multi-award-winning entrepreneur and Telstra Business Women's Awards finalist, Mel's passion for business and innovation is matched by her commitment to empowering others. In this episode, Mel chats to Chris & Filly about: How Mel supports businesses and corporate teams to create an environment that is in alignment with the team's vision, and to support wellbeing and productivity Why Mel reached out to us - chronic constipation that had flared up with severe bloating post-breastfeeding, weight gain, overwhelm and emotional dysregulation The frustration of getting nowhere with doctors, colonoscopies, scans and low-fodmap dieting The validation that came from discovering body system imbalances (adrenal fatigue, SIBO, detox and gallbladder issues) on functional labs, and how it gave her permission to slow down and rest Getting to the deeper root-cause of “busy” burnout patterns and saying yes to everyone to try and get external significance What it looked like to rewire, reprogram and let go of dysfunctional self-beliefs, stories, trauma and repressed emotion - getting out of “Mentally” trying to “let things go”, and fully embodying the process How Mel now has more flow, presence, slowness, and how her health, life and business has changed because of the deep healing Mel's new coaching and retreat focus, and how she's helping other women in business get out of burnout and connect with themselves Show Note Links: Find more about Melissa and her business here Join the WAITLIST for our Ending Body Burnout Method to access over $500 worth of early-bird bonuses and secure your spot (limited spaces available as our program includes 1:1 consults/coaching) While you're waiting for doors to open to the Method, get started with a Connect The Dots Initial Consult Take our Ending Body Burnout Assessment HERE Disclaimer: This Ending Body Burnout Show podcast and any information, advice, opinions or statements within it do not constitute medical, health care or other professional advice, and are provided for general information purposes only. At the end of each week, Mike Hosking takes you through the big-ticket items and lets you know what he makes of it all. Andrew Bayly: 3/10 It's a sad business. Was it a sackable offence? No. Does it put people off entering politics? I would have thought so. But when you call someone a loser and grab an arm, can you survive? It was the re-offence that was sackable. Law and order: 8/10 The violent crime stats and new detainment powers are tangible evidence of progress in the right direction. Marsden and the rebuild: 2/10 That's what is wrong with coalitions. They indulge folly. Temu: 3/10 We are spending more there and less domestically. Never underestimate the power of cheap crap. Tory Whanau: 1/10 Cancelling her Newstalk ZB slot is the beginning of the end. Cancelling Newstalk ZB slots doesn't tend to go well for voting patterns – I speak from experience. The Warriors: 7/10 Unbeaten in the offseason and some fairly ordinary, blow-up bat-wielding Raiders to tackle first up. Now I'm a bit of a policy wonk. I don't care which party it is. If they come up with a policy, I like to break it down and see if it makes sense. Now I know politicians are addicted to announcements, attention and media coverage. Which means they sometimes say the first thing in their heads that sound like they'll get votes. No matter if it's deliverable or not. Labour had a bad case of it. Phil Twyford and his 100 thousand Kiwibuild fantasy. Michael Wood was the champion. Based on five minutes on the back of an envelope he announced a nearly $900 million bike bridge. Faced with backlash from Dominion Road businesses he stuck the light rail project underground. Tripling the price to an unaffordable $18 billion dollars. Now it seems like the National led coalition has a case of the same disease. Paul Goldsmith has it bad. This week he announced a change to citizen's arrest rules but had no idea of what the changes are going to be. Classic announcement of an announcement. But the king of wishful thinking is the prince of the provinces, Shane Jones. First, he proposed a special economic zone for Marsden point begging the question why not turn the whole country into a special economic zone. The whole place needs a hand. Then he proposed repairing Marsden point refinery. A fanciful idea that was shot down in hours as the enormous cost of nearly $8 billion dollars came to light. The reason why no Government has repaired the refinery ever since it was sold 40 years ago. The thing about leadership is that you need to make adult decisions and proposals. If you're a cabinet minister you can't just let the first Walter Mitty like thought bubble pop out of your mouth, when you know there's nothing there. That's the lesson Labour learnt last term. Hopefully the Government figures that out soon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this episode of “Sara Gonzales Unfiltered,” Donald Trump called out MSNBC's low ratings over the weekend at CPAC. Joy Reid has since been fired from her show, "The ReidOut." Additionally, NBC stalwart Lester Holt is exiting "NBC Nightly News." Are we witnessing a transition of the mainstream media, or are the networks trying to salvage their bottom line? If the deep-staters were nervous about Kash Patel's confirmation as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, they're now panicking over vocal FBI critic Dan Bongino being appointed deputy director of the FBI. Elon Musk sent out an email over the weekend requiring federal employees to list their job accomplishments from last week, and it has Democrats losing their minds. The episode concludes as Sara and the panel enjoy Tom Homan's speech at CPAC. Homan does not care about your feelings. And finally, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is closing down immigration activity at the Roosevelt Hotel and 53 additional shelters. Finally! It has only taken two long years!! There's nothing better than community to help with that. In the Delay, Don't Deny community we all embrace the clean fast, and there's just the right support for you as you live your intermittent fasting lifestyle. You can connect directly with Gin in the Ask Gin group, and she will answer all of your questions personally. If you're new to intermittent fasting or recommitting to the IF lifestyle, join the 28-Day FAST Start group. After your fast start, join us for support in The 1st Year group. Need tips for long term maintenance? We have a place for that! There are many more useful spaces beyond these, and you can interact in as many as you like. Visit ginstephens.com/community to join us. An annual membership costs just over a dollar a week when you do the math. If you aren't ready to fully commit for a year, join for a month and you can cancel at any time. If you know you'll want to stay forever, we also have a lifetime membership option available. IF is free. You don't need to join our community to fast. But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Lucy is a repeat guest, and she first appeared on episode 134. She began living the intermittent fasting lifestyle in 2017, after learning about Dr. Michael Moseley's 5:2 approach. She went to Facebook to find a group about intermittent fasting, and ended up in Gin's original Facebook group where she soon became an active member and later a moderator. Lucy's preference for a balanced, nutritious diet aligned with her job as a cookery teacher, making it more practical for her to eat less frequently throughout the day. Over time, she adapted to a relaxed one meal a day approach, which is the lifestyle she lives today. Gin and Lucy talk about how they both define “one meal a day” as a multi-course meal that spans several hours, rather than one plate of food in a short period of time. Lucy discusses the significant dietary changes she made based on her Zoe test results, eliminating foods like white rice, pasta, and bread that didn't work well for her body. She found delicious swaps such as barley and pulses such as lentils and beans, which she incorporates into weekly meal preparations. Lucy's meal prep routine involves making weekly pulse mixtures and mega salads composed of various sprouts, herbs, and whatever ingredients she has on hand, optimizing her efficiency in the kitchen. She emphasizes the practical approach of batching and freezing meal components for quick and healthy eating options throughout the week. Her dietary adjustments have not only boosted her nutrition but have also introduced her into the world of easy ferments, leading her to work on a new book that simplifies the fermenting process with recipes like pineapple kraut.Lucy and Gin reflect on their mutual experiences going through the Zoe program, which encourages you to work with your unique body to find the foods that work best for you. Despite initial disappointing results, Lucy has seen significant improvements in her health and microbiome scores by focusing on probiotic foods and transitioning to healthier fats like olive oil. A particular highlight is Lucy's fondness for creating versatile, flavorful meals without strict measurements, featuring fresh, nutritious ingredients. Her latest cookbook, I'll Have What Lucy's Having, is designed to be user-friendly, providing tips on batch cooking, freezing, and growing sprouts, targeting everyday convenience rather than complex, time-consuming recipes. Throughout the episode, both Gin and Lucy underscore the transformative benefits of intermittent fasting, particularly for gut health and overall well-being. Lucy's personal anecdotes reveal how fasting has become a sustainable lifestyle that doesn't feel at all like a restrictive diet, allowing her to enjoy foods like cheese and avocados freely. She advises newcomers to gradually delay meals and reduce eating frequencies, insisting the practice will become easier with time and adaptation. Lucy's final advice is clear: the journey to adopting intermittent fasting should be simplified, emphasizing real, high-quality foods eaten within restricted time windows to enhance health without overcomplicating the process. There's strong opposition from the science community to the new Government approach to research funding. Minister Judith Collins says it's to prioritise research of economic, environmental, or a health benefit to New Zealand. MacDiarmid Institute co-director Nicola Gaston says it entirely defeats the Marsden Fund's purpose. On a beautiful day in sunny Sydney, Australia, Renae Marsden made her way to Jacob's Ladder - a lookout in Watsons Bay's oceanside suburb.  It was the 5th of August, 2013, and Renae was just a couple months shy of her 21st birthday. Climbing up a cliff known as “The Gap”, Renae stared into the crashing waves below.  It had been a devastating day, after her boyfriend, Brayden Spiteri, sent her a text that read, “I think I need a break, and so do you.”  Renae then sent a few texts back, including one to her mother, telling her she loved her and was sorry.  She then threw her phone into the ocean. Minutes later, Renae followed her phone over the cliff's edge. Today on "Sara Gonzales Unfiltered" is a no-holds-barred analysis of today's biggest stories. We take a deep dive into the controversial demands of pro-Hamas protesters at the University of Chicago and their request for HIV tests, dental dams, and Plan B; the exam cancellation demands of traumatized Columbia law students after police confronted anti-Israel protests; and the patriotic Ole Miss counter-protesters singing the national anthem. Gonzales dissects the expected DOJ indictment of Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar over his ties to corrupt Azerbaijani businessmen, speculating on his lavish lifestyle despite a modest congressional salary. The conversation exposes the D.C. "gravy train" of corruption plaguing career politicians. Sara Gonzales and guest Matthew Marsden analyze the potential VP picks for Donald Trump's 2024 run, including Governor Doug Burgum and Senators Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance, and Tim Scott. Marsden provocatively suggests Tulsi Gabbard could be a strategic "star power" vice presidential choice to attract independents and moderates, despite her Democratic affiliation. Look ahead to the 2024 election as they analyze whether Biden could gain from a Trump indictment based on new polls. Uplifting clips show Trump being cheered as a savior by first responders in New York. Gonzales also dives into the Dan Schneider lawsuit against the "Quiet on Set" documentary over insinuations he sexually abused child actors, despite his bizarre public apology. Was the Nickelodeon showrunner complicit in disturbing sexualized scenes? Sara is joined by her husband for the very first time and BlazeTV contributor Matthew Marsden.
