Last week was Valentine's Day and as I ran errands I saw so many emotions about this holiday. At one store I saw people sending beautifully packaged gifts to their loved ones and at another I heard someone complaining about how much they hate the day and find it stressful or depressing. These conversations led to a fun realization that many things like Valentine's Day are just social constructs, things we attach emotions to for better or for worse. This got me thinking: What else in life do we accept as given when in reality we have the power to redefine our experience? In this episode we explore how social agreements like holidays and traditions affect our emotions, and how our personal experiences shape our perception of certain events. We'll talk about how to reclaim control over expectations and create meaning that aligns with our values. I'll also share a new way to celebrate love not just on Valentine's Day, but everyday and give you questions to help you examine what's really important in your life. Join me on this Wise Walk as we talk about societal expectations and how we can choose to shape our own reality. As you reflect on Valentine's Day, what emotions surface? Are they highs, lows, or somewhere in between? Does your experience change year to year based on what's happening in your life? Why do you think this holiday affects your energy so strongly? How does the idea of love and caring influence your feelings about this holiday? Where are you giving your power away? What do you want to do about it? How do you want to design this day in your life? How can you take it one step further and apply this beyond Valentine's Day? How are you designing your daily life around constructs that influence your energy? Can you recognize how these agreements shape your emotions? Can you shift them in a way that better serves you? Can you make strategic decisions to create a different experience for yourself? What feelings surface for you, and what choices or actions can you take to shift your energy? What areas of your life do you want to explore to determine what is made up and what is truly serving you? What can you start to examine and peel back to understand what is real? What is rooted in an agreement you made that you still want to honor? What is rooted in an agreement that no longer aligns with you? What steps can you take to change what no longer serves you? Where can you get curious about the belief systems or constructs shaping your life? How can you use them to your benefit so they align with you? How can you let go of what no longer serves you? I'm so grateful you join me on these Wise Walks each week. So whether it's Valentine's Day, a Valentine's year, or even a Valentine's decade, let's celebrate love, appreciation, and self-love in whatever way feels right to you. I hope this episode gave you a fresh perspective and the freedom to create your own rules, or let go of the ones that no longer bring you joy. Stay curious, stay true to yourself, and I'll see you on our next Wise Walk. In this episode: [04:03] As I reflect back, I realize there's a lot of pressure around this holiday. I feel differently about it now that I'm single. [05:15] My friend had a similar experience. Acknowledging people with a loving heart centered connection makes them light up. [06:58] I was thinking of ways to practice self love and self care on Valentine's Day and make up my own rules. [07:19] I was even thinking about getting my taxes done as a way to practice self-love. [09:15] What is real? So much is rooted in agreement as made up rules. [10:50] In my conversations with Paul Cuneo, I'm exploring what is made up, what is true, and what is coded. [13:56] Peeling back names and labels of religions out there, you realize a lot of the belief systems are more similar than not, but coded language creates differences, which are not necessarily true and real. [14:27] We're all entitled to our individual experiences. [15:11] Deadlines are made up. Often we need them in order to get things done. Memorable Quotes: “Valentine's Day is every day. I don't need a holiday to mark loving and caring and nurturing.” - Mary Tess “You are completely entitled to your individual experience. I am entitled to my individual experience.” - Mary Tess “There are so many things that are made up in this lifetime, like truly made up. There are made up constructs. There are made up holidays. And we attach emotions to them.” - Mary Tess Links and Resources: Mary Tess Rooney Email Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | Instagram Heart Value Paul Cuneo: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-cuneo PaulWrites.media
There may be no poet more integral to the American identity are more widely known among Americans than Robert Frost. Yet, his life and the extent of his influence are unfamiliar or misunderstood by many. In the new book “Love and Need: The Life of Robert Frost's Poetry” Adam Plunkett challenges previous biographers' interpretations of Frost's life and work breaking away from what he sees as “clichés” to construct an original portrait of the poet.

Arcana Coelestia 730…anyone undergoing temptation experiences vastation of all things that belong to the proprium and of things that are bodily - for things of the proprium and those that are bodily have to die, doing so indeed through conflict and temptation, before he is reborn a new man, that is, before he becomes spiritual and celestial. AC 5246. And they brought him hastily out of the pit. That this signifies a speedy rejection of such things as from the state of temptation were a hindrance; and thereby a change, is evident from the signification of a “pit,” as being a state of vastation and also of temptation (see n. 4728, 4744, 5038); and from the signification of “bringing him hastily out of it,” as being a speedy rejection of such things as are from it, that is, from a state of temptation. For when a “pit” denotes a state of temptation, “to bring anyone hastily out of it” denotes to remove such things as are from that state, and consequently to reject them, as is plain also from what follows; for he rejected what was of the pit, inasmuch as he shaved himself and changed his garments. [2] A state of temptation in respect to the state after it is also like the condition of a pit or prison-squalid and unclean; for when man is being tempted, unclean spirits are near him, and surround him, and excite the evils and falsities with him, and also hold him in them and exaggerate them, even to despair. Hence it is that the man is then in squalor and uncleanness. Moreover when this state is presented to view in the other life (for all spiritual states can there be presented to the sight) it appears like a thick mist exhaled from unclean places, and a stench from it is also perceived. Such is the appearance of the sphere that encompasses one who is in temptation, and also in vastation, that is, who is in a pit in the lower earth (see n. 4728). [3] But when the state of temptation ceases, the mist is dispersed, and the sky clears. The reason of this is that by means of temptation the falsities and evils with man are laid open and removed; when they are laid open that mist appears, but when they are removed the clear sky appears. The change of this state is also signified by Joseph's “shaving himself and changing his garments.” [4] Moreover, a state of temptation may be compared to the state of a man when among robbers; on escaping from which his hair is disheveled, his countenance wild, and his clothing torn. If he yields in temptation, he remains in a state like this; but if he conquers in temptation, then after he has composed his face, combed his hair, and changed his clothing, he comes into a cheerful and serene state. Moreover, there are infernal spirits and genii, who like robbers surround and attack the man at these times, and bring on the temptations. From this it is now plain that by their “bringing him hastily out of the pit” is signified a speedy rejection of such things as from the state of temptation were a hindrance, and thereby a change. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to keep the focus on understanding the Text in terms of its application to the inner life along with reinforcing any key LP principles that have been highlighted in the exchanges.

Welcome to Episode 256 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. This week, now that we have completed Book 1 of Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," we are going to complete our series on the Epicurean gods by addressing a common question: Did Epicurus think that his gods had real physical existence? Today's Text> We are bridging over from the following contained at the very end of Book One of On The Nature of The Gods: XLIV. ... But Epicurus, you say, has written a book concerning sanctity. A trifling performance by a man whose wit is not so remarkable in it, as the unrestrained license of writing which he has permitted himself; for what sanctity can there be if the Gods take no care of human affairs? Or how can that nature be called animated which neither regards nor performs anything? Therefore our friend Posidonius has well observed, in his fifth book of the Nature of the Gods, that Epicurus believed there were no Gods, and that what he had said about the immortal Gods was only said from a desire to avoid unpopularity. He could not be so weak as to imagine that the Deity has only the outward features of a simple mortal, without any real solidity; that he has all the members of a man, without the least power to use them—a certain unsubstantial pellucid being, neither favorable nor beneficial to any one, neither regarding nor doing anything. There can be no such being in nature; and as Epicurus said this plainly, he allows the Gods in words, and destroys them in fact; and if the Deity is truly such a being that he shows no favor, no benevolence to mankind, away with him! For why should I entreat him to be propitious? He can be propitious to none, since, as you say, all his favor and benevolence are the effects of imbecility.

Everyone who has a foot in the world of psychiatric diagnosis seems to agree that our diagnostic system could, at the very least, use some updating, if not burning it down and starting over.So how do we approach developing constructs of psychiatric diagnoses that are more complex, more accurate, more flexible, and more context-specific than what we've been taught or what exists in the DSM-V?Today, I'm excited to share my conversation with Dr. Miri Forbes, an expert in psychopathology and one of the authors of the paper, “Reconstructing Psychopathology: A Data-Driven Reorganization of the Symptoms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.” Dr. Forbes and her colleagues are doing innovative research on creating more empirically-supported diagnostic constructs. This approach to symptoms, categorization, and how we think about and use diagnostic constructs is one that I hope will help us get out of the habit of taking our current diagnostic constructs too literally.Dr. Forbes, an Associate Professor at Macquarie University's School of Psychological Sciences, is focused on improving our understanding of the empirical structure of psychopathology based on the specific patterns in which symptoms of mental disorders tend to co-occur.She is an Associate Editor of The Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science, and serves on the Editorial Boards of Clinical Psychological Science and The Journal of Emotion and Psychopathology. Additionally, Dr. Forbes is a member of the Executive Board of the international Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) Consortium.Listen to the full episode to hear:How a dimensional model can potentially help decrease stigmatizing and pathologizing of individual human experiencesHow the regrouping of symptoms creates potential for more fruitful research into how and why symptoms cluster and how best to treat themWhy reliance on current categorization and diagnostic criteria can cause clinicians to miss or lose vital information about clientsReckoning with the utility of existing diagnoses like BPD that may lack statistical supportLearn more about Dr. Miri Forbes:WebsiteTwitter: @MiriForbesLearn more about Riva Stoudt:Into the Woods CounselingThe Kiln SchoolInstagram: @atherapistcantsaythatResources:Reconstructing Psychopathology: A data-driven reorganization of the symptoms in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders

David Trainer, founder and president at New Constructs — who put Nvidia stock in "The Danger Zone ahead of its earnings report at the end of August, just before the stock cratered — says that the market and economic conditions are changing and lower liquidity and a slowing economy "is a recipe for a major correction in a lot of individual stocks," and that companies with misleading earnings are particularly likely to be punished. That's why he put Dayforce in the Danger Zone, because it has "the most overstated earnings" in the Standard & Poor's 500. Trainer also reiterates his call on Nvidia, noting that despite the stock's recent drop, it has a lot more room to fall. John Cole Scott, president of Closed-End Fund Advisors discusses how investors in closed-funds trading at premiums can use sector-swapping to turbocharge their gains, selling funds trading at premiums to buy similar funds currently at discounts, and provides examples of how this would pay off now. Andrew Leigh, author of “How Economics Explains the World: A Short History of Humanity,” discusses how almost everything — from climate change to the instrument a child plays — is impacted by economics and how economics can therefore be used for better decision-making. And in the Market Call, George Young, co-manager of the Villere Balanced and Villere Equity funds, talks about having the patience to let long-term plays on smaller companies pay off.

Welcome back to the developing trilogy of the bot-human construct Nomad ISIL-8 in NOTORIOUS and OUTSIDERS by Jason Price, a.k.a. Always Checkers Publishing. ISIL-8 has narrowly avoided the Trade Alliance and escaped through FTL travel to a remote corner of the galaxy. Through interrogating the mystic-marked assassin nomad and covert communications to ally nomads and other contacts throughout the galaxy, the bot-construct narrows down their answers to a small section of space on their star chart. But, as they close in, a terrifyingly well-encrypted message from an Old Empire base goads ISIL-8 to a crystalline planet known as Nos, where the mystic-marked have been living in refuge for years. The assassin warns ISIL-8 that it's a trap, but the allure of answers and freedom for their clone batch siblings is too great... On Nos, ISIL-8 finds that Ka Lirra's efforts to deprive the Old Empire of the bot-construct army did not end their efforts, as a new species known as Ghol have taken over the program with incomplete notes, which has led to unfortunate results. Will ISIL-8 be able to stop the cloning facilities and free their kind? The trilogy nears its conclusion... Did you like all those sound effects and music?! Dive into a thought-provoking discussion that challenges the very foundations of our social structures and personal beliefs. This episode explores the profound implications of how fear and the desire for security drive the formation of groups and societal norms. From the insanity of paying to live on a planet we were born on to the collective irresponsibility fostered by group mentality, we unravel the intricate ways in which our fears shape reality. We question the validity of our social contracts, the absurdity of societal rules, and the impact of our habitual need for external validation. Join us as we uncover the potential for a world where mutual appreciation and individual responsibility could lead to transformative change. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Against Aschenbrenner: How 'Situational Awareness' constructs a narrative that undermines safety and threatens humanity, published by GideonF on July 15, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary/Introduction Aschenbrenner's 'Situational Awareness' (Aschenbrenner, 2024) promotes a dangerous narrative of national securitisation. This narrative is not, despite what Aschenbrenner suggests, descriptive, but rather, it is performative, constructing a particular notion of security that makes the dangerous world Aschenbrenner describes more likely to happen. This piece draws on the work of Nathan A. Sears (2023), who argues that the failure to sufficiently eliminate plausible existential threats throughout the 20th century emerges from a 'national securitisation' narrative winning out over a 'humanity macrosecuritization narrative'. National securitisation privileges extraordinary measures to defend the nation, often centred around military force and logics of deterrence/balance of power and defence. Humanity macrosecuritization suggests the object of security is to defend all of humanity, not just the nation, and often invokes logics of collaboration, mutual restraint and constraints on sovereignty. Sears uses a number of examples to show that when issues are constructed as issues of national security, macrosecuritization failure tends to occur, and the actions taken often worsen, rather than help, the issue. This piece argues that Aschenbrenner does this. Firstly, I explain (briefly and very crudely) what securitisation theory is and how it explains the constructed nature of security. Then, I explain Sears (2023)'s main thesis on why Great Powers fail to combat existential threats. This is followed by an explanation of how Aschenbrenner's construction of security seems to be very similar to the most dangerous narratives examined by Sears (2023) by massively favouring national security. Given I view his narrative as dangerous, I then discuss why we should care about Aschenbrenner's project, as people similar to him have been impactful in previous securitisations. Finally, I briefly discuss some more reasons why I think Aschenbrenner's project is insufficiently justified, especially his failure to adequately consider a pause, the fact he is overly pessimistic about international collaboration whilst simultaneously overly optimistic that AGI wouldn't lead to nuclear war, . There is lots I could say in response to Aschenbrenner, and I will likely be doing more work on similar topics. I wanted to get this piece out fairly quickly, and it is already very long. This means some of the ideas are a little crudely expressed, without some of the nuances thought out; this is an issue I hope future work will address. This issue is perhaps most egregious in Section 1, where I try to explain and justify securitisation theory very quickly, and if you want a more nuanced, in depth and accurate description of securitisation theory, (Buzan, Wæver and de Wilde, 1998) is probably the best source. Section 1- What is securitisation Everything we care about is mortal. Ourselves, our families, our states, our societies and our entire species. Threats can come that threaten each of these. In response, we allow, and often expect, extraordinary measures to be taken to combat them. This takes different forms for different issues, with the measures taken, and the audience they must be legitimised to, different. With COVID, these measures involved locking us in our homes for months. With Islamic terrorism, these involved mass surveillance and detention without trial. With the threat of communism in Vietnam, these involved going to war. In each of these cases, and countless others, it can be considered that the issue has been 'securitised'; they entered into a realm where extraordinary measures can b...
Relativism is self-defeating. The very claim, “you shouldn't force your morals on others” is an attempt to force some moral rule on those who disagree.
David Trainer, founder and president of New Constructs, was still in a festive Fourth of July mood, so instead of going to his usual spot in "The Danger Zone," he picked a quality, classic American business as a potential buy, singling out HF Sinclair, the oil company, for "The Attractive Zone." Between consistent growth in its dividend and stock buy-backs, Trainer says HF Sinclair could have a potential yield of 10 percent or more. Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst and Washington bureau chief at BankRate.com weighs in on Friday's jobs report and what some weakness in those numbers suggests for when the Federal Reserve will decide it's time to cut interest rates. William Vanderbloemen, founder and chief executive officer at Vanderbloemen Search Group, discusses the skills and traits that workers will want to bring to the job in a world where artificial intelligence is expected to take over a lot of tasks. In the Money Life Market Call, Rob Isbitts, co-founder and chief investment strategist at Sungarden Investment Publishing, talks about YARP, his "Yield at a Reasonable Price" strategy.
Welcome, Witches! In this special bonus episode of Witch Talk, Bri dives into the fascinating topic of gender and astrology beyond traditional binary constructs. As we wrap up Pride Month, Bri reflects on the rigid gender roles traditionally assigned to planets and zodiac signs and explores how a more inclusive, non-binary approach can enrich our understanding and practice of astrology. Drawing on cultural perspectives that recognize a spectrum of genders, Bri challenges us to rethink these outdated norms and consider how modern interpretations can lead to more holistic and personalized astrological readings. A recent study looked into life-threatening Acanthamoeba infections, and a few deaths, linked to the use of tap water with devices like neti pots. And, in ‘The Balanced Brain,' Dr. Camilla Nord explores the neuroscience behind mental health, and how our brains deal with life's challenges.Scientists Warn Against Nasal Rinsing With Unboiled Tap WaterResearchers at the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention published a study Wednesday that examined 10 cases of life-threatening Acanthamoeba infections that occurred after people cleaned their sinuses with neti pots, squeeze bottles, or other nasal rinsing devices. In most of these cases, which occurred in immunocompromised individuals over the span of a few decades, individuals had used tap water for nasal rinsing.Tap water, while generally safe to drink, is not sterile. Microorganisms and germs live in distribution systems and pipes that the water travels through, and Acanthamoeba amebae was the main link between the 10 cases, three of which resulted in death.Although contracting the Acanthamoeba pathogen is extremely rare, many people are unaware of the unsterile nature of tap water and use it for their sinuses, according to a survey study published last year. A third of participants incorrectly believed U.S. tap water is sterile, and almost two-thirds assumed it was safe to rinse your sinuses with it.The CDC and FDA recommend using distilled or sterile water for nasal rinsing. If you want to use tap water, they recommend boiling it for three to five minutes and allowing it to cool. While slightly more time consuming, it is an effective way to get sterile water.Rachel Feltman, host of “The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week,” joins Ira to talk about this story and other news in science this week, including a new study that links microplastics in the human body to increased risk of heart disease and death, why the U.S. maternal mortality rate might be inflated, and why cicadas produce high-speed jets of urine. How Your Brain Constructs Your Mental HealthIf you've ever struggled with a mental health issue like anxiety or depression, or know someone who has, it's pretty clear that what works for one person might not work for another. Antidepressants only work in about 50-60% of patients. Meditation or yoga may be a gamechanger for some people, but ineffective for others.Over the past few decades, neuroscientists have made huge advances in our understanding of the human brain. How can we use the latest neuroscience research to help improve our mental well-being? And what is the relationship between physical and mental health? To answer those questions and more, SciFri producer Shoshannah Buxbaum talks with Dr. Camilla Nord, director of the Mental Health Neuroscience Lab at the University of Cambridge and author of the new book The Balanced Brain: The Science of Mental Health.Read an excerpt of The Balanced Brain at sciencefriday.com.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
