Controlled Opposition - TEASER

What's the Republican spending bill all about? It's an extremely dangerous powergab engineered by Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House and dirty lawyer who came up with the legal strategy to try to overturn the 2020 election. The Republican spending bill essentially grants legal protections to Trump and Musk's ongoing illegal mass purge, to protect them against court orders–one of the last levers of power we have left. Any Democrat who votes for this is complicit in Trump and Musk's tech-backed coup, illegally mass firing federal workers to replace them with an A.I. surveillance state. This week's episode continues our conversation with Gil Durán of the Third Reich and FrameLab newsletters on Controlled Opposition—those Vichy Democrats who refuse to stand up to the fascist Republicans in power. But why? What's in it for them? In a dictatorship, no one is safe—not even former allies like Putin, who've found themselves mysteriously falling out of windows or exploding mid-air. Why are some Democrats still playing the role of complicit bystanders? The Senate is gearing up to vote on the extreme Republican spending bill, which slashes life-saving programs like Head Start and community health centers, while funneling billions to the Pentagon and Homeland Security. At a time when Trump is threatening to invade Canada and Greenland, and ICE is denying due process to green card holders like Mahmoud Khalil, the stakes couldn't be higher. The bill also cuts Washington, DC's budget—an attempt to punish the city for daring to protest Trump's corrupt regime. But here's the thing: shutting down the government doesn't empower Trump or Musk—it forces Democrats to get on the front lines and expose the Republican spending bill for what it really is: a power grab designed to protect Trump and Musk's illegal tech-backed coup. There's hope, though. While Trump and Musk face a future of justice (their approval ratings are plummeting), we need to keep fighting back.  Want to enjoy Gaslit Nation ad-free? To conclude our trilogy of interviews with prominent tech journalists to celebrate the upcoming twentieth anniversary of the DLD Conference, today's interview is with David Kirkpatrick, author of The Facebook Effect and founder of Techonomy Media. In contrast with Steven Levy and John Markoff, whose attitude toward Silicon Valley doesn't seem have dramatically changed, Kirkpatrick's thinking has undergone quite a radical shift over the last twenty years. As he acknowledges, he's been transformed from a Facebook believer into one of its most acute critics. And, in contrast with Levy and Markoff, Kirkpatrick's intellectual attention has also broadened, shifting from the internet to focusing on technological fixes for global warming.David Kirkpatrick is a longtime technology and business journalist, author and media entrepreneur, known for his work connecting technology developments to societal impact and progress. He is an expert on internet companies and social media, and is now focusing especially on climate tech and the climate economy. He is also known for moderating on-stage conversations with tech leaders. Kirkpatrick's bestselling 2010 book, The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World, was published in 32 languages, including Catalan and Vietnamese. It was a finalist for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year as well as the Gerald Loeb Award. In subsequent years, he has written extensively about the growing societal harms caused by Facebook/Meta and social media broadly. His articles include 2018's Facing Facebook's Failure for Techonomy, and earlier that same year, The Facebook Defect, in Time Magazine. In December 2023 he published Vinod Khosla Can See the Future: It Just Got Hazy for a Minute in The Information. Kirkpatrick founded and for 12 years led Techonomy Media, which hosted conferences on technology, innovation, business, and their connection to social progress. Techonomy's mission was to highlight ways technology could improve society and human lives. Among his numerous onstage interviews there were Mark Zuckerberg, Marc Benioff, John Chambers, Commerce Sec. Penny Pritzker, economist Jeffrey Sachs, Patrick Collison, DARPA Chief Arati Prabhakar, Sen. Cory Booker, Nandan Nilekani, and Sean Parker. He also has served as a moderator at Burda Media's DLD conference for 19 years, interviewing a wide range of leaders including Mark Zuckerberg. Kirkpatrick worked for Time Inc. for 30 years, mostly at Fortune Magazine, where he was for many years senior editor for internet and technology. Many years earlier, while serving as a copy clerk at Life Magazine, he served as unit chairperson of The Newspaper Guild at Time Inc. He founded and hosted Fortune's Brainstorm conference series beginning in 2001 and for six years wrote its Fast Forward column. At Brainstorm he hosted and interviewed Pres. Bill Clinton, Israeli Pres. Shimon Peres, Senator John McCain, and numerous technology and business CEOs. He was a formal participant and moderator at the World Economic Forum in Davos for 21 years, and for 13 years was a member of the Forum's International Media Council, consisting of 100 top global media leaders. He also served for many years as a contributing editor at Bloomberg Television. He is a recipient of the 2012 Silicon Valley Visionary Award, awarded alongside Elon Musk, Jim Breyer, and Sal Khan. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. The stage is set at Formula 1's highest track: Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. It sits over 2200m above sea level and is challenging for teams and drivers due to the thinner air which saps engine power and can cause altitude sickness for drivers.   All eyes will be on Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull as they battle at the apex of the grid. With five races remaining, Ferrari are only 48 points behind first-placed McLaren in the constructors' standings.    Bet Central's Sean Parker is joined by Mary-Anne Wakefield to preview the Mexico GP.

All eyes will be on Lando Norris who is chasing Max Verstappen to claim his maiden title, but the Red Bull driver remains the favourite to land a fourth world championship and holds a 52-point lead.   Sean Parker and Mary-Anne Wakefield preview the US GP and give their predictions.

The Social Network is a 2010 American biographical drama film about the founding of Facebook. The movie takes creative liberties with the true story, but raises interesting questions about the importance of accuracy in storytelling. The main character, Mark Zuckerberg, is portrayed as a smart but arrogant individual who becomes obsessed with proving himself. The development of his character throughout the story is well done, showing his flaws and transformation. The side characters, including Sean Parker, Eduardo Severin, and the Winklevoss twins, are also well developed. The Winklevoss twins serve as antagonists, but Mark Zuckerberg's biggest enemy is himself. The conversation explores themes of arrogance, selfishness, friendship, loyalty, and the cost of success. Mark Zuckerberg's character is portrayed as arrogant and self-centered throughout the movie, with his actions driven by his ego. Next up in our social platform retrospective: Napster! TikTok may currently be the place where up-and-coming musicians are finding their audience and where labels like Universal have banned their artists from sharing music. But rewind a couple decades and there was one indisputable home of music on the internet: Napster. Only one problem: it was probably all illegal.~~~Ah, to be 19 again. It's a time of possibilities, insecurities, of worrying about what adulthood is really going to be like. On the other hand, if you're Shawn Fanning or Sean Parker, your worries at 19 were a little bigger. As in, "multimillion-dollar legal battles with the entire music industry" bigger. And all because of a piece of software that let you listen to and download music from all across the internet...without paying the artists. What could go wrong?Ray teaches Rob about how a crazy idea on an Internet chat forum grew into the software start-up Napster; how Ray can trace his love of Monty Python to the early days of digital music downloads; how the music industry was forced to reckon with the reality that physical media had become a relic of the past; why pissing off Lars Ulrich is a bad idea; and why Napster's brief and shining moment in the world of online music streaming was the beginning of a trend that completely changed the way the world listens to music. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. Free Thinking Through the Fourth Turning with Sasha Stone

[Profanity warning…..]There is a scene in David Fincher's The Social Network where Sean Parker (played by Justin Timberlake) has Mark Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) set up a meeting to have the most sought-after genius in tech, deliver an important message: “Sean Parker says f*ck you.”That's what you do when you have the money Mark Zuckerberg was about to have, or if you're the richest man in the world, like Elon Musk. Our government, in complete alignment with the most powerful entities in the country and maybe the world, has been trying to destroy Elon Musk since he bought Twitter and turned it into X. Every decision he makes is proof, they insist, that the app is about to collapse and Musk will be humiliated, ruined, and destroyed. You might recognize the pattern. They've done the same thing, for seven years, to Trump. They've had no problem weaponizing the DOJ, raiding Mar-a-Lago, and indicting him on phony placeholder charges as the media runs with the lie that it's for “inciting an insurrection.” They've even tried to remove his name from the ballot in several states for something he's not even charged with. Napster was a revolutionary music file-sharing service that was launched in 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker. It allowed users to easily share their MP3 files with each other over the internet. You need to come out altogether from the shadowy powers that operate within the present creation, doomed as it is to decay and perish. You need to belong instead to God's new world, the new creation that is being brought in to replace the old. The truly human life you seek — the life of a genuine, glad holiness that runs right through the personality — is to be found in that new world.” -N.T. This will obviously give him a new set of values. Things which the world thought important, he will no longer worry about. Ambitions which dominated the world will be powerless to touch him. He will go on using the things of the world but he will use them in a new way. He will, for instance, set giving above getting, serving above ruling, forgiving above avenging. The Christian's standard of values will be God's not men's.” -William Barclay, "Commentary on Colossians" 11. “The first and most basic thing we can and must do is to keep God before our minds. This is the fundamental secret of caring for our souls. Our part in thus “practicing the presence of God” is to direct and redirect our minds constantly to Him. In the early time of our “practicing” we may well be challenged by our burdensome habits of dwelling on things less than God. But these are habits–not the law of gravity–and can be broken. A new, grace-filled habit will replace the former ones as we take intentional steps toward keeping God before us. Soon our minds will return to God as the needle of a compass constantly returns to the north. If God is the great longing of our souls, He will become the pole star of our inward beings.” -Dallas Willard, "The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus' Essential Teachings on Discipleship" 12. “The real problem of humanity is that we have stone-age emotions and brains, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.” -E.O. As he recounts his personal journey, Sean bravely confronts the challenges he faced throughout the legal process, including the obstacle of his stammer, a speech impediment that left him immensely disadvantaged in court. Compounding the complexity of his situation was the backdrop of the #MeToo movement, which fueled further challenges and biases against him. We explore the impact of these events and the broader issue of the perceived unfairness within the judicial system when it comes to men and cases of sexual abuse. Emotions. They play an essential role in creating our perceptions throughout life.  They signal awareness of our current circumstances and guide our day-to-day interactions. They determine, to varying degrees, our thoughts, feelings, and interactions.  Yet, for many of us, putting our thoughts and feelings into words can be particularly difficult. Naming our emotions enables more effective self-regulation by engaging various mechanisms within our emotional and physiological systems. Our guest today, author, Sean B.W. Parker shares his experiences with trauma, the criminal justice system, and stammering. We discussed how rumination and anticipatory anxiety can be used to reframe thought processes and how they can use Sean's story to explore the underlying issues and causes. They agreed to start from Sean's experiences within the criminal justice system and work backward. Parker shared how he was thrust into a new environment as a young person and experienced racism and stammering, which led to feelings of shame. He discussed his family dynamic and how his older brother resented his presence, leading to a subconscious competition for their mother's love. Sean Parker discussed the criminalization of young men in the criminal justice system and how creativity can be a source of expression and liberation. He also discussed the difficulty of expressing himself in prison due to his stammering and the lack of resources available. He also discussed the importance of honest conversations in the media and how it can help to get around the lies.  As a means to manage his difficult emotions, Sean shared how he played drums in a prison band and how he was able to remain calm and rational in a difficult situation. He and Jeffrey Besecker discussed the concept of ego and how it can be used as a perceptive filter. They also discussed the stigmatism around certain topics and how to approach them without judgment. They agreed to have another conversation soon to discuss justice reform.
