Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Special Episode. The chilling reality of healthcare professionals who turn into serial killers is both alarming and rare. Among the most notorious is Dr. Michael Swango, an American physician whose nickname, "Dr. Death," is a grim reflection of his deeds. Swango was convicted of poisoning up to 60 patients between 1981 and 1997. Despite his academic brilliance—he was valedictorian of his high school and earned his MD from Southern Illinois University, Swango betrayed his medical oath, using his position to murder unsuspecting patients. His crimes went undetected for years, and after being convicted, he fled to Zimbabwe, continuing his killing spree. Eventually, the FBI arrested him, and Swango now serves a life sentence without parole, a dark testament to the perversion of trust in the medical profession. Get more details about this and other stories simply by following us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and most all social media platforms. Bruce Sackman, a retired Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, was instrumental in the investigation that led to Swango's capture. Sackman discusses the case and the special team of professionals he led to catch healthcare workers who were serial killers. Swango's case was groundbreaking, revealing the hidden threat within healthcare. The full interview is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. The Unexpected Danger: Serial Killers in Healthcare Health professionals who murder are not common, but they exist more often than most would imagine. Medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, are trusted with patients' lives and are expected to uphold the highest standards. Yet, some have used their positions to kill. Studies suggest that healthcare workers are disproportionately represented among serial killers, with an estimated 1 in 10 serial killers being from the healthcare field. Harold Shipman: The Deadliest Doctor One of the most infamous cases is that of Harold Shipman, a British doctor who was convicted of killing 15 patients, though he is believed to have murdered up to 250 people. Shipman, a trusted family doctor, administered lethal doses of diamorphine to his patients during home visits. Despite growing suspicions, he evaded detection for years, leaving a horrifying trail of death in his wake. H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer Doctor Another notorious figure is Herman Mudgett, better known as Dr. H.H. Holmes, one of America's first serial killers. Holmes, a medical student at the University of Michigan, began his murderous career by stealing corpses and using them for fraudulent insurance claims. He later moved to Chicago, where he built a house specifically designed for murder, complete with secret passages, soundproof rooms, and a kiln for incinerating bodies. Holmes lured young women with promises of marriage, only to rob and kill them. Although he confessed to 27 murders, he is suspected of killing as many as 200 people. Miyuki Ishikawa: The Japanese Midwife of Death In Japan, Miyuki Ishikawa, a midwife, was responsible for the deaths of over 100 newborn babies during the 1940s. Ishikawa, often working with accomplices, convinced poor parents to give up their children, claiming it would be less costly than raising them. She then neglected and killed the infants, with the authorities showing little interest in the crimes. Despite the staggering death toll, Ishikawa served only four years in prison. Dr. Josef Mengele: The Angel of Death Perhaps the most infamous medical professional in history is Dr. Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death." Mengele, a Nazi officer and physician at Auschwitz, conducted horrifying experiments on prisoners, killing and torturing countless victims under the guise of medical research. His crimes are almost beyond comprehension, making him one of history's most evil and corrupt physicians. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. The Dark Side of Healthcare: Medical Serial Killers The methods of serial killers vary, but those in the healthcare profession often use their knowledge to kill without suspicion. Unlike typical serial killers, who might stalk or abduct their victims, healthcare serial killers operate under the guise of care, making them especially dangerous. Historically referred to as "angels of mercy," these killers are now recognized as "healthcare serial killers," a term that more accurately reflects their crimes. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Bruce Sackman's book, Behind the Murder Curtain: Special Agent Bruce Sackman Hunts Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Our Veterans, offers a detailed account of his investigations into these rare and terrifying killers. The book provides a chilling glimpse into the minds of healthcare professionals who betrayed their oath and turned into serial killers. The interview is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website and most major podcast Platforms. Catching These Rare Serial Killers The investigation and capture of healthcare serial killers required the collaboration of police, federal agents, and specialized teams. These cases are often uncovered through meticulous investigations, sometimes aided by social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, where traces of their activities may be found. In our final bonus episode for Series 4, we're exploring the truly wild life and genuinely abominable crimes of H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer.Part of the "Something Wicked" series, we start by chatting through how communication technology in the 19th century created a much more anonymous society, one in which a man born Herman Webster Mudgett in New Hampshire could grow up and skip across national borders, and between over a half dozen states, to assume new identities and commit both audacious acts of fraud and ghastly murder sprees for over 20 years without getting caught. We then discuss the specifics of Mudgett's life, including his multiple marriages, early career selling cadavers, and the journey that brought him to his most infamous hunting ground: Chicago, at the time of the 1893 World's Fair. From his many wild money-making schemes to the construction of his custom-built 'Murder Castle' into which he lured and dissected his victims - thought to number up to 200 people - we dig into the details. What is actually known about what he did, what is speculated upon, and how the "yellow journalism" of his time made Holmes a folk hero - all before the truth started to emerge about his grisly journey to incarceration and, ultimately, the hangman's noose.Along the way we'll also be answering important questions, such as, how many wives is too many wives? And how exactly do you build a Murder Castle? But unlike some of our previous Something Wicked subjects, there's no ambiguity about this one: Herman Mudgett was an extraordinarily evil man, and to discover quite how evil then do be sure to gather round the campfire and listen in...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. A Litany of HorrorEpisode 12 is a reading of the chilling confession of Herman Webster Mudgett, better known as H.H. Holmes, one of the most remarkable serial killers in American History. The whole nation was shocked and outraged in the waning years of the nineteenth century by the gruesome deeds of one Herman Mudgett, the arch fiend who took on the pseudonym H.H. Holmes as he prepared his famous "Castle of Death" in downtown Chicago. He was arrested for an insurance fraud in November 1894, but his string of murders, perhaps 200 in all, were soon revealed. He was convicted of one capital crime in Philadelphia, and while he awaited execution, he penned a confession detailing 27 murders that was published in newspapers across the country. He would recant this confession before he hanged, but really, you can't make this stuff up.Ad free Patreon edition with subscription
A 'murder castle' with torture chambers, trapdoors and soundproof rooms to muffle the cries of victims. An alleged body count of 200 people. The case of Herman Mudgett, who'd later be known as the infamous H. H. Holmes, is legendary in the annals of true crime history. But, how much of the case is true? And was H. H. Holmes just a simple conman and swindler that killed people who knew too much about his schemes, or was he responsible for killing hundreds of strangers by luring them into his 'murder castle'? . https://horrorhousetruecrimeandthemacabre.store https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hhpod Insta: @horrorhouse_pod . America's first serial killer was known as a con-man and master manipulator. But Holmes had many skeletons in the closet - literally. Herman Mudgett changes his name later in life so the cons he committed in medical school don't catch up to him. Known as H.H. Holmes, he decided to build a murder castle with a very innocent facade of a pharmacy and other retail shops. The building includes a third-story hotel, where he prays on his guests. No one knew what was on the second floor because Holmes hired and fired multiple workers during the build. With his brilliant mind, could the conspiracy that him being Jack the Ripper be true?

Henry Howard Holmes (born Herman Mudgett, May, 1861) was a privileged youth who undertook medical training at the University of Michigan. Despite being born into relative wealth, Holmes continually schemed to defraud insurance companies -- often by portraying cadavers from the university as accident victims and claiming the life insurances. H H Holmes is most famous however as the creator of Chicago's 'Murder Castle' where he killed numerous victims within the walls of the purpose built building. In addition to being the United State's first documented serial killer, Holmes may also be amongst the most prolific with possibly hundreds of victims. Adding to the mystery is a period of time where Holmes was possibly present in London - during the exact time of the Jack the Ripper murders and there is evidence to support the hypothesis that Holmes was possibly the Ripper...Join Ansir & Sophia as they stray from the paranormal and focus upon the dark and horrifying mysteries of the sinister H H Holmes.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/InquirersintotheStrange)

Holmes descendant Jeff Mudgett. Jeff will join usTop of hour 2; at hour 1, Clarissa will unearth the week’s most compelling and odd True Crime headlines. In HISTORY’s new eight-part series American Ripper, which premiered last night and runs Tuesdays at 10pE/P, the great-great-grandson of Chicago serial killer H.H. Holmes, Jeff Mudgett, is determined to prove a mind-boggling theory: that H.H. Holmes and Britain’s notorious serial killer, Jack the Ripper, were the same man. In addition, Mudgett leads an investigation that secured permission to exhume the presumed body of H.H. Holmes for DNA testing to determine whether he pulled off the ultimate con, escaping the gallows to lead a second secret life. Herman Mudgett, alias H.H. Holmes, was one of America’s first serial killers, rumored to have claimed as many as 200 lives in the late 19th century. A con man, opportunist and evil genius, the crowning achievement of his dark deeds was the construction of a building later dubbed the Murder Castle: a hotel on Chicago’s south side that he engineered to be a factory of death, complete with a gas chamber, dissection room, trap doors and a basement furnace to destroy any trace of his sinister work. Nearly simultaneously, a still-unidentified murderer known as Jack the Ripper was terrorizing prostitutes on the grim streets of London’s Whitechapel district. From the moment 20 years ago when Mudgett’s world was shaken at the revelation that he was the descendant of H.H. Holmes, he became obsessed with acquiring information about his ancestor. Through extensive research, he began to believe the

After a series of near misses by law enforcement HH Holmes went on his last journey, leaving a trail of dead bodies behind him on the way to the great white north. Join us as we talk about him and the motives and consequences of his crimes, on this our first official TCG True Crime episode. Let us know what you think and there is a lot more on the way.Presented by Gordo and Paul---LIVE SHOW ANNOUNCEMENTIm doing a LIVE SHOW as part of the Cork Podcast Festival this weekend on Saturday 12th October in Kino theatre in Cork City. Wednesday, the 15th of August, 1888. Whitechapel, England. Herman Mudgett had business in London, but for the trip, he called himself Dr. Harold Pratt. He brought skeletons from Chicago to sell to the Medical School at the London Hospital. While there, he confirmed that an old friend, Major Roslyn D'Onston Stephenson, a practitioner of black magic, was checked in to the Currie Ward. He’d hoped old "Sudden Death" Stephenson could help him with his "shadow".
Join comedians Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard - McLean as they explore a shared passion, serial killers. Each episode the pair will talk all things murder and macabre and have a right laugh doing it. Episode seventeen looks at "America's first serial killer", H.H.Holmes, or Herman Mudgett as he's more accurately known. A "favourite" of Kiri's he had cracking facial hair and a "Murder Castle",what's not to love? The brilliant Michael J. Dolan is the guest.
The story of Herman Webster Mudgett, otherwise known as H.H. Holmes, has been told numerous times: a brilliant man with so much potential but so inherently evil that his actions would require new words be created to describe the monster that he was. The depravity of someone who would construct a building solely for the purpose of torture, murder, and the "processing" of human bodies for profit, is unimaginable. Although it has inspired numerous books and movies, many people who are not avid true crime fans, have never heard this story. Even if you have heard this story, you'll want to listen to this episode, because we've uncovered an even bigger story which is downright fascinating... Was H.H. Holmes the true identity of Jack the Ripper? We talk to two men who say they know this is a fact, and have spent years trying to prove it. We are joined by Dane Ladwig author of the book "Dr. H. H. Holmes and The Whitechapel Ripper" and Jeff Mudgett author of the book "Bloodstains". Jeff's last name is no coincidence, he claims to be the great-great-grandson of the protagonist in this story, Herman Mudgett, otherwise known as H.H. Holmes.
