Les Szabo from Dr. Bronner's (LinkedIn) joined me on the podcast for a deep conversation about the Purpose Pledge and the work he is spearheading. We explore the misalignment between business and the living world, what it means to operate in right relationship, and how the Purpose Pledge turns values into visible action rather than another reporting exercise. With 90% of a company's impact sitting in its supply chain and 6 in 10 consumers believing companies are purpose washing, this work feels more urgent than ever. A concrete conversation about regenerative business, healthier forms of capital, and transforming food and agriculture supply chains. Enjoy!

Les Szabo discusses the Purpose Pledge, a holistic framework for companies aiming to operate with integrity and in alignment with their higher purpose. He discusses why the Purpose Pledge was created, how they decided to focus on companies working in food and agriculture, and how they settled on their 10 commitments. The conversation highlights the need for shared standards, systems of support, and collaboration to drive systemic change in business practices. Dr. Bronner has overseen the administration and investments of the Retirement Systems of Alabama for 53 years. To say he has done a spectacular job would be a pronounced understatement. Dr. Bronner has been a genius as an investor and innovator. However, his most innovative venture was the creation of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. It was one of the greatest win-win ventures ever accomplished with tax dollars. First, it is one of the state's largest tourist attractions. Second, it made money in its first year... Article Link

Marquis, Sinyi Professor at Cambridge Judge Business School and author of Better Business, Mao and Markets and The Profiteers, joins the show to talk straight. Why the Dr. Bronner's exit and the Nespresso certification forced B Lab to tighten its standards. Why a company's positives can no longer outweigh its negatives. Why regulation catching up is not a threat to B Corp but the highest form of success. We also go where few sustainability conversations dare: China's dominance in clean energy despite its authoritarianism, the risk of a K-shaped world that leaves the Global South behind, and where Africa really stands.

What does it really take to build an ethical supply chain from the ground up? In this show, we learn from one of the very best. Note: Shows are never sponsored, ie companies paying us to appear on the show. An ad is an ad, and the show is the show. I'm publishing this because we all need to believe there are companies out there with mounting proof of concept that you can design for a better world through business. In this powerful conversation, I sit down with Gero Leson, an accomplished physicist and environmental scientist who has worked for some of the biggest companies in the world and then met David Bronner, CEO of Dr Bronner's. David implored him to join Dr Bronner's in the early 2000's, on a mission to build an ethical supply chain of the highest standards. We explore how one of the world's most values-led companies approaches transparency, cross-cultural leadership and business ethics in practice - not just in marketing.Gero shares how Dr Bronner's moved beyond buying ingredients on the open market, moved beyond labels and just ‘trusting it was fine because it sounds good'. They've built companies that farm and produce the raw materials that they use for their famous soaps and other products, as well as selling the raw materials to other brands seeking a fully transparent and ethical, regenerative supply chain. They've done this in Sri Lanka, Ghana, India and beyond. From creating fair-trade supply chains where none had existed to the standard they wanted to uphold, to investing in regenerative agroforestry, community education and healthcare. This is business as a vehicle for agency and dignity. We discuss:Why radical transparency is becoming the antidote to consumer distrustHow ethical sourcing is not about fixing one issue, but committing to long-term engagementThe power of leadership teams over heroic individual leadersWhy dignity and agency motivate teams more than rules and controlThe balance between efficiency and humanity in global businessThis conversation is not idealistic. It is grounded, complex and honest about the challenges. But it is also deeply hopeful. Gero says, “We joke about saving the world with soap but in a way, it's true”. If you have ever wondered whether business can truly be a force for good, this episode offers real-world proof that it can - when values are embedded at every level.Enjoy the show, Alexx Stuart, your host. Fireside Project is a nonprofit that helps reduce the risks of psychedelic experiences through a free support line, coaching, education, and research. In this episode, Joshua White speaks with Psychedelics Today about why real-time support matters, what it takes to run a national hotline, and what Fireside learned after more than 30,000 conversations since launch. White shares how his background as a lawyer and his early hotline volunteering shaped Fireside's model. He also describes how festival harm reduction work, including lessons from Zendo-style support spaces, revealed a major gap: people often need help during an experience and after it ends. A major focus of the conversation is Lucy, Fireside's new voice-to-voice role-play simulator designed to improve psychedelic support skills through low-stakes practice. Early Themes With Fireside Project Joshua White introduces Fireside Project as an accessible safety net for people who are actively having psychedelic experiences or processing past ones. The support line launched on April 14, 2021, and relies on trained community volunteers who commit to a year of service. White explains why anonymity matters. He argues that a phone-based container can make it easier for callers to share vulnerable material without fear of judgment. He also frames service as a key part of integration for volunteers who want to give back or prepare for work in the psychedelic field. Core Insights From Fireside Project White describes the early difficulty of building Fireside from scratch, including legal design, insurance hurdles, training development, and fundraising. He credits seed support from David Bronner and Dr. Bronner's for helping Fireside prove that people would actually use a psychedelic support line. He also explains a key harm reduction point: calling emergency services during a non-medical psychedelic crisis can escalate risk. Fireside aims to help people regulate, re-orient, and stay safer when panic or fear shows up. Key concepts discussed include: The thin line between healing and traumatizing during high-intensity psychedelic states Why callers often need connection, not rescue How volunteer capacity and call volume shape how long conversations run The difference between support during an experience and longer-term coaching support Later Discussion and Takeaways With Fireside Project The conversation then turns to Lucy, a training tool White describes as a "flight simulator" for psychedelic practitioners. Lucy is not part of the live support line. Instead, it offers emotionally responsive role-play scenarios so trainees can practice staying grounded, tracking consent and boundaries, and responding to crisis cues. White also addresses recording and consent. He argues Fireside needs strong training feedback loops to improve safety and quality. He describes an anonymization approach designed to remove phone numbers, strip identifying details, and distort voices while preserving emotional tone. He also explains the post-call option for callers to delete their recorded conversation. Practical takeaways include: Simulation can help trainees stay regulated when intense material emerges Better training can reduce unnecessary diversion to emergency rooms Clear consent language and easy deletion workflows matter for trust Coaching can expand the continuum of psychedelic support beyond therapy

Be fake » (fais semblant devenait alors « Ke fa be » (Kayfabe). “May you live in interesting times,” is supposed to be a Chinese mantra. But according to Cambridge University China expert, Christopher Marquis, our current interesting times are actually a curse for businesses seeking stability rather than disorder. Is this, then, a moment for “strategic hibernation” Marquis asks in a provocative Harvard Business Review piece. Yes, he mostly answers. Businesses are indeed frozen by a perfect storm of uncertainty—overhyped AI, tariffs, and climate disasters. And speaking out in these turbulent times, he warns, can carry severe consequences -such as Jack Ma's “cancellation” and the NBA's exile from Chinese TV demonstrated after political missteps. Marquis, author of Mao and Markets, draws on his decade observing Chinese corporate survival tactics to counsel American companies navigating the stormy Trump waters: continue vital work like DEI internally, but avoid publicly poking the political bear. The Prohibition playbook offers a historical model—1920s brewers pivoted to soft drinks using their core bottling capabilities, hibernating their alcohol-making assets until the environment changed. The exception? Brands built on moral values, like Patagonia and Dr. Bronner's, shouldn't go silent—but even they should seek strength in collective action rather than standing alone. Rather than poking the bear, Marquis concludes about our interesting times, become the bear and hibernate. This is a public episode. The Pedalshift Project: Bicycle Touring Podcast

What if you could tour with just what fits in a single dry bag? No panniers. Just the essentials. On this episode, we take this as a challenge - borrowing from the ultralight backpacking folks, we cut off our toothbrush handles and weigh every gram for the ultralight bikepacking challenge! "What if you could tour with just what fits in your handlebar bag? No panniers. No rack. Just the essentials." Why: curiosity, simplicity, nimble handling, testing limits for overnighters or credit card touring. Rules: one mid-size drybag (say 10–12L). No extra frame or seat bags. Trip assumptions: 1–2 nights, shoulder season, mild weather but possible cool nights. Riding style: paved/mixed surfaces, moderate daily mileage. Shelter Options to debate: Tarp + bivy sack (light, cheap, minimal bug protection). Minimal trekking pole tarp (if you carry a pole or can use the bike). Emergency bivy + bug net (super small but spartan). UL single-wall tent (if you can compress to fit — ~1lb tents exist). Hammock Where I land: Shelter Zpacks Hexamid Pocket Tarp 5.2 oz Dyneema, no floor; packs to fist size Groundsheet Polycryo sheet (cut to size) 1.5 oz Cheap and super compact Bug Net Sea to Summit Nano Pyramid (solo) 2.9 oz Optional if mosquitoes likely Stakes 6 titanium shepherd hooks 2 oz Can share with tarp Guyline 2 mm reflective cord 1 oz Multipurpose (also for repairs) Total Shelter Weight: ~12 oz (340 g) Sleep Kit Pad: short closed-cell foam (Z-lite cut down) vs ultralight inflatable (NeoAir Uberlite). Quilt: 40°F down quilt packs to a grapefruit. Sleep Clothing layering: puffy jacket + base layers to extend quilt rating. pillow (there are some ultralight inflatables too) Where I land: Sleep Pad Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite (small) 6 oz Packs smaller than a soda can Quilt Enlightened Equipment Enigma 40°F 13 oz Compresses to a grapefruit Pillow Exped Air UL pillow (small) 1.6 oz Optional luxury Sleep Clothes Lightweight merino top + boxer briefs 6 oz Doubles as camp wear Total Sleep Weight: ~27 oz (765 g) Cooking vs. No-Cook No-cook: bars, wraps, cold soak jar. Minimal cook: Esbit/solid fuel stove + titanium mug. Coffee strategy: instant packets vs small UL brewer. Space/weight trade-off: ditch cook kit for luxury (camera, extra clothes). Where I land: Cold Soak System Plastic PB jar 2oz Utensil Long Ti spoon 0.5 oz Mug (if separate) MSR Titan 2.4 oz Food for 2 days Wraps, instant oatmeal, nuts, bars, jerky, instant coffee ~24 oz Water 1 L Smartwater bottle (frame-mounted) Total Cooking/Food Weight (excluding water): ~29 oz (820 g) Clothing & Tools No change of clothes on this one… one base layer, puffy jacket layer. Rain shell = big payoff for little space. Simple wool hat Micro tool kit: multi-tool, chain link, tiny pump, patch kit instead of spare tube. hygiene: Dr Bronner's in smallest travel bottle, small camp towel, travel toothbrush. Where I land: Rain Shell Patagonia Houdini or OR Helium 6 oz Ultralight but reliable Insulation Layer Montbell Plasma 1000 puffy 5 oz Packs to palm size Extra Base Layer / socks Wool top + socks 5 oz For camp Toiletries Toothbrush, mini paste, Bronner's, wet wipes 3 oz Minimalist hygiene Headlamp Nitecore NU25 1 oz USB rechargeable Total Clothing/Personal Weight: ~20 oz (570 g) Multitool Lezyne RAP II-12 3 oz Compact essentials Mini Pump Lezyne Pocket Drive 3 oz Mount to frame if possible Chain link / tape / zip ties / patch kit Small zip bag 1 oz Field repairs Phone + powerbank 10 000 mAh Anker 6 oz Also powers headlamp Map / ID / Credit Card — negligible "Ultralight credit card touring" insurance Total Tools/Misc Weight: ~13 oz (370 g) Packing Tetris Bottom: sleep system (quilt/compressed pad). Middle: shelter/tarp. Top: food/clothing. Outside: light rain shell/camp shoes? Safety & Bail Out Options Emergency bail plan: credit card, rideshare, motel. Weather veto: if forecast turns ugly, change trip. My Packed Total Category Weight Shelter 12 oz Sleep 27 oz Cooking/Food 29 oz Clothing/Personal 20 oz Tools/Misc 13 oz Total ~6.31 lb (2.86 kg) inside dry bag Conclusion Who this works for: weekenders, credit card tourists, fair-weather minimalists. Who it doesn't: long winter trips, remote routes with no services, the comfort-oriented The psychological side of going this minimal: what you gain (freedom, simplicity) vs. what you lose (comfort, margin).
