In this edition of the BikeRadar podcast, digital writer Jack Evans and senior technical writer Simon von Bromley speak to Jacob Tipper about the risks of over-relying on your smart trainer. Jacob rode for the world-beating Huub Wattbike track team and was a road professional with Ribble Weldtite. He now uses his Master's Degree in Applied Sports Science to run his coaching business, Jacob Tipper Performance Coaching. His clients have included former UCI Hour Record holder Dan Bigham and EF Education-EasyPost WorldTour professional Ben Healy. Jacob admits turbo training has its place, but argues riding on the road is essential to develop bike handling, pedalling technique and aerodynamic efficiency. He explains why averaging more watts in a session doesn't necessarily make you fitter and points out the flaws of the Training Stress Score metric. Jacob also weighs in to the divisive polarised vs pyramidal endurance training debate. Plus find out why he advocates winter strength training for force-limited cyclists and a flexible approach to coaching. Lastly, Jacob, who is Head of Cycling at Huub Design, discusses the challenges of Research and Development for cycling clothing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dan Bigham started out as an aerodynamicist in Formula 1 working with the Mercedes team. He mentions that he was responsible for designing wing mirrors. In recent years he's made a name for himself in cycling and triathlon, firstly creating the disruptive track cycling team you might know as HUUB Wattbike, helping cyclists and triathletes in their relentless pursuit of speed with his retail business Wattshop, and more recently having a big involvement with the sub-7 project as a bike pacer for Alistair Brownlee. On top of that he's currently working with Ineos Grenadiers and preparing for his own tilt at the world hour record. If that's not enough, he has a book out called "Start at the End” which we will be referring to frequently. Basically he's been a very busy lad! Whether you geek out on how to save watts, or you just have an interest in the tech side of cycling, you'll find this a very engaging conversation as we chat about: Team HUUB Wattbike, 1hr record, being a disrupter Principles of reverse engineering How to use reverse engineering to improve your triathlon performance Best watts per pound investments for you Why slower riders benefit more from investment in aero Shaving legs or wearing aero calf guards - which is best? This time, I'm talking to Dan Bigham. Dan is probably the only person who can stand right in the centre of the Venn diagram of cycling science and tech where literally everything – including riding – overlaps. As a rider he's a world championship medallist and a national time trial champion, and he's also an aerodynamicist, engineer and manufacturer. He was the engineering brains behind the Huub Wattbike track-pursuit team – the four housemates from Derby who took on the national squads at the track World Cups, and caused them such embarrassment that the UCI apparently changed the rules to stop them. His meticulous approach started with aerodynamics, “I reckon I'm about 30-40 watts more aero than most of the people I'm competing against,” he says. And while aerodynamics is still at the centre of what he does, he's moved on to improving drivetrains, handlebars and other hardware, and moved on again to optimising time trial pacing strategies and team time trial tactics. He tells me how he tries to balance his various roles and interests, and admits that as a rider there have been points where he's almost given up training because the gains in speed he was making from engineering were dwarfing the gains he could make from spending the time out on his bike. We also hear from Canyon SRAM director Beth Duryea about Dan's role in her team's win in the world team time trial championships in 2018. And from Brian Cookson OBE, the former president of the UCI about how the sport's law makers try to balance the technical innovations of people like Dan with the long-term interests of the sport. Welcome back to another episode of Coffee and Van Chats - On this episode we chat with Team Pursuit legend and probably the most controversial cyclist Dan Bigham. Along with being a team pursuit legend - when it comes t aerodynamics Dan knows it and has reinvented the way we look at being aero. Dan started and road for the british squad HUUB WattBike a squad built up of a bunch of misfits in the British Cycling Federations eyes. The squad would later go on to being a dream team leading to a few World Cup wins over some of the World best teams, even the British National Squad! Dan and I chat everything from Dan's UCI trade team HUUB Wattbike, his contract to work with Denmark for the 2021 Olympic Games Campaign and the controversial limited opportunities from British Cycling Federation. In this episode of Service Course join Lizzy Banks and Tom Whalley as they take an look back at the track team from Derbados that took on the world and turned the track scene upside down. Team Huub Wattbike have been the leaders in technical innovation in the world of track cycling since they burst on to the scene as Team KGF back in the 2017 British National Track Championships. Since then, they've pushed the UCI rules to tipping point and watched the UCI push back with many different rule changes, ultimately leading to the banning of trade teams from track World Cup events. Being down but not out, Huub Wattbike simply decided to end on a high. May should have seen them attempting to break multiple track world records at altitude in Bolivia but that dream was also scuppered when they found themselves stranded in Tenerife during their final preparations. We also take a look at some of the latest emerging tech and speak to Callum Skinner about his Hindsight glasses just launched on Kickstarter. PodCrash - Talk of Champions with Philip Hindes & Callum Skinner
Introducing the underdogs of the cycling world; Team Huub Wattbike. With a non-traditional route into cycling, this team burst onto the scene at nationals and have held their own ever since. From maxing out credit cards to attend the World Cup, to their innovative approach to aerodynamics - they’re making waves (and winning them medals). This week, Olympic champions Callum Skinner and Philip Hindes talk to Huub Wattbike teammates Dan Bigham and Jonny Wale about all things cycling. Following on from Episode 12’s discussion on the National Road Championships, this cycling podcast begins with some other points of view and Bigham has his say on the day. In other news, Hindes is back in the gym, you guessed it; squatting. Then it’s full-speed ahead into Huub Wattbike’s inspiring story. Bigham (AKA The Raptor), initially studied and worked in performance engineering, when a chance opportunity gave him his first taste of cycling. Wale, however, had always been passionate about the sport and found his purpose within the team after battling mental health issues.“We’re literally here because we’ve got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride our bikes really fast.” - Jonny WaleHaving taken on the Commonwealth Games and won the team pursuit in the Belarus World Cup, Bigham and Wale share their winning strategies and forward-thinking focus on kit and aerodynamics. But it’s not been easy. From living in cramped quarters to home break-ins; their gritty determination has seen them endure some massive highs and lows. Now, they’ve been thrown another curveball: the UCI’s recent decision to ban trade teams in future World Cup races. We discuss their thoughts on the matter and what it means for the future of British cycling and Huub Wattbike.Show us the love by subscribing, rating and reviewing PodCrash. Today on the Cycling Time trial podcast we welcome Dan Bigham and Jacob Tipper. In the relatively old and pretty well represented world of time trials and track racing, the HUUB Wattbike team has created a splash in a pretty mature industry. They are here, there and everywhere, and it would be a lot easier for them to outline everyplace that they are rather than me trying to figure it out. Welcome Dan Bigham and Jacob Tipper!
Kolie and Kyle sit down with The Fastest Pursuiter in the World, Ashton Lambie, and talk about gravel racing and training for the track, his world record individual pursuit, his time with Huub-Wattbike, and the aerodynamics of the mustache.
This episode of The Cycling Podcast features an extended interview by Richard Moore with Dan Bigham, John Archibald, Jacob Tipper and Jonathan Wale of the Huub Wattbike team that has been ruffling feathers on the track. At the weekend, they won the national team pursuit title and their rider John Archibald rode a 4-09 in the 4,000-metre individual pursuit, which gives him the second and third fastest times in history as well as the fastest at sea level. Richard hears how the self-styled disruptors from the People's Republic of Derbados – or Derby as it's more commonly known – are taking a maverick yet scientific approach to going as fast as possible. They explain why they are aiming high and hope to break the world team pursuit, individual pursuit and Hour Records in the next couple of years. They also explain why their route to World and Olympic medals might be more complicated. It's a fascinating listen. We also recap what's been going on in the world of professional cycling as the 2019 road season begins to get going. And we discuss Iljo Keisse's inappropriate gesture when posing for a photograph which led to his disqualification from the Vuelta a San Juan for bringing the event into disrepute. Finally in this bumper episode – and continuing the track racing theme – we hear from Lotto-Soudal's Victor Campenaerts about his plan to tackle Bradley Wiggins's Hour Record.
