Abby and Patrick welcome psychoanalyst Avgi Saketopoulou for a frank conversation about politics, psychoanalysis, and the politics of psychoanalysts and of psychoanalytic institutions. Recent years have seen multiple psychoanalytic schools, museums, and other entities invite lecturers and panelists to discuss ongoing events in Israel and Palestine, only to then variously cancel, alter, or otherwise walk back those invitations. Avgi, who has both witnessed and been on the receiving end of such “disinvitations,” joins Abby and Patrick to reflect on their significance on multiple levels. In what ways do these events reflect how institutional psychoanalysis has responded to the genocide in Gaza more generally? How do such events play out as communications, both in terms of the language and rationales invoked by people involved, and in terms of what they implicitly convey as unspoken norms? If we see such “disinvitations” as enactments, then what are the underlying fantasies and anxieties they express? What is their immediate social and political context, what are their precedents, and what deeper histories and traumas might underwrite them? Avgi Saketopoulou "Towards a Psychoanalytic Theory of Resistance: Exigent Sadism & The Revolutionary Impulse" In this podcast we discuss the radical figure of the Marquis de Sade, the revolutionary potential of sadism, and how the meaning of the concept changed in the aftermath of the Holocaust. But what does it mean today to speak about sadism in the midst of the current genocide in Gaza? Saketopoulou proposes the sexual drive as an anarchic energy that can be mobilised for political purposes: revolutionary impulses against the current memory culture, proprietary relationships to the past, the policing of narratives around Gaza, and the pinkwashing of colonial violence. We also discuss current psychoanalytic debates around trans life, considering the ongoing genocide against trans people in the United States, alongside broader questions about the legitimacy of armed struggle and resistance in the face of institutions such as ICE. We talk about opacity and the “noise in the communication line,” following Édouard Glissant and Jean Laplanche. These entropic and anarchic energies, what Laplanche's psychoanalysis calls the noise in the communication line of the other, point to a fundamental opacity at the heart of subjectivity. The sexual drive introduces something that cannot be fully understood or translated; yet this very opacity becomes a condition of possibility for subjectivation and for ethics, challenging the self-centering and narcissistic limits of empathy. Saketopoulou suggests that we develop a different relationship to trauma, not as something that just can disappear. Trauma is also an unbound psychic energy that destabilizes the sovereignty of the ego, a wound that can also be a force that sets things into motion. Taking into account the complex relationship between violence and sexuality, revolutionary politics must confront power, sovereignty, and aggression directly, refusing the liberal management of suffering and recognizing that colonized people retain the right to resist by any means necessary.

Abby and Patrick welcome Danielle Drori of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research for the first in a two-part miniseries introducing the work of psychoanalyst Jean Laplanche (1924-2012). A brilliant clinician and theorist in his own right, Laplanche combined a critical reading of Freud with insights drawn from anthropology, the history of science, and Western philosophy to revolutionize how many analysts saw questions of sexuality, development, language, and more. Yet while incredibly influential in France and beyond, Laplanche's thought has only made limited inroads among clinicians and theorists in the English-speaking world. In this episode, Danielle, Abby, and Patrick introduce the figure of Laplanche, narrating his biography and discussing everything from his place in French critical theory to his encyclopedic scholarship of Freud (together with Jean Pontalis) to his disagreements with Lacan. They then sketch out some of Laplanche's key ideas, with particular attention to his critique of Freud's “seduction theory.” As they explain, Laplanche's revision of that concept into a “generalized” model of seduction allows him and his contemporary interpreters to suggest some radical ways for thinking about questions of trauma, subjectivity, language, sexuality, and more. I am happy to say my visit to the Freud Museum gave me renewed enthusiasm for the field. I then delve into my book series Rendering Unconscious: Psychoanalytic Perspectives, detailing its origins, contributors, and themes.
