Trump Tariffs and how they will affect CPG Brands and consumers, Emerging Brands New Launches in Retail, and Expo West Gouging The controversial Trump Tariffs announced over the weekend will be going into effect on Tuesday, February 4th, placing up to a 25 % tariff on all goods with exception to energy which is at 10 %. Canada has since retaliated and is threatening to impose their own tariffs on up to $300B worth of US goods coming into Canada starting in February. According to Trump: He has said he plans to impose tariffs for three reasons. “Number one is the people that have poured into our country so horribly and so much,” he said on Thursday. “Number two are the drugs, fentanyl and everything else that have come into the country. Number three are the massive subsidies that we're giving to Canada and to Mexico in the form of deficits.” These tariffs are expected to affect thousands of CPG brands manufacturing and shipping from Canada and Mexico, resulting in higher prices in retail, and potentially affecting velocities and a reduction in sales for these brands looking to continuing to grow in retail According to Mike Fata, Founder of Manitoba Harvest, an entrepreneur who resides in Canada, his latest Linkedin Post says: "Remember, We can be pro-family, pro-team, and pro-country, without crapping on others" In retail expansion news: Glonuts has expanded to Texas and is rolling out to 153 HEB Stores. Also, it may be slightly old news, but WIld Wonder has also expanded nationally in Whole Foods New Hope's Expo West is catching some flack for their high prices for this year's Natural Products Expo West Show, with badge passes costs for manufacturers, suppliers, and other business service companies as high as $4,500 per person. This definitely locks out some emerging brands and service providers looking to grow their business and network

"If you have a foundation of good products and good people, more of the world needs to hear about it." -Mike Fata Hemp is now considered a superfood! Hemp has a very high nutritional profile and offers plenty of health benefits, including being high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber content. A lot of the misconceptions around hemp is associated with it being closely related to marijuana. However, unlike its counterpart, hemp doesn't contain enough THC (0.3%), the chemical compound responsible for getting high. Rather, it is high in Cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid that helps in easing symptoms of many health issues including pain, inflammation, and a wide range of neurological disorders.  Inspired by his own personal health transformation, Mike Fata co-founded Manitoba Harvest, one of today's global leading manufacturers and brands of high-quality hemp food products. Weighing over 300 pounds, Mike took decisive action to change. He focused his diet on fiber, protein, and healthy fats— all components of hemp. Amazed by his results, Mike made it his mission to spread the word about the power of hemp to as many people as possible.    In this episode, Justine and Mike talk about the health benefits of hemp, where to get trusted resources, the foundation of a successful business, what it's like to sell your business, and how the shift in narrative is gradually changing our current food system for the better. Meet Mike: Co-founding Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods in 1998, and serving as Chairman of the Board and CEO until 2016, Mike helped guide the strategic sale of the company to Tilray for $419 million dollars in 2019. Feeling constantly sick, tired, and weighing 300 pounds at 18 years old, Michael Fata embarked on a pursuit of health, which, after much experimentation, led him to the discovery of the benefits of hemp.Hemp, though often confused with marijuana, has no mind-altering properties and is a great source of essential fatty acids. When Michael founded his company, Manitoba Harvest, not only did he have zero high school or college education, but he was also faced with the challenges of hemp being a product with a brand-new supply chain, laden with numerous regulatory challenges. However, Michael's passion for his products, his sound business ethics, and his decision to focus solely on hemp culminated in a hugely successful business. In today's episode, you'll hear about the learnings Michael had along his journey with Manitoba Harvest, some key insights from the experience he has had as an investor since he sold his company, and the various other ways he is helping entrepreneurs to succeed in the business world.Key Points From This Episode:The motivation that sparked Michael's health journey. How Michael became interested in hemp.Examples of some of the major learnings Michael had when he entered the world of business.Confusion relating to hemp and marijuana that made things challenging for ManitobaHarvest when it was starting out.The goals of the Canadian Hemp Trade Association that Michael founded. Why Manitoba Harvest chose to focus solely on hemp.Michael's concern with entrepreneurs who put a lot of emphasis on selling their businesses from the beginning.Advice that Michael gives to entrepreneurs from an investor standpoint. How Michael and his partner are helping other entrepreneurs to succeed in the business world. Why Michael is a fan of social audio platforms like Clubhouse. How Michael maintains his commitment to his own health and wellbeing. The stage of a business's lifecycle when Michael likes to invest, and why.Tweetables:“I always took the high road and built the brand known for the best quality and a great company to do business with, and that's how we really outcompeted all the competitors.” — Michael Fata [0:12:29]“Our mission was to become the experts in hemp, right from the genetics and the farming operation all the way through to the consumer.” — Michael Fata [0:13:27] “If you grow a good business and become a leader in your space, and you get to the right scale, you'll likely have a good opportunity to sell the business. Like many food and beverage entrepreneurs, Buddha Brands co-founders Chris Magnone and Mark Cigos introduced themselves to the industry as exhibitors at Natural Products Expo West. At the time, the Canadian business partners were marketing coconut water, a product they saw as an anchor for a platform of premium and clean label food and drinks aimed at addressing modern consumers' demand for plant-based and nutritious products.  In the years since, Buddha Brands has seen its share of hits and misses and while coconut water is no longer the company's primary focus, the founders' vision persists via a line of keto-friendly snack bars launched in 2020. Made with MCT oil, sunflower seeds and pea protein, the bars contain no sugar alcohols, palm oils, dairy or soy and are now available at over 1,500 natural independent retailers and grocery stores in the U.S. including nationwide at Sprouts. Buddha Brands also completed its first round of outside capital in July, adding $3 million to support retail expansion of the keto bars along with new product development. In an interview featured in this episode, Magnone and Cigos spoke about the formation of Buddha Brands, key learnings from the brand's U.S. debut and how they responded to adversity and innovation that fell flat. They also explained how they have navigated a challenging time for the bar category and why the timing was right to bring in new investment. This episode also includes an interview with Jen Ballen and Joe Magliano, the co-founders of Otherworld Foods, a new company that is pursuing a positive impact on the food system by aligning locally sourced and upcycled ingredients with nostalgia-inspired products. Launched earlier this year, Otherworld markets vegan and superfood-infused pancake and waffle mixes that are currently sold direct-to-consumer. Our conversation offered a glimpse into the company's formation, go-to-market strategy and ambitious mission.   Show notes:   0:52: Interview: Chris Magnone and Mark Cigos, Co-Founders, Buddha Brands -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif spoke with Magnone and Cigos about the community of Canadian food and beverage entrepreneurs, how the founding team came together to form Buddha Brands and why persistence was the key to landing new retail placement. They also explained why it was a mistake to expand distribution too quickly, why the launch of an innovative coconut jerky failed to attract consumers and what they learned from the experience. Later, Magnone and Cigos discussed how the keto bars fit into their original vision for the company, how they were able to persevere amid the pandemic and why they sought non-dilutive capital for Buddha Brands' recent funding round. 45:23: Interview: Jen Ballen and Joseph Magliano, Co-Founders, Otherworld Foods -- Ballen and Magliano sat down with Latif at Expo East 2021 and spoke about the origins of the company and how they recruited a team of world-renowned innovators and chefs to help formulate the mixes. They also discussed why they chose to launch the brand prior to having a product to sell and what they view as the biggest learning curve for early-stage entrepreneurs. Mike Fata’s entrepreneurial journey began when he dropped out of high school. It culminated in the $419 million acquisition of the company he co-founded, global hemp foods producer Manitoba Harvest. Reflecting on his remarkable ascent, Fata mentions one regret: that he didn’t “dream bigger.” Launched in 1998, Manitoba Harvest, which is best known for its popular Hemp Hearts brand, has played a critical role in education about and mainstream adoption of hemp, beginning in its home market of Canada and later in the United States. Seventeen years after the company’s debut, Fata guided a majority sale of Manitoba Harvest at an enterprise value of $132 million. He helped lead a second sale of the company four years later when it was acquired by Canadian cannabis company Tilray for the aforementioned $419 million. Two nine-figure exits… not bad for someone who left school at age 13.  In the following interview, Fata spoke about how educating himself about nutrition and healthy living led him to hemp, overcoming government-led and generational disinformation about the crop, why he laments not seeing greater potential for the company early into its development and where he drew inspiration for confidence as a CEO. Show notes:  0:48: Interview: Mike Fata, Founder, Manitoba Harvest -- Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sat down with Fata and discussed the entrepreneur’s mentorship of brand founders on social media app Clubhouse, his path from bullied teen to health and hemp guru, the Canadian government’s role in the creation and launch of Manitoba Harvest and how the DEA stunted the company’s foray into the U.S. Fata also spoke about how people and organizations in the natural foods community helped him become a better leader, why he describes himself as “a born entrepreneur but a made CEO,” what Whole Foods taught him about team building, the retail partners that helped educate mainstream consumers about hemp and the importance of humility when bringing leaders to help scale the company. Later, he discussed his involvement as an investor in several fast growing food brands and how he advises entrepreneurs when it comes to navigating a crowded and competitive market for natural foods. (FMC – 35) §  Mixed – These body types are not set and stone and people can have a combination of two body types.   A.      Mesomorph – ·         Large Muscle with naturally athletic physique. ·         A mesomorph has a large bone structure, large muscles and a naturally athletic physique. They find it quite easy to gain and lose weight. ·         Traits: § Athletic § Generally hard body § Well defined muscles § Rectangular shaped body § Strong § Gains muscle easily § Gains fat more easily than ectomorphs ·         When it comes to training endomorphs find it very easy to gain weight. Unfortunately, a large portion of this weight is fat not muscle. To keep fat gain to a minimum, endomorphs must always train cardio as well as weights. Usually supplements may not be needed as long as the person has a high protein intake in their diet. ·         Source: http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/body-types-ectomorph-mesomorph-endomorph.html   B.      Rice Is Nice! (Occasion) ·         Each food has a unique nutrient profile — high in some nutrients and low in others. ·         A person who only eats nothing but chicken breasts, rice and broccoli, will still be lacking nutrients that should be balanced out by eating other foods in some of his daily meals. ·         If rice is not for you try other complex carbs, such as yams, oatmeal, potatoes, pasta and whole-grain breads, you will still be covering your bases. ·         Also try mixing some lemon juice and sugar with your rice to get it to separate and to give it moisture. This may make it more palatable for you. If you still don’t like it, then turn to complex carbs that you will enjoy eating. ·         Keeping in mind that food balance is always important to the body. ·         Source: http://www.flexonline.com/nutrition/rice-occasion ·         Source: http://www.examiner.com/article/bodybuilding-and-the-importance-of-rice-the-diet   C.      The Science of Pecs! (da muscles) ·         Pecs – Pectoralis Minor and Pectoralis Major (Images) ·         These are two large, flat muscles that run across the surface of your chest. These muscles generally come into play when pushing something or hugging someone. ·         For men a well form chest helps in self-esteem as well as show to others of physicall of the individual to others. For females it helps to support the breast and show off self-esteem as well.  ·         Pec Tears and Strains (Images) ·         Major reason for injury to pectorals are being overused and lifting to heavy without proper lifting form. ·         Exercises: § Peck Deck § Cable Press § Cable Flyes § Chest Dips § Cable Crossovers § Incline Dumbbell Flys § Dumbbell Flys § Dumbbell Press § Flat Flyes § Incline/Decline Bench Press ·         Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2953288/ ·         Source: http://www.coreperformance.com/knowledge/injury-pain/pectoralis-muscle-strain.html       D.      Protein Deep Dish Pizza!, No Really!! Using a spoon, spread the batter onto either one or two deep-dish pans. I used two small nonstick cheesecake pans, and they worked wonderfully. § Bake at 320 F (160 C) for about 15 minutes or until the crust has cooked through. ·         Ingredients For The Filling §     1 small chopped Onion §     2 chopped Garlic Cloves §     2 cans of Tomatoes §     1/2 cup of Cheddar Cheese (or grated Mozzarella) §     1 cup of Ground Beef (I used Grass-fed beef) §     1 tbsp Rosemary §     1 tbsp Thyme §     Salt to taste ·         Assembly Directions § Add toppings to the crust. Review: Schred1 – Comment (Audio) Review: Schred2 – Clearing Up Comment (Audio) Review: Schred3 – Zak Follow Up (Audio)   Comment: I do believe that the distinction between the different body types is actually very important as long as people understand this is just a very generic scale to give you an idea of how fast your metabolism is. I consider myself an endomorph. I’ve always been the pudgy little guy. When I started working out, I was mostly doing cardio. My goal was to get in shape and feel a bit less ashamed of my body. The problem being that I had a really sweet tooth and preferred by far sweating on a treadmill than going on a diet. Also, from my personal experience, no matter how heavy I lift and how hard I push myself, I can't "lose fat" simply with lifting. Cardio seems to be, if not the only option, at least the best for me. I did very intense cardio for about 5 months. In the end I was weighing 120 lbs for 5'3" and still looked a bit pudgy although I had very skinny arms and could nearly see my ribs. I went to see a dietician who told me being slim would basically mean a drastic change in my lifestyle, both for exercises and diet. However, she also gave me this little explanation about body types, mostly to make me understand I had a slow metabolism and what it would imply. If I wanted to get in shape, it'd have been much easier for me to start lifting than to try and lose fat. So far, my results have been pretty good and I've started out-lifting ectomorphs friends who were ahead of me when I started. All in all, what I'm trying to say is, even though the generalization of body types shouldn't be taking too seriously, having a general idea of the pros and cons of your metabolism can really help you finding the workout and diet that suit you best. I refuse to give up on my occasional cookie or ice cream, but if it hadn't been for learning about the endomorph body type and their ability to gain size easily, I would never have started weightlifting in the first place.   B.      From: Anonymous @Snowheart (Image with Question) Comment: t doesn't seem to look like I've changed much or changed at all after these past two years and it's actually quite demotivating and frustrating to see. I've done what I can within those two years and learning in between. There has been 5x5 (which I've learned quite a bit from previous podcast), HIIT and now, body weight training. Food intake is kept at a minimal as I'm trying to lose those fat and changing them into muscle mass.   Unfortunately, I am unable to fix down on a diet as money is an issue and my family isn't very supportive of what I'm going through. Being a Chinese and whatnot, I'm unable to bring them down to say that white rice is bad for me at the moment cause I did went through that phase and had an argument, even few days ago. We just need to have white rice. I tried adding in brown rice but two issues: 1) it's expensive to obtain and 2) my dad doesn't eat brown rice. Thus, boils down to the issue of food intake where I've been trying to cut half of my portion till now. I know food is a huge issue here but it's difficult in an environment where my parents aren't that supportive of it. That goes for food and for training, I'm on a body weight training with a personal trainer. I've just started on that recently in December 2013 and still going on till now. What I've been doing are push ups, jumping lunges, squats, sand bag training, etc,. It's intense, that much I could say cause my trainer is one hell of a trainer. He pushes and I'm hoping to see results but I'm only on personal training with him once a week. The remaining days, I go on HIIT like RPM classes, biking. I hate running the treadmill and it's not what keeps me motivated. Classes like those keeps me focus and really force myself to push forward. Even after all those, I'm still not gaining or losing much. As you can see from the comparison, it's really demotivating.   I'm only taking whey protein and fat burner as supplements. And I have no access to any nutritionist. Supplements that I'm taking. I'm only taking whey protein and fat burner as supplements. And I have no access to any nutritionist.   C.      From: Fatwolf @All Question: Does anybody know of Soya, Lactose and Dairy free protein shake as I have developed allergies to them.   Zak Source: Yes, Rice and hemp based protein powders have actually been around for some time now.
