Alex interviews Mike Fata, the founder of Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods, maker of the Hemp Heart product sold internationally. The company has made two acquisitions (yes, two!) under Mike Fata's leadership, the second of which is for approximately half a BILLION dollars. He created the hemp seed category and educated consumers on how to use them (in a smoothie, on yogurt, on a salad, in food). The Hemp Hearts are a nutritional powerhouse, with Omega 3/6/9, healthy fats, and protein. Enjoy this special interview with a wonderful Canadian native who has experienced the thrill of triumph twice, as well as Mike's current objective in life, which includes assisting entrepreneurs, investing, and more. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/genius-juice/support

Mike Fata’s entrepreneurial journey began when he dropped out of high school. It culminated in the $419 million acquisition of the company he co-founded, global hemp foods producer Manitoba Harvest. Reflecting on his remarkable ascent, Fata mentions one regret: that he didn’t “dream bigger.” Launched in 1998, Manitoba Harvest, which is best known for its popular Hemp Hearts brand, has played a critical role in education about and mainstream adoption of hemp, beginning in its home market of Canada and later in the United States. Seventeen years after the company’s debut, Fata guided a majority sale of Manitoba Harvest at an enterprise value of $132 million. He helped lead a second sale of the company four years later when it was acquired by Canadian cannabis company Tilray for the aforementioned $419 million. Two nine-figure exits… not bad for someone who left school at age 13.  In the following interview, Fata spoke about how educating himself about nutrition and healthy living led him to hemp, overcoming government-led and generational disinformation about the crop, why he laments not seeing greater potential for the company early into its development and where he drew inspiration for confidence as a CEO. Show notes:  0:48: Interview: Mike Fata, Founder, Manitoba Harvest -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with Fata and discussed the entrepreneur’s mentorship of brand founders on social media app Clubhouse, his path from bullied teen to health and hemp guru, the Canadian government’s role in the creation and launch of Manitoba Harvest and how the DEA stunted the company’s foray into the U.S. Fata also spoke about how people and organizations in the natural foods community helped him become a better leader, why he describes himself as “a born entrepreneur but a made CEO,” what Whole Foods taught him about team building, the retail partners that helped educate mainstream consumers about hemp and the importance of humility when bringing leaders to help scale the company. Later, he discussed his involvement as an investor in several fast growing food brands and how he advises entrepreneurs when it comes to navigating a crowded and competitive market for natural foods. Brands in this episode: Manitoba Harvest, Dr. Bronner’s, Stonyfield, Love Good Fats, OM Mushroom

Why have a breakfast smoothie or post workout smoothie and not a meal? It’s fast. It’s simple. It’s full of both micronutrients and macronutrients you want (and you can adjust). It’s delicious. My Smoothie Template 30 grams of protein 2 cups of greens (or other veggies) 15 grams of fiber (or a boost in fiber according to your status) low carb and low sugar adaptogens and antioxidants (greens, maca, turmeric, cinnamon, cacao) healthy fat (avocado, nut butter) amount and type of liquid to blend a smoothie or a smoothie bowl There are times when I will decrease carbs and fat for a short time to naturally detox and support liver function. Benefits Reduce decision fatigue. Enhance routine AND increase diversity. Decrease prep & clean up time. You can easily enjoy yummy meals while you remove unknowing food sensitivities like dairy. For a lot of women over 50 using Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or whey protein they were unknowingly using. Other breakfast problems are eggs, wheat (bread, cereals, bars with a barcode), and gluten. That just wiped out American breakfasts. Not to say you occasionally can’t have eggs. But if that’s your daily breakfast you could be causing weight loss resistance, bloating, or skin issues unknowingly. Inflammation from those things can cause water retention, visceral belly fat, and prevent weight loss. If you’re not at your ideal weight it’s definitely worth a try. You don’t have to be lactose intolerant or celiac to experience benefits removing these foods. All protein powders are not created equal. You also want to be very clear on what you want and don’t. An ingredients list that has less than 10 ingredients is my preference. A lot of items in some protein powders are “filler” because they’re cheaper to use. I don’t want “added nutrients” that might compete with the nutrients in my supplements that I’m taking. Your body can only absorb so many, so if you’re taking in more you may prevent absorbing of what you need. I like to choose what I’m adding based on my micronutrient levels, signs and symptoms, and or for immune boosting during times like these. Proteins Flipping 50 Plant Power (pea) Flipping 50 Paleo Power (hydro beef dairy and soy free) Salmon Wild Meats: Ground bison, elk, venison Chicken or Turkey Beans – ½ cup 6-8 grams Legumes Quinoa – 6-8 grams Hemp Hearts  - 10 grams/3 T Dr. Gabrielle Lyons is a prior guest on the show and a simple share she gave to categorize the quality of protein is whether it runs, flys, or swims. That’s your highest quality protein source list, all coming before plant-based protein. I will be interviewing Dr Anna Cabecca soon about her new program and why protein is such an important part of it. Show notes: https://www.flippingfifty.com/breakfast

It seems to me that how I start my day off...especially the first 1-2 hours, often dictates how the rest of my day goes, or to what degree I will navigate the ups and downs of it successfully. And I’m not alone in thinking this. It’s not surprising that many of the podcasts I listen to often ask their guests what their morning routines or rituals look like (i.e. Tim Ferriss, Rich Roll, Lewis Howes, etc.). They do this because they know that a lot of research both statistical and anecdotal point to the fact that how we start our morning plays a big part in how are days go.   As a life long night owl this has been a really hard reality for me to not only wrap my head around, but actually come around to practicing it. But if a 12am-2am’er such as myself can go to bed by 11pm so he can start his day off right the next morning..then maybe that tells you all you need to know about how important our morning routines are.   I have by no means mastered my morning, and I really doubt I ever will. Because life is life, and sometimes it gets complicated and busy. But I can tell you this. I have worked really hard over the last several years to experiment with and implement different disciplines and practices into my life to see not only how they would affect my morning routine, but to really test out if becoming a morning person was all that important.   And after much trial and error I’ve come up with 9 disciplines and practices that I use pretty regularly in my morning routine. The routine is not perfect, but more often than not when I’m hitting on all cylinders, these 9 practices are evident in my daily morning routine (even as I write this post for the podcast I did have 8 of the 9 disciplines present in my morning routine -- Headspace didn't happen today -- that tends to be the one I trade off with the journal). And even when I’m not running on all cylinders, you can find me practicing most of these disciplines on a daily basis.   The good news is that after much experimentation and practice with one discipline at a time, I was slowly able to add another one, create a habit, till eventually most of my morning routine is less of a laborious conscious effort, and one that has developed into a nice flow and rhythm in my day.   In this episode I will explore my 9 practices and disciplines that embody my first few hours of my day...my morning routine: Body Movement (running, lifting weights, yoga, stretching, cycling, swimming, etc.) Listening to podcasts that inspire growth and challenge beliefs. Avoid the consumption of technology that dictates my day rather than keeps me from creating (email, news feeds, social media feeds, etc.) for the first 1-4 hours of my day. Make the bed.
