Kristen Faulkner is a cyclist and the 2024 Olympic champion in the Women's Road Race and Women's Team Pursuit. Faulkner grew up playing sports in rural Alaska and was recruited to row crew at Harvard. After graduating with a degree in computer science, she moved to New York City and worked for a venture capital firm, identifying early stage software startups for investment. She missed competing and being part of a team, so with a recommendation from her friend, she took an introductory cycling class in Central Park. She quickly realized she loved the sport and started training before work and on the weekends. She competed in amateur races and hired coaches to help her perfect her form. In 2020, she was invited to join a women's professional racing team based in San Francisco, and over the next four years, she trained extensively, using her VC brain to analyze her performance. She notched several professional race wins, and after deciding to quit her VC job to pursue cycling full-time, she moved to Europe to train. This summer, she competed in the Women's Team Pursuit and Women's Road Race events in the 2024 Paris Olympics, bringing home gold medals in both categories.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ian Hallam is an Olympic medal winner from a time when British cyclists generally didn't win Olympic medals. He first represented Great Britain at the Mexico games in 1968 and went on to win a bronze medal in Munich in 1972 and again in 1976 in Montreal in the Team Pursuit. He also won 3 Commonwealth titles in the Individual Pursuit and 4km Team Pursuit and has held no fewer than 25 National track titles between 1969 and 1981. Chris Sidwells caught up with Ian this week to talk about his career, training and life after cycling (plus some lesser-known aerodynamic innovations from the 1970s!). With the final Nations Cup of the season nearing, Sarah Van Dam was in Milton, Ont., with the Canadian squad getting ready for the event. Since the Olympics are only a few months away, the Nations Cup is a key part of the qualification process for Paris. Van Dam and the other riders on the team pursuit squad are after a top-eight place at minimum. But they're really expecting a better result. In 2023, the group took bronze in the event in Milton.Van Dam uses road cycling to support the track, however, she finds the track work doesn't actually add to her racing on tarmac. Still, she's continuing to balance both disciplines this year as she did the previous season. Last year, she took on a serious block of road racing in Europe, which she found overwhelming at first. She didn't even eat during a 140-km stage. In March, she was back on the narrow, twisty routes of that continent, making improvements. Following the Olympics, Van Dam is planning to mix it up once again on the roads of the one-day Egmont Cycling Race Women and seven-stage Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche. From serious racing, and serious splinters from crashes on the track, the discussion in this podcast episode also moves to dancing. Van Dam and her teammate Maggie Coles-Lyster create dance numbers for social media. Van Dam discusses that process, and how they roped in a reluctant Champions League rider, one who'd go on to win the event, into one of their clips. This episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast is supported by the No. 22 Bicycle Company, makers of fine titanium bikes. Founders Mike Smith and Bryce Gracey check in to discuss their unique approach to bike construction, which is all done in North America, and their hands-on approach to getting you the best bike.

Did the cold and the wind get to the competitors? Juggling training by itself is hard. Juggling training along with real life obligations is even harder. Add the physical and psychological changes that come with menopause and midlife? Oh boy. Better call Cirque du Soleil for some tips. Or you can call a lifelong athlete, veteran coach, and exercise physiologist like this week's guest, Lenita Anthony, who provides sound, science- and life-based advice on planning your exercise sessions, balancing intensity with recovery (especially when it comes to high intensity intervals), and setting exciting new goals during this time of life. Lenita is a longtime fitness industry presenter, author, and master educator for Stages Cycling. She is a National Board Certified Health Coach, and has over 25 years experience in clinical exercise physiology and fitness education. A former IDEA contributing editor board member, her expertise includes program design for special populations and sports performance. A lifelong athlete, Lenita raced triathlons of all distances, including the Ironman Hawaii World Championships in Kona. In more recent years, she has put her competitive focus into track cycling, where she has won National and World Championship titles, and set 4 age-group World Records in Individual Pursuit and Team Pursuit. The topic of athlete mental health has become the biggest talking point of these Olympics. How do top athletes manage the pressures on them to perform, and do fans and media put too much weight on wins and losses? On today's podcast we examine this conversation. We also break down the U.S. women's Team Pursuit, which rode to the bronze medal this week. It's just the second medal for Team USA at these Olympics, and far fewer than the seven medals that USA Cycling said it was targeting this year. We examine this delta between Team USA's ambitions, and the reality of these games. Then, Olympians Amber Neben and Haley Batten join the podcast to take us inside the women's individual time trial and cross-country mountain bike events. Neben was fifth place in the ITT, just barely missing out on a medal. She examines her ride and gives us some behind-the-scenes perspective on her experience in Tokyo. Batten finished ninth in the XC race, and shares some perspective on how she managed the external and internal pressures to perform in the biggest race of her career. This week's episode is brought to you by Travel Texas, which reminds you that Texas is home to some of the best bike racing and bike riding in the U.S.

Kristin Armstrong and Matt Stephens chat about the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, and how she is preparing her athletes to compete in the women's Mountain Biking and Team Pursuit cycling events. With three Olympic gold medals to her name as well as two World Championships in Time Trial, Kristin admits she now cares a little too much about her athletes and explains how that competitive feeling never really goes away. Never afraid of a tangent, the duo converse on the themes of time travel, tracksuits and pizza too.
Coaching both a track racing cyclist and a mountain biking cyclist requires an entirely dual approach. On the mountain biking side, Kristin is working with Hayley Batten's innate lack of fear to ride the most technical of sections as well as encouraging her through her racing despite inconsistent results. On the track side, she is focused on transitioning Emma White from cyclocross racing to pushing massive power for standing starts and dialing in minute aspects of her aerodynamic setup. Listen as Coach Kristin Armstrong discusses leveraging her knowledge about the science and the art of coaching, as well as heat training to bring these two promising young athletes to Tokyo.

Topics Discussed: Ed's presence on the previous episode, and his new role as the rolling co-host of the P3 Podcast! The advice Ed would give himself as a youngster if he could; how it's important not to focus too much on material pursuits and accolades, and focus instead on being happy, humble and good to those around you. The Olympics and sports bubble that athletes such as Ed experience during the Olympic cycle, Ed's experience with it and how he has learnt to handle it over the years. How some people, such as Geraint, are naturally more positive, and how Ed feels like he is almost the opposite of that. The importance of being centred and knowing your own self-worth when it comes to achieving your goals. How over-analysing can be a strength and a weakness, and how it may have caused Ed's negativity in the past. Ed's experience with leadership, how it's often thrust upon someone, and how Ed learnt from his failures with leading when he was younger and improved upon them. How Ed and Phil met during the difficult time surrounding Team Pursuit's famous terrible result in 2014 and how it helped Ed turn a corner as a result of that. Ed's back injury, surgery and subsequent recovery during 2015, and how the support he felt and the determination it triggered in Ed helped him go on to do succeed at Rio 2016. Phil relates the lessons learnt from Ed's injury can be related to the world of business. The importance of not getting complacent and appreciating what you have already done as opposed to always focusing on what's next. Ed's opinion on what common threads Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas and Dave Brailsford have, and how their positive mentality may be what has helped them to be so successful. How Cavendish would tell people about his outlandish goals because he wanted to be held accountable, whereas Geraint had a quiet confidence in himself and wouldn't want to appear arrogant to others. How Cavendish and Geraint both have entirely different personalities on and off the bike. Cavendish's and Garaint's good values, and how they are both great people off the bike. Ed's two worst ever days on the bike. Ed's biggest sporting and non-sporting hero. The five guests that Ed would invite to his retirement party. Ed's future roles with Pro-Noctis, but mainly the Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy, why Ed set it up and why he thinks it is so important for kids to have access to cycling References:The Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy - https://www.clancybriggs.co.uk/homeEd Clancy's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ed.clancy/?hl=enEd Clancy's Twitter - https://twitter.com/ed_clancy?lang=en

Turtle Wilson joins us on this episode of the Watts Up Podcast. Turtle’s wife, Gwen Afton, won the gold medal at the 2019 UCI Masters World Championship Women's 55-59 Team Pursuit. Turtle wants to talk about communication – he has had issues with this in the past. It is challenging to know when to give feedback during a workout. Early on in the relationship, you need to layout the expectations of communication for the athlete and the coach. Most coaching companies will have several different plans – one focuses on analysis, and another focuses on communication. Metrics should be your first communication talking points. The data should include weight, mood, sleep, stress, and diet. The coach will be able to filter through your data and determine what could be impacting your lifestyle. As a coach, Turtle wants to know if the athlete feels successful. If an athlete comments, then Turtle is going to respond. Instead of putting all your data into emails, the more the athlete can put into TrainingPeaks, the better off the athlete will be. Race reports are a fantastic tool that Turtle uses frequently. They tell the coach what the athlete was thinking during the race. Plus, for later races, the athlete can go back to their report and see how they could improve.Turtle reinforces that it’s essential to record all your metrics so your coach can give feedback and analyze the data. The first metric Turtle likes to see is body weight. Even if an athlete is feeling sick, Turtle wants it to be noted into the metrics. That way, he can get more useful information by looking at trends throughout the month.TrainingPeaks: https://www.trainingpeaks.comHow to add a metric in TrainingPeaks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO4npurkdrw

Bevo chatted to the entire five members from the world record breaking cycling team at Poland's World Championships earlier this year. With one microphone, one round table and one of the lads overseas via Skype we nailed it!
It’s the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. TEAM USA is lined up at the starting line of the Velodrome for the Team Pursuit cycling event. The women representing USA are going for gold against Britain. The eldest member of the three is a 39-year-old cyclist who years earlier nearly died from anorexia and a drug addiction. Dotsie Bausch is a 7-time USA Cycling National Champion, a 2-time Pan American Champion and an Olympic Silver medalist. Titles achieved in a sport she didn’t start until she was 26 years old. This former runway model initially took up cycling to recover from an eating disorder and excessive Cocaine use. Desperate and suicidal, Dotsie who is 5’ 8”, weighed less than 100 pounds when she sought professional help. This record-breaking athlete, overcame unbelievable odds to become an Olympian, is a staunch advocate for animal rights. She promotes a vegan lifestyle for everyone, especially athletes, who she says can perform as well on a plant based diet. A shining example of someone who after hitting rock bottom was able to reinvent herself and achieve the seemingly impossible -- become a champion not only in the world of cycling but to all the people she inspires and motivates to make a better life for themselves. Fighting hard to regain control of her life, pouring everything into getting strong and healthy, and by vowing never to go back to the hell she had created has paid off in ways she never could have imagined.

Kirsty Young's castaway is the cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins. Winner of four Olympic gold medals, six track World Championship gold medals and the first Briton to win the Tour de France, cycling is in his blood. His parents met through the sport - his Australian father was himself a professional, his British mother a keen follower. His father left the family when Bradley was still a toddler and it was his mum, Linda, who helped him pursue his dreams of being a champion cyclist. Inspired by Chris Boardman's success at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics by the age of 16 he'd won gold, silver and bronze at the Junior National Track Championships and was called up to the National Squad. He was Junior World Champion at 18. Knighted following his achievements in 2012, he's soon to attempt the world record for the furthest distance cycled in an hour and plans to return to the track in the Team Pursuit at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
