In this episode, we delve into the disturbing story of Harold Shipman, one of history's most notorious serial killers. Known as "Dr. Death," Shipman was a trusted family doctor in England who was convicted of murdering 15 patients but is suspected of killing as many as 250 over his decades-long career. How did a man sworn to save lives betray the ultimate trust of his patients, and why did it take so long for his crimes to come to light? We begin by exploring Shipman's early life, his path into medicine, and the red flags that surfaced during his early career—signs that were tragically overlooked. From there, we detail the methods he used to conceal his crimes, exploiting his position to target some of the most vulnerable members of society. His chilling ability to maintain a facade of care and compassion allowed him to evade suspicion for years, even as the body count rose. The episode also examines the investigation that finally brought Shipman to justice. We discuss the tireless efforts of authorities, the pivotal role of a single suspicious death, and the shocking revelations that followed. What made Shipman's crimes so difficult to detect, and how did his arrest uncover failings in the systems meant to protect patients? Beyond the crimes themselves, we explore the aftermath and lasting impact of Shipman's case. It led to sweeping changes in how medical professionals are monitored and how deaths are certified in the UK. But it also left behind a community—and a country—struggling to come to terms with the betrayal of trust at the heart of his horrific acts. Join us as we unpack this harrowing story of trust, betrayal, and the dark side of humanity. This episode is not only a retelling of Shipman's crimes but a reflection on how such horrors could happen and what lessons have been learned to prevent them from ever happening again. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Special Episode. The chilling reality of healthcare professionals who turn into serial killers is both alarming and rare. Among the most notorious is Dr. Michael Swango, an American physician whose nickname, "Dr. Death," is a grim reflection of his deeds. Swango was convicted of poisoning up to 60 patients between 1981 and 1997. Despite his academic brilliance—he was valedictorian of his high school and earned his MD from Southern Illinois University, Swango betrayed his medical oath, using his position to murder unsuspecting patients. His crimes went undetected for years, and after being convicted, he fled to Zimbabwe, continuing his killing spree. Eventually, the FBI arrested him, and Swango now serves a life sentence without parole, a dark testament to the perversion of trust in the medical profession. Get more details about this and other stories simply by following us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and most all social media platforms. Bruce Sackman, a retired Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, was instrumental in the investigation that led to Swango's capture. Sackman discusses the case and the special team of professionals he led to catch healthcare workers who were serial killers. Swango's case was groundbreaking, revealing the hidden threat within healthcare. The full interview is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. The Unexpected Danger: Serial Killers in Healthcare Health professionals who murder are not common, but they exist more often than most would imagine. Medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, are trusted with patients' lives and are expected to uphold the highest standards. Yet, some have used their positions to kill. Studies suggest that healthcare workers are disproportionately represented among serial killers, with an estimated 1 in 10 serial killers being from the healthcare field. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. For more news and updates, follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and numerous other social media platforms. Harold Shipman: The Deadliest Doctor One of the most infamous cases is that of Harold Shipman, a British doctor who was convicted of killing 15 patients, though he is believed to have murdered up to 250 people. Shipman, a trusted family doctor, administered lethal doses of diamorphine to his patients during home visits. Despite growing suspicions, he evaded detection for years, leaving a horrifying trail of death in his wake. H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer Doctor Another notorious figure is Herman Mudgett, better known as Dr. H.H. Holmes, one of America's first serial killers. Holmes, a medical student at the University of Michigan, began his murderous career by stealing corpses and using them for fraudulent insurance claims. He later moved to Chicago, where he built a house specifically designed for murder, complete with secret passages, soundproof rooms, and a kiln for incinerating bodies. Holmes lured young women with promises of marriage, only to rob and kill them. Although he confessed to 27 murders, he is suspected of killing as many as 200 people. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Check out the interview. which is available as a free podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website, or most major podcast platforms. Miyuki Ishikawa: The Japanese Midwife of Death In Japan, Miyuki Ishikawa, a midwife, was responsible for the deaths of over 100 newborn babies during the 1940s. Ishikawa, often working with accomplices, convinced poor parents to give up their children, claiming it would be less costly than raising them. She then neglected and killed the infants, with the authorities showing little interest in the crimes. Despite the staggering death toll, Ishikawa served only four years in prison. Dr. Josef Mengele: The Angel of Death Perhaps the most infamous medical professional in history is Dr. Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death." Mengele, a Nazi officer and physician at Auschwitz, conducted horrifying experiments on prisoners, killing and torturing countless victims under the guise of medical research. His crimes are almost beyond comprehension, making him one of history's most evil and corrupt physicians. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, MeWe and other social media platforms.  The Dark Side of Healthcare: Medical Serial Killers The methods of serial killers vary, but those in the healthcare profession often use their knowledge to kill without suspicion. Unlike typical serial killers, who might stalk or abduct their victims, healthcare serial killers operate under the guise of care, making them especially dangerous. Historically referred to as "angels of mercy," these killers are now recognized as "healthcare serial killers," a term that more accurately reflects their crimes. Health Professionals That Murder: Catching These Rare Serial Killers.  Bruce Sackman's book, Behind the Murder Curtain: Special Agent Bruce Sackman Hunts Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Our Veterans, offers a detailed account of his investigations into these rare and terrifying killers. The book provides a chilling glimpse into the minds of healthcare professionals who betrayed their oath and turned into serial killers. The interview is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, our website and most major podcast Platforms. Catching These Rare Serial Killers The investigation and capture of healthcare serial killers required the collaboration of police, federal agents, and specialized teams. Thursday - January 4, 2024Author and paranormal expert Richard Estep first got involved with paranormal research in 1995 in the UK after attending an overnight investigation at the infamous St. Botolph's ("Skidbrooke" church. In the first half, he shared his latest research into true crime cases that involved murder and betrayal. In the US, you are four times more likely to be killed by someone you know than a stranger. When there's a homicide, the first suspect is usually a family member, he noted, adding that "whenever a man or woman goes missing..the spouse is usually the person the detectives pay the most attention to because quite often that's where the search ends." 90% of this kind of intimate murder is carried out by "an aggressive controlling domineering male," he cited, and usually there are red flags in advance, but they aren't always acted upon.Estep talked about the Amityville Horror murders by Butch DeFeo, who was convicted of killing his family members. Their murders have been someone forgotten in the wake of the ghost stories associated with the home, he commented, but DeFeo admitted in a rare moment of clarity, "There was only one demon at Amityville, and that was me." Estep also touched on the phenomenon of 'serial killers next door'-- murderers who hold down respectable jobs and are sometimes well-liked in their community. One of Britain's most prolific killers, Dr. Harold Shipman, murdered hundreds of his patients with fatal overdoses. He had been considered a "golden boy" and gone to medical school after his mother died of a terminal illness. Estep recalled other cases, including Lizzie Borden, The Moors murders, Jack the Ripper, and when children kill.---------In the latter half, writer, lecturer, personal coach, and filmmaker Caroline Cory discussed her experiences with ETs, the paranormal and the supernatural, and her discoveries in spirituality, and consciousness. She has concluded that consciousness is outside of the brain and conducted various experiments, such as with psychokinesis, to demonstrate this. Cory detailed how, as a young child, she began to see light beings and was able to receive codes or frequencies from them that got translated into a language she could understand. She was eventually given information that relates to a divine plan for the evolution of the planet and intelligent life. She foresees big changes or events happening to the United States in 2024, including a huge economic collapse that is being orchestrated to move the populace into digital currency, and chaos surrounding the election. On the topic of UFO disclosure, she sees more whistleblowers and evidence coming forward though those revelations may be diluted by the nation's other events this year. Cory described one of her ET contacts, a tall blue being with benevolent energy from the Sirius B star system; she merged with the non-human entity, resulting in instantaneous understanding and communication. She also spoke about her documentary, A Tear in the Sky, which explores anomalous aerial phenomena on Catalina Island. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Why do some serial killers choose to end their lives, and what drives the timing of this final act? This thought-provoking question underpins a fascinating discussion on the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski is joined by Dr. Katherine Ramsland, a respected professor of forensic psychology. The conversation delves deep into the mindsets of notorious serial killers, examining their motivations for suicide and the factors influencing their timing.    The dialogue begins with the case of Ted Kaczynski, the infamous Unabomber, whose decision to take his life appeared to stem more from health concerns than remorse or despair. Dr. Ramsland explores various reasons why some serial killers wait years in prison before committing suicide, while others act swiftly upon capture or sentencing. She shares the story of Harold Shipman, who delayed his suicide to ensure his wife could collect his pension, demonstrating a calculated and pragmatic approach to his death.    Another intriguing aspect discussed is the different methodologies serial killers employ to end their lives. Dr. Ramsland provides a detailed account of Israel Keyes' suicide, highlighting his meticulous planning. Keyes, known for his cunning and evasion of law enforcement, ingeniously coiled his bedsheet in a manner that would ensure death by strangulation as he lost consciousness from blood loss.    The conversation shifts to explore the concept of 'suicide by cop' or orchestrating one's own murder in prison. While Dr. Ramsland notes that this is less common among serial killers, she recounts the case of Paul John Knowles, who seemingly attempted suicide by cop during a police transport. In contrast, she points out that killers like Jeffrey Dahmer did not exhibit any desire to be killed by others, debunking some common misconceptions about serial killers' end-of-life choices.    A significant part of the discussion focuses on the psychological implications of these actions. The varying motivations for suicide among serial killers – from health issues and despair to strategic planning for the benefit of loved ones – reflect the complexity of their psychological profiles. Dr. Ramsland's insights shed light on how these individuals view their imprisonment and the inevitability of their fate, offering a glimpse into their often distorted sense of control and finality.    As the conversation concludes, Brueski thanks Dr. Ramsland for her enlightening input, emphasizing the value of her research and writings in understanding the intricate behaviors of serial killers. Her expertise provides not just academic insights but also practical knowledge that can aid in law enforcement and psychological profiling.    What does the decision to commit suicide reveal about the inner workings of a serial killer's mind, and how can this knowledge help us in understanding and potentially preventing future crimes? This episode of "Hidden Killers" with Dr. Katherine Ramsland leaves listeners pondering the depths of human psychology, especially those of the most enigmatic and dangerous individuals in society.    In a world that often struggles to comprehend the motives behind such heinous crimes, Dr. Ramsland's contributions offer a valuable perspective, deepening our understanding of the complex and often disturbing realities of the criminal mind. Nurse Lucy Letby violently attacked and killed 7 newborns and attempted to murder 6 more. She is Britain's most prolific child serial killer. Why did she do it? Apparently, for “love”.Visit betterhelp.com/DUBIOUS today to get 10% off your first month of therapy. Lucy Letby has been found guilty of murdering seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six more at the Countess of Chester hospital in north-west England. Aged 33, the nurse attacked the babies between June 2015 and June 2016 at the neonatal unit where she worked. If you like our content, please become a patron to get all our episodes ad-free. In this episode we discuss how the Countess of Chester hospital management dropped the ball and their series of failures and attempts to cover-up the severity of the situation that led to this tragic outcome. 1 During trial, Lucy Letby blamed the neonatal unit doctors for being out to get her - “the Gang of Four” she called them: John Gibbs, Stephen Breaery, Ravi Jayram and another pediatrician. In reality, these doctors were the ones who fought the hospital management in order to get police involved and stop the horrific murders. 2 Nurse Letby injected air into the newborn's tummies and veins (air embolus), poisoned them with insulin, overfed them milk, even hit them hard causing organ damage and showed metal objects down their throats causing them to bleed uncontrollably and go into cardiac arrest. Some of the babies that survived are left with permanent brain injuries from the lack of oxygen they endured before being resuscitated. An inquiry is ongoing as to why hospital management were so slow to act, but this is not a public inquiry which obliges witnesses to give statements under oath. James Craig: The Profile Of A Poisoner

In a chilling narrative of domestic deceit, James Craig, a 45-year-old dentist from Aurora, Colorado, stands accused of the calculated murder of his wife, Angela Craig. The alleged poisoner, now facing charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, reportedly used cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, an ingredient typically found in eyedrops, to fatally poison his spouse. However, Craig's story is not unique - many other individuals have fallen into the dark abyss of using poison as a tool for murder. Let's explore these sinister cases and the eerily similar characteristics that these offenders share.   James Craig's alleged modus operandi was meticulously planned and alarmingly cold-blooded. His wife's protein shakes were reportedly the vehicle of poison, laced with lethal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline. The disturbing internet search history on Craig's office computer, queries such as "Is Arsenic Detectable in Autopsy," paints a macabre picture of premeditated murder.   This pattern of methodical planning and deception is a common thread among poisoners. Notoriously, British doctor Harold Shipman, dubbed "Dr. Death," used his trusted position to administer fatal doses of diamorphine to his patients under the guise of routine treatment. Similarly, Mary Ann Cotton, a 19th-century Englishwoman, allegedly poisoned up to 21 people, including her own children, using arsenic.   Another characteristic prevalent among these offenders is their superficial charm and the ability to maintain a façade of normalcy. Before his arrest, James Craig was a respected dentist and a family man in his local community. This ability to lead a seemingly 'normal' life while harboring dark secrets is a shared trait among many poisoners. For instance, the affable and charismatic persona of America's "Auntie Poldi," a.k.a. Nannie Doss, concealed her deadly intentions, leading to the demise of multiple husbands.   Financial motivations or the desire for freedom often underpin these horrific acts. Craig's failing dental practice and numerous debts hint at possible financial incentives behind his wife's murder. This echoes the case of Stacey Castor, who poisoned her two husbands for life insurance payouts.   The subtle yet potent nature of poison and the ability to administer it surreptitiously draw these individuals towards such a heinous crime. However, the detailed forensics of the modern era, coupled with diligent investigative work, often bring these plots to light, as in Craig's case.   As we delve into the mind of James Craig and his counterparts, we find a complex interplay of cunning planning, charming deception, and disturbing motivations. Unraveling these characteristics, we glimpse the shadowy figure of the poisoner, a character whose actions leave a trail of heartbreak and loss in their wake. The true tragedy, however, remains the innocent lives ruthlessly extinguished, and the shattered families left to grapple with their grief.   Remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing domestic issues, help is always available. For many months and years, the tide ran with Fred Shipman. These were perfect crimes: apparently motiveless, with victims whose deaths, although a shock to those around them, were not questioned, committed by a murderer who had access to the means of killing and who was, because of his position and because of his own reputation as a particularly caring doctor, above suspicion. But there were in Hyde a few people who began to notice that there was a scourge at the heart of their close-knit community, that a terrible sequence of events was in train. These people are the heroes of this story, because without them it is possible that Dr Fred Shipman could still be at large, still be administering his unique brand of care in the community. It is partly thanks to them, and their watchfulness, that Fred Shipman was imprisoned: they may not, as individuals, have been able to stop his killing spree, but they made vital contributions to the build-up of evidence against him. John Shaw is a giant of a man, big in stature and big of heart. He retired at the age of sixty-four in the summer of 1999, but for more than eleven years he was a taxi driver in Hyde.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. There was another cluster of killings around Christmas 1987, with three deaths in December and another two in the first half of January. In February 1988 the death rate was cranked up to four murders within a week. There was then a gap of seven months without a killing, possiblybecause the four in one week had caused one of the other members of the staff at Donneybrook to comment. But he was back in business by the end of the year, again killing two elderly people in the run up to Christmas, just before they were each about to go to their families for the festive season. In 1989 he killed twelve patients. For the first time, he killed a patient in his own examination room.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. The death of Mrs Lyons echoes in many ways the death of Shipman's mother, Vera, twelve years earlier, a death he re-enacted many times over the ensuing years. He now had the blueprint for successful, undetected murder, and he would follow it closely for the next twenty-three years. Although far from the majority of his future murders would be clear cases of euthanasia. Nobody knows whether Shipman was using his eventual drug of choice for murder, diamorphine, or whether he was, at this stage, using the supplies of pethidine he was illegally obtaining to support his own habit. There were many inconsistencies in Shipman's behaviour and recording of the death. He said the patient had been in a coma for forty-five to fifty minutes, yet no nursing staff were called. He said that he had attended to Mr Brewster for the last eighteen hours of his illness, yet the patient had still been at home nine hours earlier. He said the patient had deteriorated in the ambulance en route to hospital, yet this had not been noted when Mr Brewster was admitted, by the family, the nursing staff or by Shipman himself in his admission notes. The family had not been called, which they probably would have been had Mr Brewster been in a coma. Shipman specifically recorded the phrase ‘no need to report to coroner' despite the fact that there was a ruling by the local coroner that all deaths within twenty-four hours of admission to hospital should be reported. All of these inconsistencies, coupled with the fact that Shipman was again present at the death, and the time of death was in the evening, led to the conclusion that this death was a murder.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. At the beginning of the investigation it was assumed that Shipman began his murderous activities in general practice in Todmorden and later in Hyde. A few inquiries were carried out initially by the Shipman Inquiry into his time as a hospital doctor, particularly after the relative of a patient who died in his care at Pontefract came forward. But there appeared to be no obvious evidence of any crime in the hospital, other than his own abuse of drugs in the six months prior to him leaving. It was initially a fair presumption that he was not killing, bearing in mind it is much harder for a doctor in a hospital to be alone with a patient than it is in general practice, and it would also be harder for him to obtain controlled drugs. However...Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. The common denominator for Fred and Primrose was that they were both lonely and sexually frustrated, and the secret glances between them on the top deck of the Wetherby bus, interpreted so easily as falling in love, were founded on a recognition of their own need in each other. Within a few months of arriving in Leeds, Fred had acquired the status he craved: he had a girlfriend. They were extremely attracted to each other and very much enjoyed each others company. Neither of them had any sexual experience, so they tentatively started exploring each other. They were intensely happy, high on first love, proud of sexual success, and as confused as many others at the time about just how much of the new freedom to enjoy. Not knowing the rules of how far to go, not daring to buy condoms, they had unprotected sex, and Primrose, to the astonishment of everyone who knew her, became pregnant.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Her death was discovered when, on Wednesday the 24 th of June. She had failed to turn up at Werneth House to help with the lunches. When telephone calls to her home went unanswered the caretaker from the pensioners' centre in Lord Derby Road, John Green, and one of the volunteers, Ronald Pickford, went to the house and, failing to get a reply to their knock, let themselves in through a door they were surprised to find unlocked. In the living room they discovered Mrs Grundy, fully clothed, curled up on the sofa as if asleep. She looked peaceful, but had a grey complexion. Mr Pickford knew that Shipman was her GP, and knew his number. When the doctor arrived about ten minutes later he told John Green that he had seen Mrs Grundy earlier that morning but ‘only for a talk'. He said she must have been well enough to get dressed, as when he saw her she was in her night clothes. He carried out what the police described as a ‘cursory examination' of the body and told the two men she had had a quote/unquote ‘a cardiac arrest'.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast.
